Wifi-only Galaxy S2 model? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A co-worker of mine is interested in a wifi-only Android handheld... something he can buy anywhere, without a data plan... but not a tablet. Something the size of a phone... like a 4" screen. There used to be a wifi-only Galaxy S... is there such a thing for the S2?
Ideally:
- Android
- OLED screen
- 4" (5" might be ok, but no bigger)
- Good GPS
If not Samsung... any recommendations for a comparable device?

Thanks... the Galaxy 4 though was the wifi-only version of the Galaxy S, which has horrible GPS issues. Due to excellent GPS needing to be a feature, that eliminates the Galaxy 4 and Galaxy 5, unfortunately.

Certainly a technical option, but at $550, not a practical one.

I'm sure I've seen wi-fi only option on s2 but can't seem to find it now. Can anyone confirm this pleas
e?

never heard this kind of model before.

There isn't a wifi only model of the S2. The closest thing in this case is either the Galaxy S series already mentioned, or a wifi only tablet.
I get the impression that Samsung are giving up on the wifi only phones now. I assume they've never done that well.

I would say Galaxy Note, but that depends on you liking a

Nexus or SII would be my next choices.

fine dude , if i opt for samsung which one should i go for it ? i can go upto $650 not more than that . r8 now am using motorola defy and am very much pleased with that , will take your comments as my buying option .
Motorola makes decent phones hardware wise, but they lock the bootloaders, install tons of bloatware and make your phone model obsolete in a few months.

I think the Galaxy SII is the better android phone now. If you want to want to hack him, there is a lot of ROM availables. Some of my friends have it, the screen is very good, and the battery life seems to be pretty decent too. It's a powerful, and beautiful. Take it

guess i made this post in Q and A only !
and above now the options are S2 or nexus or note ?
Just as a note (no phone pun intended) if you go with the S2 I'd personally recommend trying to get one that's more standard GSM, international version for example avoid the Samsung Epic 4G Touch if possible, it has a bigger screen, but it's not as compatible as the other variants are... the GSM versions seem to have more ROM options, I guess maybe it's due to the CDMA modem in the E4GT, but there isn't even a full-compatible release of Cyanogenmod for the E4GT and the official ICS isn't out for it either. I have the E4GT and I really like it, but I bought it thinking Cyanogenmod was already out for it, but it was only available for the other SG2 models. The same might be true for Skyrocket? Just something to think about.
I surely would buy Sgs II.
I own a Galaxy S. My bro has a Sgs II and i felt in love with his phone. ABSOLUTELY GREAT.
Galaxy Nexus is awesome too but i didnt saw it in person
no choice
hi, i got samsung galaxy 2 (sgs2) for almost half a year - couldnt be happier!!!! my friends with nexus and motorolla are sorry they didnt get my phone. I suggest to get either sgs2 or samsung note depending on the size you are comfortable with as they are practically identical aprt from the screen size.
Also, dont forget that sgs3 will be out in few month and 3d phones are about to start their crusaide.
Go to gsmarena.com and do a comparison (under the photo of the phone on th eleft click on COMPARE) with any of the phones and by spec sg2 will will - by user experience as well @gsmarena.com/[email protected]
hope it helps...

[Q] Possible to port Galaxy Note ROMs to Galaxy Player?

Aside from the fact that the note has slightly higher specs plus a mechanical button, aren't they nearly identical?
There are several ROMs in that section of the forums I would love to try but I don't have time to test nor do I want to brick my device. Although I could always restore from a CWM backup if that situation ever arises.

No. Don't try that lol I think "slightly higher specs" overlooks the fact that it's meant for a 1280 x 720 screen. Our galaxy can only output at 800 x 480 with a single core processor as opposed to a dual/quad (depending on version) processor. The two phones are not a like at all. Size of the phone doesn't constitute equality in software/hardware terms.
Thought so. At first I assumed the note was just the player with calling abilities. Thanks

Correct. The Samsung Galaxy Player 4/5 is basically a super-sized Galaxy S. There is actually on very minor differences between the two (the SGPs have much better overall performance for reasons).
I really hope Samsung decides to re-re-fresh the SGP line up with something that could turn heads... I mean throw SuperAMOLED on an Media player with a little higher resolution (maybe 720p) and I'd be sold asap.

