I had high hopes for the Prime in the sound (external speakers) department.
Recent reviews revealed that the Asus Prime has speakers only at one side. No stereo sound experience when you hold the tablet in-front of you. Very disappointing in my opinion.
What do others think?
You might want to look at these redundant threads:

nope, no one. First time I heard of that.
For me it's disappointing in terms of checking off specs. In real world use I'll probably be using head phones 95% of the time so it's not a big deal.
I'm going to reserve judgement until I get my unit. Haven't really heard anything bad about it with most reviews complaining more about the placement of the speaker.
This reviewer had good things to say about it.
"There is one speaker on the back of the unit along the right edge. While other tablets offer a two-speaker stereo approach, I found the Prime's overall sound quality to be surprisingly good; music sounded full and was free from the tinny effect that frequently plagues tablet speakers. At full volume, songs were almost too loud for a single-room environment. This was a welcome change from other tablets, where the volume can never seem to get high enough."

What is up with all this hate threads? No one has a damn tab in their hand so everyone needs to chill. I request a mod to delete all these stupid random threads about what the tab does and doesn't have. I'm just as excited as everyone else but we don't need 100 open discussions bout it when its not even out yet. Excited topics bout our expectations but on my god every one is bagging on a device not being sold yet.

I have read a lot on this in other forums. My thoughts are:
1) I haven't actually heard it myself so it is difficult for me to be too concerned.
2) I would normally use a headset anyway to get the full audio experience even if it had two true stereo speakers.
3) I haven't watched a review where they have bashed the audio, only mentioned that it seems to be somewhat directional and your hand can muffle it a bit which would make sense. A few have mentioned that even thought it is one speaker the sound produced is pretty good.
In summary the speaker quality was WAY down on my feature list so I am not concerned at all as long as my headphones sound sweet.
Just my $0.02. Your mileage and needs for audio could be entirely different than mine.
Yes. I really wanted to piss off all my fellow passengers on public transportation systems by playing the Butthole Surfers at full blast -- the more speakers the better -- and now Asus won't let me.
Oh, woe is poor, poor pitiful me!
No, the original...
I went and played with a prime at gamestop today. The audio was really loud and clear. and like some reviewers said if you put you hand over the speaker it seems to sound better which is good because your hand will be on top of it a lot. The other thing I liked was when I had the sound all the way up you could feel the bass in the tablet it's self which was pretty cool when playing games.
Sure, im also disappointed that my nexus s doesn't have 7.1 surround sound

I am extremely disappointed that the Prime doesn't come with a Vagina. I though it was perfect, but since it doesn't have that one spec I wanted, I guess i'm gonna have to go with my girlfriend who's still running 1.0.

as you can see in my signature i come from a desire hd as well. compared with the dhd the sgs2 is superior in almost all things:
WAY better screen (although some people have problems with yellowish tint, dead pixels, ...),
far more processing power,
better cam,
WAY better internal speaker and sound quality (you can use the speaker phone with almost no distortion with high volumes),
nice look and feel (first i feared the "plastic" look, but i got used to it and like it now),
much less weight,
to name only what comes to my mind!
so if you trust me, switch to the SGS2, you won't regret it!

IT's worth it. This device...2GB ROM, 1GB RAM, 1.2Ghz Dual Core which android isn't even completely reeady for yet. The GSII won't be outdated for a long time. Yes, there are the quad cores at year end and about this time next year, but the GSII will still be able to keep up. Don't see more than 1GB RAM in a phone any time soon!
Yes upgrade .

Thank you people for your replies, as I too am seriously considering the upgrade.
I have heard a lot of positive things about the speaker.
The one thing, is music quality through headphones, compared to the DHD. I listen to a lot of music and love the SRS. I use PowerAMP, and understand you can use an equalizer as well.
Your thoughts on music quality through headphones?
Much appreciated

The headphones fit nicer in the ear, because they're the soft rubber (circular-squidgy) style, compared to my old HTC hard earphones with only a thin layer of foam for softness.
However the quality still isn't that good, but then again I am comparing to Bose in-ear headphones which I've gotten used to over the past year.
The quality compared with my iTouch playing a song bought from iTunes, is better. I didn't think it would be but playing Poppiholla - so it's got the bass, treble and a range of different sounds, is better. Of course, the improvement is barely noticeable, but one thing I really do like, is the fact at the top right of the player there's a 5.1 surround sound button. This actually works. I could hear the sound of the song change and it sounded really good. It felt as if it were coming from behind me.
So yes, the quality of sound through ear-phones is damn impressive. I just tested it now. (also if you're playing music, you can tap the home button or unlock the screen and a small widget/console/3 buttons slide in from the top making it easy to skip, rewind/go back or pause the music)

