[VIDEO] Google Currents App for Android on the HP Touchpad Tablet - TouchPad General

Google Currents is the new big thing from Google. It allows you to view your favorite news and media pages in a magazine style format. This runs great on Android tablets, especially the HP Touchpad! Check it out:
On the Android Market:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.google.android.apps.currents

Saw this on Android Central, and grabbed it right away.
Ill be honest, I've been kinda neglecting my TP lately. After loading Currents and getting it set up, I didn't want to put it down.
This feels like exactly what the tablets were meant for.
Go Google!

its fairly similar to feedly though. I think i may like currents better. We'll see once the new factor wears off.

If anyone is having FC's with it, fix permissions. That fixed it for me.

Seems like some people are having issues, while others are not. Be sure to post which ROM or build version you are running so we might be able to get a handle on this.

I'm on XRON B1.3 but moved to that from Alpha3 to see if it'd fix the problem I was having given that there have been some fixes in XRON since the latest core CM7. In both cases Currents locks up for me until I get the "Not responding. Wait/Force Close/Report" dialog. I can wait as many times as I want, but it doesn't come back. If I FC then it restarts Currents but it happens again shortly after browsing around.
I think I've seen the same behavior in Google Reader which I have installed to support the Android Pro Google Reader widget, though not nearly as frequently.
I've performed a completely clean reinstall (wipe system and data in addition to cache), and I've done the whole fix permissions and wipe Dalvik/cache partition thing repeatedly.
I'm really impressed by Currents (I also run it on my iPhone and Nook Color) and think it really makes the 10" tablet profile shine! I'm hoping someone can help me figure out why it's locking up frequently on the TP.

I had the force closing problems in alpha 3 but after I switched to alpha 2 everything seems to be working fine.
Sent from my HP Touchpad using XDA App

using cm7 a3 and i'm getting a lot of force closes recently. it seems to be sporadic since i didn't get them at until the other day. i'm patient with the force closes since i'm really just waiting for ICS.

I'm currently using alpha 2.1 and have not had a force close on this app yet.

seems to work perfectly for me

I'm getting FCs on Currents constantly to the point where its almost unuseable. I was alpha 2, in place upgrade to alpha 3. Everything else seems stable.

lag issues? i'm not familiar with blade buddy or that touch screen app for galaxy.
i haven't done anything *too* intensive on the phone but i have rarely experience any type of lag on this device. the lack of lagging has been very impressive to me.
if you are on the stock ROM and kernel and still experiecing lag, based on my personal experience, you might want to look into taking it back for an exchange as it could be a hardware issue.
if you don't experience the lag on a stock ROM and kernel, it might be whatever custom ROM or kernel you're using has an issue or bug. if you're on a custom ROM/kernel, also good to check in those specific threads to see if anybody else has reported a similar issue so the dev knows to look into it and resolve.
hope that helps!
Yea when I first got the phone the xda east major laggy and that's before I rooted so I guess I need to take it back then cuz this sucks...since I rooted its been flawless but couple days later the lag would come back and now my screen is becoming unresponsive at time for like 2-3 secs!!!

yea. as a last resort test, i'd flash everything back to stock and run it for a day. see if its still laggy. if it is still laggy, find good examples of when it lags so when you take it back, you can show the person how laggy it is through the examples.
hopefully you can swap out for a device w/no issues!

lol yea, given the unknown area rooting a device currently sits from a legal standpoint, i'd avoid anything related to rooting the device as a prime example.
ideally, if you're experiencing lag on the device, it will occur frequently in common tasks like making/ending a phone call or moving between text messages or moving between menus in the settings screen, etc. it makes the best case for having an issue when you're able to demonstrate it lags during normal routine operations.
hope that helps!

hah yea. working on mainly two small apps on the market, root check and flashimagegui. pondering publishing the completely stock ROM with root, busybox and some developer tools i use on my personal device (as I did publish this on the evo and it was decently popular - might be where you saw my name). also, trying to help out (give back) in the q&a boards when i can!
if you find some good common tasks which cause the device to lag, post them back here as people with the same or similar issues might find this thread through searching and it'll give them some rough benchmark to compare against.
i've yet to see this device lag through any common tasks i run. previous android phones ive had would experience lag so this device has definitely impressed me!

i put mine back to stock and my screen well freeze or lag couple times a day and i have to hit power button to put it to sleep and wake it back up to stop it from doing that and that last only a couple hours.

Significant intermittent lag

Lots of lag, especially with typing with swiftkey.
Has anyone experienced this? Does a factory reset help (I really don't see how it could)?

