USB Storage Damaged - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i was about to check something on the internet by using 3g data, but for some reason the 3g wasnt working, so i thought id refresh the phone by giving it a fresh reboot.
Upon doing so, after the phone fully rebooted, i got a notification in the notification bar 'Usb Storage Damaged' with sub-text 'Usb storage damaged. It may need reformatting'.
I have checked and i can access everything in CWM recovery, so therefore backing up the stuff i want/need shouldnt be a problem.
My question is, that is there a way to fix this WITHOUT reformatting?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Ideally copy off the data first so you have a backup then run chkdsk in Windows as it's FAT32.

Hi, I have a similar problem on my unrooted S2.. I have read that using chkdsk in Windows on an unrooted phone wont work (and didn't when I tried). I don't mind rooting, though I'm not sure if I could even do this while there is a USB storage error. I have hours of recorded lectures on my phone, and exams coming up soon so I am desperate not to reformat if possible!
I've been using my phone without USB storage for about 2 weeks now trying find a fix, and I guess this is my last hope, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your answer , But when I connect my phone to the PC and choose USB storage ,all I get is grayed out I and J drives.
how do I preform a CHKDSK? I tried running CHKDSK.exe but it doesn't seem to do anything (it says it's in read -only mode) .
EDIT:
I got it ,it's working again ,a couple of restarts and connecting \disconnecting to pc solved it.
as for CHKDSK.exe I copied it to the sd card and ran it from there.
thanks a lot

Hi,
I have a similar problem...
My SGSII battery ran out and when I started the phone after recharge, it started to give an error that the internal storage is damaged and also stopped to recognize the microSD card.
The microSD connected to the PC it is recognized and does not accuse error with chkdsk. I tried to format the MicroSD (on the phone) and then to mount it, but it does work.
Also, connecting the phone to PC in mass storage mode simply shows teh drive letters, I can't access the drives.
I did not want to format the internal storage before be able to copy my data, and I think the problems are related.
I managed to mount and access the internal storage using the terminal emulator (running on the phone) using the command
mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p11 /sdcard/
But the rest of the system does not recognize even after this procedure, and I don't know the command to do the same with the MicroSD; or copying data to a PC to then try to wipe or factory reset.
I've tried to reinstall the ROM with ODIN and did not solved the problem.
Also tried to install CWM recovery, but it can not mount / sdcard (gives error).
Could anyone help me?
Thank you!

[Q] Help with SD Card

I would appreciate some assistance with the issue I am facing as I am new to Android. I have attempted to use my micoSD card (32GB Kingston) from my HD2 and as it was detected, I figured out I may have to mount it and so I did. However, Galaxy S II report it as corrupted and requires it to be deleted/formatted. Because I had a lot of data on it, I did not want to format it. Now, the card cannot even be read on my PC.
Can someone please advise how to proceed to restore my data?
Thank you for any suggestion/help/tips!
Connect it to a windows pc outside of the phone, and then scan it.

Missing data try Recuva to recover data .
jje
Thanks for the suggestions; I will try...
None of the above worked, because the card appears damaged and there is no access to it as a external drive. I also tried Zero Assumption Recovery, to no avail!
I will continue to try, but if anyone knows of a solution, I would appreciate their input.
Thanks
Like i said, you must connect it to windows with the card not in the phone.

Find the manufacturers website and see if they have a repair app for it. I have had to do this with a flash drive before, their may be something simular for your microSD card.
Was you sd card partitioned by chance?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Try plugging it into a linux box.
I found that somtimes linux would read what windows thought was a 'corrupted' drive.
Thanks all for your input, but still no solution!
harolds,
I have checked the Kingston's Website and there is not tool, only basic FAQ! I remmeber I had an SD card from Transcender and got corrupted and there was a tool from their site. In this case, I cannot locate a tool!
intruda119,
I do not believe it was partitioned, as I only mounted it using Android tool. I am unsure whtehr the mounting process also pations it or not.
SuperTheMando,
Unfortunately, I am not conversant with Linux, so I would not know how to proceed even if I build a system based on this OS.
Please if you have any suggestion, please share it!
If nothing else works, and you really want to give linux a go, then you could try a live CD or a live USB.
That means booting your computer off a CD or USB instead of your hard drive.
It really is a lot simpler than you'd think.
I don't know how computer savvy you are, but if this doesn't make sense, then some Googling around will give you a simpler explanation.
Just go to the Ubuntu website and choose an appropriate version (I recommend the Long Term Support version, it will have the least bugs in it and most likely to work fine on your computer and with the SD card) and download it.
In the download steps, they'll give you links and how to's to make a bootable USB or CD.
If your computer is relatively new, then it should be able to work of a USB, but if you aren't sure, then just go with CD (it will work with all computers with a CD drive)
Just prepare the Live CD, put it in, turn on your computer, and tell it to boot to the CD. (go into the BIOS (hit delete (usually) while it's turning on) and set it to boot from the CD before the HDD).
It sounds scary if you've never done anything like that before, but honestly, you won't screw up your computer. Before you do anything permanent to your computer you will be told at least three times 'WARNING THIS WILL ERASE ALL DATA!' or something along those lines.
You probably have a computer savvy friend who can do this all for you, or maybe an IT department at work who will be glad to help you.

