[Q] A Wole Day Use? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I am thinking of switching my Bold 9900 for a SGS2. The only concern I have is if the battery will get me through the whole day on a charge. I expect the screen on time will be about 4hrs with 3G all the time. Mostly texting, surfing, phone calls, and some light gaming.
By a whole day I mean from 8am to 1am (17hrs). Consider that the phone will be stock and any benefits from a custom rom would just be a plus.

It will get you there. But Sammy has also a 2000 mah battery if you want.
A friend of mine has the same blackberry and he also wants to exchange it for the same reason.
Nevertheless Sgs 2 is great phone.

Yeah... not gonna happen, get a spare battery or the 2000mah samsung one and hope it lasts.
There's a couple power saving apps that will toggle 3g for a minute to get emails/updates and turn it off for 15minutes, maybe then it'll last.

Yesterday battery ran out after about 34 hours with 5 hours screen time but mostly in wifi.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

17 hours ? Easy. As long as you use custom ROMs though (with all unnecessary power-hungry apps removed, properly compiled kernel etc)
Mine does last even longer with screen on, 3g all the time.
The only thing that can significantly reduce battery life - screen brightness. It'll last 4 hours at home with mid brightness but I really doubt you can squeeze 4 hours of it lying on a beach in a direct sun.
This's all my own experience of course, might be different for other people

[Q] Is the TB battery life as bad as it seems?

I just bought a Droid X2, but have decided to take it back for an LTE phone before the change in unlimited data.
I really don't like the way the charge looks, but it seems to be just as good as the TB. The TB has the likely potential to have a better community and better roms.
However I cannot have a phone that cant hold a charge for a whole day. And I do keep my phones for the 2 year duration of the contract, so whatever I get I need to be happy with.
I get the idea that the TB lasts between 4 and 8 hours. Is this a hardware issue, or is it the ROM which would be fixed as time progresses?
It is pretty bad. If you live in a 4G area, you should get the extended battery.
There are some settings tweaks, especially in the stock ROM, that help tremendously. The notification/background data is what kills the battery.
I always get at least 8 hrs with normal to heavy use.
But if your streaming video constantly, yeah like 4 hrs.
Most I have seen is around 20 hrs.
Seems like it always dies with about 4 hours of awake time or actual usage.
In a 4G area. And I think it will get better with hopefully a new OTA.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
If you are going to play with ROM's, standard battery life is real bad. I loose about 25% of the battery, 4G downloading, then flashing 1 ROM!
Add 2 hours worth of on anf off fiddling with the screens and setups takes it down to 40% remaining, then I have to turn off wifi, and 4G to get through the workday, ending <10%. If I do 2 ROM's, i'm dead before lunch. Gotta get a cable for work.
Get the extended battery. Mine lasts typically a day and a half with it, moderate usage. Awesome phone.

I can get a full day out of my phone with moderate use (texting, calls, web browsing). I have my settings tweaked and have juice defender running which really helps. I'm on stock ROM and am not rooted, there is a lot you can do to improve the battery.
Well if you use your phone as much as I do then you would be surprised how quickly the Barry drains out haha
Sent from my TB yo.
Mine is usually 60-85% display, and I have it on dead minimum brightness unless I'm outside in the sun, in which case I set it to auto for a few minutes. Mind you, that's maybe five or ten minutes max of screen on time, two or three times a week. On the other hand, a twenty or thirty minute phone call can take ten percent off; I'm one of the people who sometimes remembers that it can make calls, too, so my experience is probably a bit off. I also have most everything set to sync every 2 hours, but I have imo.im running constantly.
If I'm using it pretty heavily, it may be down to 40-60% on the standard battery by lunch, which would be about three or four hours of screen on time. I'm in a 3G area, btw. I just carry a charger; which has the advantage of making other microUSB people happy when their phones die (and we can mock the iPeople with proprietary chargers). Yes, the battery sucks, but every phone has trade-offs.
If you won't have any way to charge the phone (car, wall, etc) during the day, then I don't think you will be happy with the phone. Between my wall charger (or USB cable), car charger, and two batteries (spare is the Seidio 1600 mAh), I'm satisfied.
As for the Droid Charge, the Touchwiz UI compared to Sense is a non-starter.
Is it bad? Yeah, seems like. Is it as bad as everyone is making it out to be? I dunno. I remember a lot of people complaining about the battery when I got the Incredible. With light use (about an hour of internet and email over 3G, one or two half hour calls, and a handful of texts), I'd charge it every other night (and have 30% or so when it went on the charger).
I picked up the Thunderbolt yesterday and charged it overnight. It came off the charger at 7:30 this morning, and I'm showing 54% as I'm typing this at 8:45pm. Since it's new, I was probably fiddling with it more than usual (but not a ton more, as the differences between the Thunderbolt and the Incredible aren't huge).
So with 4G on, yeah, it runs it's battery down faster than my old Incredible. But it seems like I can make it through a day without much difficulty.
EDIT: I figure I might as well mention my settings.
I have the brightness set to about 30%. I shut off any and all vibration. Screen timeout is 1 minute, volume is maxed for everything. Bluetooth and GPS are off (unless I need them). The weather widget updates every three hours. I don't use any other widgets that use data (just a volume profile and a power control widget). The phone can do background sync for my contacts, but my gmail, other mail, and Twitter (Seesmic) are all set to update manually.
I'm getting about 8 hours of moderate usage here as well. I've come to terms with the fact that using a device that is more powerful than my netbook will come with some battery trade-offs.
hey guys,
I'm going to follow this thread for a bit. My HD2 jumped into the Harbor yesterday and will probably be switching to Verizon for my next phone. I'd really like to get the TB, but am really concerned about battery life.
It sounds like people are getting a battery life similar to what I was getting running Gingerbread off the SD card on my HD2...which didn't quite cut it for me on days I was working in the field and not able to charge. But at least with the HD2 I could run WinMo on days like that and not have worry.
Keep the info coming!
thanks

