i had a sgs but just broke it with water dmg 2 months ago was great aside from battery life and gps and of course that horrible lag
tried many mods darky , doc , miui ... etc with different lagfix , kernel ext3 . ext4 .. etc but still the device lags alot , the best was miui glitch minimum lag but still the lag is there
i used nexus one with 2.3 and even HD2 with 2.2 and compared them to my phone ... loading games i load them like 1.5~2 x faster than both but while in menu , exiting apps , switching between apps and opining apps both devices do these things much faster and they dont lag at all while mine lags in everything and the same issue with my other friend sgs while sgs2 shows that its faster than both phones
now i want to buy a new phone and thinking about the sgs2 but i dont want to fall in the same mistake and end up with a laggy phone
so what do u think of sgs2 , does it lag much ? or it doesnt lag at all? does it have any lag issue ?
i want you to tell me honestly and excuse my poor English
PS : I 'm not comparing them to how IOS is , i know how fast is iOS but i'm not looking to buy any IPHONE cus i want an android
The word 'Lag' is a relative one. If you are coming from those devices then you won't notice any, but iPhone users have some trouble getting in, iOS is silky smooth, can't say the exact same for Android.
Remember, I am not a fan of either.
Regards.
Every piece of hardware in the world will have software lag on it occassionaly, at least. My experience is that this blows all over my HD2 with every ROM I had on there, and I tried a LOT of different builds on that.
Seriously, if you've had a HD2 running Android faster than your SGS2 then there's either some bad software involved or you've got a faulty device. The difference is more than obvious.
what i meant with lag that the phone get stuck and wont accept commands
i have been android user the for more than a year now , never bought any iphone
but compairing my sgs to hd2 and nexus 1 its the laggiest no mater what u do with it
nexus 1 and hd 2 were very smooth and dont lag when installing more than one up
my sgs lags while downloading a single up and nearly freeze while installing it , cant even brows contact smoothly while installing an app unlike hd2 and nexus 1

So you're actually saying that a HD2 running Android is faster than the SGS, but not faster than the SGS2?
Edit: Sorry, I just reread your first post. I see what you're saying now. So basically, you've not got the SGS2, but you've had the SGS and wonder if it's that much better? In that case, I'm out, since I've never even played with the original SGS. All I can say is the the SGS2 is faster and smoother than anything I ever had running on my HD2, and I generally stuck to Nexus builds because I prefer the original stock Android experience.
Coming from an iPhone, I would say the S2 is on par as far as homescreen "lag" goes. As for not accepting commands, the only time I have had this happen is if I lock the phone using setCPU . Other than that, the phone is FAST. I don't notice any lag at all, and most apps launch just about instantly.

i dont have a sgs2 and thats why i'm asking about it before i buy it
and i did compare my sgs1 2.3 darky 10 ext4 wiped to my friends hd2 2.2 mine lags in menu and while installing but its faster when it come to loading games by 1.5~2x times
his never lags while doing anything just smooth
There are small micro jitters here and there with andriod OS, not a smooth as iOS.
Barely any lag in normal use in things like web surfing and using the interface.
But I get extreme lag using BBC Iplayer(Not the app) in HD or any other video source that is in HD excluding youtube. The video lags and the sound it out of sync. Pretty much unwatchable.
I know that these videos aren't optimised for use on a mobile but it would have been nice if they didn't lag.
Apart from that, all other videos are fine.
Silky smooth here, underclocked to 1000GHZ. Had a sgs and it drove me maaaaaaaad!

Why does everyone think ios is extreme fast?
Even my sgs loads apps quiker than my iphone 4.
It does maybe sometimes not as fluid but always fast.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
I agree faster loading time but unfortunatly not fluid as ios.
I own a Sgs, Sgs2, desire, desire hd, nexus s and the smoother ar the desire hd but it is heavy as a rock and not resistant as the sgs2
No lag on mine ever since updated.to XXKG6. No problem on either Ninphetamine or lulz kernel.

