Although 99.999999999999999% of the MicroSD Cards which are 32GB are Class 2, I noted that the 16GB which Verizon stocked in the Rezound is a Class 4. I suspect that means we should go no lower than Class 4.
Anyone know of a good and legitimate 32GB SD card which is Class 4 or even better? I note that Class 6 and Class 10 all tend to be brands I have never heard of (other than 1 by PNY).
Recommendations are appreciated.
Sandisk has a class 4 32gb micro on Amazon for $37. I just ordered mine, and it should be here in a few days. I'll let you know what I think of it when it gets here.

Yeah, the only real difference is the transfer time. If you're swapping a lot of data on a daily basis (like copies of your BluRay movies), then a higher class rating makes it go faster, but doesn't have any other effect on the performance of the phone, to my knowledge.

JD, there's a thread elsewhere on xda that talks about card speeds and basically recommends that the sweet spot is a 32g class 4 card. I have 3 of 'em (all bought at various sales just under $40). One is in my Rezound; one is in my tablet, and one is kept synced to the one in my phone via Microsoft Synctoy....because all cards ultimately fail.
i was reading somehwere that this may affect the speed of how videos write to the card if you save to card..is that true?
i'm gonna get a 32 gig as well, but should i go for class 4 or 6?

Yeah that 64 GB is a class 6. It's part of Sandisk's new mobile ultra cards. They make em in all sizes I believe.

That's a valid concern. I don't know the bitrate at which the camera records the various formats that it is capable of, but I'd say that a Class 4 is a safe bet in any case.
For a smartphone doing HD recording you want "atleast" a 4. Anything slower might get stuck in swapping. Personally I think it's one of those things with go with what you can afford/feel comfortable with. Though I'm also using a class 10 16GB since I can't stand being bogged down on transfers. I mean honestly, it's an LTE phone, not an HD camera. I don't need a 32gb, I stream everything.
Play back is a different story, a class 2 32gb works fine as long as the app does proper buffering. Though it will always load faster with a faster SD card.

i have class 4, 6, and 10 and honestly i cannot tell the difference under normal use. The only reason I got class 6 then upgraded to class 10 was for apps2sd on my nexus. I havnet done any formal tests, but from practical, every day use, no difference.
I do transfer files a lot from pc to phone so of course class 10 transfers them quicker. But normally you are not running many things off of SD, maybe music, which class 2 or 4 is good enough for.

I am still on the good old 4 GB card I bought a couple years ago. Fares pretty good for all day-to-day activities.
I just put in a class 6 16GB and I don't notice that big of a difference. I don't think you'd really notice a difference unless you were looking hard.
The higher the class of card, the faster the read/write speeds are. Things is, you will only see these speeds if you are transferring big files. If you are just putting MP3's and small videos on the card, you won't see much of a difference. Sequential Write speeds are significantly faster than Random Write speeds, but Sequential Read speeds vs Random Read speeds, there is not much difference.

Class Speed rating ONLY applies to WRITE speeds - has nothing to do with read speeds. Primarily designated for camcorders and other devices that need guaranteed minimum speed for writing data.
The camcorder on the phone doesn't require a specific card class, so spending money on higher speed cards is not a great idea. If you are copying movies from pc to sd regularly then it will save you a bit of time - that is all.

I bought the Lexmar 32gig class 10. I don't see a huge difference unless I'm loading up the card with a lot of files at once.
Yes its as fast as the Patriot from all the specs I've seen but unless you can truly afford the minor difference, just get a lower class.

FWIW.
My Kingston class 10 32GB card does not play nice with webtop2sd. However, I can format it with the system. I have not tried to write files to it but writing fat32 filesystems works for sure. It seems as if I can read from the card too. I see the folder created during the fat32 partition creation.
The issue I seem to have is that it cannot create extfs filesystems on the card using the phone. I can use gparted to make the filesystem, but then webtop2sd cannot read it.

Without a doubt. It has to do with sandisk class 2 and 4 cards providing random access to small amounts of data at speeds that are 10-100 times any other brand.
All the other brands are trying to make really big chunks of data write faster (think copying over movies faster) so I don't see anyone competing with sandisk here.
you didn't specifically mention what you were going to do. if in theory you plan on running cm7 on a sd card, then go with sandisk class 4. If you are only using it for storage and plan to run cm7 off of internal you can get a higher class rating for higher transfer feeds of large movies etc. unless you plan on running applications off of sd card where I think you would want the sandisk.

