( Q ) Help on unlocking bootloader and installing CWM. - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys,
I just got my atrix, its a nice and fast phone (even before flashing custom rom), i have a few enquiries, hope sifus here can enlighten me on:
1) How do i check whether my phone's bootloader is unlocked or not?
2) I have read the threads in XDA developer, followed the steps and i only manage to get i rooted, on the bootloader unlock part i have used few ways in XDA but i am stuck in the place where it requires u to enter a device unique key in the cmd. ther is no unique key shown.
3) I guess with locked bootloader i am not able to install CWM rite? so i guess i have to settle the bootloader ssue before the CWM ones.
Anyone can help me in this? Thanks in Advance.

1) Screen will say "Unlocked" in the top left corner, at boot screen.
2) For unlocking see Pudding Thread in the Dev section. Install instructions in the OP, along with fastboot commands to enter.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1136261
3) No, you can not install any ROM without first unlocking.

1. To know if you have an unlocked BL, you will read it in the top left corner of the Boot Screen with the M Logo.
2. BY FAR the easiest way to do this is to use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871 . All you have to do is install the MotoHelper driver from the motorola website(link in forum), download the package in the forum, and open one file that will guide you through the whole process. There is almost NO WAY you can mess up with this.
Believe me, I just unlocked my BL yesterday and it took so long because I tried ever other method first.(Stupid)
3. The above link will automatically install either a stock CWM recovery or Tenfar's version. I know that this can be used to install the Alien ROM, but cannot be used for CM7 or The DarkSide ROM's. to install these, download RomRacers Recovery from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1204500 , move it to your sd card, and flash it as you would a ROM.
Congrats, after all of this you should be set, just make sure to do backups along the way.

I have managed to unlock the bootloader, but i am facing another problem now, i flashed iblur (rom) and now i am stucked in the "M logo Dual Core Tech" screen.
Does this mean i have softbricked my device?
I am following this thread to save my phone,

[Q] 2.3.4 software/Unable to Unlock Bootloader

Hello everyone. I am new to the world of android, but I'm a quick enough learner. Here is my specific problem:
I have an AT&T Atrix 4g. It is currently superuser rooted. It is currently running Android ROM 2.3.4.
Shortly after rooting the device, I downloaded ROM Manager and successfully installed through the application Clockwork Recovery. I tried to select the option to back up the current ROM (the stock android) on my SD card.. however, during the load screen, I got an error message stating
"Failed to boot 2
Starting RSD protocol support"
So doing some research, I came upon the conclusion that the reason I can't backup or really do anything with ROMs is that I needed an unlocked bootloader.
I went to Atrix4ghacks and followed the instructions on how to unlock bootloader and install permanent recovery.
This is the critical part: When I entered into the command prompt "fastboot oem unlock", instead of proceeding normally I got the return message:
"OEM unlock is not implemented"
Again, did a google search and read that Android 2.3.4 on Atrix 4g does NOT allow unlocked bootloaders.
So, the questions that I have that result from this are:
1.) Can someone here confirm that, in fact, I am unable to unlock the bootloader on my phone?
2.) If so, is there a viable workaround that is both reasonably safe and not overly complicated? Please note that I have no backup in case something goes wrong, leading me to
3.) Is there a way to backup my stock 2.3.4 ROM without an unlocked bootloader?
4.) Can I revert safely to an older android version that supports unlocked bootloaders?
5.) Can you actually install new ROMs without an unlocked bootloader?
6.) Am I totally screwed?
HUGE THANKS to anyone who actually bothered reading this, and even more thanks to anyone who can answer/point me in the right direction. Much appreciated!!!
thats becouse u havent flashed yet the bootloader ill give a post related to this and esay way to do it

Thanks a ton for that link. I'm sorry to ask once again, but I'm very wary of possibly bricking my phone... so I must ask: Is your solution possible with 2.3.4? Or will the phone softbrick?
If you did the Over The Air (OTA) update to 2.3.4 then yes your phone will softbrick after flashing the bootloader. Re-enter fastboot and issue the unlock commands and everything will be fine when you reboot.

[Q] Rooting and Unlocking

I recently got my TF201 and soon as I got it home and turned on the WiFi, it updated. I put "Android System Info" app on it so I can see most of the system info, and I've ran the Unlock tool from Asus and have the Bootloader unlocked.
So my question now is, since when i boot the tablet, the top left says "Bootloader unlocked", can I flash CWM and then a rom, or do i still need to get root access and can I?

