I have been repeatedly peeved by publishers putting their magazines on iPad and neglecting Android tablets.
I noticed recently that the New Yorker is offering their mag on the Galaxy Tab through a application called Next Issue - you can download it directly at nextissue.com The app itself seems to have a fair number of other magazines, and have been adding more.
I installed the app, entered my existing subscriber # and it works great! Great interface that is perfect for my Flyer!
I cant find any good magazine apps that offer magazines I want to read.. and the few that do.. their apps suck/have crappy interfaces..
I really like the kindle app but there are no magazines that I want to read on it..
Scuba Diving, and video game magazines and toy magazines interest me.. yet I have never found one on any of the good readers.. nothing from amazon, nothing from kindle, nook.. etc..
I know what you mean - it is a real pain to search through different publishers that create their own crappy platforms.
According to their website, Nextssue.com is a joint venture between Condé Nast, Hearst, Meredith, News Corporation and Time, Inc. so this might be _the_ simplified platform that makes it easier for publishers to put their content on tablets.
The NYer app is pretty slick, the interface is a little unintuitive, but is easy to pick up. Graphics heavy magazines might be more of an issue reformatting/reflowing to a tablet. One thing that sucks on that platform is that some of the content is designed for larger screens and is not backwards compatible - like Car & Driver is only for 1280x800 tablets

Thanks guys, didn't see it at first on the web page. Can't wait to try it out. Been dissappinted that Barnes & Noble never added the New Yorker to their list of magazines readable on the Nook App.

Just downloaded an issue of the New Yorker to test it out. Really, really like the format. I could se myself re-subscribing... especially since a subscription to the magazine apparently entitles me to the digital editions for free! Yeah!

When I get my GT10.1 I plan to read a lot of books. I tried it on my DHD using Aldiko, but I think the screen is to small.
I've seen the videos of the preinstalled book app, it looks sweet! Is it a Google app or Samsung?
I'm wondering what book apps would you reccomend?

It's the Google Books app. But I find myself using the Kindle app.....but I guess that because I have an amazon account.

Heh, apparently Google Books is not available in Sweden yet...can't find it on the Market and the Google Books internet page just tells me it's not available. Wonder if Samsung will remove the app on the European/Swedish Tabs...

The google books app and kindle app are both fine, but I need the ability to sideload epub files, so...
I do wish you could limit the page length in aldiko though. One full screen (in portrait) is an awful lot of text.
Aldiko lets you load ePub files from your SD card. I used Aldiko heavily on my Evo 4G but I find myself preferring the Nook app on the tablet. It loads ePubs, splits the pages in two in landscape mode & has page transitions like you see in the Books app. I haven't tried Kindle, but Kobo also lets you load ePubs.
In general I like google book and like the animation of it. However, its still very poor when it comes to functionality. You can't highlight, write note, or annotate. The app by itself remember your last location but you cant mark a page. It still needs more work to be done as i think its unfinished app. I contacted google regarding that, and they said that they are still working to improve the app as its still and i quote "a baby"
I am gonna receive my Tab 10.1 tomorrow and as you have mentioned, i will be doing lots of reading as its one of the reasons i bought the tab. For the meaintime, I think I will go with the Kindle version unless otherwise, google impvorved their ebook.
I am using Nook. Kobo is also good. But anybody know if there is any book app which has built in English dictionary ( or atleast link to an external dictionary) so if you want to know meaning of a word you just highlight and option is there for meaning/synonymous . This is helpful for people for whom English is not first language.
I've tried quite a few, and I find Montano Reader the best for me. Full anotation and highlighting, bookmarking, side loading of epubs and PDF's. I will let you read almost anything.
Asus has a nice books app mybooks I think, they extracted from the transformer Not sure if its working on other tablets yet.

I'm all about Kindle. I guess it's partly because I have a lot of books there, and don't want to switch, but I like that it's not overly animated, and I can highlight and search in google, wikipedia, and see dictionary definitions directly from the page.
Kind of blows me away that google didn't add in the functionality to highlight and perform a google search.
I have tried pretty much every reader on the market after getting my gt10.1. Nook is probably does the best job of having all the desires features (thought definitely not perfect). Kindle and google books are lacking major features (most importantly highlighting, bookmarking etc + importing non-drm files). Third party apps like cool reader, aldiko and fbreader all have great functionality, but they lack the polished UI you get from the big names. So I chose Nook, because it has the most functionality to go with its polished look. If it had custom fonts it would be near perfect for me.
I've been using the Nook app so far for my limited reading. I tried that, a well as the Kindle app, and prefer the Nook app so far. Nook seems to have more formatting options and I like the "butter" color scheme for daylight reading - it's sort in between the white and sepia settings in Kindle(both of which are available in the Book app as well).
My biggest compliant so far is that text selection can be difficult. I haven't quite figured out how to consistently make a selection so far.

