Is it just me or does it seem like more apps fc once you have root?
Sent from my BNTV250 using Tapatalk
Root gives you the ability to install some apps that are not compatible with the Nook.
Do stock apps FC on you, or just ones you side-loaded?
If sideloaded you may need to find a specific version of that app known to work on the Nook.
We need a master list (wiki maybe) of app versions known good...
This will change when we can finally get Roms installed. The nook tablet is missing many essential drivers and apps that make it possible to run other apps. It really has been stripped down... We are getting close. Fingers crossed...
As mentioned, root access on its own shouldn't effect stability . As for FC's? I haven't seen one yet on my rooted NT. I'm using ADW EX, have used Go and have a ton of apps installed including many of the $.10 apps from the market. This thing is super stable! I've found a few quirks like the white on white menus, but they have been aesthetic in nature.
Root related force closes should only occur, imo, if you've messed with permissions, folder structure, or manually edited system files to affect stability. If you've installed things that required messing with permissions, you need to reboot the nook (which resets a lot of permissions). Other than sideloading incompatible* apps (or different versions that aren't supported on an NT) I haven't seen any issues.
*Not in android store? Likely on the incompatible list.
I've been using Go launcher yeah - I heard the very recent ADW messed up the way dock works? I considered testing it out but read that recently.

^^you hit it square on the nose. When i firsted rooted apps installed no problem then i tinkered w/ a db file and all hell broke loose. Lol. Once i did a full wipe / factory reset / reroot ive yet to encounter a force close. Im still trying to figure out how to use the bn appinstaller so programs show on the main page.

Anyone experienced this weird problem before? After some use of about few min usage with 2 or more apps running, if the HOME button is pushed, it would reset the launcher and ask me to pick the default launcher again. I have ADW Launcher, Touchwiz, and LauncherPro. Everytime it does this by prompting "> Complete action using ...", I select ADW and checkmark "Use by default for this action." Some 10 - 20 min later, it loses the selection and ask me again even after reboot, uninstall, reinstall, same problem. I have stock froyo ROM, but rooted, with other kernels. I had latest supercurio kernel, it had same problem. I'm testing Overstock kernel, still same problem. The problem is not so bad, it is bearable as long as I don't press the HOME button. It just gets annoying and happened like 70% of the time of pushing that button. Anyone knows how to fix this? Danke.
Same problem here, but with go launcher. Im using darkys 9.5

I had a similar issue recently. It was an app (MoboPlayer) causing it. Every time I would long press the home button it would lose the default setting. The dev recently fixed it, but I'd suggest having a look at what apps you recently installed and do some testing.

Wait so you are saying an app can cause this? I thought the apps are chrooted (sandboxed) so can't really affect each other except for OS affecting them. What's the best way to figure out what was recently installed? I have lots. If none, I guess I can try uninstall all the apps...and reinstall just a few to see if that holds up.

Just a idea..
-Have Titanium backup.
Backup the launchers(keep 1 there though you need 1), if you have to save the data, save the data.
uninstall it.
reboot.
restore it
that might work?
or erasing the data from the apps might work too

I thought the same thing, but it was definitely MoboPlayer causing it for me. It went away when I uninstalled, and returned immediately when I reinstalled it. I emailed the dev and he fixed it.
If you have Titanium Backup, under the Backup/Restore tab, you can tap the "ordered by" header to sort by install date.
When this happens the easy fix is to go task manager and shut all programs it will reset for you your settings np. This happens to me occasionally when my 4yr old plays with my phone, somehow she jacks it up and erases some the launchers like the phone, etc. So, I found this restores easily.
The problem was ADW.Launcher Free. Without it, things seem alot more stable.
I have a solution
I was struggling with this very issue. I thought it was due to partially corrupt system data. I installed another ROM, from scratch, rebuilt it to my specifications, then added a different launcher once again (different one this time). Rebooting resulted in the default lost and also all widgets showing with an "error loading widget" message in their place.
I finally figured out what was going on. It's because I had selected the option "move to SD card" as the default when installing applications. So, the launcher was on the SD card. Well, this creates a problem with timing, because the SD card is prepared a little later on in the boot process, after the required time to load the launcher. The result? Android draws up the default launcher. And for some reason, the older launcher ends up compromised with some of its default settings.
Once I moved my launcher app back to phone memory, the problem went away.
I've noticed at least 10 apps that show as 'not compatible' with my Streak, including the latest, XDA app, for example.
Question is: Why?
I have only modded the resolution to 180, but other than that, I'm running a stock and rooted ROM (351) with just a bit of bloatware stripped out. (Stage UI, etc.)
Can anyone give me an idea as to why apps that by all accounts ARE compatible show as being incompatible for me?
The main point is that I'm sure that many of these apps work for other Streak owners, just not for me.
The XDA app being a prime example of such. There must be a logical reason, but I don't know it. Anyone?
I am also on stock 351 and the XDA app shows up as compatible for me in the market. Did you change your fingerprint to get another app working, such as Netflix? I am at the stock 160 density.
The method that the market uses to determine compatibility is pretty poor when it comes to matching apps with compatible devices. You can try changing the fingerprint to another device.
Double check that you have the content filtering (maturity level) set to all, but that should not effect the XDA app.
I too found now that lots of the apps shows that they are not compatible with Dell Streak. Even some of the apps already installed won`t update because they are not compatible with Dell Streak now!
I tried to unroot Streak and now it is ok and at least apps already installed are again compatible. So try to unroot it first. Anyway, I needed root just to get rid of ooVoo etc.
I have official 351 and density set to 140

