So I had bought this phone off ebay and when I got it today I tried to turn it on, but nothing happened.
I then plugged the phone in and tried powering it on and still nothing. I tried charging the battery and left it alone for an hour and afterwards the result is the same. Basically when I plug in the phone to the charger, the phone's screen will flash a battery icon as if its going to charge for a split second and then go blank. And then it will flash the battery icon again and then go blank again and it will go on like this for a couple of minutes until the screen finally stays blank.
So as I said even though I leave the phone to charge for a while, it still won't turn on and the only result seems to be that the phone gets warm near the camera. Also I tried to see if download mode works and pressed both volume buttons and I get a brief flash of some words. After doing it for several times I saw it said 'Low battery, cannot download' all in red.
I searched the forum and tried leaving the battery out for a while and also putting it in the fridge to see if anything would happen but nothing. So can anyone help? Is it just the battery?
Could be the battery - if you are on good terms with a local ATT store, try going there and asking if you can borrow a battery from their demo device to see if yours will power up. That's the best cheap way I can think of to rule that out.
Other possibility is a bad USB port. My first device developed a failure at about 2 months - I'm actually on day 5 with my warranty replacement. There is another member here, Moustro I think, who also may have a bad USB port. He and I were wondering if perhaps there was a bad batch out there. I'm not sure what ATT's warranty policy is for items re-sold on eBay, but might be worth checking out...
yeah that does sound like it could be the battery boot loop, take some photos of the battery to see if it is the oem... if it is the oem try a stand alone chager

I live in Canada don't think I'd get much help from AT&T probably.
Also the battery is the original one and not a replacement. I left it unplugged for a few hours and just now plugged it back in and its the same battery icon flashing for a couple of minutes and then blank screen. No charging whatsoever. I tried different outlets and different USB ports on my notebook and its all the same.
I also have an Infuse and charging for that every by every method is just fine so its my SII that's messed up.
If it's any condolence to you, I just bought a brand new GS2 from the ATT store today. The battery was semi-charged when I got it, and when it ran out, I plugged it in and got the same thing you did. Battery is flashing, cannot power it on, even plugged in. I also got the red "Low battery, cannot download".
I spent the better part of 4 hours reloading my apps and email addys, and everything else to get my phone up and running, and now this.
I am going back to the ATT store tomorrow and requesting a different brand new one.
This is my 2nd GS2, because I destroyed my first one in an accident.
Just as dandrumheller was saying. I had simimiar issues where the phone battery would blink on and off even if the charger was plugged in or not while the phone was powered off. The only way I could get my phone to boot to prepare it for warranty exchange was to flash a rom through Odin. But if you can't get it into download mode this wouldn't work.
My suggestion would be to use a different battery. That would let you know if its a hardware issue or bad battery.

I was able to to get it to power on last night with what little battery was left. I then plugged it into the USB of my Mac, rather than the charging wart. When I awoke this AM, I have a fully charged battery, and a working phone. I will let the battery run out again completely today and see what happens.

I would not let it completely run out. Our batteries don't like that. Don't go below 25 percent. I'm glad you got it working. I know you're relieved.

Call samsung and see if they will honor the warranty? Don't know their rules, but in another thread someone suggested that sale of the phone does not void the warranty.

For what its worth I am able to enter download with NO battery. In fact I ONLY do it without a battery. I just hold both volume buttons and plug in the USB to my computer while not pressing anything else. Without battery.
Thought the OP said he couldn't enter download.... so if that doesn't throw it in download it's more than just battery.

I tried this and it worked...
At a last resort, i put the battery on nexus to see if it will charge and DAMN !! it did,, so the battery was not the issue...so i grab a swab with little alcohol then clean the terminals on the battery and the spring connectors on the phone... and voila !!! started charging and keeps working perfectly.
It worked for me, hopefully it will work for you guys.

