I have an import galaxy 2 so was able to buy a $50 all you can eat GoPhone package and have unlimited data for $50.
Its worked for six months, but since my last billing cycle, I've lost all data on the galaxy.
Weirdly, when I put the sim card in the AT&T brick phone I bought it with, the internet works fine...
whats going on and how do I get net back on the galaxy?
Is there a way they can ban internet on one particular phone? I always kept data under 2gb per month on my galaxy even though its ssupposedly unlimited.
thanks

They may have detected that you had a smartphone IMEI. Either that or it's something with the APN settings.
But can they just stop internet on ONE imei, and let it work on other cells with internet (what is currently happening now). I.e, I have internet on the brick phone the sim came with, but not now on the galaxy. I did tether it for about 10mb during last billing cycle, but as its import I dont think they can detect that.
Would phoning them and telling them the IMEI is for an import Pantech feature phone be a good idea (i.e one of the phones they allow with unlimited data)?
also, it is a british unit so they dont have the IMEI on their database,.

Probably not a good idea, just in case what you worry they did, they actually did. That would mean they have seen the sgsii and the pantech, and have recorded which one can use the internet.
Do that as a last resort. For now see if there are different apns available to use. Or even more so, try someone else's android, ideally an sgsii - global or local, with the apn you're using now and see if it works.

Thanks.
I tried the sim in an unlocked Nokia N95 and it had no internet... but, it didn't have the APN access route for AT&T internet on the list of options when I tried to connect... hmmm.
So you think dont call AT&T??
I've tried different APns too - and nothing !
any clue? I guess I have to phone AT&T.
Dont get it.... I called AT&T gave them the IMEI and told them it was one of their Feature Phones (but import model). They searched the IMEI and it didn't show up.
they said that there are no limitations on my account and suggested I bring it to a shop for them to adjust the net settings... obviously I cant do that with my galaxy or they will realise its a smart phone. Ive even just done a hard reset and still no internet!
Anyone have ANY clue what is going on?

With Go phone plan you should have wap.cingular in your APN settings instead of phone

Just create new APN with any name and wap.cingular in APN, nothing else and put checkbox next to it. Also it may sound stupid to ask, but is there checkmark on Use packet data checkbox?
hi, so in Mobile Network Settings I have:
Use Packet Data - > TICK
Network Mode: GSM/WCMA (Auto Mode)
and in ACCESS POINT NAMES:
Just one optionL "Cingular 410"
which if I click on, has apn: wap.cingular
What am I doing wrong? !
ATT has ways to tell of it is a smartphone or not. Not by imei but by what the phone sends to the network when it connects. They have found a way to block data on smartphones unless you have a smartphone data plan on there. Your MMS as it is routed differently threw the message center will still work but any other type of data connection is denied by their servers.

****, so they've finally figured this out??
Hmm, is there a way I can roll it back? How come all the other dumphone plan ppl using these sims in their galaxies aren't having problems?

Yeah I heard you can buy their nokia gsm handset and just put the sim in another phone, i.e the galaxy.
I'd be willing to try this i guess.
Just went into AT&T shop and they said they could detect I was using a smart phone so pulled internet. Their alternative for the same service was about 90$ per month.
The cell market is so different in usa compared to uk where I am from. There I can get unlimited everything for about 30 dollars a month on about five different networks. Here in USA it's a chore being even able just to buy a sim card by itself!

Instead of goig through all of this with AT&T why not try to use it on Simple Mobiles network. Since you imported it and its able to access the AT&T network, more or less, I take it that its unlocked. You could use it on their network and have unlimited data 3G=$50 or 4G=$60. Here's the link if you wanna check it out. www.mysimplemobile.com

EDIT: It does... So this means basically I have to get a walmart phone and take the sim out and put it in my galaxy. but seeing as AT&T alredy figured my cell is a smart phone, and the walmart network uses at&t towers, will I the walmart sim also realize im on smart phone???

With simple mobile I don't think it matters whether you have a smartphone or not because they have a plan specifically for Android Smartphones all the needs to be is unlocked and you'll have to change the APN setting but they explain all that on the site. Ill check into it more and let you know what I find.
Edit: Just called and they said your phone is supported and you will have access to talk, text and web.