I can say that both are good. I was streaming off my NAS Box this morning. Sound quality from it was really good. I had it below half volume and the speaker was a surprisingly good quality, and I was listening to rock (which if I tried to do the same on my Desire, would be very distorted)
Of course the loud speaker comes down to a fair bit of personal opinion, the fact that is on the back, but it's on the bottom of the back - the slightly thicker bit - which is in contact with the surface you put it on. I think it's the sound bouncing back off the surface that actually creates a good sound. Used it on a wooden table and table cloth and the sound quality was good on both.
Disclaimer: I did search in the forum and did not see this question asked or answered.
First off I LOVE my prime. I thought my only issue was really just a small amount of light bleed in one spot and I could live with that. So I synced my iTune music to my prime and cranked up a tune. To my surprise I noticed a rattling in the speaker that I had not noticed when playing games or watching movies. Thinking it was just a bad song I picked out one that I knew I purchased through iTunes that played great on an iPhone and other devices. Turned it on and though it is mostly ok you can hear distortion in the speaker even when the volume is turned up only 75%. Next I placed the Prime in the dock and the sound became somewhat hollow and the distortion was even more noticeable. It is interesting how the sound changes when placed in the dock. I removed the Prime from the dock and plugged it into the charging cable and the sound did not change as it did when docked. Just to be sure it was not my iTunes music I downloaded a free song from the Market and it performed the same as my iTune music with some distortion. With a headset, however, the music is great.
I have read where others compliment the sound from the speaker and say the dock makes it deeper and better in some ways. I don't expect this to be a high fidelity audio system but I didn't expect to hear the speaker have tones that rattled somewhat like a paper speaker with a small tear.
Just curious if anyone else has experienced this and it is normal or if I am the unlucky guy with a defective speaker. I am undecided on whether to: 1) exchange with Best Buy 2) RMA with Asus or just ignore it as I will normally use headphones if listening to music and alerts and games sound decent so far.
All input welcome.
I listen to alot of music on my prime and have never heard the speakers cracking...
I am also using an app to enhance the speakers (volume +) makes it a lot louder and less tin can like sounding.
Sorry to hear about your speakers crackling, does not sound normal. I don't have a dock so i cannot test what your talking about.

You are correct. I inadvertently posted this in the wrong place. I was bouncing between different forums trying to research. Is there a way to have a mod move it ? My apologies.
Well I am not sure what kind of audio you'd expect from mobile devices, but I would call myself kinda audiophil with a rather large home cinema system at home and the Prime is the first mobile device I own and the first I've seen (heard),
where I actually want to listen to music with it.
My Prime has outstanding speakers for that size. I totally love it. So maybe you got a broken speaker (it has actually stereo speakers, so maybe one is broken?)
Ah and I use Volume+ too raise the Volume.

Yea, start a great action film, put the prime next to a solid wall/thing/whatever, max out the volume and enjoy the brachial sound
Can't stress often enough how impressed I am by the sound Makes me sound like a super fanboy
Unfortunately, regardless the song at full volume my speaker sound over driven the way it is. When in the dock it also sound hollow. Definitely sound different in and out of the dock. Funny thing is I really don't hear the distortion with games or movies only songs.
I called Best Buy and they show them unavailable on their system and I didn't really want to return it to them anyway since it is otherwise great so I will test more and decide if I want to have Asus take a look at it at some point. If so I have a small spot of light bleed they can take care of. Either way I LOVE this device and truth be told I use earbuds or headset 80% of the time anyway. Just the fact that I want it right.
Thank you for the comments.
So, I got my One yesterday and I've been playing around with it quite a bit since then. I have to say that the speakers didn't really blow me away, but they are a lot better than most phones I have heard. I think it is quite silly of HTC to be bombarding the TV with commercials about the speakers when the camera is a better feature in my opinion. Anyways, I tried the included headphones and was pretty disappointed with them. They felt cheap as hell and I thought that the sound coming out of them was pretty crap. Thankfully, I recently purchased a pair of Klipsch Image x10s so I threw them on and I was very impressed with the sound coming out of the phone. It is super powerful. I am listening at 75-80% right now and it is almost painful. The Beats audio "enhancement" is pleasureable to me, but in reality is just adding some low end emphasis to the EQ settings. Still, it results in a fuller sound and I am porbably going to leave it on permamnently given how night and day the difference is through the BoomSound speakers without it. I know a lot of people have been saying that the audio quality wouldn't be as good as the S4 because that has the holy Wolfson DAC, but I have to say that I think the audio coming out of the One is clean, crisp, and has no appreciable noise as far as I can tell. What do you guys think?
Ya my wife usually makes fun of all my android phones when it comes to audio output volume / clarity compared to her iPhone. For the first time ever she was very impressed. That's as unbiased as it gets.