On mine there is no lag with the stock ROM. Once I installed Go Launcher, the swiping of the homescreen while was not laggy did have a lower framerate than the stock Touchwiz 4 launcher which was silky smooth.
Never had ANY lag at all since the SGS2 released. It really depends on the usage. But mine, no lag.
No lags on mine. Unrooted and stock rom 2.3.3.
Ah, well... actually to be honest yes, now that I think about it... sometimes I experience a very annoying lag of about 1 second at each and every character I type in the standard text box of forums, while posting. Each character appears about 1 second after having tapped it on the virtual keyboard.
Not sure if it happens with all the browsers, but it's very annoying indeed.
In addition, under the same circumstances when tapping on the text for editing, the "arrow" cursor appears shifted down of about 2-3 rows, with respect to where it actually is in the text.
Not sure if anybody has found a solution for this.
All of these newer phones, EVO 3d, sensation, sgs2 etc. will hardly ever have lag, in my case I have mine underclocked and still no lag, and never had lag.

The question really boils down to does it lag, Yes or No.
There are animation lags from time to time on the S2, thats just how andriod works. Even if you stuff in a quadcore with 3Ghz per core nothings gonna change due to how the software works, probably even if the memory speed is increased 10 folds there will be lags.
No and yes nothings perfect. Ive experienced it before root. Why are you thinking of swtching to, a diffrent OS?

Im currently using CM9 latest nightly, but as much as I love AOSP, I never feels as smooth as samsung based roms. Why is that? Kernel? Drivers? Optimizations?
If its kernel, which is (Opinion based) the smoothest available?
thnx
Im looking for the smoothest experience, is there a kernel or any t

ATM cm9 roms have a bit touch issue, so it feels like its not smooth
But when their wasn't any touch issue then people said its much smoother than stock
once you taste aosp ics you never go back
just wait till it hit stable and samsung rom wont even come close
^^^ Thats how I feel. But im kinda picky, thats why I brought it up. I noticed the touch issue and its part of the issue IMO. But can Exynos drivers/optimizations also be contributing? because stock ICS roms get much better framerate in the GPU tests than CM9 (never mind the overall score) So maybe the CPU isnt being used to its full potential
I flashed a buddys Vibrant with Passion ICS and also noticed that a single core 512mb ram last gen phone felt smoother than my exynos monster. Same goes to the Vivid when i tried one at the ATT store that had the ICS update. When i flipped the homescreen carrusell in Sense, it was like when I first saw a motionflow 120hz TV
Hope things get sorted out because I love AOSP and would never want to go back to the cartoony TW

Its really smooth and fast and the look it's very AOSP, no TW bloat.
Im very new to android and was very surprised that the GS 3 was giving me lower than expected framerates when playing NOVA 3. I wrongly expected that the phone would be able to run all games at 60fps. bad NOVA 3 seems to run at between 40fps - 60fps...... very rarely staying at a constant 60fps. or is it just my phone?? i have noticed the same with riptide too. most of the time it is very smooth but when all of the jets are on the screen at the same time the framerate drops... so im really hoping that jelly bean will help to fix this or not???
Why dont you get an iphone if you are not satisfied with the best PHONE
JellyBean is not a MIRACLE that it will make fastest phone more faasstest!

To answer your question in simple terms, No Jelly Bean will not increase the performance of gaming on the S3.
Project Butter enables VSYNC for window transitions and animations in the operating system, meaning that the FPS is increased to a constant 60FPS. Obviously other things are done so that the devices can handle this change, but this is what happens at basic level. For this to be incorporated into games, you will have to get the developer to make the same changes and make it work effectively with your phone's hardware.
But no, project butter only affects the Android OS animations, and not gaming.
Someone is welcome to correct me if I am wrong and I will change this post accordingly.
If i wanted to get an iphone i would have got one instead of the S3. i know that jelly bean improves the fps of the ui to 60fps, but what i wanted to know if anyone knows is will jeyy bean also improve the framerate of games?
Consequently No.
IF YOU LIKE MY WORK, THANK ME BY THE BUTTON BELOW
thanks DarkRyoushii. all i needed to know!
This is completely incorrect, sorta? If you install Nova Launcher, it's essentially a game. I know you don't play it, but it's an application that does exactly the same as a game, uses your phones CPU and RAM. Project Butter works by ramping up the CPU each and every time the screen is touched in all aspects of the OS, be gaming or custom launcher. This may not increase the speed of a game or improve it, because it's mainly more responsive to touch so I'm not too sure about that bit.

You can, with some manual work and root, already move the apps to the external sd.

Higher frame-rates and more aggressive cpu scaling won't increase battery life.
I differ from all who said it doesnt improve on games. Games that used to be laggy on my nexus with ics now play smoothly on jellybean
Ugghhh, So many misinformed people. The reason games don't play smoothly is because they're not optimized to fit with the modified mali400 gpu. Give it time, games will be optimized. Hell nova3 runs like butter on my s2 and the gpu is similar. It is possible for an os to increase gpu performance, ics saw a 20% improvement over gb. But i doubt they changed Amy code dealing with that for jb.