I have a Kingston class 10 16gb and a SanDisk class 4 32gb and the class 4 SanDisk trumps the Kingston everytime, except during transfers directly from a computer. The SanDisk benchmarks much better also

I saw 10 card in another thread (since deleted?) where someone posted about a sale on a 32GB class 10 card. Without researching the card I happily posted to the thread saying that class 10 sounded like a good idea as I like to write gigs and gigs of data (MP3s, videos) to the card for consumption. I didn't stop to think about random reads or writes nor did I consider other uses.
This same kind of info was then posted there. I removed my foot from my mouth and noticed that, yes, in most cases, normal people doing normal things (i.e. running apps, writing small files, etc.) will generally be more happy using a class 2, 4, or *maybe* 6 in their tablet. Save the class 10 for the high-def video camera that needs fast, sequential writes. Save the dough when getting a card for your tablet: do some research and pick the card best for you based off REAL-WORLD BENCHMARKS. (Save you some time - you generally will do just fine picking up a SandDisk card.)

The Amaze can handle a class 10 memory card. This would be preferred as it has the fastest read and write speed that I know of. I am currently using a 16GB class 6 SanDisk and it works really well.

My Amaze is on it's way to my door this Wednesday, and I too am on the hunt for a good class 10 micro SD card. I had a Patriot 32 GB ordered from Amazon (it had 4+ stars), but then I started reading specific user ratings. It almost looks as though there is a problem with quality/consistency with many of the 32GB class 10s. The Patriot, and several others, had quite a few recent users complain that their class 10 doesn't run any faster then their old class 2 or 4. (The complaints I tried to focused on are from users who had run speed tests and didn't just provide seat-of-the-pants analysis.) Admittedly, I was going for as cheap as I could (the Patriot was only $47), but I looked at several others and they had spotty speed comments as well.
Does anyone have specific knowledge or insight on this? Is it an issue with lower cost manufacturers whereby one card is great but the next can be dreadful. Is it the nature of the beast?
I appreciate your comments.

I could understand saying a class 10 isn't necessary, but to say it isn't the way to go, a class 4 is best doesn't make sense. Care to explain why?
UHS-1 Cards
I just read where UHS-1 class microSD's "were made for mobile devices". Something about being specifically designed to work with those operating systems. Anyone have experience with any of those? They're awfully expensive.
If you uses a class 2 SD card with a capacity of less than 16Gb and mostly uses it to transfer small files between your phone and PC - that would be sufficiency enough.
If you intend to use a bigger card, say, 32Gb or 64Gb and you are doing a lot of transferring MP3, movies, pictures ect ... especially if moving BIG files, say, more than 1 Gb each (e.g a full MP4 movie may take up to almost 2Gb)
OR
You are frequently backup your SDCard contains and moving them between PC and phone. You will appreciates the higher speed/class of your SDCard. Higher class means higher speed in reading and writting hence saving you a lot of time.
You will not notice much differences between a class 2 and a class 10 card when using it inside your phone though.
An SDCard speeding test's result will be differ from devices and that's exactly manufacturer's stated on their package/info, but, basically you got what you paid for. As we all know, Sandisk is the most expensive card out there and there is a reason for it, just do a little research and you'll know why. Sandisk classed their card at the minimum speed that their cards are capable of, whereas other manufacturer tend to class their card at the average speed that their cards capable of. Meaning a classs 10 Samsung/PNY/Patriot card may not capable of reaching the claimed speed (because, well, results are varies on devices) and the result maybe a little lower than claimed (I've tried Samsung class 10 and PNY class 10 test and the result is somewhere more or less than 9Gb/s writting).
Anyway, a class 2 16Gb Sandisk card is good enough for an average user whereas a higher class/capacity card will increase performances for those who demand more for their task/hobbies/usage
I would agree with the post above, right on the spot. I had a 8 gb class 4, 16 gb class 4, and now 32gb class 10. Did not visibly notice speed in my phone but did notice it when transferring files. You will only benefit when transferring larger files like 1 gb or more.
I only transfer my recorded videos, pictures, mp3 and that's it. I think i once transferred a movie or two.
What would have taken me 1 hr on 16 gb class 4 took me 20 - 30 min on my patriot 32 gb class 10. No problems on it since nov so far.

I have a class 4 card and the video is choppy when using HD recording. It can't write the larger amount of data fast enough.

anything over class 4 sacrafices random read/write speeds...meaning, just to write faster the data is more fragmented. Over time, the speed becomes slower and the table used to keep track of data must access parts of the fragments that are free...this reduces performance in higher class cards...if you look at Sandisk they their class two performs way above the minimum write speed, almost double...I always buy sandisk...nothing else...their quality is unmatched...they are the pioneers...A class 4 or class 6 sandisk would outperform many of the class 10's that people are buying right now.
Sometimes as Binary's card has, they lose integrity because of this reason...the index becomes messed up and the data becomes lost eaiser in higher class SD cards and lower quality SD cards...I believe Sandisk tries to minimize this even in their higher speed cards...

