Until recently I had a phone with no search button. this was frustrating, so I rooted and altered the keypad layout file to change the trackball click (a nice bouns feature on phones, it turns out) to launch the search function. However, there was a problem: occasionally, it wouldn't work. not all the time, just sometimes. I figured maybe it was a side effect of the hack, that maybe the stock rom I had just got confused sometimes thinking there shouldn't be a search available at the time.
But recently, I upgraded to a new phone that does have its own search button, a real one. but once in a while, it won't work. the other face buttons do, just not this one, sometimes. this is both when launching google search fromt hehome screen, and the in-app search function.
and thinking back, my first Android was sometimes like that too, but I just thought it was due to the search "button" being one of those capacitive spots (shudder) that just tend to be naturally less responsive at times.
so, what gives? is this a common thing on some phones, i.e. does the function lag or something? to be clear, on all three phones, I never had problems with the other three buttons.

Hey all,
I'm experiencing a strange touchscreen phenomenon. I'm rooted and was previously using xtrSense. Recently I switched to xtrROM and while I LOVE so much about this ROM, I have been experiencing some touchscreen issues that arise with increasing intensity and are making my experience with this phone increasingly frustrating. I seem to encounter dead parts of the screen; consistent areas where the touch screen becomes unresponsive or acts strange.
Examples:
Keyboard - There are consistent letters that just will not recognize when I press them or can only be accessed by starting on one letter and then sliding over the the one I want, e.g. the L and M in landscape, the V, I and caps toggle in portrait. Other things go in and out as well, i.e. the sensitivity of touching one letter. There are times when the keyboard just wont consistently settle on one letter when I try and select one.
Other buttons - I am consistently having issues selecting buttons in gmail, like the OK button on a pop-up window. I have to play the rotate my screen game to get the button to work. Also, the OK button in the window of many SENSE programs, like alarm clock and mail. I press in the area of the button all over and I get nothing, but the CANCEL button right next to it work without fail.
I do have other screwy touch screen issues at times as well, e.g. my home, back, menu buttons won't respond, or will think they're part of what is displayed on the touch screen. I also on occasion have bizarre issue switch the LP dock. It won't find it's home and will constantly shutter between two rows.
The question is, has anyone else experienced this, either with the ROM and/or LauncherPro? I'm going to be re-flashing the ROM, and maybe even loading up some other ROMs to see if that alleviates the issue, but I wanted to first see if before I go through this if anyone has been through it before and can impart some hard-earned knowledge. I've tried to do some digging on the forums but didn't find much of anything.
Any advice would be most appreciated!
Thanks!

I have not had this experience at all. I used to use both xtrSENSE and xtrROM for several months, although I currently use FroShedYo. It frankly sounds like a hardware issue.
Just to eliminate the possibility, you could 1) do a fresh FULL wipe and flash of xtrROM, 2) go back to xtrSENSE or even better restore a nandroid of your xtrSENSE from before and verify if the problem still persists, or 3) try a completely different new ROM just to see what happens.
If the problem still happens on other ROMs, which I'm very sure it will, then you will know it's a hardware issue and if your phone is either still under warranty or you pay for insurance, then I would exchange it for another Eris.
Yeah, I figured as much. Like I said I am going to do some ROM work, but it may come to admitting that the hardware may be going bad.
Thanks for the reply.
PS GO BUCKS!
Hello all, clueless wooter here. I've been reading the forum for about a week now in preparation for receiving my Gtab, and I truly have not seen this issue raised anywhere else, so I hope I'm not repeating anyone.
On good advice from users here, I tinkered with the gtab using just its out-of-the-box OS when I first got it. I quickly realized that like everyone else I would be picking up a different ROM due to the gtab's lagginess and lack of features.
So I put in clockwork and tntlite 4.3. Everything worked great, I followed all the steps as laid out here, etc. Only one problem: the Home button on the right side of the tablet does not work at all.
This isn't a huge issue, since the screen-based home button on the left side is perfectly usable. But I'm worried that this lack of functionality might point to a bigger problem, so I thought I would ask about it. The other three buttons on that side all work just fine, and the tablet has no other issues that I have found.
Download the screen calibration app from the apps and themes forum. It may reset it. I have had loss of button functionality and this has fixed it.
Also you couuld look into button remapper and button savior. The combo lets you remap the soft buttons to whatever you want (or just turn them off) and puts a small tab wherever you want that when pressed pops up an icon for the search, home, menu and back buttons.
This let me map the buttons to arrow keys which makes surfing the intertubes way easier and never accidentally hit the home key in the dark when playing with the tab in bed.
Hope that helps
i thought the same thing and even filed for an rma but it works if you go into the apps ie the icon on the screen with lots of sqaures then hit the home button it takes you back out of the app manager.. it is not supposed to take you to your home page.