Flashing on for a sec then flashing off, buttons flashed too. Phone got hot around the battery. Couldn't have described the problem better
Took some alcohol, cleaned the contacts for the USB connector, cleaned the battery contacts, and booyah, got the charging symbol again! Problem was, I didn't use the phone for a month, it rode around in the front pocket of my laptop bag, and apparently got the contacts dirty. A little toothpick and q-tip fun later, and my phone started charging again. Thanks -

Really? I've had mostly HTC phones and we could run them down pretty low.. I've been running mine down past 10 and it's been fine.. stock battery.
I had the same problem as op. My last resort was to cut the micro usb end of a spare cable and connected it to the (+) and (-) on the phone itself. since the phone booted up, i knew it was the battery. Next, i did the same thing but (+) and (-) on the battery itself while connected to a computer. i held it in place for about 10 seconds. put the battery back in the phone and it started charging again. im sure it wasnt the safeat thing to do, but it worked. Maybe the dead battery needed some kind of jump.
btw. The wires you would be using are the the black and red. and i got this idea from

I believe these are different types of batteries. Not Lithium, but something else. I bought some spare batteries from eBay and the batteries had the same instructions... That it is not good to let them die completely, and charge then preferably when they still have 1/3 charge left.

I have my Vibrant for a good year now since it came out pretty much. Last week it just stopped charging out the blue. The battery is completely empty and shows a thermometer with a warning sign and stops charging seconds after its plugged in. So I assumed it might be a battery malfunction and I got my spare battery in as soon as I came home and tried charging - same problem. I think it is highly unlikely that both batteries fail at the same time. Therefore, I assume there is something wrong with the temp sensor in the phone. I saw a few people have a similar problem with the epic 4G, but the discussion got really side tracked by other issues. My phone is rooted, but I was running stock froyo, so that shouldn't be the problem or should it?
I just wanna know if anybody had the same problems and if there is a quick solution, I google and forum searched a while but as soon as you throw in the term battery it gets spammed with battery life discussions.I just checked my files I have on the phone, apparently I have the premium insurance - does that mean I just can go to the next Tmo store and get a replacement? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Well for your problem, i suggest you try a different rom and see if the problem persists... maybe its a bug
And as for insurance, you mail the phone in and pay a deductible, which should be like 135$ or so. They send you a refurb.. or if you say it wus lost, you dont have to mail in phone

I don't see it as a bad thing. If your phone gets too hot and keeps charging that's going to burn something inside. When my phone won't charge I know I have let it down. So it can cool down. But to fix your problem reboot the phone. You can keep charging it after it boots up

Mine did something similar. I picked it up after putting it on the charger. It was hot and would not come on. I unplugged it and let it cool off for a while and it cleared up.
I got that message once...
Vibrant was in a car dock, with power.
It was *HOT* out and sun was hitting the back of the unit. (A/C on of course)
Google Navigation was running (display brightness max)
Google Listen was running
Bluetooth was passing music to a speakerphone
When I run the phone with that setup, the charger can't even keep up with the phone power needs. The battery level slowly drops. No question the phone is working hard.
This was a true heat issue... I removed the charger and turned off the display to let it cool off a bit. (I was almost home).
So the question again, is your phone hot or is it a false reading?

