Hi,
I have a HTC Sensation XL and have noticed that its starting to slow down a little as apps start to use up more RAM/processing power etc. Obviously with it being a HTC handset it uses HTC sense which presumably uses some of the system resources and is contributing to the device slowing a little, in addition Sense appears to interfere with some of apps functions such as lock screen widgets. In addition to this there are a few bugs with the phone that came about when HTC issued the update from Gingerbread to ICS, these issues include the 3g connection failing randomly requiring a phone re-start as well as the browser closing randomly, the problem is it does not look like HTC are going to update my handset to Jellybean, which I would really like for the Google now feature.
The upshot of all this is that I am considering rooting the handset so that I can a) get rid of HTC sense and thereby hopefully free up some system resources as well as fix the issues the device has around lock screen widgets etc and b) upgrade it to Jelly bean myself so that I can use Google Now etc and hopefully solve the 3g connections issues etc. The thing is that I don't really know anything about rooting so have a lot of questions I need answering before I decide this is the right option for me.
At the moment the handset is on a contract which does not expire until January 2014, after which point I intend to sell it and upgrade to a new handset (am hoping Google will have released the next Nexus handset by then). With this in mind my first question is if I root the handset will I be able to re-set it to its factory defaults, including all the pre-installed apps, settings etc that HTC put on the handset, in 2014 ready for sale or once rooted and upgraded to Jelly bean will it always remain rooted and unable to be returned to its factory settings.
Secondly if I root the handset will it still work with my mobile phone operator (EE in the UK) or will further work be required to make it compatible.
Thirdly what exactly does rooting involve, I presume its a process whereby I download a publicly designed version of Jelly bean and some sort of software to put on the phone and then remove the old software and install the new.
Fourthly what is the quality of the new OS likely to be like, are there reliability issues etc that I need to be aware of and basically will it be worth the hassle.
Lastly given the age of my handset is it worth rooting it in the first place or shall I put up with it until 2014, are there any other ways to achieve my aims such as keeping the current set up but removing HTC sense etc as well as fixing the 3g connection issues and installing Google Now.
Any advice/answers to the above will be gratefully received, as you can probably tell at the moment I clueless about what to do.
Thanks
Ben
Hello there. I am sort of a noob at rooting phones, this zte reef was my third successful root(or so I thought) of prepaid virgin mobile cheapies. I mainly root to remove and replace the obnoxious VM boot animation on startup--anyone who has owned one of these knows it can wake the dead, and will likely be the root cause of the zombie apocolypse sometime in the near future. I also remove a bit of google bloatware that, as far as I can determine, nobody on the planet actually uses--none of the fancy custom roms and whatnot, and replace the launcher with my beloved Nova.
Anyhow, being a silly noob, and having no prior issues with my previous devices, I did not save any sort of backup this time around, did not install CWM, and carried on as usual. Phone worked fine for several weeks. Then last night I fell asleep with it in my pocket. Battery died overnight as it tend to do in these situations. I awoke, plugged it in, charging screen pops up as usual. Hour later I try to turn it on and after being greeted by the android splash logo......blank screen.
Rebooted. Same result. Rebooted in android system recovery, wiped some things, reboot. Same result. Hard reset, still nothing.
Cannot find ANY rom compatible with this device, much less the stock one. ZTE of course will not provide me with any help. ZTE Reef N810 Virgin Mobile
So here is my question--does anyone have the stock rom for this device? Or is there any other way I could perhaps build a update.zip with the core apps that the system would allow to be installed from recovery mode(I suspect the launcher replacement may have destabilized the system, although why it waited this long to collapse is beyond me).
Throw anything you think of out there, I will try anything and have plenty of time to toy with it. Have to go to the library for computer access, but have access to another VM phone(unfortunately running 4.4 dangit)
Also am able to boot it into Field Test Mode, not sure if that could be used to communicate with the device in some way? Trying to cover all possibilities.
Thank you for reading, and btw xda your forums are, in a word, awesome. Well played!

Hi,
This is my first post so I do not know if it is in the right section.
I have an Android Phone (ZTE KIS V788 – Full spec: gsmarena.com /zte_kis_v788-4586.php)
It runs Android Gingerbread 2.3.6
It keeps turning off and restarts, it is basically not usable anymore.
What can I do to fix it?
And is there any way to update its software manually? (It has 256MB RAM, and 800MHz CPU)
Thanks!

Your issue is the device. No matter what you do to it, it will still act up. The issue is that the device doesn't even have enough ram to run the os properly. 256 mb of ram is just not gonna cut it.

But at new it used to run well, and still has the same firmware (Gingerbread), how is it possible that this issue started just a month ago?
Thanks for the reply!

I bet over the last month you have used it right? Meaning new apps, filling up database files in info? Phones like that are ok at best if left completely stock and maybe an app or two but they all sooner or later suffer the same thing. Mainly as they dont use an Official release version of android. Best advise I can give you is to keep it as clean stock as possible, Use cloud storage for pics and what not so you wont have them eating up space on the device.
You can get out of the soft bricked phase by try rebooting in fastboot menu. If that doesn't work you can try flashing the phones original files which will reset everything on your phone. Though, I recommend getting a new phone because, your still running gingerbread. That is an extremely old os as most newer devices are running lollipop and kitkat. If you don't plan on spending a lot of money on a phone, there are plenty of cheap phones out there. If you do manage to get out the bootloop than I wouldn't run any newer apps on it, as it will crash the phone.