Home button malfunction was a known bug in TNTL4.3 Fixed in one of the supplements. Scroll down to the changelog http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842004
There's a problem with the keyboard of my girlfriend's SK17i and I don't know whether it is a software or hardware problem.
The problem in question is a over-sensitive key, in which for this case, it's the "f" key. Whenever she uses the pop out keyboard, the "f" key seems to be jammed and it would infest any of my messages with a bombardment of "f"'s, making it extremely irritating to use. It's gotten to the point where she don't actually have to press down on the key, all she has to do is slide her finger across it and it would register on multiple occasions. In addition, it would also register if she were to press the other keys around the "f" key, rendering the keyboard almost completely useless.
Furthermore, the extent of the problem actually affects the phone whilst the screen is off; at times, she would wake up in the morning and if she was on whatsapp, the messaging bar would be full of "f"'s and if she was on the homescreen instead, the phone would automatically open up the browser and the search bar would also be full of "f"'s. Moreover, it also affects the on screen keyboard, albeit not as much but at times, the phone would seem to be registering "f"'s as it thinks that the pop out keyboard is in use. Therefore, the on screen keyboard is also becoming highly irritating to use.
I don't know how to fix this and it seems the more likely to be a hardware problem but if anyone seems to have this problem and was able to fix it through a software solution, please let me know as she loves this phone and she don't want to get rid of it! Thanks in advance!
Does the button itself still behave correctly, like you can press it?
It seems more like hardware failure to me.
About those f's, doesn't lockscreen prevent that from happening, while screen is off?
She can still press down the key and it clicks which means that it works and isn't jammed.
As for the lockscreen situation, she didn't actually press down the lock button because she assumes that once the screen goes black, it automatically locks and it does on any android phone. Maybe the "f" key is stopping it from actually self locking.
Also, she says that whenever she presses down on any other key, it has a bit of resistance but on the "f" key, it feels flimsy. We both assume that it is a hardware problem but we just wanted a second opinion.
Thanks in advance!
If it feels "flimsy" then it doesn't behave correctly, IMHO.
Have you tried resetting the phone to factory defaults? If not, give that a try (backup first!), although I doubt it will make any difference.

Exactly. That part blocks it from locking.
It does seem a hardware problem, because there is no such thing as button sensitivity. What I mean, is that key is damaged and is touching the sensor(a small button on chip likely).
If you still have warranty, take it back to shop.
Thanks for the advice! She'll take it back to the seller with the warranty (bought it online with 12 month warranty)
I have a galaxy s2 running ICS (but the issue occurred) and I have a very odd issue with the keyboard that I am hoping someone could help me with. I have searched around but did not find anything already posted.
A short while ago, my screen broke and I had it replaced, good as new. Well almost. When ever I use the messaging app, or another type of app like that (Whats App for example), when you are composing a new message, and the textbox is shrunk down to one line at the bottom of the screen, there appears to be no input detected on that part of the screen, the send button (on the right hand side) works, and the other controls all work fine, just not the textbox.
So I figured that when the screen broke, it messed up that part of the screen, but other apps that have controls in that region (such as the camera app that has the photo button, or the lock screen with the emergency call button) all work 100%.
Its just textboxes at the bottom of the screen that do not seem to accept touch events. VERY odd.
Has anyone seen this before or know of a few tests/checks I can do. I am a new-ish user to Android.

