Can tech support tell if I'm rooted over the phone? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a small echo-like noise now that I hear during phone calls on my phone. I think it is a hardware issue because I don't hear it on my bluetooth headset. I called Verizon 800 number the other night because I was wondering about the 4G outage and mentioned my audio problem while I was on the phone with her. She said if I call back from another phone, tech support would connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem, and if its unfixable they would send me another Thunderbolt.
I am wondering if I need to unroot before I do this....would tech support be able to tell if my phone was rooted and thus void the warranty and not be able to do anything for me? What should I do?

Bare minimum I'd install the stock rom on there, I don't believe they would dig far enough to see if fastboot is unlocked.

As for the title question Yes, they can tell if rooted.

I don't think they can tell Cuz I called yesterday Cuz my screen is messing up they called me back on another line and wanted me to do a factory reset but didn't know that I was already on GB

The only thing I can think of, and I'm no expert or anything so this is just a guess, is that they could look at the software version of the phone, and if it isn't the latest, or a previous release for this phone, then they could speculate that you are rooted, though I don't think that alone would hold up in court if it ever came to that.

When the support rep told the OP that they would "connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem", I think they were going by the standard "don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.
Can they remotely connect to our phones ? I wasn't aware that they could.

Over the phone? Absolutely Not

Correct, that's what they said ("don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.)
So should I still unroot to be safe before I call them or no....

What ROM are you using ?

If you want to be on the safe side, make a nand backup, flash a stock ROM, call them, then restore the backup. I'll pretty sure they can't tell if you have a custom recovery.

Don't know how they do it, (simple user here) and not the first time I've seen this asked or answered. If you're bored jump on every TB forum your on and I'm sure you'll find your curiosity satisfied. Maybe it was on BAMF? I could care less how they do it. (No ins here) Call technical support and ask them what rom your on and how dare they know that.

Liquid AOSP 3.2.
I unrooted just to be safe and the tech rep never said anything and I got them to send me a new sim card and if that doesn't solve my problem (which I don't think it will), then they will send me a new thunderbolt.
When I rooted again after the phone call it wouldn't let me restore my rom and I got stuck in a boot loop. Luckily I had rom zip's on my sd card, so I installed one from scratch, reflashed cwm via rom mgr again, then it let me restore it.
Very weird, and I was terrified I jacked my phone up.

Hmm keep looking, I won't be at a pc till tomorrow maybe. But like I said I have no way to confirm only what I've read which is what I do. And that was second hand information. As most of this is. I'm really trying to remember because I know these site searching's are lacking at best.

I just recently used to work for at&t customer care and if vzw is anything like them, the only way they can maybe tell is if you have an unlimited data plan plus unofficial tethering app. Or if you send it in for warranty/Asurion replacement. Otherwise i don't really see how they could see in any way if it was rooted

That is understandable, thank you. Still gotta get to my pc. I know people have called in on their rooted devices for certain reasons and been called out only to deny. And of course unroot before going in. For whatever reason. Sticking to it.

That's why I asked what ROM. A support rep could simply tell the person to read them a version # that will be different than "stock".

theres no guarantees but you are correct they probably wont notice that it doesn't work. What they will be looking for is if the phone works, water damage indicator and physical damage. They will probably once over the phone then return it as long as you are within your proper return period.

That's what I'm thinking. It works it just won't have as much bloatware on it. There just gonna resell it anyway. I tried to restore the nandroid of the original rom but once restored it gets stuck at the first samasung splash screen.

If you flash back via ODIN make sure the three button recovery works because if ODIN crashes mid-way (I've had this happen twice on my previous Vibrant) you've got a brick if you can't get it back into download mode via the buttons. Do a forum search. Or maybe if you wound up with the dreaded black screen of death that wouldn't be such a bad thing. They'd almost have to take it back then.
i just returned one the other day to best buy and the chick went through the phone for a couple of minutes, checked settings and menus and then also checked for physical damage. i had reflashed it back to stock anyways as bell's version comes with a bunch of specific apps. i was glad i did flash it back and i also relocked it to bell's network as i had unlocked it for use on rogers

It really isn't.. its better to be safe than sorry. At least thats how I feel.
And as far as that phone -- pc logo, I guess they would take it back but if they ask you how did it get that way? you're going to have to lie about it and its just going to feel really awkward.
Truthfully though, all they'd have to be trained to do is not accept returns if you see the superuser app. That'd be the easiest way to see if someone has rooted their phone & If you're not even going to take the effort to flash it back to stock, you're probably not going to delete that app either.
Just re-Odin it & call it a day. It took me less than 5 minutes to get back to stock & maybe another 5 to download the necessary files.
This will also ensure that you don't have any leftover contacts or log ins to facebook or anything like that on there (better safe than sorry).
Thanks guys. I was using my slide for the last couple of days by picked the vibrant back up and fell back in love. If I do decide to return it I'll put it back on stock. Thanks again guys.

i got my vibrant the day it came out, from costco... $99

They won't care trust me i worked for tmo. These people don't even know what root is they might think its a plant. They just scan it out of their inventory and send it to samsung. If it has root on it they are not going to send it back to tmo just to find u or look to charge your account. That is soooooo tedious cuz u have to do an IMEI search which hardly works on TMOs internal network (i tried when i worked with them never really worked) so yea all they look for is hardware damage and the liquid damage indicator other then that ur golden.