I am sorry I didn't clarify the actual battery temp. It is normal - so its neither in the sun or in a too cold spot when I try charging it. The phone probably runs for one for a few seconds before turning off so there is no chance of the battery stats wipe. I think I will try to find an external charger and try to charge the batteries this way to have enough juice for flashing a new rom. Thanks for all the replies!
Does it charge the battery with the phone off? If not, I don't think a new ROM will help.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but a resolution never seemed to be made here. Has anybody found a fix to this?
As of yesterday, my wife is having the same issue with my old Vibrant phone which she now uses. It's flashed with Bionix V 1.3.1 and Tigerblood overclock to 1.2ghz. This could be the issue, the Tiger Blood overclock, but I'm not sure. I'm out of the country for three weeks and currently she's left with a dud of a phone that keeps giving her the temperature warning in the triangle when plugged in while the phone is powered off followed by it stop charging. When she turns it on, she gets to the SD card check and then the phone completely freezes. Once in a while it's able to stay on for a minute or so before freezing, but more often than not the phone does not fully turn on and just goes frozen after a few seconds, sometimes at the Tigerblood logon screen before making it to the desktop. Me being 4000 miles away doesn't make it easier to help her but I've recommended she leave the phone unplugged, battery out for the night to see what happens. I also told her to take off her silicon case thinking maybe that has something to do with the overheating. Well after 7 hours of her letting it sit to cool off like that, with the case off, she plugged it back in and is having the same issues as yesterday. Absolutely no progress made. One of her colleagues said she should try leaving the phone in rice confused:) so she's giving that a go and another guy in a phone shop who she went to for advice after work said that the motherboard might need replacing. I'm convinced all it needs is to have the Tigerblood removed or reflash a rom onto it but there's really no knowing unless I have it in my hand.
Is there any quick fix to this problem without having to do all that? Surely there must be a way to charge the phone without it heating up and freezing up. She's tried plugging it into different rooms, on her laptop, etc, none seem to get rid of the temperature problem. I've had the phone since August 2010 and never had any issues with it. I also never once saw that temperature error message so was taken aback when she showed me it over skype. I just upgraded to the S3 and gave her the phone 2 weeks ago, but surely it shouldn't just die out just like that? Thought the Vibrants were made tougher than that?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Much thanks in advance
Its most probably a kernel issue or a bug in the rom; so the only way to find out is to flash another kernel/rom..

Will be looking into reflashing another kernel/rom when I get home in a few weeks time, but it must be noted that the phone has been showing no signs of life for the last few days now. After letting it sit out for 7 hours on the first night, battery out and everything, she went to plug it in the following morning and this time absolutely no notification came up. Not even a lighting up of the phone or anything. No signs of life at all. Every time she hit the power button nothing occurred. The phone still heats up and after a few minutes while plugged in and gets very hot to the touch again but no matter how many times she attempts to turn it on, nothing happens.. She's tried plugging it into her computer via usb, into electric sockets in other rooms, even in the bathroom in one of the 115 volt electric shaver outlets in the bathroom (we live in the UK currently), and none of these ideas worked. Still no signs of life. It has been this way for three days now and is frustrating as I can offer no advice to her to get the phone to turn on anymore.
What on earth can be the problem? Has this happened to anyone before? And is there a fix to this or can we consider the phone to be a paperweight at this point?

Some kernels require a certain amount of power to fully boot the phone up and will not charge until it has 5% battery or so. I personally think her battery may be unable to hold a charge or like I said before it doesn't have enough juice to boot the phone because of the kernel. There is a way to charge the battery with the phone off. You can use ANY kind of usb cord, I used an old printer usb cable when I had to do this. All you do is cut off the side that is not usb and strip the positive and negative wires(red and black), then place the stripped wires on the positive and negative connectors on the back of the phone and insert the battery (make sure it's a snug fit). Plug the usb end into your pc and charge the battery that way, DO NOT let charge for over 2 minutes at a time. Wait five minutes and do it again if you have to. If she gets it to boot up, I would definitely flash a new kernel first to see if thats how the problem originated.

I went to pick up my phone a few minutes after, and all the sudden the phone won't turn on anymore.
I've tried pulling the battery, I've tried letting it run through any power still in the circuits, by having the battery out for 30+ minutes. I tried the "pull out battery, hold power for 10 seconds, then pop battery back in," to no avail. I've tried download mode, I've tried using my old Captivate jig.. It doesn't seem to be responding if I plug it in(no heat.)
Any ideas? Going to bring it back to the AT&T store tomorrow to try and get a new one.. I really hope they don't give me any ****. -_-;

I went to the AT&T store today since they just got a new batch in. Unfortunately, my faulty phone actually wasn't a problem with the phone.. It was a problem with the battery.
Somehow, the battery shorted out the entire phone, and killed it. The reason why I suspect this, is that I asked for the old battery in the new phone they were giving me. Sure enough. That phone is now a brick, also..
Thankfully, they were nice enough to give me a different one and not shove the newly dead one down my throat..
So.. Not quite sure how that happens, but sure enough.. That battery is a Galaxy killer.