I can't function without root, but I suspect it might be the same problem, because I have the identical problem. Installed apps show as 'incompatible'... what a load of crap.
Thanks for the tip. I'll try it.

Can't unroot.

Many things which I already have installed show as incompatible, such as these two examples:
Drag Racing
XDA Forum app
QuickOffice Pro (which I own and purchased directly) is also listed as incompatible, but I have it installed and running perfectly.
I found an apk here for the Drag Racing app and it works. I'm now up to the latest version, but my Market app still shows that I need to update but says it's not compatible, but as I said, I already have the game installed and have already updated it to 1.1.0 via the apk manually.
There are quite few others, but I don't recall them all now.
None of those are showing as incompatible on my Streak. So the most likely culprit is the screen DPI change you made, since the DPI change is the only major difference between your Streak and mine. There are other possibilities such as a bugged Market APK or a corrupt flash of the ROM, but those aren't as likely.
I presume you have tried getting these apps through your PC?
I think it is just the root. I have DPI 140 (different from official 160 and even that is not standard for 800x480 screen) and I have device unrooted now and apps are compatible again (for example Appbrain was not compatible before and now it is ok).
When I last time had problem with this I wrote to developer of application and he wrote back that the app should be compatible with Dell Streak. So I wrote to Google support and they wrote that my device is rooted so they can't support it. So maybe Google is blocking some of the apps to the root users?
Donalgodon: sorry for your troubles with unrooting. I used Gingerbreak and the unroot function worked perfectly.
If I weren't rooted I might be inclined to agree with you. But, I'm rooted therefore something else must be causing the compatibility problem. Unlike you guys, I didn't change the dpi of the screen. The dpi change seems to be the common denominator here, and thus the dpi is more than likely the culprit.

Hmmm... but I have different DPI then official (140) and when unrooted apps are compatible again and I still have DPI 140... But maybe another idea - I updated market manually. If I think of it, that was maybe the time when appbrain shows as not compatible...
So, does anyone updated Android market manually too?
I did not manually update Market, but it did it automatically to the 3.1.3 version. I'll strip out the DPI change later today and report back.
I had the same problem so I tried changing back to 160 using blade buddy, nothing happened, until I accidentally turned it off. After boot, I checked market and it was fixed. So I tried going back to 200 using lcd density (which is temporary until you do a full reboot), the problem came back. I did a reboot, now back to 160 and it was ok again. So I tried blade buddy again and set it to 200 and saved it, full reboot, and it's still fixed. I hope this will solve your problem too.

Just a follow up to my own OP...
I stripped out every mod I made and even replaced the original build prop from a backup I made when I first flashed the stock ROM.
No luck. Still the same apps show as incompatible with my device.
This may be one more motivation for me to dump the streak.
Anybody have any other ideas about what I can try?
I had problems with some of my apps not showing so I changed my fingerprint to 351, uninstalled the new market update, and froze the market updater. Using the old market without a problem and all my apps are available. HBO Go would not install with the new market, now it does. Running SD 191 perf 200 dpi.

