Uk SG2 Firmware - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
Im wondering whether something is up. I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 which i updated last week. It updated the firmware (this is the Android Version right? to 2.3.4. I have seen however that there is a 2.3.5 out currently.
Im from England and was wondering if this was actually the latest firmware out for my device?

chances are your 2.3.4 is the latest especially if your phone is carrier branded as they will want to test and add there own bloatware to the rom before release which generally slows release down

Mine is uk generic handset sim free etc xwki4 2.3.4 is the latest kies update. Seems these phones are the last to recieve updates

Hi, I have an Orange SG2 and it is running 2.3.5 the update being received via kies several Weeks ago...
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App

Slightly off the topic, I was wondering if there is an insecure kernel for the 2.3.5 firmware? I rooted, and i'm running the nearest I can find (XWKJ1). I wouldn't be bothered, but ever since rooting and using the clockwork mod to backup my stuff, my screen has become a little less contrasty, and brighter, makes the sceen quality look a tad off.
I know I can run the secure kernel, but it would end up that I can't use clockwork mod.
I will be installing a custom rom soon anyway, but i've only had the phone a few months, so the stock rom is still okay-ish for me now.
Anyone shed any light?

Pulse Android21.zip

So....a minute ago I look at my phone and it's automatically downloading the file listed in the title from T-Mobile UK.
Anyone know anything about this? Side note, I'm in Canada with a rooted phone on Rogers.
Sent from my X10a using Tapatalk
what do you mean from T-Mobile UK? did you buy an X10i from them and are using it on Rogers network or are you using a debranded (to T-Mobile UK firmware) and rooted X10a bought from Rogers?
Any chance of posting this mystery file??
*also should probably posted in General not Android Dev
The phone is an x10a from Rogers that was debranded and rooted.
The place it was downloading the file from was uk.tmobile.com or some variation of that.
The file is around 75 megs so can't post it from the phone. Will definitely post it when I get home later.
Sent from my X10a using Tapatalk
unfortunately i think your phone has downloaded and update for another phone google t-mobile pulse
I think so as well. Question is, why? Lol
Sent from my X10a using Tapatalk
whoa...really bizzare. Thanks for the update nonetheless.
I was debating about debranding to UK T-Mo just in case that was a 2.1 update, you never know with all the Sony Style hype and AT&T launch today, I have a hard time understanding how SE could be so incompetent to launch the X10 in the US at this stage with 1.6 but looks like that's gonna happen in a couple hours.
So it finished? What is inside? is It android 2.1 update we are waiting for?
OMG!! I have turned into one of those!!!!
Sent from my X10i using XDA App
no its an update for a t-mobile branded phone called the pulse hence pulse android 2.1 update /thread
LOL yeah. it was mentioned in the thread.. I just thought to "stick my tounge out" for no reason..
I just find it funny. My phone is not branded, I'm not with t-mobile, nor do I have a Pulse. Not only did it grab the update, it did it automatically. That's not cool.
Sent from my X10a using Tapatalk
What is exactly the update for?
Good question. How would I find out?
Sent from my X10a using Tapatalk
Is there any different in baseband, or your FW ver?
did the update install?
what's your rom version?
It was a zip file. Nothing installed.
Phone info:
Model number: X10a
Firmware version: 1.6
Baseband version: 1.1.27
Kernel version: 2.6.29-rel [email protected] #2
Build number: R2BA023
Nothing installed so it's all normal/the same as it's been. It was just a zip file that I noticed downloading in my notification bar when I turned my screen on. It said it was downloading from the UK T-Mobile site. Other than that, I have no clue about the file itself. I'll look into posting the file tonight for anyone who wants to have a peek at it

Why on earth do you people keep on making threads with "android 2.1" titles? You'll get your answers/attention with titles that don't cause a heart attack for people like me who actually wait for some real news.

If you felt "Pulse Android21.zip" meant we had 2.1, there's not much I can do for you since nowhere in the title does it state "Android 2.1 on my x10!!!!!!!!!!!!".
Why on earth do "you people" keep thinking every discussion of 2.1 automatically means "WHEN DO WE GET IT?!!"