I hope at least some of you have tried the free Zinio reader app on Android Market. It has a specific layout for Honeycomb tablets (not just an upscale of phone version). Though the subscriptions cost you, there are many free magazines available for you to test the waters.
What I want to know is, is it possible to read a page, in portrait mode, without zooming in? I mean is the text legible in default unzoomed condition, on a 10.1 inch screen?
Btw last month this app was updated to be optimized for Tegra 2 chipset. Here is a before and after video by Nvidia.
App works well. Easily readable. However, as I don't mind paying for magazines...I find it hard to pay the subscription fees for digital copies. They just seem high.

Keep your eye our for free subs on any of the deal forums (fatwallet, slickdeals, etc). I snagged a year of popular science thru zinio for free a month back. Supposedly if you email the publisher xometimes they will convert your paper sub to zinio if you have an agreement through zinio. I havent tried that yet myself but I plan to soon.
Mediocre. Still choppy. Issues are same price or more than newsstand. Ipad2 app is much much more fluid.Android app is a tad faster.

find where the app stores its data, check the file format, if its the same copy your stuff in that folder
I have a non supported device (Notion Ink Adam).
Does anybody know of a work around? I tried changing the device to the a Motorola Xoom in the build.prop, but no go.

I'm a big fan of HTC's reader app, but unless you have a Kobo account you're left to converting epub and mobi files in Calibre. This is typically the case for me as most of my books have come from either Amazon or Barnes & Noble.
Could you guys that have Kobo give some insight into the service? How dies it compare to Amazon and B&N? What about selection size?

You don't have to use calibre to convert epubs. They are natively supported. Just restart your flyer and they import. If you get a request for your username and password, contact Barnes and noble. It's something like your B&N username and last 4 of card used to purchase. All of my books auto import now. I have not purchased from kobo yet, and don't use calibre.

Amazon is the one I typically convert from. Most of the books I got from B&N don't need conversion.

I have been using Kobo since picking up the Flyer. I believe you will find it an excellent service once you have your account set up on the tablet. When I buy a book using the Kobo reader app I just enter in my password for a purchase and it begins a down load right to the Flyer. I have used Mobi pocket and have downloaded from project gutenberg also.
Kobo was Indigo/Chapters, the Barnes & Noble of Canada. (It was recently sold to Rakuten (of Japan).)
Books show up on it a few weeks after release on Amazon and B&N. Selection, otherwise, seems about the same. Prices equivalent to B&N on my comparison shopping on a few items, and both about $1/item over Amazon.
However, so far, only Amazon carries the book that my son was a co-authored, called Reinventing Fire.
OTOH stay away from the Kobo Vox, their Kindle Fire competitor.
You know, I really like the Reader app. The aesthetics of it are nice, the animations are slick, the pinch to zoom, non-square-and-plain highlighting--like it all. I've purchased a few books through Kobo, and had no problems what-so-ever, and their prices were good.
However...
I do a lot of highlighting and note-taking, and want a backup of those. I found no indication that the Reader backs-up or syncs to the cloud (and when I asked HTC on Facebook, they agreed that it does not.) So, I switched to Kindle. I tried both Nook and Kindle apps, and like the Kindle functionality the best. I'm wrapping up a few books in Reader, but then will be all Kindle (again, just 'cause of the cloud-sync business.)

There are plugins which you can use. Search for "apprentice alf". That should point you in the right direction.
About the native reader app, I never use it. Not enough settings. The margin is way too wide (top and bottom). This makes it unusable to me.

you can customise everything...fonts and colours and how to turn the pages and sort by tags and collections...but most importantly, the non-proprietary reader software don't own and take over your books
i recommend sticking to epub format because they are the only true open formats...having all your books in a proprietary format leaves you stuck with that provider, and if you are already on xda i assume you don't get a kick of being told how you have to use something
go with Mantano Reader...in my tests it was the most comprehensive (this from a chick with over 780 books in her collection, so this was a bit of an important subject for me...i sold my Asus Transformer because it wasn't comfortable as an ereader)
also, learn how to use Calibre to manage your collections...i have my library on a server as an opds catalog, which Mantano can access, and i also have it hosted on a no-ip domain

I use Moon Reader Pro. I have customized a lot of the viewing options and love it. If you use Ivona, you can use TTS to have the book read out loud.
I used Calibre to convert my 300 books from www.ereader.com because I am afraid it is going to go under. I had been using that site for over a decade for my ebooks. The website has really gone down since BN bought it out about 3 years ago and they have not updated their Android app since the beta release.
I thought I'd make this list of Apps that i find very usefull on my tab.
Most of them are optimized for tablet resolution. I'm looking forward to seeing your suggestions to add them to the list.

