Security App - Best, Necessary? - HTC Rezound

I heard about Lookout for checking CIQ on phone and saw that they have a security app. Also saw something by NetQin. I used to use BitDefender on my pc but then it got buggy.
My first smartphone and I'm paranoid. So do most people use a security/anti-virus app on their phone? If so, which do you suggest?

I've had more than my fair share of smart phones. This is my 4th one this year. As for me, I've never used a virus scanner on my phone or any of my computers. I'm just smart and make sure I don't download things I don't know what they are.

I've been using the free version of Lookout for about 3 years through an OG Droid, Droid 2, Droid X2, and now my Rezound. I've never had any issues with it. It seems to work the way it's supposed to.

Not really necessary. But it's up to you really, personal preference in this matter.

Yeah, I have read that Android doesn't propagate viruses, but seems like there would still be a chance of getting malware or spyware.
Also, does anyone worry about intrusions via bluetooth or something from another person even without using a trojan? I used to read about that ability years ago, where someone could go through your files and grab what they wanted via bluetooth. Is there a way for anyone to do that with our phones?

Heavily researched this the other day. Not sure if you're worried more about the malware side of life, or the potential of theft - but if you're looking to ID a perp for trying to gank your phone, nothing comes close to the feature set in Cerberus.

Android Police review: http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...s-a-clear-winner-in-keeping-your-device-safe/
Hadn't even heard of it before last week, but after 10 minutes of messing w/ it, I was sold. Better than anything else in the market by far in terms of what it does & I can confirm everything is working on my Rezound. Also, it's only $3 and change. Can't beat that
Also, for reference, I previously used Prey, but I like this much better.

Hm... how does it do that, in layman's terms?
I'm paranoid a bit since our phones are now pretty much like laptops. I have my laptop on lockdown though and this is my first smartphone so I want to be sure I'm not leaving a security hole open for some nefarious character to take advantage of.

Well, I know I already mentioned Lookout, but I'm going to mention them again. These guys seem to know what they're doing. I mean, as this article states, Google trusts them enough to tell them what to remove from the market, so I would assume that they're pretty legit. Again, I've never had an issue with anything, and I've been running Lookout for a while.

The new avast!, which bought and incorporated Theft Aware, seems like the best option on the market to me....It's what I use.

anti-virus worth it?

Sorry to post a new thread about this but I was searching the atrix forums and could not find anything on it. Any thoughts on anti virus apps such as lookout security a necessity? Thanks.

I don't think it's worth it. I've only heard of really weak Android "viruses". I hardly see the point of antivirus for Android. As long as you stay on the Market and don't download anything that seems extremely weird I think you're ok.

seems like all it would do is slow your phone down and/or decrease battery life
although i should say I don't even have antivirus on my pc
I have Lookout and just have it running in the background and doing weekly scans and backups. You don't have to see it, and it doesn't even eat battery power.
For me, better to have it than not. Just in case.
Not worth it if your a flashaholic

I was at the Android BBQ Cyanogen panel and someone asked this. Straight from the Master's mouth, unless you are going crazy downloading unknown sources from China you do not need it, it's ineffective.

Honestly, I think this is a bs statement for anyone to make. Any time you connect any device to a computer you risk a virus migrating/transferring/infecting that device. Any time you download anything from the internet, no matter the source, you risk a virus. Just because it came from the Market does not mean it's clean. Similarily, just because you flash a new ROM doesn't mean any virus you had will be gone. Wiping is no guarantee unless you completely wipe everything, which nobody does.
Many years ago people did not care about, or even know about, anti-virus on their home computers.......yup, big mistake! System crashes, personal information lost, important files lost/corrupted, remote management, identity theft, etc.
There is nothing wrong with employing anti-virus on your cellphone. It's an internet/wireless/network connected device, and should be treated just like any other such device.
Personally I use Lookout Premium. I have found it works well for me, and uses next to no resources. I can't speculate on other anti-virus for phones such as AVG as I haven't used them. The best offence is a good defence.

Yup Caleant is right. As a matter of fact they just recently(maybe a few months back) took down like 20 or more apps from the regular android market and some were quite popular too for being infected. I believe they were all infected with the dream virus or something like that. So that other statement that guy said about how you only need it if your installing from unknown sources or apps from china is complete BS!

