[Q] Does Motorola Razr has Carrier IQ? - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hi Everyone! How is it going? Well i finally decided for the Motorola Razr instead of Samsung Galaxy S2, i don't care too much about Custom ROMs, Customs Kernels and whatever .. I choosed the Razr because of it's hardware quality desing is better, when i held SGS2 in my hand it felt too light and made with cheap and fragile plastic wich makes me wonder how long would it be alive without crack it or break it.. I read that Razr is more resistant and rugged instead of sgs2.. so i ordered mine, i'm getting it next week. A little detail that worries me a bit is the famous Carrier IQ Software, does it has carrier iq? I'm getting the international GSM Version XT910, not the CDMA version. It worries me because i'd like to use my visa and mastercard credit cards for shopping directly from the phone. Thanks!

Nope. No carrier IQ here. Moto Razr with Verizon.

As far as I know it's not and I dont see it listed in my apps. I thought the iPhone had it though.

Phew, i was getting paranoic thinking that my carrier could have my credit cards numbers.. ¬¬ Is it a Good Phone for you guys? What do you think about it? Is it really what it looks like or it is a bit frustrating and dissapointing.. ? I'm waiting for mine.. Hope it's well made u.u Thanks for your fast replies!

It doesn't show up in the apps. It's hidden. It can be detected tho.

The Verizon version of the phone DOES NOT have CIQ, VZW is the only carrier that doesn't use it. I ran the lookout checker app on my re-unrooted phone with all apps and its not there.

i don't think that Motorola cooperates with Carrier IQ.. none of their devices has CIQ software. at least i guess. haven't seen it on Milestone neither on Flipout and neither on Motorola RAZR (EU version).
if you're not sure anyway, you can easily find out by installing Carrier IQ Detector or if you're advanced with android, you can check by using adb logcat.

Good to know.

Verizon has officially announced that none of their phones have Carrier IQ. So if it's on Verizon, it doesn't have Carrier IQ installed.

The Photon doesn't have it, never has.
Another good reason to root and use custom ROMs

Actually, I believe that stock Photon does have it. Lookout Security has a Carrier IQ detector in the marketplace. I found Carrier IQ on my stock photon. I installed cybik's CM7 and voila, no more Carrier IQ.
I have 3 issues here, #1. Carrier IQ and Sprint are clearly lying and this guy proved it. Maybe yes, they only use the network part of it, but they are clearly collecting everything else.
#2 No one ever asked me? If you asked me, I could make a choice (I likely would not, but still.)
#2. I have all my banking information that I access and other passwords from my Photon. So any hacker with 1/2 a brain could collect the same file and act as if he were me?

the photon doesnt have any known version of ciq on it... seriously guys im friends with k0nane... i had him check it out... not saying there isnt some new ****.. but all current forms of ciq that are documented are not here
1) cant always believe what you see.. i mean honetsly i dont know treve.. but as a dev i respect what hes done.. but he isnt playing on alevel feild IMO.. he is using a rooted phone and he isnt looking thru ciq's logs its adb logcat which... logs everything
#2 part one P i know im sorry im a jerk) you signed sprints contract right? did you really read all the terms of service? i sure as hell didnt but how much you wanna bet there is something in teh contract that says they can do that? :O
#2 part 2 there is only 2 ways this is gunna happen.. someone has a cell tower mocked up to intercept your cell signal and catch teh packets as they pass... or.. someone has physical access to your phone... at which point its moot because from what im guessing you save all your passwords etc?

Are you using a custom ROM? Unless you are on stock, you probably won't see it. The stock photon, does in fact have CIQ on it.
how about you go through init.rc and teh smali in services.jar and tell me that
trustgo mobile security cannot find it.
lookout says i do not have it
voovoo carrier iq detector says no
kinetoo carrier detector says NOT DETECTED
anti-ciq says " no needs to protect your phone"
ciq process killer says its not active
carrier iq cleaner told me congratulations your device does not have carrier iq
for ****s sake people.... take teh tinfoil off your head.. no one is gunna steal your gummy bears...
P.S these are all apps freely available on the market...
if you really want ill take teh time and learn how to make an app it will stop carrier iq on ths photon and atrix. but cuz of the time needed ill be charging 47 bucks per download let me know i i have any interested buyers...

