Ok, so here are some questions that I hope to get info on before I waste my time to find that it doesn't accomplish what I want.
I love the way Sense look on this phone. But it does chew up a lot of memory and battery power, even after a proper debloating.
So, how does it compare to Go Launcher in terms of CPU and battery usage? Has anyone actually done any tests to see if you can in fact improve performance and battery life by switching to another launcher?
Also, does running GO Launcher causer Sense to not run, or is it still loaded into memory and sitting there, so that I would then have both Sense and Go Launcher running and taking up memory and processing power, even if the only one you see and interact with is GO?
Or does installing Go and choosing that as the default launcher cause Sense to not load when the phone boots?
I don't want to move to something like Go, only to find that I now have two launchers residing in memory taking up resources.
Thoughts?

I prefer launcherpro, but regardless, they usually will run lighter than sense. You could always de-sense and then no worry about Rosie running in the background.

Can you expand on that? I am using Scott's debloat method(1.1) with a ton of stuff removed, but I did leave in Rosie... so could I just disable Rosie and then install Go Launcher and basically have it "de sensed"?
I am familiar and comfortable with Scott's method and like editing the batch file myself so that I can pick what I specifically want to freeze. Here is what I have so far:

What else would I need to add to that list, to effectively "de-sense" the phone, so that I can then run Go Launcher and not have two different launchers sitting in memory?
I would prefer to use this method, as it is easy to reverse and hard to mess things up. I think all I would have to do is perhaps add Rosie and a couple other items, reboot and then install Go? And if I want to go back, just uninstall Go and re-enable those items with Scott's script?
Check out the "desense" thread under the Development category. It's fantastic.

Ok, de-sensed it and am rebooting now. Go Launcher is installed, I did that prior to the de-sense in case the modified launcher wouldn't work, so I already have Go ready to... go, I guess? haha
Let's see how it looks and performs... Sense is very pretty, but if I can make the phone faster and smoother and get more battery life until ICS comes out in a few months, I think it is worth it...
One thing that de-sensing does is get rid of the screen-cap functionality. Oh well, I guess that is the price of cleaning the phone up. That feature will come back in ICS anyway...
I am running in the 450mb free area, and the system seems responsive. One thing I did notice is that my Antutu scores dropped by about 1,000 points... I was in the 5,850 range and am now barely breaking 4,900 points... Tried running 3 times, scores are consistently 1,000 or so lower than they were under Sense.
Thoughts?
Quadrant is about the same, hovering in the 2400 or so range...
Honestly until we can s-off, root and run an AOSP ROM then Sense will always run and hog resources. I truly look forward to one day running CM7, or even better CM9!
Sent via my HTC Rezound using XDA premium app.
True, but can you think of any reason why Antutu would drop 1,000 points from taking Sense off?
Putting it back on now, will retest and see if score jumps up.
I am gonna go back to Sense. The performance hit of removing it is too much. Also, when you "re-sense" it using that script, half the HTC widgets, like the calendar, don't come back.
Just had to do a hard reset to actually get things back to normal, and I will just use Scott's de-bloat script to freeze unwanted apps.
I use an app called Home Manager. I can easily switch between sense or go launcher. But what I like about it is. I can kill sense when using go launcher and vice versa so there is no memory running depending on which home replacement im using.

Are we sure about that? if you select Go Launcher, how do you know that Sense is not loaded into memory, using battery power or CPU cycles?
The way I understood it is that Sense loads when the phone boots, and just because you tell the phone to use Go Launcher or ADW, it doesn't actually disable or kick Sense out of memory.
Or am I wrong on that?

Shouldn't Care. People get so caught up in getting a high score, but at the end of the day, does the phone feel slow to you? Does it freeze? No? Then who cares.
My single core tbolt clocked at 1.5 Ghz was pulling quadrant scores over 3000 with muchless ram. The software was what made it happen. That and the kernel with the governor used.

I dunno.. im pure stock.. 210mb in use. Getting 15hrs+ battery life .
No debloating no freezing apps.. just pure stock sense.
Check my battery life thread.
I'm starting to think debloating and all that is a placibo effect. I don't doubt people see better performance but is it really better or does it just "seem" better. It's such a subjective issue. It's hard to get any empirical data.