And then the same as any Linux kernel it will be succeptible to rootkits and various other security issues - how often is the Android kernel patched? (go have a look over at exploit-db...)...also there is java on top of that Linux kernel...therefore....
Another vote for using it here - I am running Bit Defender - its uses little to no resources and no battery and it is definitely better to be safe than make assumptions
+1 for Lookout, it actually has alerted me of malicious software and aborted the installation once before. Here is a good and recent example of just how easy it is for malicious apps to be downloaded from even the Android Market.
I did not use antivirus for my other phones as they either had very slow processor (backflip) or very little ram (x10) and they did slow the phone down. However, with the atrix, I do have a antivirus (lookout) and find it useful. I mean, come on, what do you lose? Also, i tried avg once, it flagged superuser as an unsafe app and told me usb debugging is a unsafe option. It was SO annoying i uninstalled it.
Its good but personally I don't use it.All my files go to my pc get scanned and then put to my phone.I backup almost everyday for good measure and I constantly switch between ROMs for fun so for me its not really a big deal, but for others it might be very important
I use kaspersky mobile security and wouldn't feel comfortable just installing apk's without some form of check.

That's what I thought too when I read his post. Just smile and nod lol.
Virus and CM7
I'm running CM7 on my Atrix. All was going very well until recently when it stopped recognizing the car dock. I am not running an antivirus yet (which will change given the above posts, regardless of the answer to this question.
Could a virus have been the culprit?
No sir, I seriously doubt that.

my androids last chance

Hi. I've been struggeling with the s2 ever since I got it, almost all apps FC, Bluetooth randomly turns off as does my phone, GPS never knows where I am, I get adds in my notification bar, my Widgets don't work, time is almost always wrong and my speed test never gets above 1mb down. These problems occur out of the box on 2 different phones and with S8.
I see people enjoying their android phones but I'm confused how. Do I need to be a pro hacker to even make this device work the way it should? What can I do to fix this? I'm so frustrated I'm ready to not have a phone just so I can destroy this on with my hands. I paid 199 for this phone, don't even feel it's with $10, maybe it is but android sure isn't.
same problems on 2 different phones? I'm betting its user error... maybe you can install s8 but not restore any old data... start fresh... have you tried that? are you using titanium backup?

go get an iphone or winmo if android isn't worth your time.
If you have Ads in your notification bar, you have something installed that's causing this. This is not the fault of android or your phone. You installed something which causes ads to appear and might even be causing all your other issues. Wipe it out, DONT install anything and test it out. Make sure it works the way it should without touching it.
Dont blame the phone or the Android OS for something that you did. As for the slow download speeds, after you wipe it out, run the speakeasy speedtest through your browser not the speedtest app. That app is not 100% accurate. If the speed is still slow, call AT&T because it might be an issue with the network in your area.

ROFL!! Although I agree with you, the post you are referring to was unnecessary.
I actually just switched from iOS to android myself, and considering I used to develop on iOS it was a pretty intense switch... I struggled mainly with the battery life of my phone. Notifications also caused a bit of a headache due to just how different they are.
Moral of the story, I stuck with it and actually like android more now. Given it's not as idiot proof as iOS was, but the things you can do in android (in terms of being able to do anything you want with your data and not having itunes) make it worth it.
Try flashing and rooting your phone, then remove all the apps you don't use. That fixed most of my battery problems for me, and the unnamed rom fixed the rest.

DK - Standard troubleshooting steps... Use the phone STOCK without ROOT and without any new apps for a few hours (at the very least)...
IF the phone still gives you these errors STOCK you can complain to AT&T about your issues because it is clearly the phone (HARDWARE) as ROOT cause of these issue.
HOWEVER...
If you're experiencing these issues either:
After restoring from previous backup
ROOTing the phone
Downloading apps from outside of Android Market
Then this is clearly a software issue.
I've been using my SGS2 for over 30 days STOCK non rooting and I've run into ZERO issues.
Please report BACK after you take the SGS2 to STOCK with no 3rd party apps installed...

Factory reset and go back to stock, if you are still having issues then return it for a new device. I have not had a single force close, wifi issue, bluetooth droppage, nor widge malfuntion. If you are installing other roms it sounds like you are not following instructions. you could be also installing applications/widgets that have not been updated in awhile to support SGSII? Feel sorry for you having so many issues, but take it back for another and complain. Maybe they will upgrade you to a skyrocket or something else if that will make you happy?
No complaints on my SGS II other than it can't cook me dinner or replace my nagging spouse.
Why not list the apps you installed, or as other suggested bring it back to bone stock and do a factory reset.
Quick heads up here guys.. Everyone needs to straighten up and fly right.