Nope, this was and still is the stock ROM. Why don't you pay attention to what Shabby says, unless you're trying to troll.
Stock Photon does not have carrier IQ.
There is a small chance there might be some really new version of CIQ that nobody knows about, but no currently known versions of CIQ exist on a stock Photon.
@Shabby and your original post.
1. You are NOT a jerk. Right or wrong, everyone here has opinions. We collect them and try to get a solution to fix something, learn something, make something easier or look better. This does not make you a jerk.
#2 Part one: You are ALMOST correct. When I originally got Sprint, I did not read the contract. I signed it and grabbed the phone. When I got Evo, I did read the ENTIRE contract (Unlimited Data has it's limitations, such as using Photon as web server, streaming Porn website........)
#2 Part two: What about the phone hacking scandal in the UK? would that not go against what you stated? I mentione it because it's in the news today.
gsm has had a major exploit for a long time. ive yet to hear of anyone doing taht with cdma.. not to say that it cant happen... but really you have a much better chance of being phished... the odds that someone is smart enough to be able to build a fake tower, program it, collect your info and then use it (without being caught) in your local area (im talking within a mile of you at most)... just seems rather unlikley ya know?
and im sure in teh contract or in teh terms of service you agree to "network services" which can and do include everything we could possibly imagine :/
as for the jerk bit it was more of a reference that you had 2 2's in your first post and skipped #3
just read up on the uk stuff sounds like it was a hack done on the voicemail of a little girl who went missing... my guess is that the "media" doesnt understand teh difference between hacking a phone and dialing it and pressing every combination to get into her voicemail....
DAMM YOU JERK!!!!
I assume your GSM comment is because GSM is Global, so it has a much larger window for hackers. South Korea has WCDMA, but our CDMA cannot use it (Well, my Evo did not work!)
I did read the entire contract, have to admit, I did not understand 99.999999% of it. Just the what you can and cannot do with unlimted data.
As for the UK thing, now thinking, you are again correct. Anyone with a little time on their hands could get into your voicemail.
gsm has had a lot of flaws in it for a long time
also those gsm bastards got you again.. wcdma is a gsm technoloy cdma and cdma2000 are the ones most commonly used over here for "cdma"
Back on Topic, I would really like to see where this goes, I have personal reasons. Remember Apple got caught with their pants down and it dropped off. Now Carrier IQ.................
I have been in IT for over 25 years. All it takes is one bad Computer Operator at Sprint..............Granted, the chances of one of them getting MY data, looking at my Bank of America logon and PW, PowerBall or MegaMillion is better.
good to know and a valid reason to root root my phone!
Just tested my stock photon, no carrier IQ. Heres the proof i am rooted but i doubt that has anything to do with it

We might finally have won, (bootloader)

I just wanted to say, I think our hard work with petitions and complaints along with the google buyout has finally turned the tables. We have possibly won the bootloader battle.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/26/motorola-to-allow-bootloader-unlocking-from-photon-q-4g-lte-on/
The photon Q will come out in august and be the first unlockable but the RAZR / MAXX will be unlockable soon after. This is amazing news I think, I have a feeling it has to do with the encription being nearly cracked and they decided to reduce the vulnreability and make it unlockable through them. And well admit it, we *****ed a lot about this.
Good news, but wait unlock before proclame victory
I doubt they'll allow older versions/handsets to unlock their bootloaders. Also you have to remember that Photon is releasing on Sprint so it is probably a deal they have made with the network thus allowing them to carry through with this. Regardless, I was hoping Motorola would live up to their targets of unlocking bootloaders and pushing the ICS updates out in their predicted timeframe. But looking at where we are now, I know well enough to take their announcements as a grain of sand and sadly this will be my first and last Motorola based Android device.
Beat me to it... I may not have my beloved RAZR anymore, but I wanted to share too...

They've ready said they have no intention of unlocking past devices. We have still lost, Verizon will still never allow another unlocked device on their network. The GNex is the last.

isn't the carrier unimportant if there's at least the retail version unlockable?
You would be correct, but Moto doesn't subsidize their products, most people won't spend $750-500 on a phone when they could get it for $200.

If you buy your phone from Moto without the discount that you get from carriers, you would be paying 500 USD extra just to get a version that's unlockable, which is crazy for most people. Why would you buy a phone for 700 USD that you could get for 200 USD?
They must be fool if they think that I will buy another moto phone just because of a "killer feature" like the unlocked bootloader... They screwed it with the Razr (and others) already and I will not support such company who thinks that everything must be as they said...-thats not what I am paying for. Thats the reason why I don't own an iphone and motorola's phones are next on this list...