I had a big issue with lag then low memory warnings and the phone froze. A factory reset fixed it but I have no idea what caused it. I'm thinking some app cached too much memory

I went and read it. I wouldn't say what i'm experiencing is the same as what he described. Mine is fairly laggy when i type pretty fast with the keyboard or do some other random tasks. The whole thing isn't a giant lagfest though.
I've noticed the lag also. Especially in swiftkey x and ADW EX, it's pretty annoying. I'm about to return the rezound and get the nexus because this is disappointing. I'll try the factory reset anyway.

dude, why the HELL did you buy the rezound if you're just gonna mask up sense with ****ty ADW? like, seriously? why didn't you wait for the nexus in the first place if you just want to put some dumb launcher over it?
in every thread, you've been saying how you're returning it for a phone THAT HAS NO SPECIFIED RELEASE DATE. WE GET IT. do it already, go return your phone. don't need your negativity here.
either way, i get NO lag and i'm the fastest typer i know of all my friends with smartphones. i use the HTC keyboard and better keyboard.
also, i checked out the cache cleaner..works pretty well, you can clear ALL app cache, or just the cache of apps you never use. check it out, guys!

agree with everything you posted. I liked ADW but at least once a day it would get laggy. My wife and kids have sense on their phones and don't have lag. Curious what kind of apps this guy is running. That's a lot of RAM to use up.

I, as well as many others, don't have any problems with it.
Occasionally mine will act as if I lifted my finger and started a new word messing things up. However that doesn't happen very often.
My new problem is I flashed a new ROM that is based on ICS. When I re -run the installer it still tries pushing a Gingerbread version of Swype on the phone. At least I assume it is when the version is 3.6.XXX for the Swype apk.

The problem doesn't happen for ANYone who doesn't swype fast.
But it's happened with me on every Rezound I've played with on every working version of Swype.
I swype faster than most people full-keyboard type.
I've just resolved to Swyping slower. your Rezound will do it too, trust me.
If you have installed the update, I do believe it fixed the choppiness across the middle of the screen. I am not for sure though, but I know they did add support for higher resolution screens and ICS. My experience after one day has been very good as far as the choppiness is concerned. It seems as if I no longer have to worry about swyping fast and it screwing up.
I was having the same problem when I first installed it - but it seems to have 'fixed' itself as I have a full screen keyboard now...

After
This what one of the Swype devs on their board says in regard to the word splitting problem which he thinks is caused by refresh rates and polling:
We make polling adjustments for problems like this on production builds that we distribute to our OEM partners; however unfortunately it is not in the scope of the beta test to resolve these issues on devices they may crop up on. It may work in a later build, but I can't guarantee it, sorry. :-(

Had it on my work phone, bone stock 4.5.605.14 OTA ROM with lots of stuff disabled... It works, but it is very slow, laggy, and jittery, but aside from that, lots of functionality seems gone or more difficult to use, such as the Measure Lab add-in is gone that I used frequently, in fact all Lab add-ins are gone. I removed it and side-loaded version 6.14.4 back in and everything was wonderful again.
Jitters on new maps
Some, if not everyone, of us have seen the jumping of the screen in the new maps. I have found that if you use Expanded Desktop (if your ROM supports it) the map jumping goes away. Objects that overlay on the screen, like the search, or addresses, etc...seems to have a flutter, but the map itself does not jump around.
i thought of trying this because I noticed that when the screen jumps, it would move just about the that same amount as the size of the status bar. Other times the map would show through the status bar, so without the status bar, things work much better. Not a fix, but workaround if you do not want to downgrade.
Not sure if this is helpful to anyone with the mindset and skills to dig deeper, but wanted to share.
I'm on the latest Infection with that maps release. I had to pick up my wife's sister on my way home from work and she was in a part of town that I don't know so I had to use maps. It was jumping around like crazy. So I hit home button the went into developer settings and disables hw overlays. It instantly stopped jumping around during that session. At end though when I was going through menu it started acting weird. But the twenty minutes I was using the navigation it was fine. Oh and I heard about the hw overlay fix somewhere in the infection thread I believe.

just throwing this out there.............I have never done nightlies..........hmmmmmmm
isn't it kind of like being married? would this be waking up with same ROMan every morning? (anybody get it?)
do nightlies seem to get issues resolved on a quicker basis? not that I have had any yet with the 4.3's I have run so far. actually pretty impressed so far.
Depending on your style of life (and view of marriage) it's more like being married but waking up with a different sister every morning. Problems may be resolved faster on nightlys (or not truthfully) but new ones are likely to arrive just as quickly. Plus we
are warned not to send in bug reports because being nightlys they are supposed to have bugs. I never completely understood that because we seem to be an ideal audience from which to get feedback. But those seem
to be the rules.

really, waking up with a different sister? are you from the south?
you would think nightlies should be more stable. sounds like its a yes but no? which makes it a personal preference and what are you willing to tolerate or sacrifice? pretty much like everything else.
it makes things more sporting anyway. after a month on the most solid ROM my phone has ever been on, I was getting bored.
I just keep following the forums, trying different nightlys, and wait for that gem that comes along and everything works like a dream. Those gems are few and far between sometimes, but usually worth the wait. And so far, 10.2 is off to a good start!

Exactly. It's mostly a cure for boredom. Sort of like Southern sisters. Actually, putting it that way, the rule against complaining seems almost chivalrous, doesn't it?