If you would've read the fine print for the $50 unlimited data for the gophone, it does not support smart phones, you have to buy a seperate data package. I'm using h2o wireless pay as you go, no issues so far.

I know that this question has been asked before, and yes I did the research.
Basically I am wondering:
- Will the $15 "dumbphone unlimited AT&T data plan" work with T-Mobile Vibrant?
- Does it matter which Vibrant I get? I've heard from people, that I have to get i9000 to do this.. Will ANY T-Mobile Vibrant work with this?
> Can I unlock it myself or is it only specifically unlocked ones or what?
- I am in Bergen County (North New Jersey) area.. What kind of 3G do they use? WIll Vibrant 3G work with AT&T?
I know people have been doing it I am just curious if it STILL works.
In addition, I'm in Family Plan.. Primary line WAS iPhone 4 (I sold it today, which is why I'm considering Vibrant).
Will they make a huge fuss about me not having the iPhone 4 anymore and all that? I'm currently grandfathered under $30 data plan.
Thanks a lot in advance!!!
I don't think you can use the $15 unlimited plan with the vibrant but I'm 90% sure you can use the $30 unlimited plan. You need to have an unlocked vibrant. You should be able to get 3g with no problem because the vibrant supports 850 and 1900 3g bands but you may need to enable 850 in the settings. The i9000 can only get 1900 so I guess the vibrant would be a better choice. I don't what kind of 3g your area uses but you should be able to use it.
Thanks for reply
I know for a fact people have used their unlocked Vibrants on AT&T for $10 unlimited dumbphone if they have unlimited texting too or $15 without the texting
Curious if it STILL works and also what kind of Vibrant I need to get
Lastly if itll work in NJ area.
It's what I am using with my unlocked Vibrant
I am currently using the $10 data plan with the unlimited family texting option.
Unlocking is easy with this phone using the internal code procedure outlined on the Vibrant forum.

I can also confirm that the dumbphone data plan works for me. I have the $15/mo. one (since I don't have texting-I use Google Voice ) and 3G does indeed work but only with the 1900MHz band. To unlock, you can use this guide. There is also an app on the market that does it automatically I think.

I'll just answer any future questions of this nature:
If you're not on T-Mobile, NO CARRIER WILL KNOW WHAT PHONE YOU'RE USING. The only way they can know is by deciphering your IMEI, which they will reference to the IMEI's in their database. This is why AT&T mentions unlocked Nokias being open to use the $10/$15 data plan: it's because AT&T has no idea what phone it is because Nokia did not give them IMEI's to these phones. If you have an AT&T branded phone, then of course AT&T will know the IMEI. If you have a T-Mobile/Cincinnati Bell/etc phone, they will have absolutely no idea what phone you're using.
So to answer your question: As far as AT&T's billing dept is concerned, you are not using a Vibrant. You are using an unlocked phone. No further questions. They might think you own the phone pictured below:

NOT True.
I formerly worked at T-Mobile in the Tier 2 PDA support department. While *some* unlocked phones would show up as unknown in our database, the majority of them showed their manufacturer and model numbers perfectly fine. I knew as soon as I pulled up the warranty tool (this is how we checked what phone you had) if you were running an iPhone, a Nokia N95 or any non-T-Mobile phone.
For example, I would have a lot of people call up and want to configure their "new iPhone" only to have to inform them that, sadly, they'd actually bought a "scIphone" (a Chinese knock-off)... These would actually show up, name & model number, in our database!
The reason the generic data works on many unlocked phones, is they don't program the networks to detect and require premium data on those models, since they are a small fraction of the phones in use, and to check against every phone made in the world would add to the overhead and reliability of the network.