Motorola Xoom is GED
Just wanted to react to the topic name - no we didn't won but we probably completly lost it all because if motorola will provide unlocked bootloader for the upcoming phones there will be no reason for them to unlock old phones as its reasonable that they would want to sell as many new phones as possible and this "new feature" will help them...
If anyone can read the RAZR WILL be unlocked shortly after the new phone is released. This is because the DROID RAZR and DROID RAZR maxx are very popular phones. And Verizon doesn't want anyone complaining about the unlocked bootloader. So just get your panties out of a bunch and wait patiently until after August.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda app-developers app
Think about it a lot of people are still on their 2 year contract so people are not gonna want to pay full retail just to get an unlocked bootloader when they just got a new phone. If Verizon was smart they would give it to relatively new phones so customers come upgrading time will want a new phone. And won't jump ship to a new carrier.

People please Read the Whole article, moto confirmed they will be unlocking the RAZR/MAXX. They are going to start with a new unlockable device, then start unlocking some older devices. The razr is specificly listed others are unlisted but will be unlocked too. Remember that Google now owns motorola and is starting to call the shots, ICS is almost stock now on our razr except a few changes. (and good ones not crappy ones) Motorola is going back to its google roots the OG Droid came from.

Ah, if only the S4 had root. If this keeps happening, I definitely need to find another phone for VZW that's been unlocked/rooted.

This might worked for me when I was having issues with my SIM. Take the SIM and and use an eraser to lightly rub off the wax that's on the metal part of the SIM. I did that and have had no issues since. Hope that helps. Also, those work work because they're specifically gsm models. U need the one directly from HTC to get it to work on Verizon.

I ended up putting tape on the back of the sim to make it thicker. Almost taped it down, but that could cause problems. I just hate to keep removing my otterbox to replace the sim, it's getting loose because of it. Tempted to just go into VZW and make a big deal with the fact that I went through 3 of them even though I didn't and get them to give me the S4. Not sure if it would ever work. And either way, I'd have to wait until the S4 gains root.

FYI the S4 has root/unlocked bootloader. However the release of said exploit has been delayed until Verizon's S4 has had a chance to get out to customers to allow everyone a chance to utilize the exploit before it gets packed much like the scenario we (DNA owners) are experiencing.

Any of the Galaxy s4? They will be fully unlocked (for a short time at minimum) and unless the carriers locked them down they should stay that way. Or do you mean the DNA become fully unlocked?
I do (have done for nearly 10 years) Microsoft .NET development, but have little experience with Android development. However based upon what I've heard it at this time it seems unlikely that there will be an unlock (outside of JTAG/Riffbox based) at all. I don't mean to be pessimistic but it looks like quite a challenge that the devs are facing. Being a DNA owner I hope that I am mistaken as I quite dislike not having root

Hmm, what on earth is with the carriers locking them down? It's not like they ACTUALLY lose anything by having them unlocked.
As for the HTC One on VZW. I checked with HTC. The only bands that don't match up are the 3G bands. Then again, does VZW even have GSM bands for 2g? I just compared the bands to the DNA.

VZW uses a different LTE band than T-Mobile or AT&T. Also VZW doesn't use any GSM they are a CDMA carrier. This is why when connected to 3G you can't make use data while making a voice call (CDMA limitation). When connected to 3G your normally connected EVDO (i think) for data and CDMA for voice. The bands differ when falling back to 2g/1g but they are still CDMA.
Generally the reason (supposedly) the carrier locks the bootloader etc down is that it increases the ability/likelihood that a user will brick or otherwise damage the phone. This generates increased costs for the carrier with warranty work/returns. Also there is the potential there for a user to load something that has malicious code on their phone which could possibly cause damage to the carriers network etc.
If you really want an unlocked phone and don't mind paying the full price developer versions of most phones are available. They are fully unlocked, and for example you can get a dev HTC one with 64gb memory for 650$. However it is not compatible with VZW if I remember correctly.

No clue what I want to do at this point. All I know is I can't switch providers and that the apps I use for work require root since I work with network monitoring.

I'm going to get either an s4 or a s4 Mega depending on the features it brings. HTC one has too small screen size. Haven't ordered JTAG because almost everyone I see that has had that done has at least a broken tab on the case from prying it open/close. That kind of stuff bugs me to no end, and I'm going crazy without root access. So my time with the DNA is probably going to end in the next month or so.

I'll buy the s4 outright for the 650 or so. Then sell the DNA on craigslist or swappa and hopefully get around 400$. If your at the 6 month mark your not getting them to trade it out. Your other option is to look for someone selling an s4 on craigslist that can't afford it or needs the money.