[Q] Internal storage formatting itself after reboot?

Every now and again when I reboot the phone, my Internal Storage seems to be formatted. It's really starting to become a nuisance. I am on rooted on U4_2.1.1 - anyone else experiencing this issue?
Self bump...I found that if I reboot the phone in adb (using the reboot command) it formats my internal storage almost every time. I'm trying to isolate other causes while I am at it...
Bump, I also have this issue and it is extremely frustrating!!!
This happened to me when I rooted mine yesterday too, and this is my first post yay.
Adam
Hi,
Do a full format in Windows. Connect the phone in use storage mode to a pc, right click on the drive and select format, default settings, turn off quick format.
This happens when running Gingerbreak to root your phone.
Cheers!
So I backed up everything and am now formatting it but did I do something wrong wail using gingerbreak because I saw no where this could happen, just want to know what I did wrong.
Adam
hi,
This is what I am guessing happens: In order to get root, Gingerbreak hacks into the volume daemon (the android bit that knows about inserting and removing sdcards). So you get root but it's like you pulled the plug on your computer while your hard drive was accessing data, you need to do a full format to avoid glitches. At boot android checks volumes to make sure they are not corrupt, that they are 'checked' that they are fully synced and closed out before the power was turned off. If there are any problems, either a repair is attempted or a format is done, depending on the phone/firmware. So, after using Gingerbreak to root, there are some issues with the format of the internal memory, once you start filling it up, you get errors when it runs across a bad patch of the format. So, even though it may look like the drive has been formatted and empty, you still need to do a full format from a pc to clean up the mess. I would recommend both the internal memory and any external sd-cards be formatted properly afterward.
You'd need to talk to the author(s) of Gingerbreak to get more of a breakdown on what happens.
Cheers!
Atrix internal storage format after boot
I've the same problem using Atrix when reboot...
The internal storage will format after every reboot...
And my Atrix is new phone, that not root before...
I've try to format storage within phone format tool.
It success to stop the format after reboot.
But, I when put the sdcard into the phone, the reboot will format the phone, again...
Anyone can help////
wow thanks for the break down man really appreciate it.

Do you have it set to Mass Storage under USB Settings when you have it connected?
Do you have the proper drivers installed?
I had this problem too. But even trying full format using pc, it still wouldn't help. I even did a full wipe on my whole phone.

UMS on Android 4.3 gives "Please insert disk into removable disk"

Hello,
When I updated my S3 to 4.3 from 4.1.2, it was terrible. It was very laggy, my screen didn't show when pressing the Power Button or the Home Button, and I thought that resetting to factory might fix it. Well, I was so desperate to make my phone work better that I didn't realize that all my files were on the internal storage, I don't have an SD Card. So, I've lost everything.
Now, I'm trying to recover some photos, but I can't connect my phone as USB mass storage to use a recovery soft on Windows 8. I rooted my phone, installed USB Mass Storage Enabler app, but it shows two drives (H: and I, but I can't access those. It gives me "Please insert a disk into Removable Drive (LETTER"
Please help, I did everything I found on forums, but still nothing. Those files might be lost, but now I have another battle.. Making my phone available in Mass Storage.
And by the way, it still works terrible with 4.3. Hate it so much!
Have you installed USB drivers ???
Have you read the stickied storage/ recovery thread ??

Unfortunately I think USB Mass Storage in the way it is implemented in 4.x for the moment can only share the external SD, the internal one is never visible.
IMHO the only approach to recover "something" is to get an external microSD larger than the internal partition and create a block copy (with dd under adb in CWM/Philz recovery for instance) of the entire "internal SD" partition - that one will be an EXT4 (Linux) partition) and there is a very, very small chance that you might recover some stuff from it (I doubt but who knows).
Yes, i have the Samsung USB Driver for mobile phone (1.5.29.0)
No, didn't read the storage/recovery thread.
Oh well...
Such error happens if transfer breaks unexpectedly. Think what file did you send lastly and delete it, it should fix your issue.
If you can't remember or it did not, formatting your external sd card will fix it for sure.