That will be good if it worked.
I bought a vibrant after checking with T-mobile if I was covered (they say yes and that anyway there is no problem because I could roam on ATT network). It was a lie, no roaming on the $50 plan and no T-mobile network at all in my area. So I canceled and tried H2O (ATT network) and it works well where I live (with 3g) but I get just 100MB of data.
So I guess I am going with ATT pre-paid $50 unlimited...
Thanks everyone for the answers
so curious where you able to get the 50 unlimited everything to work? I just picked it up and data is a no go, i have a 3g connecion but i can't load pages. very irritating. anyone have any idea's?
Hello everybody, recently AT&T released a new pay as you go plan which is 50$ a month for unlimited everything. Unfortunately the unlimited data does not work on smartphones which is disappointing.
I recently switched to this plan because 50$ a month for unlimited everything is a great deal, what I was wondering was if someone could find a way to allow data to work on this plan\phone.
When you try to use firefox or similar browser it just says the page cannot be displayed, on the facebook android app it gives you a message that tells you data was refused.
I would gladly donate 20$ to anyone who could figure this out, and give me the fix. it seems like something a developer would know how to fix so if anyone has any ideas shoot them at me. If one of them works they will get a nice 20$ donation Thanks.
It sounds like AT&T itself is blocking the data connection.
Sent from my x10 Platinum
Exactly, but it doesn't block the connection if my pay as you go sim card is in a non-smart phone. There must be something that tells at&t you have a smartphone, and maybe there's a way to stop that.
What a rip off, i pay 15 bucks a month for unlimited.data
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Cell service providers such as AT&T have the ability to know what phone you are using through your sim card.
so it'll be hard to find a way around it, but it's not impossible.
Sent from my x10 Platinum
It's because it's an x10a from at&t if so it's the IMEI that gave it away they have a log of all there numbers if you call an be real nice they will give you the unlock code for free (I did it and it was free any one can on at&t) Then flash a Stock rom and then wait a month or so an cancel that sim and go to another store or have your friend start up another sim. A wahoo
So Patricks_book you're saying all I have to do is unlock my phone and data will work on my smartphone even though the 50$ unlimited everything plan doesn't allow smartphones to have unlimited data?
I don't think unlocking the phone changes your phone's IMEI number, if that's what you are wondering.
I used to have a Nokia E72 that covered AT&T's 3G frequency bands but never sold by AT&T. I don't use that any more but when I did, it worked with their $15 unlimited data plan (for a post-paid plan) that can only be used for dumb phones. It seemed then that AT&T didn't recognize the E72's IMEI # as a smartphone.
I don't know if this works on GoPhone plans now.....

when you sign up though you sign up using a sim, not an imei. so your account is only linked to your sim card.
I have switched phones three times and all I did was pop my sim into a different phone.
I think though that it recognizes you are using 3g or hspa data and that is why it blocks it. Aren't those plans for gsm only?
Its about what APN you connect via. Have a look @ this. Settings > Wireless and networks > Mobile Networks > AT&T and you'll need to configure the apn ... I have no idea which one ... But well , thats all I can help .

Yeah you're right your account is linked only to your SIM card otherwise you won't be able to swap phones. But at least on AT&T they seem to be able to recognize if a smartphone (sold by AT&T) is being used.
A few years ago when AT&T only had a $30 unlimited data plan for smartphones or $15 ulmimited for dumbphones, they started forcing subscribers who use the $15 plan for smartphones switch to correct data plans. Many AT&Ters discussed this issue then and the only conclusion drawn based on their experience was that it was through their IMEI #.

hmmm but if you never gave them your imei they would have no way of knowing...
I would say it has to do with either your apn, the bands you're using (and the fact that you're using 3g/hspa), or just they can recognize the pure volume of data you are using.
They have ALL the IMEIs for the phone from the manufactures and from the ones that are or where on their network and when you use your phone it comes up in their system like if you call in to support and they ask for it there just checking to see if it's the right one. So you can try an app like Privacy Blocker to change your IMEI I do not know if it will work but it is an option in the app ( not on the phone just on out going signals for apps ?) An if it does work PLEASE post it in the forum.
Good luck to us all if it does .

That's not correct at all....
the imei does not pop up, I worked for a phone company before.
Unless you sign up with a phone and have given it to them, they do not have your imei...
If the phone was first purchased from AT&T then they have the IMEI. Or just like when an app has access to your account it can read your IMEI your sim card can read your IMEIs it's connected too your phone number contract/pay as you go. Anyone of them even Wally world (Walmart) who ever you get a sim card from can read your sim card/IMEI.