With your bootloader unlocked, you can install CWM without root access. See my response here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1585046). On the link in that thread, use the "non-rooted" method (fastboot) to flash CWM. Then you can install your ROM.
Confirmed, this is what I had to do.
Unlock, flash cwm (TOUCH VER. )
Then flashed Virtuolous newest rom.
It would be nice for a guide, or a tuturial for someone on a locked, and stock .21 rom for the prime

A guide/tutorial for a "locked & stock .21" is impossible since you need to unlock your bootloader.
And there are plenty of guides/tutorials on how to flash CWM onto your unlocked Prime.

It's quite possible...someone would just need to run a step by step including the unlock apk then move onto the steps of fastboot load of CWM. I agree that all the tutorials are there, but it requires a little hunting to piece them together.
This is where I went to unlock the Bootloader:
http://transformerprimeroot.com/tra...ow-to-unlock-bootloader-on-transformer-prime/
had to visit the page on the tablet cuz it wouldn't download otherwise
The question though, is once I install CWM and a ROM, do I have Root access, or can I only flash Pre-rooted roms?

Well yes, sort of. There are guides on how to unlock the Prime. Guides on how to flash CWM. And guides how to flash a custom ROM.
But the way the question was worded, it was how to flash to an unlocked, unrooted .21 Prime. Which you can't do. Flashing pre-supposes that you've unlocked it.

You have root access if the ROM you're installing is pre-rooted. If you install a ROM that is not pre-rooted you do not have root access. Whether or not you can root that ROM is another matter.
Why would you install a custom ROM not pre-rooted?
So call me blonde, dumb, or just flame me, but im sleep deprived on a daily basis so I'll ask a dumb question again.
Since I have my bootloader unlocked, all I need to do is flash the Touch CWM, and then a pre-rooted rom and I'm all set. No needing to gain straight up root access right here right now like i had to do with my EVO 4G just to be able to get into the Bootloader and put in the recovery

Correct. Just make sure to follow instructions to the letter. You'll need to flash the CWM using fastboot seeing as you do not have root.

Help I keep getting fail boot 2

I'm new to rooting phones I have a Moto Photon 4G. Ido have root access but when i try to boot into Android Recovery i get a message saying fail boot 2 entering RSD mode. So I'm not able to flash any roms to my phone. It's getting frustrating I have used google to find a solution but I'm a NOOB haha so I'm not really sure what I'm looking for. Please can anyone help?
Have you unlocked it? Can't do much without unlocking and installing a custom recovery.
If not, start here.
I'm pretty sure it's unlocked but how can I be sure. I used Root check basic and it confirmed I do have root accsess.
Root and unlocking are two separate processes. When you boot the phone, if you're unlocked, it will say unlocked in the upper left on the screen with the red m.

Now click your start menu and type "cmd", right click the cmd program and copy it to your unlock pack directory.
i'm not sure how to copy it.
Open the newly copied cmd.exe and type "fastboot oem unlock xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" WITHOUT THE " " MARKS and replaces the x's with your code that you got from the above step.
The links were helpful but some are outdated or my comp says they contain malware and wont allow me to proceed any further and yes qbking77 has very helpful videos

Once the cmd.exe comes up in your start menu, right click it and choose "copy." Then open your unlock pack directory (where you unzipped the unlock pack zip file) and right click, then choose "paste." Then double click the pasted cmd.exe. I'm not sure what has you stuck exactly.

You need to unlock your phone and flash CWM in order to put a custom rom on it. Rooting it is he easy stuff. If you flash a custom rom 99.5% of the time it is pre rooted so...
I have tried that method with no success. Thanks for your help
You have to use RSD-lite to flash the stock phone rom back onto your phone before you can unlock it.
I did the same thing you did when I first tried to load a custom rom, and many other people here have done the same thing as well, we have all gotten through it. It took me about 5 hours of trying to get everything straightened out, and the next day I was running overclocked CM7 with jokers kernel.