You got a dud piece of hardware. Shouldn't have any problem exchanging it.

The only thing you didn't mention is using the stock charger to charge the battery for an hour or so. Did you try that? It could be a dead battery. And once the battery is critically low, your PC can't supply enough juice to charge the battery.

Yes, the USB charging mode on the computer sucks. Its easy to draw a deficit of power running off the computer. I had 8 percent and plugged in via USB and within a minute. Or two it was almost dead, fell to 1% in literally 5 mins. It was almost like it was pulling power FROM. The phone
The stock wall charger is 700ma IIRC. Most PCs can output only 500ma max (USB 1.0/2.0 standard). The 700ma is needed when battery level is really low. So, don't leave home without the wall charger.
I tried plugging the phone into the wall charger, to no avail.
Won't even show the charging screen, or get warm.
Bah! Hopefully the AT&T store will have new ones in stock tomorrow.

That's surprising - did they confirm that the phones remained dead even with a "good" battery in?
The charger chip in our phones (MAX8922) has plenty of short-circuit protection mechanisms. (Battery prequalification mode limits current to 90 mA at extremely low batt voltage, and it also has temperature limiting.) So a shorted battery shouldn't have been able to damage the phone.

Indeed, we tried swapping the "new" battery into it. Both of the phones were gone. I never even thought it was probable. Maybe it was just a bad batch? Who knows.
Either way! New phone smell, is great. =P
I put my phone on the charger last night just like every other night, and awoke this morning to the screen frozen, displaying the time of 12:35am. No buttons were responding, so I pulled the battery and put it back in. It won't boot up, no lights, no nothing. Tried my spare batteries, still nothing. Tried all my chargers and nothing happens when plugged in. Dead.
Rooted, with UnNamed rom, but haven't flashed anything in months.
Is this thing dead, or can it be brought back with a jig?
EDIT: Thanks for the troubleshooting tips, but this baby is dead.dead...now I have to return it and hope that warranty stays intact...

No it was docked in the Samsung charging stand...
Pull your battery and leave it out for at least 10 minutes... go for 30. Then put your battery back in and try it. The purpose is to completely deplete all of your electronic resistors and capacitors of any power.

Reason I asked is it can make the phone overheat, it happened to me and many others on here.
I woke up to the same situation as you did and had to pull the battery and wait a bit then charge it back cause it was dead.
Ok battery out for 30+ minutes, and popped it back in - still nothing, dead as a doornail...
Should I try a jig before taking it to warranty, just to make sure that they aren't going to be able to boot it and see I rooted?
If there's anything I can do to avoid having to go buy a phone at full price to get me through the weekend, that would be awesome...going out of town in the morning and can't be without a phone...
I had that happen to a Captivate. Go to an AT&T warranty place and they can swap it.

I had this happen a few months ago. I think it has to do with how it deals with a completely dead battery. The symptom is that the phone is either completely unresponsive or will show the battery logo with a circle and then quickly power off. This is how I got around it:
-First pull out the battery, and leave the back cover open.
-Get a microUSB cable plugged into your PC at the ready, but not plugged into the phone yet. This will not work with the wall charger.
-Hold down vol down, vol up, and power, and then plug in the USB cable. In a few seconds you'll see the download mode "Custom OS" dialog with a yellow triangle.
-Do not press any buttons after this point.
-Plug in the battery, and let it sit for 10-30 minutes.
-After the battery's had enough time to get a base charge, hold the power button until the screen turns black.
-If the battery has enough charge to begin charging, you should see the full-screen battery logo with a "progress wheel" circle in the middle change to the battery with the five dots below. This means the charger is now active.
-You can now let it charge off of USB, or move it to the wall charger for a faster charge.
Again, this is what's worked for me. Post here if you are having any luck with this method.
I have a Captivate that died on me in the exact same fashion two days ago. I'm deciding whether to wait a few months for new releases or just getting a SGSII. ATT is offering it for $10 with a contract renewal.
Since my phone is out of warranty, is there any other way to get it replaced?