Its a bullsh!t plan. I got this plan, got data to work just fine, but had alot of trouble with it. ie- Market apps, took FOREVER to download.. That was the first downfall. Yesterday morning, I noticed my phone was in Edge mode. I proceeded to reset it, change the Network options in the debug menu, and play with the APN. This morning.. Still Edge. My conclusion? They obviously shut off my 3G. Now, The problem I have with this, is that I havnt used over 100 mb of data yet, and it hasnt even been a week since I got this service. Stay away from this plan.. GARBAGE. Now, as much as I loathe paying an EXTRA 20 bucks a month, Im taking the dive and goin with TMobile. I need my 3g....
I just kind of skimmed over this post (new here) and this alone made me sign up cause I just order X10 recently.
I have this question though; if is not IMEI# that at&t block you with, then is it possible a reflashing could fix it? I have heard of people use different firmware versions; like my old phone, Ericsson K850i there was just plain K850 version (no 'i') that could get 3G I think.
But assume I install new Sony 2.3.3 Android on my X10, would be the key to get around at&t unnoticed ja?
I too have unlimite 50usd plan and tried to use on HTC Aria that was brand with at&t junk. That did not work But I have not try to root it (updated to 2.2 already ) so I not know if reflash would have fix it or not.

They asked me what kind of SIM I had and I told them I had a 3G SIM so he told me he would have to give me a new SIM for the LTE and he did. The SIM is orage with a globe on it, and the top half is white with a long number on it.
He did call and I physically heard him give her my phones IMEI number however something could have gotten ****ed up because they made me buy a 2nd SIM for my other line because I was "cross upgrading" by upgrading MY phone by using an upgrade that was on another line. However, he sounded like he knew his stuff and since I heard him give her the IMEI number I cant imagine how things got twisted up.
And yes it would be nice to be able to login to ATT or call tech support to check but there isnt a damn thing I can do when the website is down and its after tech support hours.

You may be right, but what i dont understand is the dude asked me if it was a 3G SIM and when I said it was he busted out a brand new one for me. My old one has 3G right on the front, the new one does not resemble it.
Also when I did a google image search I found a lot of LTE SIM cards that look exactly like the one I have. However I did see a couple that were all a solid orange like the one you described but there was info to suggest my card was the incorrect one.

If I select any of the LTE packages (specifically the one I wasnt LTE Smartphone unlimited personal add-on) I get this error:
Just call, I'm on the phone with another rep right now that seems to know what she's doing. Who knows, I might get lucky tonight. But yes, we definitely need the lte unlimited data package and she also said it comes with visual voicemail for free so ask for that too for the same price.

I thought it was funny. He's loving the phone so far! Does anyone else have this dev edition?
Semi-related: We're on AT&T and have a shared data plan, and tethering is allowed by AT&T. Is there a hidden hack he can do to enable it? The phone will not allow it right now, and AT&T can't help him out because they don't 'have' the phone.
Yep, same here - got mine at Build.
But I'm on Sprint so I can't just move my sim over.
It may live out it's life on just WiFi.
it's a slick phone, that'd be very sad to hear.
I was at build also. I spent 2 hours with AT&T techs yesterday, and could not successfully get internet sharing working.
I'm getting a feeling that the firmware on the build phone isnt final, and we may have to wait for a firmware udpate.
To get internet sharing to at least load without saying call at&t or that it wasn't supported, I had to configure a new apn named "broadband". None of the pre-configured apn settings work for tethering.
But once I did that, I can connect to the hotspot, but the phone does not want to route any data through it. So devices connect, but cannot connect to the internet. Its quite odd, and the AT&T techs were stumped.
It probably lacked AT&T's specific module for tethering. You may need to 'upgrade' to AT&T official ROM.
Broadband APN is tied to your account. When you are eligible to use tethering, it get enabled. So, I'd double check the account setting on AT&T side.
On Android phones, I know tethering is secretly routed through a hidden broadband APN built inside ROM's SQLite config database while normal phone connection is routed throuh ptr APN (for LTE). With a rooted Android phone, you can change the hidden APN back to ptr and get around the tethering account requirement.