No, it will not.
The reason games are smoother and faster on the iPhone compared to the S3 is the same reason why PS3 games are smoother than the latest and fastest pcs. It's because games are optimised specifically for the iPhone, while android games are all lousy ports.
To have a game run super well on the s3, we'll need to hope for a Mali-optimised game, which won't happen any time soon, considering the influence of ios and tegra.
Yes it will improve the framerate somehow. In theory it shouldn't but it does.
For example, before Samsung Galaxy S2 got the ICS update, on Nenamark 2 it only achieved around 47fps, now with 53fps with ICS update.
Another example would be the Nexus 7, while it has a Tegra 3 built in, it's GPU is a lower clock at 427Mhz (Something like that) and achieves 55fps on Nenamark 2 compared to Asus Transformer Prime with a higher clock GPU (533Mhz) and only achieving around 48fps. (Both have same resolution, but different Android OS, Jelly Bean vs Ice Cream Sandwich).
I'll be getting the Galaxy S3 (Again) but the blue version (Grey-ish really), but I remember that Nova 3 and Riptide (With Tegra effects) played smoothly on Siyahkernel v1.2.x, I don't know now, but give it a try.
It won't necessarily require JB to make games run faster. It'll require Samsung to provide updated drivers for the Mali GPU. Whether that comes with an ICS or a JB update is irrelevant.
I have been looking at my girlfriends brand new S3 with stock firmware and i have noticed that ICS is actually smoother than every JB leak i have installed and also smoother than my Omega 26 Rom. My Omega 26 Rom has all of the bloat removed and it doesnt make any difference.
In fact i would go as far to say that hers is smoother than mine!
Im starting to think that all this Rooting and Flashing causes more problems than it might solve!
Smoothness doesn't necessarily mean speed though
Eg. Reset transition speeds to 1 if you have them on 0.5 is a good way of demonstrating what I mean

I've noticed the exact opposite. My girlfriend's phone seems so sluggish with stock ICS compared with my JB ROM. I think JB has been really snappy since at least LI6.

I kinda get what youre saying. I have 3 devices on which I have the new cm10, dli8 and lh1. LH1 wins in all categories except for jellybean smootness of the dli8 leak. ICS is still king.
remember, these are still leaks, may still be bugs...
No. The jellybean is smoother. And cm10 is waaaay faster
People just have different ideas of smoothness. Some people think the Galaxy Nexus with Jelly Bean is smoother than the GS3 with ICS, not a chance, Some stupid people even think that the Iphone 3Gs is smoother than the GS3, which is just plain retarded. Some people think that the iphone 4 and 4s kill even the high end Androids in smoothness, wrong again. Some people think that sense 4.0 isn't a stuttery mess and that the One X is actually close in performance to the GS3, you guessed it, wrong.
Just go with your eyes.
If i were to hazard a guess. AOSP probably has about 30 frames of animation that just cycle every half a second, locked at 60fps. While touchwiz has like 40 frames of animation or more that is usually locked 60fps but not always like JB. So yeah, during the times that ICS touchwiz is at 60 fps, it should appear smoother.
Basically if ICS doesn't drop below 60fps or have memory que issues then technically we wouldn't see project butter. We don't even technically see it. We only notice it when the system chugs, and if project butter kicks in properly, we won't even see that. lol
Well its subjective, you need to ask yourself what do you mean by smoothness? For me its fast respons when opening apps and having no lag or stutterings. For this JB leak li8 does the job
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
people keep raving about how smooth the iphone is but it's noticeably slower than android, esp the high end ones.. the smoothness is just there to cover the lags
I have owned 5 iPhone's and I can tell you now that ios strongest point is the consistently fast transitions. You can move around the OS 10x faster than android. Android is filled with loads of pointless animations and transitions that just make it slower.
I found my problem to be a widget called application manager. It caused a stutter in my transition from Page to Page. I minimised this and now it's smooth.
But I'd still argue that there is no difference between my girlfriends ICS and my JB