ASUS Supernote (Free)
This is the notetaking app that comes with the transformer...and its friggin awesome! You can't get it in the market so you have to sideload it. So far i have found no notetaking app that works as well as this one does!

So you like to read comics? This is in my eyes the best comicreader hands down!
It really shines if you use it in combination with the comicrack program for pc. You can sync your libraries, read status, and lots of other stuff. The paid version offers wifi sync but the free version works perfectly fine! The dev is very supportive and open to suggestions. If you like comics, check this out!

This is my UPNP player of choice. I have a homeserver running XBMC providing all my TVshows and Movies and bubbleUPNP does a great job without a lot of hassle streaming them to the tab. The free version works great aswell!
Mantano Reader (Free/3,99€)
After trying a lot of e-readers I finally settled with this one. It has a nice interface, simple controls and quite a bit of customizability. Plus it supports epud and pdf formats, incase you get your books from "somewhere else"
Facedroid (1,25€)
My facebook app of choice for the tablet. Still being actively developed with very nice devs. Any Bugs? Write them and it will probably be fixed tomorrow!
Total Commander (Free)
Maybe you know this from Windows. Its a very advanced and powerfull file manager and there is a beta version for android! Pretty awesome app, with two pane view which makes copying and moving stuff about pretty easy! Not in the market, must be sideloaded but can be downloaded directly at the developers site.
Will post some more when I get the time.

The app works perfectly fine on both my smartphone a rather weak LG Optimus V and my tablet the overpowered Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 wifi
i have the wifi only tablet and it works perfectly fine for me.

For those looking for an ebook reader and tending to use or even buy Aldiko, the following information might be of interest.
I purchased Aldiko and with change from Note 10.1 to Note 10.1 2014, pages with graphics were suddenly displayed as blank.
Some tests showed me finally, that Aldiko is yet not able to cope with the screen resolution of the Note 10.1 2014 (if run in split screen mode, the pages are displayed properly).
Unfortunately, although Aldiko knows about the problem since October and the reason since December, nothing happend. Instead support requests are simply closed without any comment, there is no answer or reaction from the support at all.
Presently, I cannot recommend Aldiko anymore. A pity as I paid for the software.

I have a subscription on the beam store where Aldiko offered the option to download purchased ebooks within the app.
That's why I purchased (and I wanted to support the developers as the app was good on my GT-N8000).

If you need something fast mupdf beats all competition. The UI is kind of clunky but when it comes to speed of rendering pdf it can't be beat.

I have MoonReader, what I missed is the direct integration of eBook stores (buying and downloading).
And what I do not understand is the fact that Aldiko knows about the problem but did not fix it and the app is still available for the Note 10.1 2014 in the app store.
I like the Mantano, the interface is nice and clean and it handles notes well other than the insistence of heavily branding exported note review sheets.
The biggest issue with Mantano is it's inability to handle pdf files. If you select text from a pdf and copy to another application or activate TTS it splits w or ds wi th l o ts of sp ace s, so it renders TTS and copy functions as useless. I wrote to Mantano as at £6.69 it's the most expensive single app I've bought, I had the following response:
" Thank you for your email. Yes we are aware of the issue that you report. It is caused by the software component (from Adobe) that we are using to parse the PDF. We are investigating fixes but we currently have nothing really satisfying. We don't let it be, we'll try to fix but it might take longer than we'd like..."
This is unacceptable as far as I'm concerned for a paid app, ezPDF can cope well with pdfs, but the interface is the equivalent of an ageing digital turd.

Thanks for the hint... now I just need to get the part working after login (I am always sent to the web site instead of showing the content of the private section inside the app).
As Aldiko still just closes all support requests without answering, I contacted Google for a refund. And I got the refund.
So, as a result people should clearly thing before buying Aldiko with regard to the support policy and the behaviour in fixing bugs.
I like iReader Pro, has no problems with everything I throw at it (epub, prc, mob), works well.
It is free on the p[lay store and has no ads that I've seen. Liked it from Gingerbread over Aldiko...
Give it a shot... Price is right...
I used to use Moon reader, but now I tend to just upload my drm free books to google play and use the play book reader. It syncs, it reads to you (with ivona voice amy, it's tolerable) and it stays in your cloud library. And it has the smoothest 3d page turn animation. I usually end up buying a Kindle ebook, use calibre plug in to dedrm in windows then convert to epub then either upload to google play on the pc, or upload it later when accessing my calibre library with the calibre companion app.

Try cool reader. Its not as fancy as others but it has more settings than any other reader. You can really adjust your reading environment. It also supports tts. I own the others but i usally use cool reader.