All LTE phones require a SIM card. But for Sprint and Verizon, currently they run phone calls and SMS on CMDA side and data on LTE side. So the SIM card for Sprint and Verizon are in fact data only. Verizon is actively testing Voice over LTE and promised to deploy them in near future. When that happens, CDMA will no longer be used. Everything will be over LTE. But that is long way to go.
On the other hand, this phone actually works with T-mobile 3/4 G as well (it is penta-band unlike the AT&T retail version). So, you can as well get a prepaid account for T-mobile. There is no Sprint WP8 phone come out anytime soon.
Just out of curiosity, when you start the phone up, do you have a carrier splash screen?

I've got a Lumia 900 on the account, and tethering is enabled, and that works fine. if I'm not using the broadband APN, it actually tells me I have to call at&t or go to the AT&T web site (giving me the exact url) to add the service to my account. So I'm not sure why it actually doesn't work on the 920.
Hopefully someone will figure it out at some point.

No, it is a dev phone not specifically designed for AT&T. You can't even get cell data connection before you make a manual selection of APN for AT&T.

That is because your Lumia 900 is an AT&T branded phone. This one is not. And AT&T has special requirement/software for handling tethering. If I would make a guess, AT&T uses Broadband APN to test if you qualify for tethering but use ptr (for LTE) for actual data transmission once verification passed. You actually have to have a USB broadband stick on your account to use Broadband APN for data transferring.

I suspect that is true because when I first powered it up, it defaults to Canada region settings and time zones.
Anyway, I played with different manual APN settings. It seems that the phone firmware is hardcoded not to allow tether for both PTA APN (for LTE) and Phone APN (for HSPA+). Any other APN will be ok but my phone with my current account settings (unlimited data) won't let me use either AT&T 3G APN (wap.cingular) or anything else for internet connection. So the end result is the same.

That could explain why Roger model is pentaband :victory:.
For anyone wondering, my dad figured out the tethering. Oddly enough, he installed the Spanish keyboard and Internet sharing turned on. Weirdest thing ever but he claims it worked. You can change it back to English after. He found this on some forum post he said. Regardless, problem solved!

Thank you! Adding a keyboard (in my case, I added Spanish(Mexico) causes the phone to download an OTA update. After the update process finishes, the tethering works without changing APN. So, now I can freely tether my tablet to it on my unlimited data plan!

sadly, this didn't work for me on AT&T. I tried both Spanish updates, but still cannot tether.
There is a lot of attention regarding this Dev Kit due to the fact that is PentaBand.
Hopefully Microsoft and/or Nokia USA will make this model available, maybe over the Microsoft Stores?

Did your phone go through a few reboots to apply the update? Which APN is your phone configured to use? This Dev phone comes with 3 preconfigured APN for AT&T:
* AT&T LTE1
* AT&T LTE2
* AT&T 3G
Only AT&T LTE2 will fully function for this phone.

I seriously doubt it. They need carrier's approval to sell anyphone with carrier's LTE support. Take a look at Google's new Nexus 4 dev phone, it contains no LTE what so ever. The last gen Galaxy Nexus with LTE is a Verizon branded phone and can only be purchased via Verizon.
Installing either version of the spanish keyboard did not allow tethering. My APN settings just say "AT&T" . The difference is my phone was from AT&T so it probably has some other lock on tethering. More details on how this was done would be helpful unless it just isn't possible for me. I was already prepared for not having tethering with my unlimited plan anymore with my lumia 920 (came from android where custom roms allowed for tethering) so here's to hoping it is possible at some point.
This thread is about the special dev version ms gave out at BUILD2012 conference. Not the AT&T retail version.