Hello, im currently running with juice defender, but i was wondering if you could help me with what all settings i should tweak to help the battery?
After applying the MR1 OTA update I still wasn't happy with my battery or GPS performance, especially compared to my past phones (Incredible, X, original droid, blackberries, etc)...
After doing a wipe and reloading the apps I use by hand, I have seen battery life match the Inc in 3g only areas, and GPS lock on my location consistently in under 7 seconds.
In mixed 3g/4g areas (where I live), similar results. Battery life and GPS lock are very much improved. And the TB now makes it through the day for me.
In solid 4g areas, well, last night I was surfing the web, reading, looking to see if the GB update for the X had hit. I went to bed around 1 am with 80% battery, didn't hook to charger. This morning at 9 when I looked it had received some emails and auto updated some apps.. battery was at 55% so that is better.
It's still not as good as my droid x, but the TB is certainly more usable than when I first got it a month and a half or two months ago.
The t-bolt is better than my inc was, with bams GB rom I got 12 hours of heavy use with stock battery....my 2 cents...
I just tested my battery life. It was about 2 hours with Carl pagan cosmos on 2g. 4g really eats the battery. After I recharge, I'm going try it over 3g and see if that makes any huge differences.

Do not use Hyperion, QCell or any other cheap ebay/amazon batteries. They are only about 1700mah at best and will kill your phone under moderate use in about 60 to 90 minutes. Maybe less.
I'm on stock GB rooted with all bloat frozen via TB and I can get through a whole day of use on one Samsung OEM batt with light to med usage.

This is no where near the average!
And you seriously must not use your phone, like at all
17 hours at 73% is a bit extreme, but so is 2% per minute drain.
I think I can represent a fairly average user. I usually check email, weather and a little reddit during my morning routine. BT is always on and connects to my car while I drive to work for about 30 minutes. I average about 2 or 3 long phone calls a day on my phone. Some text messaging throughout the day and some short internet sessions on my phone while at work. Plus a few minutes here or there for Draw Something. I stream Google Music every day on my way home for about 30 minutes. Once at home my usage varies depending on what I do for the evening. But so far I usually find I have about 50% battery life when going to bed. I actually made it through Friday and Saturday on a single charge.
So I would say that this phone has above average battery life for an android device. It isn't stellar, but it isn't bad either. My Infuse could eek out about the same life with less use. My N1 never made it even close to this length. My buddy's MyTouch 4g can't usually make it a full 24 hours.

Considering the screen size, the battery isn't actually that big. It sounds enormous due to other phones with almost a thousand less mAH, but I just bought a bunch of extra batteries. The removable battery feature is the biggest reason I switched to Android.
LTE is a HUGE battery killer. I turned off wireless since LTE is SOOOOOO much faster than any wireless connection I'm on. I'd be lucky if I could get through a workday without it being below 50% by the end of a work day and completely dead by 7pm.
Turn on wireless and it's now almost 3pm and still have 78% left.
Lets face one fact everyone is different. .everyone claims this and that and regardless of what carrier or what device people will.never see the batt life they would really.like to see.Say like 50% after 3 days heavy usage that would be a thing we.may see in.smartphones in a few years. Android o.s will always be battery harsh. Its a huge topic.
Another point.on all the claims of Great and terrible batt life has to do with the fact. .people just dont truly get how others may use there devices so heavily..streaming vid...music...downloads...mail sync...Some maybe few truly use there phones 24 hrs non stop. There probably will never be a batt drain solution for those people. So telling one person that batt is fine with all this moderate usage coming from a person who uses there data more like "lightly" rather than heavy, doesnt help a person who is a heavy heavy data user.Neither sides will ever come to an agreement.