If you guys take a look at the bitrate of the 1080p video and also add the audio bit rate it doesn't even come close to being 2 MB/s write speed which is a class 2 SD card...the highest bitrate for video I got was 11182 (kilobits per second) = 1.36499023 megabytes per second...add the 127kbps of sound and you barely have 1.4 MB/s write speed needed for the HD video recorded by our amaze...hope this clears things up.

I have a SanDisk 32GB Class 4 MicroSDHC, works perfectly and doesnt slow down the phone.
I have watched 1080 video via MHL from the SD card.
Yes, 32GB is max. Open case so you can see what sdcard goes inside. No it doesnt make your phone slower, I think. But 32+16 GB is too much, so it might lagg a bit.

As long as the SD card has good enough random reads/writes it wont slow the system down at all (aka as long as its a good card its fine, aka the Scandisk ones are a safe bet, and actually the lower classes have better random read/writes).
The only thing is that if you have a lot of media the media scanner will take longer to finish (derr).

It's better to take some class 6 or class 10 card (but class10 is abit expensive and its almost no difference in most cases on SGS2).
The card will not slow your phone by itself, but a lot of files or media can slowdown mediascaner abit and increase battery consumption by mediascaner.
Just wanted to jump in with a reminder. The class rating of the card refers to the write speeds. So the class is irrelevant when you're talking about the performance of opening/reading files. The class is only relevant when writing to it.
That said, get a brandnamed card. I recommend Sandisk. I have a Class 2 32GB Sandisk that actually performs (from my testing) faster than a Class 4 rating.

That appears to be on a case-by-case basis depending on the card manufacturer.
From my own testing, my Class 2 32GB card can write at about 4MB/s (which is on par with a Class 4 card).
I also have a Class 10 8GB card which obviously can write faster than the Class 2.
But both of them are neck-and-neck when it comes to read speeds.

I have a Samsung 16gb class 10........ its the best card i've had... All i will say, pay a little more for a good brand, or your next thread you will be complaining about errors and sd card problems
For normal day to day usage in the phone there'd be very little difference in a class 4 or 10 card. However copying 32gb onto a class 4 card is a slow progress !! Spend the little extra and go class 10.

Didn't want to wait for one to arrive off eBay so a mate told me to go to Centrecom (Australia, Melbourne). Bought a class 10 for $50. Tests show write at between 10-11mb/s and read at between 18-20mb/s. Pretty happy.

I think I have a class 6. But yeah 32gb is the way to go if you have alot of music. I love mine.

i invested in a class 10 32gig'er and i would not have it anyother way...especially if you plan on using the HD Cam mod that doesnt compress pictures...absolutely beautiful pics and no lag between snapshots...as far as the video...ive recorded several 720p videos and they look pretty good as well, plus youll have hours and hours of video with even a few gigs...i have about 20gigs of music and some movies and tons of ruu and roms...with the 8gb that are left i can still record 4 hours of 720 p video...i prefer 720p to the 1080p option because 1080p records at 20 fps vs 30 fps for 720p, id much rather have smooth video...i also prefer the lower megapixel settings than the full 8 just because no ever needs to print a picture the size of a billboard...but none-the-less i couldnt imagine my rezound with out one, infact the only thing that kept me from buying a class 6 64 gig card was the difference in speed, it is so much more important than the size
I use a Class 4 32gb that came with my old Thunderbolt. Still using it with no issues whatsoever, and I play music and videos from it a lot.
I got a class 10 32GB on one of the amazon.com lightning deals one time for $31. It's blazing fast. Can't speak to slower ones. I used a class 6 16GB before that, which I loved.
To tell you the truth; I pretty much filled up my 32g. Got a 64g in it now.
I have a class 4 32gb also, haven't had any problems with it. I think the speed is about 8MB/sec IIRC.

I have a Class 6 64GB in right now, I filled the 32GB right up between music, movies, ROMs, and HD pics.
I just bought a 32gb PNY class 10 at best buy the other day. So far, all transfers from SD to computer are hitting about 15mbps. My original sd only hits around 7. Much better performance without the risk of 64 gb cards.

The speed class you choose should depend on how you plan to use the storage. If you're going to be writing/reading data constantly, then you'll benefit from a proper class 10 mSDHC. If you plan on filling it up once and adding to it occasionally, then a class 4 or 6 would be fine, IMO.

Does it make the phone itself faster during normal use (compared to a slower card), probably not. However, it makes transferring roms, nandroids and music/video much more bearable. In the end, it's up to you and your usage style to decide if the higher speed cards will be of benefit.