How to Use a Verizon Global Ready Phone Abroad and Use Your Computer as a Virtual Router
So if you’re planning a trip to and want internet/cell service without paying Roaming fees to your U.S service provider here is what you need to know to have access to Facebook, Vonage, Google maps, email and other apps while abroad. I am using the experience i learned while i travel to Cancun Mexico this will work for other Countrys also with GSM networks please refer too the APN setting below.
I will cover two bases one for your Global ready/Unlocked phone and the other for a personal Hotspot in your room or wherever your laptop will be your U.S cell provider hotspot will not work with a foreign sim, so this is only If you plan to purchase or have semi-free WiFi service from the Hotel to share internet with other devices like tablets other computers etc.
First I will cover your Smartphone:
The phone I used and test this with was mostly on my Droid Razr Maxx from Motorola from the Verizon network. This can also worked with a IPhone 4S (You need to call Verizon First before traveling) please check out this thread to use your iPhone Unlocking IPhone for International Travel (I know this is a Droid forum but your travel companion may have a iPhone)
Note: you only have to do this once per-iPhone after that it is global ready as long as you own it.
For a Android phone they are Global ready phones no need to call Verizon it is already ready. Popular Android phones that are Global ready ie. Razr, Razr Maxx, plus both HD versions also, The Samsung GS3 and GS4 etc.. are Global ready.
For those who don't know, All Verizon 4G phones carry a sim card inside. They can be replaced with a non-U.S carrier sim. (Make sure you insert the sim in the right way or it will not work.) If you try to use a non Verizon sim in the U.S it will be blocked by The Verizon network.
Verizon runs off of both GSM and CDMA networks but while aboard you have a option to change these features.
By pressing the menu button click System Setting> More / Wireless & Networks>Mobile Networks>Network Mode.
Step 1.
Most important leave your phone in airplane mode once you reach your destination you can still use WiFi while your phone is in this mode. While in Mexico or any country aboard you will need a local sim from any carrier that is GSM. A prepaid sim works great, some/most companies will make you pay a fee for the sim and they will not provide any help with setting your phone up to their services.
Here are two reasons why. #1 You did not buy it from them. #2 they really don't know your Verizon, AT&T and T-mobile phone setup, Yes it is different than the same phones they sell on their own network. So buying a prepaid sim card is your best option then paying roaming fees to your U.S carrier.
After you have you sim you purchase the Data amount you think you will need you I got 1GB which was way more than enough for 5 days. I was consistently using my phone checking in on Foursquare etc.. You will also receive a local phone number too. I used a telcel sim card In Cancun The Telcel company is located in the Hotel Zone # 2 Blvd Kukulcan Km 12.5 77500 Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Telcel is the best for 4g and internet service.