No matter how we do it, it's a lot of money. Worse to worse. Buy S4, play with it, hate it, resell it.

A few words for my fellow Photoners

My contract with Sprint is going to be up soon and, sadly, I am moving on to a different device. Although my Photon was a great device the unfulfilled promises from Moto/Sprint and lack of a trouble free ROM above Gingerbread leaves me no other suitable option but to upgrade. Tie that to the fact that I have moved to an area where Sprint service barely exists and my P4G's fate is sealed.
That said, everyone here in the Photon forums will be missed. There are some very talented dev's here that I owe a great amount of Thanks to. Loki, th3bill, jokersax and so many others made it possible to unlock much of my device's potential. If only Moto would have coughed up what they promised the Photon would have truly been a formitable device for anyone to reckon with.
Anyone have suggestions on the best place to list a near mint Photon4G with an unlockable bootloader? I'm sure it could possibly be of some use to a devloper somewhere.
(Mods please don't delete, I am not trying to sell here. Just want to know the best place to list.)

Sounds like a good deal. For me I'm going to Big Red, Sprint has no local service here (only roaming) and everyone else is either more $$ or bad service (did a lot of research). So I gave in and am getting the GS4.
The Moto X will be available soon on Verizon.

I switched to ATT for the same reasons you're talking about Verizon. I also got the S4 and I LOVE it. It has the best battery life of any phone I have ever had, bar none. I bought two extra batteries and a charger, as I always do when I get a new phone, it's been two months now, and I have yet to use them. One day I got the battery down to 17%, but otherwise, never below 30%, and I do use the phone a lot. I don't miss my Moto phones at all. Never again. Regarding selling your phone, I think they promote swappa around here. You could always use craigslist too. But if you're in a position to consider it, as I was, think about donating to one of the developers. I donated my phone and honestly hope some good has come of it.

For me, I cannot think of a phone I want LESS than this moto phone. They used to have better radios but I don't think that's true anymore. My S4 works everywhere I've needed it. No dropped calls, 4G service that's much better than Sprints service, and we had 4G LTE here in Houston. Step away from the moto addiction, you won't be sorry you did. There is GOOD life without moto, and Punit Soni doesn't need your buisness, trust me on that. That guy has deluded himself about his honesty and ethics, to the point that he doesn't even realize he talks out of both sides of his mouth.
I agree with the sentiments expressed on the development here, and the community that was built. It was the friendliest, most helpful group of people I'd ever been around bar none. I miss that a lot, but I haven't missed the photon for 5 minutes. Well, I kind of missed it while I used the Galaxy Nexus I bought off ebay for six months, that thing had horrible battery life, but otherwise was an equivalent phone. Since I've had the S4, not missed the photon for a minute.
Thanks retailguy, you're the second person that has told me good things about the GS4. Hopefully I'll get the MDK build instead of ME7 when I pick it up this week.
I'm ditching smartphones completely and moving to the Omate TrueSmart. If I'm going to loose Ubuntu for Android functionality I see no reason for me to waste my money on a smartphone.

Most likely. Motorola has built a website to unlock the bootloader. But beware, the moment you use it, your warranty will be voided.

Truthfully, I don't know which build I even have. Other than access to wireless tethering, and removing the ATT bloat, I see no reason to even root the phone. It's THAT good.

Moto may have built the site but I have read in many places that VZW does not support or allow unlockable BL's from the mfg's.

Yep, you're right. Not having Verizon, I forgot about that. Unless someone finds an exploit, the bootloader will stay locked. And considering that no one has found an exploit for the Photon, it's doubtful that anyone will find one for the X. Personally, I believe that's why Motorola never unlocked the photon bootloader, it was their unofficial "test" to see if the community could defeat their security. But, I've also been accused of being a bit paranoid too.
You must be talking about the Photon Q. I remember reading that before it was released. The Photon 4G was put out with an unlockable bootloader. That was the reason I picked one up. Mine runs CM10.2. I really like the features that Cyanogenmod puts into their ROMs. That's why I'm hoping to get the MDK build. If I do CM will be on my GS4 in a matter of hours.
If you are on Verizon or AT&T, expect every phone you buy to be locked down tighter than Fort Knox. To the people looking for the MDK build of the S4, YOU WILL NOT FIND IT. YOUR PHONE WILL BE PERMALOCKED OOB. The turnover was brutally fast, and 99.9% of all new units after the OTA were shipped with ME7 pre-installed. That's for both carriers. Unless you buy used or can verify that it wasn't updated. My friend has the AT&T one, and I keep telling him that I feel his pain haha.

