Hi Mods, i am a Android user who has been playing around with Android devices for almost a year now, putting ROM's and Kernels, etc on my devices. I had a Mytouch, Galaxy S 4G, and Asus Transformer. Unfortunately, i don't have time to read through all the threads and develop ROMs etc, and i do appreciate all the time and effort that the developers put into it. I am just a normal user who would like to utilize the full potential of my devices (and like to show Apple users how we can kick their A$$e$. I had a thought recently. It would be so useful to all the regular users to have a BIBLE, that gives us the general steps of rooting, installing roms, definitions of terms and abbreviations, and different mods. It doesn't need to be device specific (or maybe it does). I believe it would help everyone out a lot and help bring some uniformity to the world that is Android.
I hope someone would consider this wholeheartedly. And again, BIG THANKS to all the developers!
Yes, I too think that this sounds like an awesome idea. Something like a wiki from xda-developers. With real noob tutorials and introductions. That way, people who are interested in diving deeper into that have a starting point and xda has a recruiting effect. For example I myself would love to learn about developing from scratch because weeks ago i started my studies where I learn java and c++. Having to search for every tiny bit of information is just annoying...
theres already tutorials out there on some basic things...
Yes sure there are some tuts but nothing like a compendium..

Here are some links to get you started. There's a lot of stuff to learn, so my best advice is to be patience and lurk, read, and learn. I know nothing about your particular device, but much of this will apply.

Look for the sticky thread by Cyanogen in this forum called "some advice". Are you looking to build roms from source, or just modify existing roms?
Do you know any Java or C?
Building roms may seem fun, but it takes research and patience. Lurking github commits, textbooks, and the forums is a great start. The community is very eager to help, and that's one of my favorite parts about android. But deving shouldn't be as simple as copy paste. Where's the fun in that?
I understand where you're coming from though, I was the same way a few months ago. Built a rom from source, posted it, then realized how uninformed I was.
I am now improving my skillz by reading textbooks on Java ("Head First Java") and C ("The C Programming Language"), both available as pdf documents. I'm mucking around in kernels and am going to start writing apps as well. Its a good place to learn the framework. You could also get into theming, but that requires a little graphic design know-how.
Good luck man, and have fun with it

Me too would like to learn more about creating ROMs for android (Galaxy S I9000 here)
I do have java experience (quite a lot, actually) but I really have no idea where to start when creating a ROM
thanks
Did you ever get a kitchen going?
I have to say I am impressed with the overall performance of my Cyanogen 7 6.2.4, I was skeptical but now I am very pleased....The feel and appearance of it is just magnificent, I give many many thanks to the developers who spend countless hours porting and working with this low level phone to give us what we all want. I just have a few questions, so Im not searching numerous hours over a thread
1. Is it possible to have a Sense UI ported to our LG Optimus phones and everything in it actually work, b/c with alot of Sense UI roms, there is always something that isnt quit working ie..BT, Camera and other things
2. What does Honeycomb bring to the table that Gingerbread does not ? Also, I have heard of "Icecream", what can we expect with that version ?
3. I would love to see just one thread dedicated to teaching a complete noob everything he needs to know on cooking, flashing, ADB, or anything that has to do with Android than have a seperate thread to questions that could be ask...There are literally hundreds if not thousands of articles already on this but it would be nice if there was one centralized forum thread on everything I just said. As a novice user, Im limited to what I already know but would love to learn more.
Many thanks goes to the Dev's who spend countless hours tinkering over these Android platforms, if it werent for all of you, we would be stuck with the same boring useless stocked rom's that our LG's come with
1. work is being done by ciaox and hopefully he will come out soon with a bugless rom.
2.use google...doesn't take much time...
3.there is a sticky at starting in development forum use that....post your questions in general forum(after searching once).....
hit thanks if i helped you
Where is the best school or course for learning to program android?
Sent from my Droid X2 Eclipse Rom + BNB Theme
You should learn Java first, I guess. And then just read some communities and blogs of practicing Android developers. Also watch videos and read tutorials. Try developing simple apps and practice will make perfect I don't think any organized schooling is needed for this. Most of the Android developers I know learned this by themselves, just because they liked it and wanted to become professionals.
Check the search function this topic gets covered weekly.
It is quite impossible for someone to recommend you the best android course.
First off only people near you could recommend you one you would actually visit.
You would not go to germany if germany has the best android courses, would you?
Also it is a bit like getting your drivers license, yes you can do an android(java) course and learn something there, but you only really start learning and advancing your skills after the course when you are driving/programming yourself without preset tasks.

Hi,
If you're looking for information regarding development of ROMS, working on the actual Android operating system itself or developing hacks for the hardware, you are in the right place. XDA is an absolute goldmine of information regarding this. There are many many posts on how to cook your own ROM, how to use tools such as RSDLite and QPST; all you have to do is read inbetween the lines and dig a little deeper to understand how these tools could be used for your own purposes (retrieving/modifying Android system files for example) and you are well on your way.
If you are looking to develop Android apps and games, then take a look here and here. The reason I link to a Java Beginners site is that Android development can be done in Java, and it is a fairly good, solid language for anyone who has not previously used object orientated programming techniques or ever developed deployable applications before.
I hope this helps a little as a starting point. There is so much more I could write here but I'm not going to - as a developer, you will run into issues that people aren't going to be able to answer to you as these issues are going to be unique to you and you alone. That means you are going to have to go off and research these issues either via Google or searching online resources (such as XDA).
Hello everyone, I'm Matt and I have been learning Android (java) on my own for the past few years. I had no prior programming experience, or even a clue of what went behind it all. One year, an interest sparked in computers and mainly Android which resulted in me pursuing app development as a hobby.
I want to share the results of my tinkering/learning of Android with XDA. There is still much to learn, and I plan on improving all of my apps. Learning by myself (and the internet of course) has been a long bumpy road, no doubt. For those of you who are interested in app development, do not lose faith and maintain your determination.