Wow that is awesome! I'm getting home with a full days use at around 50-60%- It seems to be better than my captivate was on life that's for sure.
I have had mine for two weeks- On side note? hehehe Does cycling a battery really prove to get better life as time goes by or is it a old school story about batteries use to have memory etc... and now they don't?
Modern batteries don't have memory but their battery meters can become decalibrated which can be fixed with a full change cycle. Nonetheless, I don't recommend doing that too often (I only do it like once a year) since that's bad for the battery.

[Q] How's the battery life?

Long story short, I bought the HTC EVO 4G LTE (The US carrier, Sprint's variant on the HTC One X). Sprint has a 14 day return policy. For me, it ends on Saturday. I'm considering the GSIII.
But the most important thing is, how's the battery life? How well does it do when you're using 3G?
But most importantly, how badly does heavy texting (as in, new text messages every minute for about 4 hours) effect the battery?

I'm in the same boat as you. I love the screen on the Evo but the battery life and multitasking issues have got me strongly considering the GS3.
I've been haunting the forums here and it seems like people are getting amazing battery life. There are many people posting screenshots of 5-6 hours screen on time. I've even seen some that exceed that. By contrast my Evo has been running 3.5-4 hours. That's less than what I was getting on my OG Evo (of course it was rooted and running a custom ROM/kernel ).
I just went and spoke with my Sprint representative about what I'd need to do to make the exchange. I'm 95% sure I'm going to pull the trigger on this switcharoo.
Best of luck in your decision!
Was quite bad at first, but something changed.. now it's awesome. 15 hours and 70% left. Moderate usage and 3G/HSPA+
Do you know what changed to your phone?? 15 hours with 70% left is amazing How often were you using the phone ?
The battery life is fantastic. Just turn off the crappy S-Voice features that wait for your voice input.
How long is the screen-on time? I seriously doubt texting requires heavy usage of the radio. So, the screen is obviously going to be the biggest drain on the battery.
Battery life is misleading straight out of the box. The starting charge is completely out of sync with the phone.
I had to run my battery dry and full charge it to calibrate the battery properly. Once I did, then battery% values balanced out and phone has been a dream ever since.

it was with moderate usage (lots of texts, a few calls, a bit of game play, but not much) and I turned on power saving when I wasn't using the phone(don't know whether this actually does anything when the phone is asleep anyway... and off when I was). Don't have s-voice running (disabled it manage applications menu), turned off motion as I never used it, turned off NFC, S-Beam and Wifi-Direct (some of which were turned on by default! and this is SUCH a battery killer)...
Basically turned off everything that I don't use.. and saved a hell of a lot of juice.

I managed to get the 99% battery issue sorted!
I have used he external battery charger on my 2nd battery and today I thought of trying the new battery for the first time to get some cycles on. Guess what?
The samsung desktop charger powers the battery all the way. I have now 100% on the new one and it dropped as I'm typing now after a good 5minutes of operation, unlike it used to do which was immediatelly after unplugging the charger from the phone.
So I presume that goes with the original assumption that the phone does not overcharge the battery for lifespan purposes. Why would the desktop charger would though?

I'm now giving this method a try.
Charging up my spare battery with the Samsung desk stand/charger.
---------- Post added at 09:48 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:56 AM ----------
Interesting.
I've found the same as above with the 99% issue.
Having charged my spare battery up in the phone, I've then put it in the external charger, which after another 10-15 minutes charge, the LED turned from red to green.
Having now put that battery back into the phone, the battery is still on 100% after being unplugged for more than 30 mins.
Usually, the battery would have dropped to either 99% or 98% as soon as it was unplugged.
So, it would seem that the desktop charger does charge the battery up to the full capacity, while the phone itself, seems to stop at 97-98%. Weird.