Hi all,
I just bought a Nook Tablet, and I'm already in love with the price and speed (I've loaded games like Shine Runner, and they run perfectly - I honestly didn't expect it!). I've spent quite a bit of time researching my issues and have not been able to fix some of them.
Anyway, my tablet came with 1.4.1 installed. I used this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583&page=11) to root my Nook. I had no problems. I then installed Market, have the Google apps running, added Go Launcher EX, and everything runs fine.
Except for third party apps and other things. Here are my issues.
1) Can't run NTHiddenSettings.apk or similar apps - when I use the Package Installer I get an error message about not being able to run the application (For security reasons, your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android Market), then I'm dumped to the hidden settings. I try to change the 3rd party app setting, but nothing happens. I've read a bit about it and it seems it has to do with 1.4.1.
2) Can't set Go Launcher EX as the default launcher. Actually, I can, but nothing happens. The Nook launcher is always the default. I've tried to clear the settings on the application manager, and I do get the prompt regarding which launcher I want to use - but it always uses the Nook one. I read the Newbie FAQ and it seems the usual way to get to the launcher is by using "Search" and running the app manually - that works. I only want to know if I can use the "N" button to run Go Launcher automatically.
I'm about to downgrade my NT to 1.4.0, since I can't find any other way to fix my issues. Or is there a way to keep 1.4.1 and run 3rd party apps and change my launcher?
Thanks for any help!
As far as I know, 1.4.1 didn't bring any additional functionality to the device, just an attempt by B&N to close some doors they left open. In other words, you won't be losing anything by downgrading to 1.4.0. I'm sure if I'm wrong, someone will chime in to correct me.

Thanks for all your answers!
Here's what I did. My Nook is running almost perfectly well now. I can't see the SDCard on my PC, but hopefully I'll fix that pretty quickly.
1) Rooted using the SDCard procedure.
2) Installed the Gapps Zip file.
3) Used this procedure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473973 in order to be able to load 3rd party apps. Success!
4) Ran NTHiddenSettings and enabled USB debugging, etc.
5) Installed HomeCatcher.
6) Installed the one click install for CWM.
Now my Nook is rooted, has GoLauncher EX as its default, and is ready with CWM. I can't be happier. Almost everything I could ever want out of a Galaxy Tab for far less money! Thank you all

Their have been several reports of the widget engine crashing on some ICS ROM's in the developers forums. From what I have found out is an issue with the layout of the screen this is causing the issue. I you notice, the widgets that have a 5x size are the ones that are crashing. Lets use Jorte Calendar as an example. Install Jorte and try to load a widget, it crashes. Ok, now go into Jorte setting > widget setting, and make all the 5x widget unavailable. Problem solved. This problem does not exist in other launchers, on in the default launcher.
I would have posted this in the developers forum, but I am new to this forum.
The development area would've been the wrong place to put this. Due to the fact that that section is for dev's to post their creations and such.
As for your problem I am not sure. I couldn't open then personalize tab when I was running ICS. Usually a reboot fixed that problem though.

You must not have understood my post. The developers do not know what the problem is. I was stating that I have a clue of what the problem is.
The problem lye's in the way the launcher deals with widgets that are too big for the screen. When the launcher tries to access a widget that is too big for the screen layout (4x4), the widget engine crashes instead of ignoring the over sized widgets.
Our threads differ a little bit. I'm making a list of bad apps, while you got a potential solution. you may want to PM a dev. they can work magic
Okay. THanks
I have only experienced the widget FC on one custom ROM. I believe it had something to do with one of the apps I installed, because it worked fine until I started downloading applications from the market. I tried a few times to reflash to pin point, but I didn't have a lot of time to see if that was the main cause of the issue.
personalize problems in ICS
I finally gave up on ICS yesterday after struggling for a week with problems with personalizing screens. I tried to narrow the problem down to specific apps, but eventually concluded that it was not caused by specific apps involving widgets. Every time that I downloaded more than a half-dozen apps from the market, I would start getting the "unfortunately, personalize has stopped working" messages, preventing me from adding any further apps to home screens. I could continue adding widgets or shortcuts, but not apps. Not even rebooting helped, and I would end up having to re-flash the ROM and start all over. It seemed to depend on the number of market apps that I downloaded, not necessarily the specific app. Even apps without widgets such as quickboot would cause the crash after the first half-dozen apps were downloaded.