Telcel: Excellent coverage, You'll have to present your passport. It took no time set up the data service. (You need to know their APN settings for data service I will cover this below. I used The Vonage app to Talk to friends and family in the U.S for free they were able to call and text me while using the Vonage app on their smart phone and toll free numbers work with Vonage but not with the Mexico number.(I will cover how to set up Vonage before your travel below). There are other cheaper company's but none with the same coverage as Telcel. It worked everywhere compared to the company below.
Movistar: The underdog. Cheaper per-month. It is what the other phone used. I wanted to test both networks. The rate to call the USA from Mexico was only 2 pesos per minute (15 cents) but there are other options to call the U.S for free as stated above. Coverage is not great at all, but it wasn't to terrible either. It was really spotty while on the beach unlike Telcel. Traveling out of Cancun on a excursions there was next to none cellular service at all. A lot of the small towns didn't have Movistar coverage. You will end up roaming on a different network it will roam on the Telcel network instead yeah that's right I said Telcel.
Prices
Everyone wants to use their Android phone or iPhone for checking emails, translating Spanish and occasionally consulting Google Maps while lost. It is easy to setup data on your phone once you have a SIM card and money on the account. If you don't explicitly buy data you can still use data on your device, but it will be taken out of your account balance at a very expensive rate. The best thing to do is to sign up for a package deal. Movistar is $200 pesos ($15) for 1GB which expires in 1 month. If your stay is not long Telcel offers the same 1GB data service for 10 days.
To sign up for one of these packages after you have added money to your Movistar account you send a text message to a special number and money is automatically taken from your account balance to pay for your data package. For example, to sign up for 1GB over 30 days, a $200 peso plan, you send a text message to 100 that says "30 dias". $200 pesos will be removed from your Movistar account and you'll have a gig of data to use.
Telcel works in a different way but you don't not need to text any special number (if your purchase from their main Store) after you add money to your account. it is automatically applied only when you use any OXXO convenience store to refill your mobile service then you will need to text a special number which will be provided . I prefer going to Telcel Company just in case of a language barrier.
Note: That all Telcel prepaid plans are currently referred to as "Amigo". Click Here for Telcel Rate Rates are in pesos not dollars
Your sim card is good and can be reused up to 1 year after money runs out or time expires.
Current Exchange rate $1 USD = 13.2408 pesos.
Step 2
Lets get your internet service running:
After you have your sim and paid for data you need add the APN setting to your phone. I did have to add the APN to my Razr Maxx for 4G/3G coverage, As Same for the iPhone 4S to acquire the 3G data service. Insert your Telcel sim go to the one of the link below, click your phone software link. Its free no need to pay a company which will take you minutes to do. If your phone is running any Android you click the android manual setup for iPhone the iPhone manual setup. Here is Telcel APN setting for Cancun, Mexico . Here is Movistar APN settings
Click Here for a link to chose the carrier you will be using if traveling to another country besides mexico
Note: If you have a fully unlocked Smartphone that is not locked to any specific carrier in the United States, Canada or any other country you may not have to enter the APN setting manually.
How to Call and Text to the U.S for free and Receive Calls and Text from the U.S while abroad at no Charge.
I have used Vonage for a while to me it’s the best. I have used on trips to Europe and it has always work without any problems.
When setting up Vonage you must do it before your trip abroad because it will ask for your current U.S number for authorization and activation this number will not change once you use a foreign sim since your account is linked to your U.S number not your carrier.
You can add money to your Vonage account if you are planning on calling land lines or a Smartphone without the Vonage app attached to that smartphone number. (I notice a few times I used Vonage from Mexico to call a mobile phone that did not have Vonage, I was able to call them for free, which was a bonus). You can Call, send SMS and MMS threw Vonage at no additional charge to any Smartphone with the Vonage app.
There are other apps out there that do work the same way as Vonage. Viber, Call and text any Viber user for free. Whatsapp a texting app only no calling is available (yet).
These apps will use the data service you have purchase while abroad or if you have Wi-Fi enable on your phone if Wi-Fi is available they will use the Wi-Fi Data instead of Cellular Data. Almost every Hotel in Cancun makes you pay for Wi-Fi. If you are at a hotel that offers free Wi-Fi you are in luck but the service may be spotty in some areas in your hotel.
How to turn your computer into a Virtual (Personal) Router.
Our hotel the Grand Oasis Cancun provided internet for only 36 hours and you could only use it on one device which comes to my next option as using your Laptop as a Personal Router to broadcast Wi-Fi to any devices near your computer. Our room was on the Second level of the Pyramid at Grand Oasis and I was able to access it while at the VIP lounge below our room, before our supposedly free internet service ended.
I attempted using the hotel next door since I was getting a good signal from the Omni Hotel. They offered complimentary 24hr internet access using your browser as a way to track your use. Once you find the signal of the Omni it will open your browser I used Google Chrome, after it opens you go through a few simple steps and your ready.
I learned that after the 24 hours are up all you have to do is disconnect from their network, just run Ccleaner (free program) then find the Signal of the hotel and you will be given another 24 hours. What Ccleaner (<--download there) does is clears anything attached to your browser ie cookies temp files etc. it cleans your browser history giving you a way of not paying for the hotel fee of internet and giving you free Wi-Fi. This is only if you are next to the Omni hotel.
What you need to download to turn your computer into a hotspot need to say is this little easy to use program Virtual Router. Once it has download test at your home to make sure it works with you devices. This will work with Tablets, Phones and other computers that can’t find the Omni Wi-Fi signal. You’re welcome. To use it, is simple. Open program>make a password>select Wi-Fi and start VR.
I will state this as a precaution to my own well being, you cannot hold me responsible for providing you this info and you screwing it up. If you are unaware of your phone operation system before changing the APN setting, do a little research and find out.
Don't try to change the APN setting or adding them while on Verizon network wait until you get your Telcel sim. Never delete anything that says Verizon or your carrier of choice name, you may have problems when you return home with service.
Know before you go,
This does not apply just to Mexico you will need to enter the APN manually for the network you want to use in any Country in the world always use GSM network its saves battery life and is faster.
Note to reader: The Hotspot for Verizon Wireless did not work it will look for Verizon servers. I will update this when I find a Hotspot for Telcel. I also know The Foxfi app did not work either even the paid version.
Thanks for reading!!
Enjoy your trip.
All of this info is from my research and my own experience everyone is entitled of their own opinions I just hope others enjoy my write up and knowledge
