So why I can't play youtube in background nor in browser (Not even in tabs wtf?) nor in app? Same with other music sites in browser. Also if I lock the screen music goes...
I got felling I don't have multitasking phone. But music can be played in background. I believe there is some mod or app that can do this? Dude we are in 2011 and s2 is one of most powerful phones. So what are guys at google thinking?
So what I need to do in order to play youtube music in background?
Feel free to voice your concerns eloquently to Google, http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/list
You cannot play youtube videos in the background, your alternatives would be to listen to music from music sources (isn't that what people normally do?) or download the music from the videos manually.
Your post is slightly confusing but am i right in thinking that the main issue here is that YouTube will for some reason not play on your phone yeah, it may sound very obvious but are you sure you have an Internet connection, have you tried with
WiFi?
I can think of absolutely no reason as to why YouTube will not work on your phone unless somehow your phone has become corrupted, i have the YouTube app and also YouTube in my browser and both play fine.

no, he means he can play youtube but as soon as doing anything else on the phone youtube will stop playback. Its the same with all our GS2s, even if you open youtube in a browser tab as soon as you navigate away from that tab to do something else, (even staying in the browser with a new tab), then youtube stops playback.
I agree it is quite annoying that its not capable of running in the background.

ah right, cant say it really bothers me that much..
You're better using the TubeMate app.
It'll allow you to download the music/videos and play them as mp3 files on the stock music player. You can then place your samsung galaxy s2 into sleep mode and play music in the background.

That is an answer but do not a solution because do not give us a choice..
Even in my N900 Maemo5 (it is a 2009 Os) I can listen in background all the videos i want plus all the music i want.... All simultaneously.

Agree. This can be an useful app (If I would need to download something on android from youtube) but I still have no solution to the problem.
I want to listen music in background not download it. Or Imagine using s2 as a mp3 player connected to speakers. I would need to download all videos I want to listen. (not practical, time and space consuming...)
Now I still don't get it: Are android engineers so stupid at all, or what is the problem that the thing is still not implemented?
Anyone know if ICS will maybe bring it?

Videos are meant to be watched. Do you not understand this? I've already given you the correct place to report any issues/feature requests you may have. Also, just so you know, calling the devs stupid is idiotic. If you're so smart, write your own software to play videos in the background.
Maybe when you think about it for a few minutes, you'll realise the very idea does not make sense.
When i had the stock rom, i was watching a long video in youtube, then i started shaving, and i put the phone to sleep by pressing the power button, and the video kept playing, i was perplexed because i always wanted this from youtube, to be able to play with your screen off.
Videos are meant to be watched, but reviews and other stuff, or music with just a picture in stead of a video is not meant to be watched, so this would be an usefull app.
Btw: i was on 2.3.4 stock .
personally id like it as i often listen to music via youtube, would be nice to be able to leave it playing while i surfed the web at the same time.
Hey do any of you have the youtube apk for the version before this latest update? I dont like this update it pauses my videos if i lock the screen.. Plz help.. Thanks.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
This is such a oversight for the youTube app on my GS2...
Watching a video and lets say I get an email, get a text message (Handcent pop up)...
Video stops playing completely and I have to restart it.... wtf??
Lets say I need to check or write an email / text - App minimizes but closes the video feed and audio with it, forced to restart.
Its annoying and un-needed.

Sigh
It IS multitasking and to suggest otherwise is just being a troll.
The YouTube app pauses video because IT'S VIDEO!!!
Alternative solutions have already been posted, but people keep harping on about the YouTube app specifically. It is not intended to play videos in the background. It is intended to play videos and then, quite correctly, pause them when you go to do something else, so that when you come back you can continue watching. Videos are for watching.
The problem here is that some people are taking 1 aspect of the YouTube app (namely audio output) and then expecting it to act like apps that are specifically made for audio output. That's stupid, incorrect and unfair.
What the YouTube app does is correct. If you don't like it then complain to Google and let them laugh at you instead.
All that said, I do understand why people are asking for this. It's just wrong to blame the YouTube app for functioning perfectly 100% correct when it simply doesn't do something that you want. It's like complaining that your car doesn't fly.
Anyone that's really bothered by this would probably be better doing some googling on Java, the Android SDK and the YouTube API and then combining that knowledge into a solution that other members of XDA could use.
QueueTube appears to accomplish what you want.

Thats excactly what i was looking for, only problem is that it doesnt stream in HQ, so the audio quality isnt very good.. Even though youtube is for videos, we should be able to lock the screen without it stopping, like the standard video app, if watching a longer video or listening to music at work and want easy changing of songs
try NextVid... it lets you minimize youtube videos while you use other apps
Sorry if im abit late on this, but this is how i solve this issue, the trick is to use flash instead of html5 (correct me if i am wrong).
1. download Maxthon Browser. (I found this browser allows you to have multiple tabs and flash will play in the background tabs unlike dolphin browser)
2. navigate to youtube (if it direct you to the mobile page, click on the desktop link below)
3. Pressing home button / or changing tabs / or switch to standby will not stop the audio playback (terminating or closing the browser will of course stop the playback)
down side is that if u mess up u could have overlapping audios from various running flash videos or youtube videos.
Using atrix thou.. donnoe if it works for sgs2..
I've searched Google and this forum, and cannot find an app or program that will allow me to play YouTube videos in the background.
It's annoying because I use GoSMS Pro, with the pop up picture option (the the contact photo pops up in the corner), and when I open the application, the video stops. Not a big deal. Until I'm done with the text, and hit play again, then it has to re-load the whole video, and 50% of the time, I lose my video progress, which is annoying when watching DOTA 2 videos (usually between 30 and 60 minutes long). again, not a massive deal when I'm at home where I havegreat internet. But normally I watch these videos outside of my house, and the internet is much slower, meaning it takes forever to load.
Any ideas?
Apparently YouTube has a feature that was recently discovered that will let you play videos in the background but it is not enabled yet. Until then PVSTAR+ available in the Play store and let's you listen to your YouTube playlist in the background.
OG Youtube
Hi,
for some time now basically all browsers switched to integrated video playback and I hate it.
The integrated player is simply said pure ****. Is there a way to disable the HTML5 player and open all videos in websites in a player app (e.g. MX Player)? I watch videos in fullscreen anyway so there is no problem with an app opening instead of this laggy **** player. (Also MX Player can run in Background while playing Youtube for example).

If it's an embedded Youtube video and you have the Youtube app, you can click on the link on the top portion of the video (or click on the Youtube logo) and it will open in the app.
Yeah, but it's not only about YouTube. A lot of news sites I regularly visit have their own videos.
I have often been playing epic music from youtube through app PVSTAR+ with screen-off, but since today it doesnt work anymore.
the original google play youtube app doesnt support playback with screen off and hence it is totaly useless for someone who wants only to listen to music (screen on in that case only drain battery)
My question is. Is there any app (or way) witch would be able to play youtube music videos with the screen off?
That would be nice. I'm also looking for an app like that.
Search for OGYouTube app here on xda, you can playing when is screen off, also you can download video or MP3.
Give "Audio Pocket " a try in the Play store, I found it today and it works well.
