[Q] Need some serious help with SMS's - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all new here, go easy on me... haha
So I updated to gingerbread on my LG O1 (P500), but before I did that I made a backup of my texts with SMS Backup & Restore. I restored them on the new install, little did I know it would import them all as unread (roughly 5.5k of them)... so now my messaging app is completely useless - crashes every time it opens. I tried several apps to delete all the texts on the phone but they all crash, and I cant sit and let them run for a few hours because android pops up every few seconds informing me they've crashed/are lagging.
I really need to use messaging on my phone, dont care if I have the texts on the phone or not, just would like it to work... help??

Factory reset is probably your best option

how about restoring bits by bits? Say 100 at a time, and then check to see if your phone could handle them

Cheers did the factory restore. Not sure how to restore them in parts? They're all stored in one file.

DO NOT try and migrate call logs and text messages from an older version of Android!

i have been crashing left and right finally had to do a factory reset.
i was trying to bring my call logs and text/sms messages from international galaxy s2 running 2.3.4
i tried several ways, mybackup pro was the first... then just simple gosms pro backup/restore on sd card
both times it crashed my phone something crazy com.phone.service or something kept freezing, couldnt make calls or texts, etc
anyways, after factory reset 3 times i am just going to lose those logs... this is something Android needs to work on... while i HATED ITUNES... at least i could migrate all my stuff over without a hassle!
it has taken me over 5 hours to setup my Note just like my GS2!

I've had issue with GoSMS just totally screwing the pooch on its backup database, so it might have just been one of those cases for you. I was able to migrate from my XT860 just fine from a recent backup.
I used sms backup+, no problems so far. Restored 8000 texts.
I tried to import my old texts from my iphone using isms2droid and then SMS backup & Restore to restore the file that isms2droid made.
I haven't been able to run my Messaging app since then, and I think I'm going to have to factory reset this thing :-(
I used SMS Backup and Restore. No issues.
Another vote for SMS Backup and Restore. Also, he makes a similar app for call logs called Call Log Backup and Restore. I have used both going from every version of Android from 2.1-4.0.3 and back again.

[Q] Automatically backup new texts and restore on boot

Since i now have dual booting on i9100 thanks to siyahkernel
I was hoping to automatically backup new sms when recieved, and then when booting - restore any missing sms... is that possible? then it would appear seamless when switching between two roms no sms missing
ALSO only to SD card not using any data (i usually switch on the train)
Sorry but I don't think there is any apps doing that you explained :/
You can try this app thats backups your SMS to sdcard: http://slideme.org/application/sms-backup-restore

Don't know about automatic, but you could use SMSBackup from Play and manually restore.
The other way may be to look at SynchSMS, but that requires using Dropbox and data usage
Neither quite does what you're after though :-(
thanks for your reply, hmm is there no way to to have a boot script that can trigger the restore functionality of one of those programs - as i know android apps can rely on other apps surely they call and use java methods etc,
if i could invoke the method to save on shutdown or have a custom reboot command and make it save the same name everytime, and then on boot it restores the missing sms maybe its a possibility! its been a while since ive done java, might be able to get them terminal commands tho!
as with dual booting the data is seperate for each install... one thing i dnt like is going to the other rom and forgetting someone has text me xD call logs i can live without for now!
right now ive downloaded pansi sms its got built in autobackup and manual restore going to see if this is a temporary fix
EDIT:
okay so pansi sms works but... it takes ages to backup 700 messages... is there any way to only backup the last 100 sms? that would only take around 20 secs to recover

[Q] SMS/Text messages disappearing

Hi,
Sorry if this question has been answered elsewhere, but I couldn't seem to find anything on it, and everything I did find seemed to mostly be for Froyo on much older phones... The cause might still be the same but don't know.
Anyway, I recently installed SynergyRom on my Galaxy S4, I'm also admittedly a hoarder of text messages, and have 11,000 or so text messages backed up through sms backup & restore. I kind of like having them all on my phone (yes, I've read before that sometimes restored messages cause minor issues, but I like it *shrug*). Anyway, I restored the messages to my phone, and eventually when I was texting someone, the stock messaging app got a force close, after which, all of my messages had disappeared. I didn't think much of it, restored again, and then today when I received a text the app force closed again, and all my messages disappeared again. Any thoughts?
Hopefully the answer isn't just I need to be less crazy about saving texts, but if that's really the cause, that's it.. Anyway, help/suggestions would be appreciated. T hanks!
Waiting for the answer too. I did not root my phone or anything, just the original phone from store. Sometimes the messages in message app disappear. The phone shows "there is no message", the only thing I can do is create new message. After I restart the phone, the messages come back in the message app.
I know by default in the messaging settings that there is a setting check box for "delete old messages....seems after so many message it will delete from a certain point...something like 200 messages...deletes oldest first. Go in and uncheck the box...see if that helps. Having that many texts is nuts...your a texting border...