Joelz latest sense rom has a fix included that will eliminate this problem. It completely worked for me, and I was having it big time.
Thanks, I will check that out. You are TheMan!
Edit: actually, it was his ROM that I was using when I had all the problems. It was ICS Sense Redefined-Always Brilliant![Sense 3.6][4.0.3]. I could never get past the personalize problem to add more than a few app short cuts.
even after jolez fix im having problems on scotts rom... i had no problem on his 2.3 but when i flashed his 2.4 all hell broke lose... i cant even some apps from the market like engadget? and no i havent done any other modding except installing apps?

Same here. Lots of FC's and some apps don't work.

I had to bail on ICS after struggling mightily to resolve the personalize problem, and I was scared to death about bricking the brand new phone after fighting the mainver problem seeking a return to stock root. Luckily, I found the RezRom GB Rom that includes an automatic fix for reversion from ICS. I highly recommend it, though I quickly nandroided back to stock root. I will be going back to RezRom this weekend when I have more time to tweak it.
The FC's of Sense and personalization appears to be related to apps installed on the SD Card.
Go into settings > apps > on phone (2nd tab) and uncheck any apps that have a check mark and move them to the phone.
If you have none checked and still getting the FC's then for sure I am wrong.
^ but none of mine are on the SD card?

I have tried most of the JB Roms for the Galaxy S3, trying to see what would bother me less in every rom as a missing or not working feature.
I am facing the same problem with almost all roms (but not with all).
As soon as I bring back my applications and data through Titanium backup (never restoring the system files of course) then when I go to Settings/Applications Manager and try to scroll through the installed applications it always freezes and I get the message "Unfortunately, Settings has Stopped" and I get back to home screen.
As I said I did not had the problem only with a couple of roms (not remembering which ones though) but having it most of those I flashed.
All the roms have always been flashed on totally blank mediums since I have always used full wipes (tried to reflash a couple of them on top just to see if this would fix the problem but it did not)
Note that all applications do scroll normally and very fast in other programs also listing the installed applications, either through Titanium Backup or even in the drawer where all apps literally fly when scrolling.
Any help or advice would be greatly.
Does it work ok before you restore apps from Titanium Backup? If it does, try just restoring the apps one at a time and testing after each one. I suspect there's a duff application in there that's been restored, and that's causing the problem
Alternatively just reinstall the apps from the Play Store rather than using TB.
Thank you anthropolyte, man you are fast.
Thought of many things related to JB (because up until v4.0.4 I did not have this issue with - almost - the same applications installed) but I did not think for a moment that a specific application could be the issue. I will re-flash the rom later today and try it your way.
I will report back in case someone faces the same issue.
You're welcome - good luck!
Dear jsfero, did you manage to solve that problem? I'm just facing the same. Firstly I thought it was due to blackm* app but after uninstall it nothing changed. Then I thought it may have to do with apps in drawer showing the same name. Then I kept one and uninstalled the other. Nothing changed. I'm just a bit bored with this situation. My only difference is that I occurred to me also with ICS, not only with JB or CM10.
Could you provide me with some light about this issue?
Many thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, after having tried almost everything from re-flashing to re-downloading all my apps, I could not manage to find out the source of this problem.
It is only just by accident that I found out that a couple of ROMs are not causing any problem and the phone works perfectly well. The one I do remember and I do use now as my main daily usage ROM is the one from Sotmax.
Now, I don't know if this problem is the outcome of a 'bad' combination or bad coexistence of certain programs from kernel or Rom, all I know is that my exact same Titanium back with over 300 apps is the same one I tried on all the Roms so I doubt that the problem is coming the applications side. It was always as if the amount of applications / data was too high for the Roms to handle and crashed the application. And all the sudden one day, I simply realized that with Sotmax's Rom and same applications installed via Titanium did not cause any problem or malfunction.
I even changed kernels, from stock to Siyah and now Perseus, the problem seems to be gone for good with this Rom. I am sure that I must have found a one or two other Roms which did not cause the problem either, unfortunately I did not like them that much to keep them and remember which one they were.

I had the same problem as well unfortunately, also couldn't access App info/app size
Had to uninstall some apps, then reinstalled them again

Yes, I can confirm that Broken Sword game causes App Info to crash. Another one that I found is from Samsung Apps called "Catch The Monkey". Troubleshooting this was time consuming as I had to uninstall each app in the sequence (refering to appbrain.com which has the sequence of apps I installed from Google Play) and keep testing whether App Info crashes or not.