S3 is better than the S2, you want the best phone get the S3, you can't afford it, get the second best the S2. You're loosing 5mm on the screen size, some dpis (quite a bit actually ) and two cores.
Get an iPhone.
Seriously tho, get a Nexus. The last thing you want is to have anything to do with Samsung's ****ty firmware (even if it's only for a few hrs on the day you actually buy the phone). Samsung's refusal to play ball with developers has constantly made SGS2's devs lives difficult.

S2 DOES have many custom ROMs. The issue isn't that...
I believe the issue is the inherent difficulty in getting ALL the hardware features supported with AOSP/AOKP builds due to how Samsung implemented their framework.
So though there are a lot of ROMs, both based on Samsung stock, and also AOSP and AOKP, the AOSP/AOKP ROMs don't support everything. I believe TV-out via MHL and FM radio are still not supported on AOSP/AOKP on the S2.
If you want the Android experience the way Google intended, get a Galaxy Nexus, as MistahBungle suggests.
They're a bit cheaper than the S2 right now anyways.
The only downside as far as I'm concerned about the GNex is the lack of external SD card support.
I was being facetious (well, sort of). What I meant was Samsung make a dog's breakfast of their firmware. Yes, there is plenty of custom firmware for the SGS2 which is its saving grace. However, Samsung stuffing up their firmware still makes life hard for devs. It makes it difficult for devs to get some features to work on custom roms (TV Out, WiFi Direct anyone ?). Ask people like Entropy512 & Codeworkx what they think of Samsung & their approach to firmware ;-D
With the Nexus it's Google firmware. Google don't seem to have an anti-dev stance like Samsung seem to have.
The only reason I got an S2 was due to the slightly better specs & the SD card capability. If I'd known about the firmware thing at the time, I might well have got a Nexus.
Put it this way, when I'm due to get another phone next year (assuming I don't kill my S2 in the meantime), if Google's phone at the time has a micro SD slot, I'll be getting it.
Edit - CTMG, read my mind ;-)

I dont know I'm a bit confused right now , I like the Nexus and I dont care about the SD card capability but I think the spec. of the S2 is a bit better like MistahBungle said and I want a phone that can hold on with me another year or two , so would i feel the difference between the Nexus and the S2 in the spec. ?

They both have their strengths and weaknesses. I personally like the feel of the S2 over the Nexus, but you may think differently.
If you're talking about performance, it will depend on what angle you're looking at. The TI OMAP in the GNex is better than the Exynos in the S2 in some areas, and vice versa in other areas.
From most reports, the two phones are pretty neck and neck, each edging the other out slightly in some areas.
The camera in the GNex is 5MP vs 8MP in the S2, but megapixels isn't everything when it comes to picture quality. The sensor in the Nexus is slightly bigger, and has zero shutter lag, which compensates for the difference in pixel count.
So in conclusion... it depends.
Your best bet is to go to a store that has both models on the floor for demo units, and to play with them both to see which one you like.
I´d buy the S3 if I had the money tho, but S2 will be enough for at least this year.

[Q] 7+ inch tablet which can be used as a phone?

One of my big disappointments with the Nexus 7 is that it can't be used as a phone (meaning GSM, not data/wifi-based).
As of now, it seems to me the best tablet which can be used as a phone is still the samsung galaxy tab 7.7 (assuming the Note 10.1 is too big to carry around, personal preference, that). Of course, that one looks like it's never getting JB or any other updates from Samsung (so much for the 1 and a half year pledge...).
Any other recommendations? Seen rumours of a 7 or 7.7-inch note, that would fit the bill assuming I can afford it.

well i think that any you find with celluar service is going to be data only, which would suck for calls. i think right now the note is still the best bet.

Really, only Samsung makes tablets with gsm? Note and note 2 is just a bit too small to be a hybrid device for me, would still need my galaxy tab 10.1 for music sheets etc that way...

Should I buy Galaxy S2?