I have always kept it stock, only installed Facebook and whatsapp.
This is a very weird issue, as the phone behaves normal when charging and does not randomly turn off.
I downloaded an app that checks the battery health, and it says that the battery is good.
I also noticed that when the phone turns off and I switch it back on then the battery is completely drained – for example I have it at 100% charge and after the random restart it shows only 9%.

I tried rebooting it, wiping the whole phone and cache in the menu that comes up when it turn the phone up with the + volume button, but it did not help.
How can I flash the phones original files? (I'm new to this)
Hello house,
I have a problem, my IPx8 Quad Core-2.2GHz (1GB,16GB HDD,3G,WiFi,Dual SIM) 8-Inch Android Tablet, with MTK6582 chips, running 4.4.2,
Can I get a rom that can work for it. Or can I load 4.2.2 on it, is the same MTK6582.

To flash the phones original files, you will need to look up a video either on YouTube or find another website with informative directions. Basically, you will need fastboot files and roms/ img files to revert your phone. You will need a computer and usb cable for this. Go to YouTube and search how to fix a bootloop or how to fix a bricked/soft bricked phone. Best of luck.

Sounds like your battery is one of two things. 1. Its going bad. (Many reasons why the app is tell you its fine, Thats 2) 2. The battery is a fake and there is software that was changed to hide this. A common practice in some places in the world. The reason it is only now failing "could" be that it is starting to die but the software is still set to show you its good.
The fact that it works fine when it is plugged in would support those theories.
You could try reflashing the files as suggested, but do yourself a favor and DO NOT use some youtube video. At least not before reading up. The issue with youtube videos is that if something goes wrong then you are stuck even worse with no idea what to do. Then you will find yourself right back here.
So i bought the phone yesterday,i opened it and did the casual setup including setting up 10 times my finger on the scanner.
So by the time the phone was setted for first time there were official software updates poping and i clicked them to download and install...after the updates were done i found out that fingerprint sensor settings were missing (both lock screen and fingerprint & security section) so i did a factory reset hoping it was just a minor issue...After the factory reset the options were still missing...i got 5 days left to return the phone if there are problems and i want to know if anybody knows
1.is the problem software related and i just need to wait for official update to get fixed?(i heard december lg launches official nougat version for the G5)
2.is it hardware problem so i take the phone back for repair?(power button works perfectly)
i really loved the phone so far especially the camera and everything and i really want to enjoy it (my prev phone had a lot of software bugs and i never actually enjoyed full of it...)
anyone know any fixes?i dont want to get into custom rom again (i really like the lg ui for change) if its software problem
Thank you for your time!
i guess no one has the same problem and my device is faulty?
I would try and exchange it because I don't have this problem and if a factory reset didn't fix it it's probably a hardware issue.

my bad people,it was NOT LG's problem, hardware AND software are perfect, its my first phone with scanner and i found out the hard way that to add fingerprint i HAVE to add a pin or a different unlock method before adding figners....sadly i rooted my device firstly to add cyanogemod and then i found out...so now i lost my warranty i guess...but at least now i know and if anyone else finds the same ""problem"" this thread will help him
Lesson learned for you. Why install a custom ROM right out from the start? Based on my experienced with my G5. It's performance is great. All things are great. I'm fine even if my phone is not rooted nor can't install a custom ROM. Unlike my G2. But by so far the phone is running great. So enjoy first the things on stock firmware.

i didnt want to install custom rom as i already had in my prev device (oneplus x) and i always likes lgs skin on android
but i wanted to see if the problem was software issue that cyanogen could fix in this case...i wanted lgs support to be my last resort as their services are bad, they tend to take week(s) to fix the phone and i heard from people that their phone returned scratched (that lg supported claimed they didnt do it)...so yeah i prefered to install custom rom and risk that i have to live without fingerprint than send the phone and get it back deleayed and probably in scratched condition
lesson learned indeed
My wife and I both bought Samsung Galaxy Alpha phones when they were released. It was a fine phone until about a year ago when they updated. After that update both phones became miserably slow. As in, sometimes can't even respond in time to answer phone calls slow. Today I started the GPS and it didn't offer directions until I arrived at the destination. Yet, sometimes it'll be very fast as if nothing were wrong.
I know it's not a hardware problem because it's affecting both phones. I just replaced the battery on one of the phones (taken from a new Galaxy Alpha). Doing a factory reset didn't fix the problem. Resetting the phone helps some but not for long. I'm wondering if it's just FUBAR now? Should I try rooting the phone? Maybe Google fixed the problem in a later update.
If you factory reset it and restore everything back again you won't help the phone in anyway (if that's what you did), try using a custom ROM like EpsilROM, then delete unnecessary system apps, also try using less RAM hungry apps like Facebook or find a way to kill apps when you don't use them