Weird in which way they have released it .... Re forum 2.3.4 don't you have to root to get it ? instead of kieselguhr ? And if you do update how do you stand with warranty ?
No stock Samsung rom is a flash via Odin nothing to do with root ,

Not much of a change with 2.3.4 people have been flashing the non official 2.3.4 firmware via Odin for almost a month now.
And the way things are going samsung may not include gtalk video otherwise I dont see much differnece between the two.
If you are itchy to get it you can always flash the unofficial ones .. INTRATECH has got quite of them non wipe if you do wish.
I thought it would bring changes:< better battery life and more speed plus less bugs (don't know why I need more speed s2 is Mega fast anyway) .... has android run out of ideas? I don't know if 3d is a gimick but I might have to go this way only thing which puts me off is just experience with the sensation it was awful hence me getting s2
I am frightened of bricking my phone hence why I don't like the idea of non official....

with 2.3.4 roms i couldnt tell if it was faster at all
but the KF3 rom(2.3.3) had more battery life than the KG rom (2.3.4)
dont be scared of bricking
after rooting ur phone once and getting CWM
ull almost never need to use Odin again
just use your own phone to flash new roms
but if you want to stay legit just update using Kies
Not seeing a FOTA update to 2.3.4 on my sensation.
kg5 was officially released at least two weeks ago in Poland and is available by kies, so what is the problem again?

Well for starters it is official Samsung firmware not something cooked up .
Two its almost impossible to brick SGS2 ( almost )
Three the method to update to stock is relatively simple and phone still covered under Samsungs warranty .
Four you wait not for Samsung to release the firmware upgrade but the phone provider to accept that update and upload or not to Kies as the official update method .
Five XDA Developers forum is a bit useless if its all Kies updates .

Oh apparently HTC has released it in some regions this morning.... So this automatically means Samsung should release it too because all firmware updates should be synchronous. I don't see the reasoning behind your post, maybe you would care to explain.
I was asking cos HTC are the worst for updating firmware and they are quick with 2.3.4 I hate some of the attitudes on this forum I asked a simple question and am glad there are some polite people out there
Thank you to the polite people who responded.....
I shall wait to see when Samsung release in the uk.... i don't want to jump ship from s2 to evidence 3d so hopefully Samsung won't let us down
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Well i think HTC release of updates are more worldwide and all almost together. Samsung is like different times for different countries and if you have branded one is even more difficult to have an update quickly.
I'm glad I'm unbranded it's strange how they release em seem to go from one side of the world then back to one European country then to the tother. Will wait for the uk to get it

[Q] Anyone got 2.3.4 update from kies?

Hi, i got the 2.3.4 update from kies about two weeks ago but i was wondering if anyone has seen any difference since i dont see any, its suppose that my talk should have
Video support yet i dont have i did get a new market but not with the firmware update.
Anyone has had the same experience

Your band version should be KG5 then only you can do voice and video chat..mine is kg5 and its working fine with me..
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Yep my baseband version is KG4 so i guess thats why i dont have video support for talk, but is there a way to know what changes came with this formware update? Battery life seems the same, maybe a bit better but i switched to more minimalistoc look so i run less stuff.
Also the baseband version i suppose one day i'll get an update right?

[Q] Why hasnt UK gotten the 2.3.6 update?

Why hasnt UK gotten the 2.3.6 update officially for SGS2? UK got the 2.3.5 update but the unlocked sim-free handsets only got the 2.3.4 update. I have the SGS2 on 3 and didnt get 2.3.6, i had to flash it myself. And will we get an ICS update for UK fast?
Samsung are only on test rom ICE so far .
2.3.6 update may depend upon your carrier and in your case you have to ask 3 .

The whole point of a DROID is customization ditch stock rom's and install CM7 you will never look back and if anything happens to your phone just reflash it with the stock rom. KIES is horrible.
True
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
It will be the same answer Samsung produce the firmware its then passed to 3 they decide to accept the firmware or not and modify it or not then post to the Kies server .
If stock 2.3.6 has been released for UK then 3 have it .