I had HTC Desire for nearly 3 years, and it is a great phone, but I think it is time to upgrade, because:
- it is annoyingly slow with my regular set of programs installed, even on fastest available roms
- it doesn't have kernel 3.0, and because of that JB roms have shortcomings
- a little bit too small screen for GPS navigation
- really crappy camera
- somewhat short battery life
Some time ago I had a chance to look at Galaxy S2 in person and it looked like a perfect phone (at least for 2 minutes I had it in my hands).
Somewhat bigger screen, more internal storage, kernel 3.0.
I use custom roms, so big development community is important for me. I have been spoiled by Desire as it (still) has a large one.
Galaxy S2 would cost me around 170-200 euro to get it.
Should I take that, or look for something else in this price range?
My requirements:
- larger screen (not necessarily much larger)
- android (duh)
- solid build quality
- large development community
- noticeably faster CPU than Desire (Dual+ core would come in handy)
- microUSB
- good/very good camera
- good battery life
- price up to 200 euro (used)
- would be nice if it had FM transmitter (not receiver) but it is not necessary
- it must by BLACK or therebout
No. Why would you buy a phone that's been out for two yrs ? Get an S3 or S4 if you want a Samsung phone.

Because I don't care how long the phone has been out, but how well it suits my needs.
Plus, S3 and S4 are surely more expensive.
Personally, between S2, S3 and S4, I would recommend the S3. (Although it wouldn't fit the budget, unless there are some offers!)
Mainly because it is relatively newer and you can expect new Android upgrades from Samsung (at least KLP) for it. Samsung has already announced that 4.2.2 will be the last update for S2, according to samfirmware. And with so many (mainly, codeworkx) developers not showing much love for Samsung devices of late, I am sure it would take that much longer to get custom ROMs updates.
If you do decide on S2, it is a really good device!! Great build, great design etc. But I suggest you buy the OMAP variants (i9100G), as it has better support from development community. Owing mainly to TI playing nice compared to Samsung (Exynos).
Several developers are not happy with Samsung's support for Exynos devices and Samsung's lack of support for the dev community of late. For me, this is a major concern.
Why are you advising the guy to get the g variant?.There was almost a riot in your country a year ago when suppliers were giving out g variant models instead of the plain gti9100 model.
If you want then buy a Nexus 7
Nexus has a huge development community and is also in ur price range

Why would I buy a tablet when I need a phone?
Samsung Galaxy S2 is still a powerful device even beat some newest devices (of course not high-end ones) but it's still can go well with mid-range devices.
Get S2 or S4.....I (personally) don't like the S3.The big thing is,that S4 hasn't a big developent support, since it's a new phone.Galaxy S2 has still a big support...I still see new ROMs and updates every day or week. And it is fast,no matter what people say...get the setup as in my sig...my phone was never faster.
So S2 looks interesting, but this is what I have been told about regarding its screen:
I also considered s2 but there's one serious setback to it. Namely, the screen is amoled and without pentile matrix.
What's bad about it you ask? pixels that are frequently used lose color and items that you have on screen for most time are somewhat paler than the rest of the screen, and you can see their shadow for the whole time, ppl reported that with all amoled displays and non pentile of s2 is even more susceptible to that. That happens even to devices 3 months old, depending on how heavily they are used I guess. You can google it to see for yourself, just type galaxy s2 amoled burn in. There are also few good YouTube vids showing that. Items that you usually can see are burned in status bar, soft keys from your most used app, keyboard, alarm icon and "fully charged" sign across the screen as during night charging the phone lights up when battery is full and keeps the screen on until you turn it off or unplug it/on some ROMs at least, stock including/.

Oh, if I wasn't clear: Right now I would prefer to use an S3. But if I had a fixed budget and decided on S2, I would by the G variant. -- This is what I meant.
Honestly, I thought those 'riots' were because Samsung decided to slip in the G variant very slyly. No intimation of any sort to the buyers.
I have read about the lower bechmarks on i9100G etc. Any other difference that goes against the i9100G? (Sorry that I am hijacking the thread, just wanted to know)

The g has a lot less development than the plain gti9100,unless something changed on here in the last 2 months. And the models are based on regions(supposedly).
Theres a wiki page that lists the models and explains a bit about them,so he can look at that and see what options are best for France.
I think the lte variant is the best, but maybe its for other regions of the world.

Meh, I am stuck.
I read around here that s2 display is horrible when compared to s3.
s3 has even cheaper feel, and is 100-170e more expensive
Sensation is useless to me.
Price of S4 is absurd...
By the way, are there some roms for S2 that allow changing software DPI? I have seen ParanoidAndroid on Desire can do that, but apart from this ROM, I haven't seen it anywhere else.