Yea, I know about limits, and that's definitely not it.. I've heard other people say the text messages come back after you restart, but I'm not sure if that's only if you restart right away without sending more texts.. Mine didn't come back after a restart at least, but I didn't restart until much later.. Thanks for the suggestions so far though!

I konw some data recoverying program will help to restore text messages from phone directly.
Not sure about retrieving from an app.
Visit CNET you might find something useful.
Was this ever solved? I'm having this too on STock mj7

[Q] SMS Messages on Lock Screen

Hi
Is it possible to see who has sent me a text from the lock screen? Had a look at the lock screen widgets but none there for that - can you download more Z2 widgets?
Thanks
Wrong Forum, this should go in the Q&A Forum.
But a combination of DashClock and DashNotifier will give you what you want.
Or use Hangouts as your messaging app. It has a lock screen widget.
Since this topic was brought up, I might as well ask here. I notice that deleting messages and conversations with the default SMS app is extremely slow. I don't know if it's because I have 30,000+ messages already but even deleting a thread with 2 messages is still slow. I really like the default SMS but is there a faster SMS app that can manage thousands of messages? Go SMS is also slowing down so I want to try a different one.
Lol... If you find one, lemme know. I'm a text-aholic, so I'm sending ~6000 a month, and I like to archive my old ones (OCD I guess). The only solution I've found is to use TitBackup and every month or so backup all messages, then put take that backup and put it on my computer, and delete all messages on the phone.

Is it the same issues with you when deleting threads? I tried SMS Backup and Restore for backing up my sms but Sony has Xperia Transfer app as well so either is convenient for sms backup. The SMS app is the real challenge though. Even my previous Galaxy S2 and my cousin's S4 have slowdown issues with their default sms app.
I think that might just be the way Android process text messages. Was your last phone any faster? I can't honestly remember if mine was (and TitBackup still does it quite fast btw).

Galaxy S2 deletes messages and threads faster. Maybe it's because it's a backup file which is why it's slower to process it? Deleting threads takes me around 20 sec or more depending on the size of the thread.

Yeah, never again am I using any kind of message backup other than TitBackup. I did a test-import of one of my old text archives, and it was done in under 2 minutes.
For now, I'm just gonna have to wait the couple hours for my SMS Backup and Restore backup to be imported, then I'm so done with it.
Can you also test how long does it take to delete a message from your backup? No need to delete the entire thread if it's important, just maybe 4 messages in the thread will do.
use Hangouts as your messaging app. It has a lock screen widget.

TitaniumBackup Contacts Restore :(

Hi,
I've been helping my dad upgrade from a stock 4.1.2 ROM which has been really playing up lately, to a nice new 4.4.4 ROM Ehndroix which I have to say I'm very impressed with. It's breathed life into what was really a terrible phone just a few hours ago.
Here's the problem though Google Sync adamantly refused to backup his contacts before upgrading. I tried everything to make it work but it just would not do it. So, I decided to chance Titanium. Normally, when I've done Titanium, it's been messages that haven't worked, however this time, messages are fine and contacts is broken, causing the standard android.......acore is forced close issue.
I know I should have made a vCard and I'm desperately hoping I've got one backed up from when I did it last time, because I normally do, but I didn't this time. My bad, I know.
It must be possible to go into the raw tar files and somehow extract the numbers. Even if it's just name to number with WordPad, ill bloody type them in manually or chuck a quick apk together to do it for me. Just wondering if anyone can give me some advice here what to do.
Please no captain hindsights "you really should have used SMS Backup Plus" or whatever what's done is done, just trying to make the best of it
Thanks

Contacts restore from titanium backup is not recommended when upgrading or changing roms as there will be different contact apps. With tar files, I don't think there is any way to extract contacts from them (well none that I've heard of). If you look at a vcard structure, you should be able to recreate a similar file that should work under the contacts app. It is a very complex structure so you can use the tool in office outlook (assuming that you created contacts in outlook) to export contacts into a .vcf file.