I agree 100%.
All this talk of better battery life etc is total nonsense IMHO.
I am using ADWLauncher for now just because I like all the customization options, but my battery life hasn't changed from Sense.
The ONLY thing I have ever seen make a real difference in battery life is using a custom lean kernel and we can't do that yet.
~John
I know that benchmarks are to be taken with a grain of salt, but if you run the Antutu benchmark 5 times in a row and get a pretty consistent score, and then you switch from Sense to Go Launcher with no other changes, and rerun the tests 5 times and your scores plummet 1,000 or so, consistently (mainly in the CPU and integer sections), I have to think that there is something there.
I think that for now, I will stick with a de-bloated Sense and wait for ICS and by then hopefully they will have cracked the bootloader so that we can throw an ICS version of Cyanogen or something on it...
I installed adw ex immediately after purchase. Set it up the way I like it. Feels good. I also got rid of the HTC keyboard. Im used to stock gb keyboard.
Phone feels solid. Pretty nice. Speaker is very loud and clear.

I don't think so. Debloating gets apps like blockbuster out of the memory cache sitting there holding 15mb for no reason because I'll never use the app. I don't kill much of sense, but things like stocks, news and their widgets don't need to be loaded.
As far as sense vs other launchers, I've noticed it depends on what you use on the launcher, how many widgets etc you have on there.
I compared adw, launcher pro, sense and mobile shell 3d on the thunderbolt. ADW and launcher pro using twitter or facebook widgets used almost as much memory as mobile shell, 40mb vs about 50mb for mobile shell. And sense would use about 50-60mb for me.
On my rezound, sense is always around 50mb for me. Sense 3.5 seems smoother and less memory intensive.

The OP is very misleading over here. The CPU doesn't revert back to the default speed automatically when the charge is above the set level. An exit task needs to be configured for that to happen.
I figured this out because my phone started becoming extremely laggy and it has started to suddenly restart all by itself as the cpu speed was not enough.
So since I use Nova on my Nexus and my Moto G, tried to install into a remix instance.
While it installed, when I tried to start Nova, I thought I saw a pop-up that said "no support for 3rd party launchers".
It also seemed as if it ignored the play store setting to not add icons to the desktop in the default launcher. That's kind of annoying.
Is there another setting buried somewhere?

[email protected]:/ $ pm block com.android.launcher3
Package com.android.launcher3 new blocked state: true
[email protected]:/ $ am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN
Starting: Intent { act=android.intent.action.MAIN }
At this point, an activity selection dialog should pop up, which should list (among other things) the new launcher you installed. Select it, and tap "Always" and Bob's your Uncle.
If you want to re-enable the built in launcher, you can use the adb shell command
pm unblock com.android.launcher3

In remix os for PC this method does not work, I think you cannot use adb towards device you type on and on pre-installed emulator command 'block' is not found.
This works but I believe its disable/enable rather than block/unblock
Well, works-ish... you can switch to nova but there's no wallpaper and no G'now page.

Bummer ?
The gui way to do this would be to freeze Launcher and My Home with something like ROM Toolbox. Then run the Nova/Apex app and it'll become default - I think each launcher will behave differently - Apex seems to behaving properly for now, but the home button (circle) makes the launcher (- wallpaper) appear on top of running apps rather than minimising to 'desktop' == that's the downside of using non-stock launcher.
tl;dr freeze the stock laucher app(s) to use alternative, with stock circle button = home & minimise apps, with custom = launch home on top of apps.
Why not just use android-x86 builds instead if you just want a non-desktop interface

Remix + ZenUI The Perfect Combination
For me Remix is a great concept and makes large screen tablets with keyboards very usable. The notification pane, task bar and the ability to resize windows give Remix the edge on large screen devices. The killer is the lack of desktop widgets.
Having stumbled on the "no third party launcher" problem, I found this (and other) threads which helped no end. With a rooted device by far the simplest solution is to use a tool like TiBu (suggested in other posts) and just freeze Launcher 3 and My Desktop (or whatever that's called). After editing props to get wallpaper up and running, everything worked like a charm - a few extra tweaks to get rid of clashing gestures. Great!
I initially tried Nova - I am a long time user, but the one feature of Remix Launcher I like (no distinction between home and app drawer) is not available in Nova. Having recently acquired a new phone (UMI Super), I have been experimenting with new launchers and came across Zen UI. Nice minimalist launcher that suits my style of use very well. It has a "2 layer" and "1 layer" switch. 1 layer integrates the App Drawer into the home page. It also has smart folders and all sorts of other goodies. I had to tweak some stuff - turn off swipe down search gesture (part of Zen), set Zen to always start full screen. But nothing hard.
One comment - working out how to build folders in "1 layer" mode is a bit hit and miss. In the end I worked out to drag the app through the "app info" area then drop it on a folder to add the app to the folder. Do exactly the same to start a new folder, but drop the app on top of another app - both will then be in the folder.
Don't try and set up a layout in 2 plane mode expecting Zen to copy it as closely as it can when you switch to 1 plane. Zen just starts with a default layout again. Doh.
Now Remix and "1 Plane Zen" gives me the perfect combination. No separate app drawer and widgets on my home screen. And all the great features of Remix. Reaching for Nirvana...
I used the SD Maid technique, used it to freeze the default home app, etc. so far, so good. using Nova launcher Prime at the moment. live wallpaper and all.....
Try Line Launcher. Good oneand is free.
Had desktop like launcher then when I turned it on now it has launcher 3.
How can I get the old default back?