I agree. though I would argue the speakerphone is better than the camera, relative to my last phone at least, the note 2. speaker was pretty loud on that, but quality was bad. The one is louder and more clear for me, while I'm kinda meh about the picture quality.
attached files related.
first is with a 15w florescent bulb lighting my room at night and -2 sharpness, and the second is with my monitor being the only ambient light in night mode. Good? Yes. Better than my note 2 was? probably. Great? Eh.
though on a note: I was surprised in the second one: the photo is actually a little brighter than the scene was to my actual eyes. somewhatimpressed/10
Good day expert,
I love Sony Xperia Ultra Z. But I found out that Xperia Z Ultra can't perform a good phone function especially the speaker. The sound produced from the speaker is really low and unclear especially during phone call. This doesn't help even I have put it to loudspeaker. I have adjusted the volume control to max. I barely listen clearly the others party conversation. I feel shame.
I even tried the setting of (Normal, Bright, ..., slow talk) but it doesn't help. I confirmed it is not my Z Ultra defect as I checked others Z Ultra at retail store. All have the same poor and low sound output from the speaker.
How to really enjoy such a great phone if the sound produced is not loud and clear?
The sound really not acceptable (blur and poor volume output).
Seeking for help from SONY and experts.
Here is how I've ranked the audio (headphones) performance:
1)Nokia Phones (N9/Lumia)
2) HTC One X
3) iPhone 4s
4) Xperia Z Ultra
in regards to speaker output, i believe because of its placement vs. HTC OneX, for me its an improvement
I hope there are mods to increase the stock speaker volume as well as beats audio algorithms for music because its lacking right now!

You should have researched well before buying. Almost all reviews noted that the 2 weaknesses of the ultra are speaker volume and lack of flash. Most of us knew this and bought it, as this is truly a great device.

I don't really know why so many people complain about it. It's pretty par for the course in terms of tiny "external" speakers. Fairly tinny, but loud enough to be too loud in a quiet room. Note that the volume drops by a large amount after submerging the device in water. You need to wait for the speaker grille to purge itself of liquid before the volume returns.

I agree with you 100%. I have no idea how anyone can complain about the audio quality.
The audio quality on my Ultra is great. The in-call volume is sufficient and the sound is perfectly good both on both sides.
I just don't care about the speakers too much since I use headphones. I wouldn't even think about the idea of using a phone as a "stereo" by playing music through its speakers.
The audio quality through headphones is great too. I certainly agree that it provides high quality even for "mobile audiophile use".

I do hope the Bluetooth Headset (is it SBH52?) can keep up with the Good quality Audio... I don't want to plug in my headphones directly on the phone since the earphone jack's placement is awkward if you ask me.. It would be better if it was placed on the top edge and not on the side.
I use wired headphones, bluetooth headphones and headsets and stream audio bluetooth in my car. I don't really need or actually think that a phone's speakers are all that important so I am glad to have efforts focused elsewhere. I'd get a Jawbone Jambox or something similiar if I really needed good audio from speakers on the go.
I have a friend who has an HTC One and I agree they are the best speakers I have heard on a smartphone but I still think they are pretty crappy. I appreciate the speakers on my Nexus 10 but again I think it is a waste of time ever expecting good speakers on a small and slim device.

Well, I got that he was talking about the earpiece volume, but it also seemed he was saying that switching to the loud speaker didn't help either and I guess the thread evolved from there.
Anyway, a headset of some description should help in either case.
You're right though a couple of people did jump on him a bit harshly but it is pretty normal for people to get defensive about their devices.

I dont mind the sound, but make sure your ear is over the speaker on top. Its a big phone if you go to the right or left it will sound muffled. Maybe you are already doing this but if not try it. Night and day for me.