I have to say I feel the same I use to change my roms on my desire all the time but never felt the need too on the s2? and today one of the girls in work updates her S2 to 2.3.5 voda branded and my none branded is stuck with 2.3.4, what is that all about??? I benched the 2 side by side today fresh reboot and the voda scored 3600+ on quad and mine only 3200+ not happy with that and TBH I have nothing at all installed on mine!!
HTC never let branded phones get firmware first or is this a play from the carriers now paying to get updates first hmm I wonder.
I did have a look at upgrading to that 2.3.6 rom via odin but still not sure about doing it.
I would just like them all to just get the updates out and stop messing, that is what Android is all about. Just let us do the messing with the phones.

This must be pick on me day then??? I was only telling you what I tried and I know that the benchmark rubbish means nothing but as I said a branded Vodafone showing better results than an unbranded s2, I was a little shocked that's all and I have to say that the voda 2.3.5 did feel very fast and smooth to my stock 2.3.4 that clunks now and again??
Also I would be happy to root and run a custom rom on my s2 I have messed around with phones for years going back to the old Nokia 6600 days and a few before that, also my HTC desire that was changed almost daily, but I feel that the S2 is a solid phone as standard (IMO)

I'm quite new to android & smart phones...and before starting to read these boards around a week ago i assumed that the SGS2 was 1 version only all around the globe, exactly the same inside and software... I was a lil surprised to find out that that there's many diff versions, kernals & firmware etc.
Why do they do this ? isn't this just a massive hassle for Samsung etc with all the diff updates they have to work on, test & put out ?
Seems more like "not so smart phones" to me.

[Q] Second-hand Bell i9100m to stock

A friend of a friend was giving us a lift today, and she asked if we could turn on navigation on her phone since she was in the middle of driving. Her phone is a Galaxy S II, definitely i9100 and not the other variants (4.3" not 4.5", physical home button). She was running it on Telus but she bought it second-hand a few weeks ago so I assume it was a Bell or Virgin model.
Anyway I could see from afar that it was most definitely still running Gingerbread, and I wondered why it hadn't gotten the ICS update. I asked if I could see the phone and I went to the About screen - it's running 2.3.6, and the build number says Super ROM. Then I looked in her app drawer and saw Superuser. She is not the type who knows how to root a phone or would even want to, so the likely explanation is that the seller had installed a custom ROM and neglected to revert it before sale.
I've never owned an i9100... If she were to ask for help returning it to stock, would the simplest way just be to flash the Bell ICS ROM using Odin? Are there any precautions I'd need to take in case something the last owner had installed would be incompatible with the flash?

To be clear, she is a non power user. The ideal ROM for her is whatever would've been on there by now if it had never been hacked. So I believe that'd be ICS.

and i assume you know where too get that and yes flash in odin the stock version either from here you can get it or samfilmware ics version for 19100m
cheers
Thanks!
Actually I should add... The SuperROM she had on there said the device was i9100G. Is it possible that's just because it's what it says in the ROM, and it's still really an i9100m? Cause now I see they have different processors...

Hey. You better first make sure that the Galaxy S unlock tool isn't there, otherwise that's how the seller sim-unlocked the phone. Putting it on ics may lock it back up but you can unlock it again. If you move it to jellybean though, the unlock tool doesn't work yet. Ics is good enough for her.

Hey I'm also looking to update my phone and I'm sort of in the same situation as this girl. I bought my phone second hand and found out later that it was rooted and has CyanogenMod 7.1 on it. My model is the I9100 and my provider is Telus. I was looking to update it to CM10, but one of my concerns is that it might get locked again and I won't be able to use my phone on Telus. Should I just settle for CM9? Will it for sure get locked again? I'm a noob.

Presumably if it's genuinely an i9100G and not m (I'm not sure, as I only saw the phone once), it wasn't from a Canadian carrier. In which case who knows how it was unlocked.