Ah, you're talking about internal one.
Well, then your magic program doesn't work properly. Perhaps you could try boeffla kernel and it's UMS.

[Q] Help! No ROM, USB not recognised!!

Hi all,
First off, get the laughs out the way. Not posted on here before but used the forum a lot over the past year or so and i desperatley need someones help.
Long story short.
1) Currently i can only access CMR 6.0.3.2
2) I have no ROM available on int SD due to doing a system wipe while flashing Cyanogenmod 11 nightly which failed due to Status 7 error ( did not think this error would happen!)
3) My PC & Laptop will not recognise the S3 through USB despite all correct drivers being correct.
4) CMR will not let me mount the 8GB ext SD card. I have tried formatted to NTSC and Fat 32 and both not mounting, get the mount error message.
To sum it up, im fooked. I cannot access the int SD to drop a ROM on it and cannot access the Ext SD card through recovery which DOES have a ROM on it.
Do any ofyou fantastic people have any idea what i can do apart from dress it up nicely and make an ornament out of it?
Thanks!

Yes Scott. Do not make an ornament out of it!
Okay, serious .. download the ROM of your region from sammobile.com. Install Odin on your laptop. Boot your S3 in download mode. Flash the firmware from sammobile.com on your phone using Odin.

Hi Hamza,
Thanks for the reply. This is one of the problems noted above as that my laptop and PC will not recognise my S3 via USB. Tried different USB wires and installed various versions of the drivers, uninstalled, reinstalled etc It just will not connect be recognised.
Any other thoughts?

Sorry, I thought that your phone will get recognized when in Odin mode or download mode. I am afraid I am out of tricks for now, but let me search and get back to you in case I find anything
Hello Scott,
Can you enter in Download mode on phone?
"First shut down your device, then power on by simultaneously pressing the power button, home button and volume down key. Now you will see download mode and you will be asked if you want to cancel or continue. Press volume up to continue or volume down to cancel and reboot."
For that part you don't need connection to PC (yet).
If u succeed entering in download mode, then use the link that Hamza posted, to restore your device through Odin
HI!
Its no problem to get in to download mode but as the laptop and PC will not recognise my S3, neither does Odin.
The very 1st think i knew to do was to try and flash a stock ROM via Odin, but sadly can't
I've flashed ROM's a lot however it was a rookie mistake not to make a backup on this occasion that was accessable in this situation. My backups and ROMs are on the Ext SD card....
Ive searched and the only 2 outcomes i can see to resolve are to mount my Ext SD card, which i can't do on CMR or to make the handset visible o use Odin or to drop a ROM on the Int SD but again, can't.

We have 5 or 6 USB cables for our phones around here, and only 3 work for our S3 phones. Worth a try?
One more thing crossed my mind... In CWR, did you try "mount usb storage"? Under "mounts and storage" setting.

Tried various USB cables and nada. Due to this Odin, Kies or anything will else will not recognise the handset and that's on a PC and a Laptop.
As for the Mass Storage in recovery, the version of CMR doesn't have that option otherwise i would have tried!
I was focusing more on trying to mount the Ext SD card on CMR. Is there any suggestions on this? Tried NTFS and Fat 32 with varying cluster sizes but not happening. Any other suggestions?

Fat32 should work, not sure about NTFS... Did u tried another card? Or removing battery and reinserting after SD card format?
Thanks for all the suggestions.... Had a family emergency.
Tried everything, i now think that there is a hardware issue with the phone as its a Code 43 error whenever i try to update the driver so the handset can talk to my PC. Seen as this option looks fooked i can only now and try to figure why the Ext SD wont mount on CMR and how to resolve it.
If i can;t then no option but to send it to the big warehouse in the Sky,
Just to exclude, did you tried another SD card?

Hey,
if i connect my phone with my PC, i can normaly see all files,...
But if i want to copy a file from my computer to my phone (internal or external sdcard) its stock at 0%. (in system and twrp)

I tried to reinstall the right usb drivers, tried sideload and adb push but.
i googled the problem, but i cant find something like this.
sideload says something with "cant read comand"
and push says its done (800mb file after 10sec :/ ) but there is nothing on the device.
I dont know what the problem is. the phone is from 2012 but EVERYTHING else is working fine.