Surprisingly I had the same EXACT situation occur as the OP. I set my phone down charged via USB last night and next morning I woke up to an extrememly luke warm phone with nothing turning on, it was a blank screen and I for sure thought the battery was dead...
Ended up at Radioshack in search for a spare battery to use, but the employee's were assholes and wouldn't let me borrow one from out of their SGS2 displays, so I decided at this point to just find a battery online and be phone-less for a few days.
Thanks to pokey for this little gameplan he had written out, , it appears there still is life in my lil' R2D2... at least it appears to be.
Edit: Yep it worked, just have to wait for it to charge now--those who have this problem follow pokey's steps and this should direct you on the right path. Good luck!!

Unfortunately this didn't work for me, thanks though, had high hopes and tried it several times. I picked up a jig and no life with that either. Dead.
Oh well...warranty phone is supposed to arrive today, can't wait to take back this WP7 abomination (had to try it).
So since this phone is verified as dead now, is there anything to worry about in sending it back through warranty since I'm unable to wipe/unroot it?
This scares the crap out of me since I just got my phone. Good tips to try if it does happen.
Can it be concluded that it has something to do with leaving the charger on it after it is fully charged? Maybe something with the voltage regulator(?) that tells the charger to stop charging when the battery is full.
I have dewalt drills that I swear lose life if you leave them on the charger for long periods of time consistently (even though they are to stop charging when the battery is full). Whats weird about these problems is that it killed the phone too, not just the battery.

Yes you should worry, at&t might not be able to get it up and running but Samsung will, and when they get the device up and running they will see the root & rom so expect a very large phone bill in 1-2 months.

Well that's just friggin' great
My sgsii died on me while rooted and I swapped it out for warranty and did not incure a bill from AT&T or Samsung. It's been about 6 months now so I'm pretty sure they just used it for spare parts.
The funny part of the story is my current sgsii died the other day won't turn on at all. Got my jig today and that doesn't work either. I will try pokeys method and hopefully it works for me.

While you could be correct, I don't see Samsung sinking the labor time into looking that closely. I'm guessing they just hook it up to something that'll push the firmware, test functionality, and send it out as a refurb.
I could very well be wrong, but when you get hundreds/thousands of dead devices like they do, its more cost effective to just keep it simple and move onto the next.
I've never returned a device, stock or customized, so this is just my guess based on experience working with a large corporation.
Alright so my Vibrant won't charge. I JUST recovered my phone from a brick, (I was having issues with the battery life on Slim Roms 4.0 compared to 3.9--in the middle of flashing back I accidently wiped my internal memory. As I was recovering it using Odin, my fat cat jumped on my bed and caught on my phone cord bricking it.) Flashed using Heimdall and was able to get my phone into working order.
Now, I placed Slim Roms 4.0 back on my phone initially after the unbricking to have something working on it, even though the battery life less than impressed me.
So I charged it like normal yesterday, got it to 100% and was fine and dandy with it working. (Still sucking up battery life like a vampire in a fat camp.)
So the update 4.1 went live yesterday, I flashed it immediately to that. The battery life was amazing! So I do the normal thing when I flash to a new ROM. Let it die completely before charging it completely. It's now dead and will not charge.
Symptoms;
I plugged in my normal cable for work (a cheap cable I purchased off of Ebay.) And up comes the round loading symbol. Followed by a darkening of the screen, followed by nothing.
One thing to note, is while it has it's loading circle on, the bottom buttons light up when I touch them.
My Steps;
-I attempted different USB ports since I charge through my work computer. No luck.
-I "borrowed" my co-workers USB cord and USB to wall plug. Attempted the new cable in the computer first. No luck.
-Plugged the borrowed USB into the wall charger. Same thing happens.
-Used my own cheapy cable in wall charger. Same thing.
-Took co-workers complete set and plugged it in in a different room. Nothing.
-Took out my battery, plugged in USB, placed battery back in. Nothing.
-Hold down the Vibrant buttons to get into Bootloader, it resets the loading circle and nothing more.
So now I'm sitting here wondering what to do. I do not have rubbing alcohol readily available, however since it charged to 100% yesterday I do not believe that is the issue, but I'd be willing to try if I had access.
Something you should know, I am using a Samsung Epic 4G battery in my phone.
-For those who might judge saying it is dumb, I have gotten 54 hours out of that battery on one ROM before, that is with texting, talking on the phone and installing apps. I'm fond of this thing, however I have my stock battery at home still.-
Any suggestions you guys have would be appreciated. I have tried things that I found on this forum and basic tech support to no avail. (I am at work so the things I can use are fairly limited. However cords are of no shortage.)
Alright, I unplugged my phone from being plugged into the wall charger for an hour and 3 minutes later it decides to turn itself on.. Not sure what's going on but I'm not going to complain.
So my question now is, can anyone explain this or help prevent this in the future?
From what I've heard draining a battery until it dies can damage it. But, I'm not an expert on that. It's possible that the battery needed more time to recover from the drain.