This really sounds anoying but i know several issues quiet close to yours.
For instance sometimes on my sgs+ one side of the screen....in many cases the top side does not recognize any touching by me...
after loocking and afterwards aunlocking the phone everythings allright again...
i would suggest you to try to install a thirdparty keyboard from the play store.
if this doenstn work.....well maybee try another rom but i would send it to samsung to get a new phone...cus errors caused by wrong placed hardware are always comming back
fare well my friend
Am I the only?
I own the Honor 10 64GB Blue from Europe/Italy.
I'm using the honor 10 for something like a month, and I've always had a strange issue with the soft navigation buttons, basically sometimes, not always, whenever I tap the back button, or the multitasking button, it is registered two times, and it is a lot frustrating.
Enabling the hardware vibration feedback, I can tell that is an hardware or software issue because it is too precise. So it is not like my finger slipped and tapped two times.
And I'm not the guy who is installing tons of bloatware apps, (I even deleted half of the preinstalled apps), i just have like facebook, instagram, messenger telegram and whatsapp installed. So maybe not a CPU issue.
So basically what I did was going back to the store, asked for a replacement, and after a week I got a brand new phone, and the same problem happened! So previously I got a Xiaomi Mi5 and never had an issue.
My use behavior consists to do things really fast. But I don't know that has something to do with that, I'm doing the same things I've did with other phones, I owned a Nexus 5 and 5x which also had soft navigation buttons and never had such issue in the past.
I don't know what to do honestly, since no one is having issues with their phone, I've just disabled the vibration feedback for the keyboard maybe is screwing the touch screen (????) I will test it anyway.
And I'm charging the phone with regular USB instead of the fast charge, obviously I've did a lot of hard resets. Now I'm trying to charge it only with the huawei charger
Latest firmware obv. I'm thinking of returning the phone again to get my money back. What a shame, it's a pretty good phone aside from that.
So here is a video attachment showing the exact problem, i just had to tap for something like a minute or two, I've did an hard reset yesterday, only Whatsapp, facebook and telegram are installed, no noticeable CPU load, juts mobile data on
Just look at the very first seconds of the video.
Can't check the video now, but this sounds exactly like the problem I've been having with my Honor 10. In ddition to this sometimes the letter a is not registered. I was going to get my digitizer replaced under warranty, but now I'm not sure if I should. I had this issue from day one.
Similar problem with the touch
It seams related to yours issue my problem. Completely random if I'm on 1 app it minimize, vibrating and the phone go to the home page. Even if I'm in the drawer but not in the home page it turn to the home page.
Is like I've touched the fingerprint sensor, even if I did not. Left at the honor/huawei repair center, back after 3 weeks they did a software upgrade. Now it happens rarely, but still happens.
You guys use some kind of glas screen protector? I had one for some time and had also issues like yours. Some letters werent recognized and also sometimes homescreen button got triggered.
Right now i m using a normal screen protector and all problems are gone.
Same issue here, since day one...
No Screen protector, tried to switch the back Button to the right - but it still exists
Same problem with Honor 9 lite
Using fluid navigation to deal with it , it's less annoying that way , i am Trying to find a workaround for this as well , if anyone know how to fix it.
Let us know in comment ?
Hi, I am too facing similar type of issue with my honor view 20. Please let me know if anyone has got the reason behind it. Thanks.
I never use the on screen button navigation on Honor 10. I was using the fingerprint sensor navigation, and now I'm using Fluid NG.
I don't think my digitizer is broken, since I don't have any issue.
Its all good and smooth.
I just got an Honor 10 Lite this week - I've got a different problem with the navigation buttons.
It's an intermittent problem but I'm sometimes pressing the back or home button half a dozen times before it actually goes home or goes back.
If there's a back button at the top left etc., it will immediately go back.
Enabled haptic feedback and the touch is definitely detected and when you touch the navigation button the screen indicated an circular patch where you touched but the problem remains.
Also tried using gestures, same thing....
Huawei customer service recommends a factory reset, anybody else have this problem?
Well I got a replacement phone, blue this time, instead of black.
For the first couple of days it appeared to be very responsive to touching the navigation buttons but now I'm getting the same requirement to do multiple taps!