Didn't Divine_Madcat just tell everyone this morning to NOT REPLY to him if you think he's trolling? Geez...
Allow me to explain things as straight forward as possible. Please note I am not going to attack nor will I insult you.. I am spelling out facts.
Android Market does not allow malware.. There are 3 types of applications. 1) Free Application offered for no cost, 2) Ad-enabled application free to the user but you have to deal with ads gets money to the developer, 3) Paid for application. You pay for it
Now with that said.. Lets look at what your installing, If you can list out all the applications on your phone this is done by
Go to Market
Click Menu
Click My Apps
Type in all the application names there in here.
That will better help us diagnose your problem. Without that we really can not help you as a novice user you may mistake "out of the box" with nothing done when you have downloaded 10 applications. That is not for me to say but for you to show us.
Next when your asking for help please make sure to be terse and to the point with your problems, adding in extra frustration for it only makes you seem "troll" like. I could see how the other user seen you as if you where promoting IPhone and bashing Android.. Make sure to keep your personal impressions to a minimum and that will help you out here.
And remember, 99% of all problems you will incur as a user with force close are usually the users fault. Now if your a developer.. Well yea.. You will be crashing a phone alot.
So get us that list and lets see if we can't make your phone experience as good as ours is..

dont think my POS Samsung Moment was that bad
Best bet is to go back to bone stock and run it for a while. If you have the same issues then it could most likely be your device.
What rom are you running? IMO cybiks cm7 and jokers 1.3 is the best combo. I have never had a random reboot once I got my undervolting levels tweaked right. It ran perfectly fine at the default voltages and I wanted to extend my battery life a bit.
You could also have a app that is going awry causing your device to overheat and seize.
Sent from my MoPho. All typos are the phones fault.
Yeah man, you are really screwing up somewhere. Everyone I have ever met in person with a Photon raves about how awesome it is.
I actually talked to a guy in line at the store the other day who had one - I noticed our oddly shaped device in a otter box on his hip and asked if it was Electrify or Photon (We Tennesseans tend to randomly chat with total strangers, like they are old pals.) - it was a Photon, he loved it.
I told him, if he wanted to love it more, read about Rooting and Roms. I wonder how that turned out for him.
I'm running pure stock and rooted. I rave about my Photon when it works right, trust me, it's awesome... Maybe my apps conflict with this device??? Cuz I never had any issues like this on my Droid X... I'm a huge Motorola fan, I don't want to leave you guys!!! Maybe I'll switch to a new device, but I will still be around, no matter what...
As for the Galaxy Nexus, other than LTE, and NFC, and ICS, the Photon beats it right out of the water!!!
I don't know if this is pure bad luck.... My apps nust conflict with the device.... I was running great with no issues until I installed avast! security... and for what avast! does, I'll take the repercussion of random reboots, if that is even the app causing random reboots....

Again, I'm putting the phone back to Sprint Stock with a handful of my most common and trusted app's (BofA, Credit Union, MSNBC, Pandora and a few games) It's likely some s**t I put on it so I blame myself, not the phone.
Like I said, at the end of the day, its a phone. I could not call my boss for something the other day. It was freezing, then it went into bootstrap recovery.....by the time I removed OtterBox and battery, I was pissed (Matter fact, now I remember, It was 4:15AM Saturday!!!! I got pisssed because I had to get up off my a** and come in here!!)

But, I have posted about 3 or 4 threads ranting about how this phone doesn't work sometimes.... I'm waiting for an LTE device that has 1080p, WiMax, and the specs our Photon with Tegra 3...
I don't know what to do anymore.... I must be doing something wrong...

Wipe your phone clean and install each app one by one to test...but it's stupid that you've gone through that many photons..Besides, what do you need security for anyway? You're not installing random crap are you?

Antivirus on android is pointless unless you use a pirated apps/market. The "sky is falling" articles about infection rates on android devices never give you actual numbers just "Up 427 Percent" Tom's Guide. If the original infection rate is 500 devices worldwide, even with a 400% increase you still have a greater chance of getting struck by lightning.
There are a couple of locate/remote wipe apps available on the market that do not include antivirus. That would be a better choice unless you are using pirated apps/market.
Here a simple troubleshooting guide to follow. It's not much fun but should eliminate a number of possible causes of the issues you are having.
Factory rest via settings
Flash stock SBF (do not root or unlock)
Do not install any apps for 24hrs to see if problem persists (if no then goto 4, if yes then replace device)
Install only one app a day and see if problem shows up. If so, start over. This time eliminate the suspect app from the list.
I run into this a number of times when servicing phones and very rarely does the issue show up again when the process is followed. It generally tends to be app conflicts or an app update is buggy.
I realize that it's probably my fault. And I blame the phone for not being able to handle the apps like my Droid X, that's all.
One more thing, there are a few virus apps on the market... I've run into a few...