I had something similar happen when running lithium volt ROM. My battery completely died and the phone cut off (obviously.) I plugged it in the charger and it immediately tried to boot the phone up but it was bootlooping at the startup screen. I let it sit there for 20 minutes or so thinking maybe it is charging but as soon as i unplug the charger the phone cut off. Luckily I have an extra battery, popped it in, flashed a new ROM thinking that was the problem, turns out it was something to do with the ROM(maybe it needed a certain amount of battery power to boot up). My completely dead battery worked on the cm7 ROM I flashed, plugged in the charger and it booted up normally and started charging.

Yea it could be ROM related but it also could be a number of other things. Hopefully flashing a new ROM will fix the issue.

Thank you. I might just have to downgrade back to 3.9. It's almost a shame. xD
I'm going to test my old battery in this ROM just to make sure before I downgrade.
You need to use your Samsung usb charger, and wall adapter only. These two are the only ones that will actually work. I had this same problem and realized it was because I wasn't using the Samsung stuff. Even when pugging into the computer, use the Samsung USB cabe only. As for the battery your using... I wouldn't recommend it, no matter the fantastic battery life you must be getting.

ROM. some roms do that. it will not let you power up while charging if the battery is very low. you will get the circle and the battery symbol after. sometimes you still cant unless you pull the battery. happened to me many times
Hey guys, it's been awhile since I asked a question, but here I am, lol.
In a nutshell, I'm pretty sure something in my device (hardware) is fried, but I thought I'd see if anyone knows better.
The problem is my device seems to be sending power out of the usb port, and doesn't connect to the pc or recognize it is charging correctly.
This also applies to download mode (windows says device has malfunctioned) and when powered off (there is no battery that shows up when plugged in). In order to power back on after turning it off, I have to remove the battery, then reinsert it while holding down the power. I can't think of much that could have caused this, other than I was visiting places with high humidity levels. One unusual thing that happened before this started was my device rebooted into safe mode when playing bad piggies. That was really weird since I have tried booting into safe mode before, but thought samsung must have disabled it for some reason. I have already tried wiping data and flashing a new kernel/rom. Obviously I can't re-partition since I can't connect to my computer in download mode. What do you guys think? I think it is time for a new device.
EDIT: I should mention that it started behaving normally yesterday for about 5 minutes, but then it went back to this.

I'm 99.9% sure that under normal conditions that an Android device should never power the USB port. Source of speculation. If it is indeed powering the USB, then you've either got a really wonky firmware installed, or some sort of hardware issue. I'd try to make sure that it's sending power out before going further (especially if you can't charge it, the battery will be dead soon). After this test, I'd keep the battery out for a while, just to be sure it's not going to short anything.
One thing I've noticed in my tinkering is that taking a device apart, then putting it back together again can mysteriously fix problems (although 75% of the time the fix is temporary). If you suspect water damage, opening it up and letting it air out might help. I want to say there are certain cleaners that are great for cleaning up any water spots that might be shorting things out, but I've never had to try myself.
That's all I can think of right off. Good luck.