New Atrix 4G user needs help

Hi guys,
Just now got a new Atrix 4G off Amazon. It's an AT&T unlocked one. I am totally confused with all the processes posted here about unlocking the boot loader and stuff. I used to be a Defy user, but rooting and installing ROMs in Defy were a bit simpler than this.
Model - MB860
System - 4.5.141.MB860.ATT.en.US
Android version - 2.3.6
Kernel - 2.6.32.9
I want to flash either MIUI or Cyanogenmod. Should I unlock the bootloader first or root first. Can anybody help me out, pointing the right links? I couldn't find any guide for 2.3.6. and I don't want to brick my device.
Thanks a ton in advance
Wolvish
Whenever getting my Atrix replaced by Best Buy Mobile, I find these steps easier to follow in lesser words:
1. download ROM of choice and place it on the internal memory card
2. use automatic boot loader script
3. flash Romracer's recovery via command prompt
4. flash ROM
5. profit!
It's just easier to do this vs. rooting the phone/stock ROM first, finding that install-recovery.sh crap, and then doing the process to unlock the bootloader/flashing custom ROMs.

Read the threads you think don't cover 2.3.6. They have recent comments so you should assume people commenting might be on 2.3.6. I was on the same version as you and I'm unlocked and running CM10. The titles of the methods aren't updated but they still work (some of them) for yours. The threads god into amazing detail about how you do it, but make sure you read the comments too because those are more up to date than the original post. And if you say it's unlocked already then why would you unlock it again? If you boot up your phone and it says unlocked in the upper right corner when the motorola symbol is up then you are past the hard part. After that just get a custom recovery (Romracers) and flash your ROM

It does not show 'unlocked' during boot up. It's unlocked from AT&T (working with my SIM card). Isn't that different from a unlocked bootloader? So I should do that pudding thing next? BTW what is automatic boot loader script?
I read that downgrading from 4.5.141 is causing hardbrick, that's why I'm scared..

Yes any ROM. Read the sticky in the Atrix general forum. The noob guide one.

Yes, two completely different things.
AT&T has absolutely nothing to do with your bootloader. You need to deal with that yourself. And yes, you need pudding for that.
Can I use this method instead?

[Q] Relock bootloader

Hello,
is it possible to relock bootloader after ulocking it? I need it due to the warranty.
in short, No. please search the forum for details, as this is discussed.
i suggest you just try the luck sending the phone in and not mention anythong about the bootloader. of course should flash to stock rom if that still can be done

Why you want the warranty? Want to sell it later? Or did it already got any fault?

I think, he did not say he is sending to service center. He just said he needs it for warranty (in future).
See how smart these new pals are. May be we are all idiots to unlock it without giving a second thought. lolz
I do not have yet any fault, I just want to try alternative rom and I want to have way back to stock rom
My last phone had after 3 month of use some problem and I must return it. So I just want to know if it is possible
I thought that flashing the stock u-boot & x-boot will re-lock the bootloader.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=39761686&postcount=30
Maybe this should be in a sticky post somewhere. I have seen a few people ask about re-locking the bootloader.
If this works, we should start collecting u-boot & x-boot images.
There is no way to relock bootloader. Here is good post about bootloader and omap4430, it applies to L9s. In our case ics xloader ,uboot or both simply don't recognize that bootloader had been unlocked and it just appears locked.
I see. Thanks you.
So, you guys with unlocked bootloader, have no problem with fact that your devices have no warranty?
If you don't mention the unlocked bootloader to the customer service and your device has an unrooted stock ROM, there is only a few chance that they check the bootloader if it is for an hardware issue.
It only requires a little bit luck .
If i will make root by this:

With locked bootloader, then install cwm. May I then install cyanogenmod and if something goes wrong may i return to original stock rom together with warranty?

cwm requires unlocked bootloader
I think you need to install the "CWM Recovery" bootloader to flash a custom ROM. And with a locked bootloader, you can only have a bootloader signed by LG (not a "CWM Recovery" one).
However, you can try this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2095825
It is a "CWM Recovery" which is not directly placed inside the bootloader (instead, it adds a step on Android start). When I tried it on my P760 (when it still had a locked bootloader), it failed (but you can still try).

Actually that recovery will not work on jb,
Ok, that's why it failed for me.
Now, you have your answer, you must stay on ICS if you wish to keep your bootloader locked with CWM Recovery.
However, I would be curious to know what happens if a JB ROM (custom or stock) is installed through using this "locked bootloader CWM Recovery".