[Q] Battery Life

So what's the final verdict on the s3 battery life?
I have read articles that claim that it is great.
I have read articles that talk of a bug that causes battery drain.
I have read articles about official and unofficial fixes.
And I have read articles of these fixes not working.
I'm considering getting one -and I'm not interested in voiding my warranty or risk bricking it, because I already had an issue with a note and when I took it to the shop they told me that they couldn't service it because I had updated the software myself. They stole the inner components. (When I took it to the shop, the phone would still turn on but not boot, but when they gave it back to me ten days later -it wouldn't even blink. I took it to another shop, and they told me that it had been tampered with and parts had been replaced).
So, is the battery life a crapshoot ?
Nothing wrong with the battery life. Even with heavy use you will get a day. Having come from an sgs and sgs2 I have to say this is amazing!
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
For me i thought it was dreadfully low when i first got it. but then again i was on it 24/7 when i first got it n still got a full day of use.
I get about 2-3 days now with daily use. mainly because ive tweaked the display brightness (which accounts for ~50% of battery use) and switched to a dark theme.
I can get up to 7 hours of on screen time. Compare that to my 4 hour screen time on my One X.
So the issues of battery drain have been masterfully dealt with, or are you guys the few lucky exceptions?
Because I've read a lot of articles complaining about battery life (and some kind of bug on the international version of the S3).
But if it's as solid as you guys are saying, I may go pick one up, today.
I can't go more then a full day with medium usage.
I do however like my screen BRIGHT as the sun, good for outdoor use. Gone are the days of 3310 where after a week i remember the thing needs charging lol.
Don't forget, you can always carry a spare battery if your away for a while, juice defender helps too

I am on 50% brightness.
Rooted stock ICS ROM. Tegrak overclocked to 1.6Ghz.
Tons of bloatware removed.
Touchwiz frozen with Titanium Backup.
I get anywhere from 5-7 hours of on screen time depending on what I am doing.
After having owned the device for a few days, I concur with the general consensus. The battery will give you about a waking day's worth at moderate use. You definitely need to charge it every night, if you're going to use it anywhere near the way it was designed/meant to be used. But for intensive use, this will not give you a full working day, so you need to be able to charge it in the work place.

[Q] Battery Life

How many hours of battery life are you getting out of your galaxy note 2 ...Do you disable wifi at and data at night .Another question when I have wifi and data enabled I noticed that wifi overides data so does data do anything to the battery since wifi over rode it ..Im trying to find out wheather or not I should just disbale certian featured and have longer battery life or just purchase an extra battery and carry that around just in case I will admit one thing the battery on the note 2 is definitely good but I question when people say they get two days of battery how much usage and are they disabling wifi and data at night ? I want to get 8 hours of on screen time it seems like I might get 6 1/2 to 7 hours with a day and a half of usage but rarely two days unless im on the phone lightly like 2 hours a day maybe 3 depending on what app im using thats hogging battery life
Did you have a bad experience with a phone charger Bro? LOL
The more you disable the better but at what point does saving battery become more useful than using the phone.
I understand the obsession because I had it with my nexus so I'm not judging people that worry about it but I use this phone for work and fun with 6+ hours day screen on and I am loving that I only charge when I go to bed and don't have to worry about it again.
Mine lasts all day and I'm on it all the time. Either texting, listening to music, email ect. Maybe you have an app running it down prematurely?
I've also bought 3 extra batteries. Their so cheap. So I have one charged up and ready to go no matter what...LOL
No offence but these threads are so useless. Yesterday I got 5 hours screen time and only 11 hours. I average 7.5 hours and over 16 hours. So what's my point? it depends on location, what you're doing, what apps you have etc.
Finally you could have looked at the huge battery life thread or one of the 5 others.

If you want a reason to worry about Battery get a Nexus or Droid Charge and you will have plenty to worry about! These were my last two phones and I obsessed about battery. Now I don't worry.

True it last me all day no matter what I do that said its on the charger till I wake up and charging when in the car
As long as your not running too much in the background, you should AT LEAST get 5+ hours of screen time a day.

Just curious if anyone runs JuiceDefender? Perhaps I'm just paranoid about 4G sucking down my battery but I do hate hitting my wifi and mobile data toggles every day.

Nope, don't need it. I went through the whole micromanaging battery with OG Evo and the Galaxy Nexus. You don't need to do any of that on this phone. It has what I call "second generation" LTE radios, they are much more power efficient, and management of wifi and other radios is also improved. I leave 4G, Wifi, Bluetooth, and GPS and Google sync on all the time. Battery usage is consistently 10% per hour when screen is on, and 1% per hour when in standby connected to Wifi or good LTE signal, dropping to 1.25% in weaker signal areas. Voice uses about 1% per 5 minutes talk time.