I would get the Galaxy Note, but I'm waiting for a quad-core device. And Sprint is stupid for allowing LTE Devices without Android 4.0.

Mobile Security?

A year and a half ago when I first got my Droid X I used Lookout Mobile Security. As far as I knew it was doing its thing just fine. I used that all the way up until I got my replacement X2 midway through last year.
So I was looking through the market for new antivirus software and I saw that Avast is out. Tried that and I liked it a lot. Has root support for rooted devices too. Custom firewall settings(works), call/SMS blocker(haven't tried yet). It also has an antitheft setting which can make everything on your phone sleep except the GPS so you can find it, set off a lost or stolen alarm, etc. It even has an option to "Survive Cyanogenmod ROM Flashes" so it will remain installed on the phone even if you flash a new version Of cyanogenmod... I'm assuming. (Antitheft only. Not entire app if I understand correctly)
Only things I don't like about it is the "Web Shield" only protects the default browser via the description. Also, I do not currently use the anti theft because it conflicts with go sms pro and that's what I use to text. :/
So the reason I posted this in q&a instead of themes and apps is because the entire time I've ever had either lookout or avast, throughout the hundreds of automatic scans and less than reputable websites (don't ask) I've gone through......my device has never encountered even a single problem. No viruses, no spyware, nothing even flagged as "potentially unwanted software."
Have you guys ever had virus/spyware issues on your phones? Has an antivirus application ever actually helped you after you received an infected file? Do you even bother using antivirus or do you consider it just 1 more app wasting battery in the background? Just curious....

I have never used an AV program on my phone. Linux in itself is pretty resistant to viruses.
That being said, no AV program will save your ass if you're being an idiot on the internet.
AV is like a condom. Would you diddle a nasty, disease ridden person if you only had a thin layer of rubber between you?
LMAO. ^LIKE^

PSA. In case you didn't know about Cerberus

Cerberus looks like a great anti-theft device. Check it out.

You get a free 6 day trial period. After that it's 4 bucks and some change. Looks like it's well worth it so far.

It's a good app, though some anti virus/malware programs provide some or most of the functions of this program. There is another program like this, GotYa-

I think it would be nice to know where your tablet is if it's stolen, though I have to wonder, who would really risk a confrontation with a possibly dangerous crook over their phone or tablet?

It would be enough to snap a picture of the person who stole your device so you could report it to the authorities. I know that there have been instances when a person was able to provide a photo ID of the thief and the police still did nothing, but there have also been some success stories.

That's true. I have only had one thing stolen my life, knock on wood, it was a portable CD Player.

I've had my PSP stolen which was very upsetting. When I told my mom about this app she shrugged it off and dismissed me as being paranoid. I kept trying to explain the feature that she would really like but she just ignored me. Then I said, "Oh mom.. have you seen my phone? I can't find it!" Then I sent a signal to set off an alarm to my phone so that I could find it and said, "Oohhh~.. there~ it is!" She looked up at me smiling and said, "Yes, I do need that."
She bought the app then and there.

Android Device Manager and Lookout Security & Antivirus does most of the same things and they are both free.
Your Samsung account also has a free service that is called "locate my mobile", You can find the current location of the lost device and you can track the movement of the mobile at 15 minute intervals for 12 hours and I believe it will lock, ring and wipe data also.
Note: None of these will work if there is no wifi signal.

Whereas Cerberus DOES work without wifi or even data. As long as it has basic GSM, you can text it and it can text you back information/ring/gps data, etc etc. It's far more fully featured than the three you mention - try it if you haven't already. I have it on all 4 of my devices and I've found my phone twice with it when there was no internet connection at its lost location.
I'm using it for my phone and my tablet, only need to purchase once. However it works better in phone because of the location of the front camera. Tablets cannot accurately capture the photo of the thief

I've been using Cerberus now for just over 2 years (9/11/2011). Cost me €2.99.
I have tablet (Wifi Note 10.1 2014), my phone (Note 2), my mother phone and tablet, and my friends phone that I pay for all on it.
Thankfully nothing has been stolen, but I have used it to locate my mothers tablet that she thought was stolen, and my friend who sowed up an hour late for dinner and wouldn't answer his phone.
Its nice knowing that its on my devices, and I love the fact that it will take a picture of the person who tried to unlock my phone with 2 or more wrong codes and email me.