Yeah, I'm working on taking it apart right now. With my limited experience on electronics, I would be willing to bet it's a capacitor that's gone bad somewhere. That wouldn't be a problem on a desktop since I could just solder a new one in, but I don't think I have the skill to do something in such a small scale, not to mention I don't think you can even buy them that small.
The same thing happened to me, and I had to send it in for repair. Luckily, I was still in warranty. Also, are you sure it's not the charger cord?

I've tried multiple cables, and I'm unfortunately out of warranty.
Upon disassembling and cleaning with rubbing alcohol, it seemed to be working properly, with the exception of computer connection. However, I plugged it into a DC car charger (leaving the charger itself unplugged from an outlet), and the light came on again (which is what I was talking about when I said it was sending power out), and now it is acting weird again. I guess I'll take it apart and clean it again...

honestly, i cannot begin to fathom what could be causing this. it seems to me samsing paid more attention to the charging port then say amazon did on the first gen kindle.
i do however, wish you the best of luck and hope you somehow manage to fix it

See! Told you taking it apart and putting it back together again works... temporarily. :silly:
You're right, that does sound like power going out. Which would be super cool for powering, say, a micro USB laser pointer, but it's not so great when it should be charging. Can you double check with another device that the charger doesn't light up normally? I know my wife's laptop charger has a LED that stays on for a long time after it's been unplugged from the wall, sipping off of power left in the charger. It could be something similar with your charger.
Just a though... if power is only suppose to go into the device, then wouldn't it be reasonable to assume to that there would be a diode forcing power to only go one way? Or does it need to cycle power back to the charger? IDK, but it might be worth looking to see if something looks missing.
I read somewhere that if the battery voltage gets too low i.e. battery is totally flat, a current will flow from the device to the charger so this may be what's going on here. I didn't really understand the post as I was just whizzing through the thread, but i think the solution was to charge the device for many hours until the battery voltage was high enough for normal charging to occur. I'll try and locate the post, but it might take a while

@iJimaniac if all of these suggestions dont work, there is the possibility to just buy another battery and a battery charger and keep switching out the batteries when they die

From what it sounds like, your power circuit is fried and is not directing power correctly this means that you're probably going to have to replace the mainboard. however don't worry. you can get one from a player with a broken screen on ebay for about 10 $. I can p.m. you some links to products on eBay with main board working and not screen and I can post a video on YouTube that shows you how to replace the board. it's actually rather quite easy. I don't get why most people don't do that and instead buy a new one. let me know if that helps

Wow, I didn't realize a broken player is so cheap. I'll look into it, and instructions won't be needed; I've already fully dissasembled my device many times in the past, just for kicks.
Edit: could you send me those links? I'm having a hard time finding very many under $25, which is still a good price I suppose.
the broken player it's self is cheap (0.99$ if your lowest bidder and win) it is shipping that makes up for most of the cost. Just make sure you get one that says powers on, that is the main indicator that the main board is still good.
EDIT: I just looked on ebay, aparantly the person i bought my new board is out of the 4.0 player. and it looks like there is however one with a 9.99$ bid. you could raise it and get the player but that is the cheapest you will get. i will pm you a link to it.

I had the same problem, what i did was, instead of charging it with the original charger, i charged it with my nexus 10 charger in download mode all through the night, and the next day it would have about 80 percent charge and it was in the system, but it drained quick when i would unplugged it, so i repeat the same procedure over several days until get to 100% and scince then i have had no problems with my SGP, hopefully i helped you

Interesting, i thought the devices could not charge in download mode.
On the subject of odd charging behavieor, has anyone noticed that when plugged in running cyanogenmod overclocked to 1200mhz, the micro usb port area on the player gets rather hot?