- adb pull, edit and push also fails, telling me I've got RO filesystem, but adb remount doesn't work and suggests that I run adb root first, which results in this lovely message:

the problem with " adb shell wm density (command line) " is that causes some issues with other apps, that's the only reason why i use Xposed Module name " App Settings v1.13 " you can change DPI (density) per app and doesn't effect other system or users apps. but glad works for you.

I noticed problems with this phones wifi but doesn't drop for me. The signal on wifi bounces up and down. The Qualcomm wifi soc on this phone tops out at 433Mbps max. Also noticed much weaker overall signal strength than many other similar devices. ZTE went cheap on the wifi and maybe gimped the antenna design.

I believe you haven't disabled system write protection many forums show this if it is your problem please post so others are aware when reading this. If this doesnt fix post too so can help further build.Prop edits should stay after reboot.

Thank you. That did the trick. I'm disappointed my google-fu didn't turn it up...
Also I used xposed to fix dialer and other apps to do per app dpi back to 640 I'm running 460 system dpi
rayman2k1 said:
It did. I ended up turning off write-protect on /system using the instruction at the link that @bhint15 provided, then editing the build.prop file, which is the preferred method of changing density throughout I believe

It indeed is. Does layout get messed up when you change DPI using this menthod? This is, honestly, my only reason for rooting.

I don't think that it does. My dialer looks fine and the notification bell (which I think is a ridiculous "feature" to begin with) is also not gigantic like it was with "wm density 538". I haven't installed xposed...
That sounds promising! After you using 538?

Yep. See attached
I'm jot sure if this is a bug or just a huawei thing. When pressing the recent apps button whilst already in an app, on any other phone I have had it brings up the current app first and allows you to scroll through. I have noticed on the mate 20 pro it opens to the 'middle' and app of however many you have open not the app you actually had open at first.
Is there any way to change this?
I think it is defaulting to the app before the one you are currently using? I think it's a good idea. If you are going to recent apps you are usually looking for the last app before the one you are in. If you are on the home screen you will get the last app you used.
I mean lets be honest, if you are in the messenger app for instance, and press recents, unless you want to kill the app, which you won't want to do most of the time, why would you need to see the current app you're already in?
It's a great example of forward thinking by Huawei., such as when you have auto rotate turned off and you turn your phone sideways, it shows a little rotate button on the corner of the navigation keys to let you rotate.
I've noticed that it if you've just unlocked the phone, the first time you press the recent apps button it will alway opens the current app. This is super annoying if you want to doubletap to switch the last app - all it does is flash the app switcher and then bring you back to your current app. Subsequent presses work correctly, but every time you lock and unlock the phone it resets.
What I find annoying is scrolling left to right on the most recent apps.
My G4 & Gemini (admittedly both on Android 7 so not sure if this is an Android 9 or Huawei "feature") both scroll top to bottom which is much more natural IMHO
Just uninstall the Huawei Launcher and everything is good!

Absolutely amazing - thanks!
I made a backup first by finding the launcher file in adb shell and then running the following commands:
Code:
adb pull /system/app/HwLauncher6/HwLauncher6.apk
/system/app/HwLauncher6/HwLauncher6.apk: 1 file pulled. 101.3 MB/s (6271901 bytes in 0.059s)
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.huawei.android.launcher
Success
Not only does the double tap for previous app command work every time, I'm back to pre-Pie style card multitasking which is a nice surprise.

Thanks for this! This also worked for me using Honor View 10. This is like the only thread I could find about the new recent apps garbage because it doesn't play well with Nova Launcher. Thanks again, working so far. My recents apps is now what it's supposed to be, reliable, consistent, and functional.
This method also prevents from apps being closed after using the camera for a while, proves that the phone is handicapped by awful software

Thanks for the tip! Out of curiosity, how would I put the stock launcher back? With
HTML:
adb install HwLauncher6.apk
i'm getting:
HTML:
adb: failed to install HwLauncher6.apk: Failure [INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES: Failed to collect certificates from /data/app/vmdl204504062.tmp/base.apk: /data/app/vmdl204504062.tmp/base.apk: File res/drawable-hdpi-v4/launcher_edit_bg_pressed.9.png in manifest does not exist]
Thanks.
EDIT: Nevermind, solved it:
HTML:
cmd package install-existing com.huawei.android.launcher
this method is not working on Emui 10. Recent apps not show after uninstall launcher. So sad.