There is going to be a Verizon developer edition Moto X with an unlocked bootloader out of the box.

Motorola pushed an update that locked the bootloader. Anyone who had 2.3.4 and accepted that update got a present of a locked bootloader that no one has been able to defeat. My understanding is if you got 2.3.5 from the factory you did not have this problem. Only those who participated in the soak test have locked bootloaders.
You must have a factory 2.3.5 phone, or one that originally had 2.3.4 and was not updated as part of the soak test.

Wow. This is surprising and disappointing, but truthfully, I haven't even thought about unlocking the bootloader on this phone. The stock rom does everything I want it to do, and since it's the most popular Samsung phone out there , it'll probably be supported longer than I care to use it. It will affect what I buy next time, the whole locked bootloader really ticks me off, but c'est la vie. I will survive. At least they didn't lock it during a soak test and take functionality away from me. I stupidly didn't investigate before I bought the phone. Won't do that again...

Could be. My understanding is if you have 2.3.4 you can unlock. If you have 2.3.5 you cannot unlock, regardless of how you got it. Root is still obtainable either way.

[Q] KitKat

Any hope for someone porting over KitKat to our device?
i guess the same people which care about porting 4.3 to the evo will go on and port it, somehow.
if they are at the same pace as for 4.3, in less then a month there should be usable ROMS.
really looking forward to kitkat from our devs
I had to flash back ICS on my Evo3D today. So slow and disappointing...

WHY ?
I'd like to see how 4.4 works on older hardware. I still have my evo 3D and it'll be interesting to mess with it on there.

SlimRoms are working on SlimKat for the GNex.
 @johnnyslt
can you port this to the evo?
There isn't a lot of difference between jb and kitkat, I flashed a kitkat ROM on my moto today, its all minor updates and most of the apps from kitkat work on jb anyways. I hate the stick launcher, who wants Google search bar on every screen, not me. Overall speed was exactly the same as jb .

CDMA?
I see gsm has 4.4 , but is anyone working on a port for the cdma version?
A bit offtopic but I couldn't hold off saying it, when do people make questions about CDMA devices and their support (generaly) I'm always like, Why the hell people buy CDMA devices? Why? Why do people give in into carriers locking them by buying something that looks like a phone but it's actualy a lock between their hands, their rights, their pocket and their carrier which grants them to violate you in many ways? They really don't understand that paying nothing or little for a device that actually costs something else in the unlocked GSM version comes with a catch and first of all it means that you don't actualy own the device? When is this USA CDMA Carrier ballooney going to explode? People don't get that what they have in their hands is not a phone, it's an instrument that carriers will use against you, ah, and on top of that, since you haven't paid for it, ofcourse you don't own it.

Some people have TERRIBLE tmobile coverage but can't afford ATT? Where do you go? -> Sprint MNVO or Virgin/Boost mobile. Can afford ATT but dont want tmobile budget network? You go to Verizon. It would be nice if our governments forced ALL carriers to not tie simcards to specific phones but that isn't the case. We can't really do anything about that unless everyone in the US does a boycott or something(which is unlikely). I mean most of us here probably KNOW the downsides to CDMA but we have don't want to inconvenience our self with worse coverage/increased price for our specific needs/budget just to have a phone that takes a stupid sim card LOL. I mean its not that serious in the scheme of things to be worried about...
I own mine. Paid $150 over a year ago.
I pay $25 a month for a phone, with WiMAX coverage btw.
I don't see it getting a whole lot better.
When I don't want to use this phone anymore I will sell it, or throw it in a draw....I feel I have definitely gotten what I paid for and then some....

It's easy, this is what I would do. If I really HAD to go on a CDMA network, I would never buy a phone that the carrier would even have the interest to use it as it does against me, so I'd get a cheap feature phone, and grab a smarthphone on a GSM network that offers nice prices and pay for it cash. I don't think it's really such a big deal that people make it over there, been in the US and in different states and I had anything else than bad reception. If you show that you don't like something a company does they will eventualy be forced to change it, and I don't really see you losing really anything at all. The first thing is also NOT to give in to that idea-balloney that just because a company has a premium device for a funny price or for free with a X year contract thinking after that you actualy own the device. Oh dear, no, you don't, that's the catch, these companies are not stupids.