Hey guys,
Are there any Galaxy Mega users going back to the Note 2? I went back after using the Mega 6.3 for around 2 weeks and I gotta tell ya, I'm happy I went back.
The Mega feels so slow and laggy, I'm constantly finding myself having to clear the RAM and close all tasks just to speed things up.
Swiping left to right always have a slight lag, opening the app draw has lag, heck even returning via home button is laggy. Exiting Apps like the browser seems to drop the animation of exiting it down to like 20fps.
Everything just feels like it stutters and lags, the phone feels like it's constantly crawling and the "pinch-in" lag is back too.
Don't get me wrong I love this phone, mostly for it size but in no way is it a bad phone. But I am slightly disappointed a phone with a processor that has similar instructions A15 isn't 100% smooth.
I've seen alot of you guy say you have a buttery smooth Mega, I wish my was the same, but it's far from buttery.
All in all, I'm happy I went back to the Galaxy Note 2, it feels so much faster and smoother.

I hear you. The only slowness I am experiencing is the android notification bar. But its getting progressively worse. I disabled all animations and it sped the notification for a little but but now it's slow again. The device is very snappy but the ridiculously slow notification bar swipe is unacceptable. I am waiting for the Note 3 now......
sorry to hear you are having poor performance. Again I've only experienced iit when swyping down on the notification bar.
Hmmm I've been playing with my mega a week. I should of put that better ha .
It is a bit laggy n jerky now and again. But for £300 I'm really impressed and it exceeds my needs. Especially with screen size, design and how slim it is.
I'm selling my note 2 on eBay. And staying with the mega 6.3.

I'm positive that a software update will fix the lags. I feel like Samsung rushed the software for the Mega 6.3 that's why it's not that optimized for the processor.
I own both Note II and Mega 6.3 I9205. The slowdown you mentioned has got something to do with samsung launcher and the rom itself. Update
the ROM to the latest version available. I think that was XXUAMG4 or better yet download the customized one available in this forum (android development). The mega launcher was entirely different from GS4 and Note2. It support landscape mode and the built-in widget resizes accordingly.
I think this was taken from touchwiz tablets. Try to use Nova Launcher instead, then see if you still experience noticeable slowdowns. My mega 6.3 is butter-smooth with Nova launcher. I have never experienced any slowdowns at all, and will never go back to samsung's laggy default laucher. Also try to enable "Force GPU rendering" in the Developer's Section settings. Do not under-estimate power of Snapdragon 400 vs Exynos 4212. It's a hell lot faster in FPU. In fact in most benchmark, its faster than note 2 specially the graphics department. I confirmed this using the latest 3DMark. Dual-core vs quad-core does not make sense anymore. The CPU architecture is what really matters.
Also, the 1.5GB ram is more than enough for daily tablet/phone use. That includes gaming. My Nexus 7 is very fast running JB 4.3 with only 1GB of ram. My Windows 7 Pro netbook, which am using right now, only comes with 1GB of ram but still perform quite decently in multitasking considering that Windows 7 has got more bloatwares in it that Android JB and IOS combined.
I also use Nova Launcher and never had any slowdowns. I find my Mega smoother than my Nexus 7 and my original Note on custom ROM.

Thanks, I'll have to update it then because right now, whether it's the launcher or ROM it's ruining the experience.
I tried Nova Launcher and it was equally as bad if not worse the Touchwiz, it was still jerky and laggy.
And I agree, the benchmarks for the Snapdragon 400 are great and beat the Exynos 4 alot, but for me personally at the moment in terms of everyday use the Note 2's performance is so much better and smooth. I'd really like to keep the Mega, but unless the performance improves dramatically within a new update then I'll be keeping the Note 2. I'll try a custom ROM and the latest update, fingers crossed.
I experienced the slow notification bar and I was running ADW launcher. I disabled animations and it still was slow. I returned my Mega because of this. It was a total deal breaker.
Yes your right it lags sometimes
But thats why I am waiting CM team hopefully or anyone to build AOKP or CM or AOSP

And maybe CM coming over on the big screen ^^
I don't know exactly why some mega 6.3 owners experienced some significant slowdowns.
Maybe because of the ff:
1. Outdated ROM. Try to install the latest available rom even if its not for your country (XXUAMG4).
2. Stock launcher from samsung. Use Nova launcher or any other payware launcher of your choice.
3. Use Seeder program. I may help speed things up.
4. Flash stock kernel after rooting and stop using vcore2 kernel
5. You may have a faulty slow microSD.
6. Some other apps you have installed maybe affecting your otherwise speedy JB 4.2.2