I have the same problem, but on other user not. Have anyone know why is that?
Hi Guys,
I've made a video demonstrating how I accidentally enabled the Android Oreo style multitasking cards, pretty cool as I hate the new Android P style.
https://youtu.be/-gra_UFSBGE
the commands is:
adb shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.huawei.android.launcher
Ensure you have another launcher installed and enabled BEFORE removing the stock launcher.
Also note you will loose the stock gestures if you enable it, only the back command works.
So I had to overscan the screen to remove the Nav bar, as using immersive mode broke the lock screen.
Great! By the way, how can I revert back if I ever want to have the Huawei Launcher back?

Yer the only way to revert back is to reset the phone back to factory settings, unless you side load the APK file for the Huawei EMUI 9.0 Launcher (if you save a copy).
But no love lost for me, IMHO it's a crap launcher and multitasking interface...

Interesting!
I also dislike the way multitasking works.
Does doing this remove the gestures option that the Mate 20 Pro has?

You can grab a backup first with this command
Code:
adb pull /system/app/HwLauncher6/HwLauncher6.apk
I haven't tried to reinstall but it should just be an adb push instead.

When using the system gesture navigation mode, It breaks the swipe up and swipe up and hold from the bottom of the screen.
And unfortunately even using the edge gesture application to replace those, it won't allow it, it's somehow blocks it.
The back gestures work tho.
You can use the regular nav bar and then a gesture application and then swipe up works, but enabling immersive mode breaks the lock screen (shows up black with a delay to display the lock screen).
So I use and combination of system gesture mode, for the back command and full screen mode, and edge gestures for the rest (from the sides of the screen), however tap and tap and hold do work on the btm of the screen using edge gestures, just not swipe up as described above.
If anyone can get the swipe up to work that would be greatly appreciated.

You don't need to Uninstall important packages that you might want to re-enable later.
It is possible to just disable them, and keep the files available for easy re-enabling!
* FIRST OF ALL:
adb shell
* TO LIST ALL INSTALLED STUFF:
pm list packages | sort
* TO DISABLE A PACKAGE (for example the Huawei launcher):
pm disable-user --user 0 <Package Name>
* TO UNDO (re-enable):
pm enable --user 0 <Package Name>

You cannot push if you're not rooted
I like the new P multitasking. The old stack multitasking was nightmare. You were able only to switch to the previuos apps since all others were hidden behind. The EMUI 9 implementation is similar to the EMUI 4.1. The only thing that I miss from 4.1 is the long press action on the recent app. In the EMUI 9 task switcher you need to long press the icon which is too small.
The EMUI 4.1 task switcher is maybe the best Android stock switcher.

This is the best answer. My phone's lag just gone.
You should start a new thread to tell others. Even XDA homepage shows uninstalling option.
can someone who has uninstalled the launcher do a quick check for me?
please install the newest pixe launcher or 1 of the newest pie launchers and set the navbar to the keys (no gestures), give the new launcher all permissens that it wants and reboot.
i would like to know if the new nav gestures and recents overview will kick in and work
which launcher do you mean, do you have link? I had installed the Google Pixel Launcher, but it cannot be set as default launcher, cause it crashes.

No I did not uninstall it, I don't want to, I had it disabled via adb shell, but now I have re-enabled it cause I'm trying the horizontal resent app-view.

I was having the same issue. You need to manually add permissions in the apps settings, then set the Pixel Launcher as your default and it won't crash.
So is this specific to Mate 20 pro? I'd like to try this on my Honor 8x.
I wish we could do this without breaking the gestures, I love them as they are more intuitive and donde waste any space like the nav bar did,
I wish Huawei copied Xiaomi's MIUI recents UI for EMUI 10, Xiaomi's implementation is the very best one out there, better than stock, even better than the old LP-Oreo recents

Download the app fluid N.G on the store
Sent from my HUAWEI LYA-L29 using XDA Labs
It looks nice, however, my experience so far with these third party apps is that they end up turning into battery and RAM hogging bottlenecks, I don't know if it is the case with his one.
Just FYI
You can reinstall the launcher with this command, as the apk is actually still in the phones memory...
adb shell cmd package install-existing com.huawei.android.launcher
Also you can block background usage of the Home launcher if you're using an alternative one with this command;
adb shell cmd appops set com.huawei.android.launcher RUN_IN_BACKGROUND ignore