Example kids like you with 0 reputation trying to be smart.
So they came today!
I literally went to the registration site at 12:03 (17/10) and put in my phone and supplier details. Got confirmation of the freebies and they have arrived.
Not bad for a 14 day cooling off period.
Ok time for some hard truth.
I'll tell you why they are giving these things away.. It's because they don't really give you higher than 44khz well at least that's what I'm getting from the Dev BT debug info. which keeps reverting to 44khz 16bit.
They DO sit very snug though almost feel like you're wearing nothing. If they could shrink these down to just sit in your ear canal without the extra hardware then that would be something.
AAC @ 44100 which I'm guessing the AAC makes up for in the highs and lows.
I can't force the audio quality to go any better than this. I've tried just setting up to only 2 Bluetooth audio devices but doesn't seem to make this any better.
That being said the quality of the audio is a factor. Find some HQ dolby atmos audio demos and you might be able to apreciate these. You need HQ audio files and not MP3
The Audio is very good don't get me wrong but if you are expecting to get 96Khz at 32bits out of these then forget it.
So Dolby Atmos it is then.
DSEE HX is only for Wired Headphones.
Stick with Wired Headphones if you want true high fidelity. I'll keep you posted once I start walking around with these outside (praying not to get mugged for wearing these) to see just how good the noise cancellation is. Seems to overcompensate in a quiet room so you just need to turn this off or down otherwise you'll hear noise.
and the most no go at this set is u can't change the volume at the speakers....u always have to take out your cell phone and change volume with the phone only
I don't use nc on mine. Or ambient. I crank em up anyway.
I use mine everyday for walking the dog, had em some time. I will say, for my small ears, I surely feel wearing them when walking. And need from time to time to resnug em in, not that I'm afraid I'll loose one, I just loose snugness. This I'll compensate by wearing a beanie. No issues then.
I'll guess, this would eliminate the chances of being muged. Even though, not even worth stealing imo. Way to expensive, to what it is. So being a thief for this, is stupid. ????? So the question is, who would mug you?? Lol whoever must be stupid. ?
What did you pay for the bundle?
In Denmark it was 3336,- Dkk / 495,- US / 445,- EUR with carrier deal ofc. Phone Xperia now alone is stunning 830,- US in Denmark, with a following 300,- us wf 1000 mx3 that's 1100,-+ us. Wtf. Pretty glad got it all for under 500

Well u don't have to take it out, as button layout is pretty easy, even in case and through pocket. This is one of my least concerns. Why on Earth no LDAC codec for bt. As is Sony's own standard. Hi-res? They got the apple part. And released a Android. Makes sense. On the other hand. The mh version, as this is supposed to mimic, is oem but is far superior, and nothing alike to this iem. With a similar pricetag. I'll even go to my 950n'1s if it came to features. And real life buttons, no touch. Volume controll is the least missing. ? And I'll actually prefer em to my mh, I'd admit, imma basehead, the 950's for oem
Wired I'd use my ah-d7100 but then I gotta carry a dual set fiio combo besides. They are mostly just for looks at the desk. Lol
And I can only use the left one alone. Unless I start paring both. Besides. If I leave on the table, yes I'm like that, don't really care, then the left one will shut off, in 5 min, as supposed if not wearing. The right one will stay alive till draind. Is this just here?
They a supposed to connect to the box, and to what ever. Problem is, I think, they do not. As I can easily leave my case behind.
Sony broke their own codec this time around. ? It was a bundle. ??
No LDAC/ no hi-res
No auto shutoff
No individual listening.
To heavy if not dumbo the elephant
To expensive
Not even starting on the phone it self, ****less fpc. No impressive sound. Dolby atmos. Right. No dark mode on pie??? Like Huawei???? So it continues. Unfortunately.
You can get around. Sure. But it's surely not otb
Still might overall be the best iem nc bt. Or they are. So much room for improvement.
But all this before Volume controll. Hi-res listner has an amp. You'll never controll unless its by hand. ??
But all together, top tier for what's possible, and do count on like 100hours Play in.
Why hate. Sony is true underdog, but not for any fun.
These headphones are some of the best i've ever used. The noise cancelling works great. They don't seem to be suited for heavy music, like Metal, but i haven't played with the EQ yet. But listening to something like Pink Floyd or Steely Dan they sound amazing. They play every detail.
I highly recommend these, good for office use if you want to disconnect from your surroundings for a while.

I highly recommend these, good for office use if you want to disconnect from your surroundings for a while.

Surprised to hear that. I find the sound quality underwhelming. Even my old HTC wired earphone sounds better.
I bought it for the noise cancelling though.
maybe not the best but I'm pretty satisfied with this headset, especially the durability of the battery

Sound reproduction is a personal thing however I sincerley fail to see how you find these "Underwelming" I have been buying high end hifi for nearly 50 years and can safely write the Sony's are outstanding and only 'bettered' by the much more expensive Sennheisers. Wired headphones are in a different catagory all together from wirelss. unwise to compare apples with oranges.