Thank you for this thread! I am rooted and have tried several roms and radios. My question is this: Is the check for updates function in phone settings a reliable way to determine if your phone is capable of receiving OTA updates? I noticed when I was on a leaked radio it would tell me that the update service was unavailable and to check back. When I returned to the stock radio it said there were no updates available. Tia!
P.S. I am currently on the stock rom and radio. I am aware that any official OTA updates may wipe my root and my ability to reroot.

In the past, if you did not have all of the bloatware, etc. that came on the phone (i.e. if you were not completely stock) you would have issues getting the OTA. Since you are back to stock, you should not have any issues, but I wouldn't necessarily say that "check for updates" is the best way to determine that. If you are completely stock, you will get the OTA, but I wouldn't say that check for updates is all that reliable if you have changed something.

I am completely stock with the exception of root at the moment. Just curious if I will be able to deny OTA updates or they will automatically update my phone. With the OG Droid I was asked if I wanted to update or not. I don't want to lose root with no going back. Thanks.
I would assume so (that you can deny). I jumped on the Droid train a bit later but have always been asked (when I was all stock) to update.

[Q] CM7 and 911 Calls

I've been reading that CM7 doesn't allow 911 calls on the vibrant. I haven't tested mine (Running nightly 81, Bali 1.2, GPS Fix).
Is this true? Are the developers aware of this?
If this is true, this should be a huge red flag in any rom that has this problem. Does this problem exist on other roms?
I posted this question to issues as well:
http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=4222
By the way, if you do want to test this, I've seen in other threads a suggestion that you call the non-911 number for your 911 dispatch center and schedule a test call. That way you wont end up with a swat team at your door.
See:

This needs to be addressed. I was dialing 911 two Tuesday evenings ago since I was in a car accident. It is beyond reason why someone would leave such a critical bug on any kind of cellular phone OS. Is 911 linked to the GPS perhaps?

On a Samsung ROM, 911 works perfectly. So how exactly is it THEIR fault?
You people need to get better things to do then blame TMO/Samsung at everything.
Oh no! a CUSTOM ROM's 911 doesn't work! Why don't we blame the big companies because its their branded phone instead of asking how we can help the devs fix it!

Jt is saying that if you don't like it, go back to stock. No one made you flash. Android is supposed to be open source but because of all proprietary crap it's hard to get everything working as well as a developer (and user) would prefer.

It's not you dude. Ive noticed the last couple of months that CM7 brings out all kinds of "characters". I'll just leave it at that.
I am confused if you were upset at me realizing this bug? I know the evidence does fall upon Samsung or T-Mobile for using a custom rom. I am well aware that this Rom is experimental for my phone. Have I known about this flaw earlier, I would of used a different ron.

I remember I had to call 911 on a Samsung rom and it didn't work. Does it have to do with anything?
I called 911 "by accident" for the hell of it, and it worked fine. It must depend on the carrier/area.
Sent from my T959 using XDA Premium App
This post contains the technical details of why 911 calling generally does not work on the Vibrant (and maybe other SGS phones) on CM7. Long story short, it's not necessarily Samsung's fault, they just implemented emergency dialing different than is done in the AOSP. That difference is enormous however because the Samsung implementation involves stuff on a low-level (i.e., radio implementation).

Random question..

when you sbf back to 2.2.2, 2.3.3, or 2.3.4 does your phone not have any evidence (if thats the right word)?

Any previous data I'm assuming? No. Fully stock like it came out of the box.
That isn't fully true, you still have to do a system/data wipe. And some of your info backed up on your SD card will reappear. But as far as apps, etc, etc.. you will have to go through the hellatious setup process, unless you have it all backed up.
Well what about being root?
would that still show evidence of the exploit that is being ran?

Nope, SBF kills root. Trying to send it in on insurance/warranty?
You are gonna want to data wipe and "clean up" internal storage just to be safe on clearing root evidence ...haven't heard of any 300dollar charges for previous rooted phones being sent in.
Sbf overwrites some /system partition. Im sure there may be some way to find out if u ever have rooted but it PROLLY isn't worth the time/process it takes to find those traces.

Even a data wipe doesn't clear everything I've noticed. If you truly want to remove evidence you need to manually delete all the rom zips and bootstrap apk, and any nandroid backups. I mean, they can't prove you ran them but if your serious about removing evidence. Furthermore, I've heard from a true tech geek friend (I will see if I can find a link to back up) Verizon can send a push to your phone and depending on how your phone reacts, they can tell if it is rooted.

I saw something about that before. Heck. Google doesn't let u watch market movies if ur rooted. ((Btw that altered google videos all DOES work...it changes the su check command)
Im sure one day there will be a lawsuit similar to the one against apple about jailbreaking that users that root will WIN based on the precedent set in that case.
Not to mention the phone is supposed to be "open source" anyways. It is just like a car, while it is under warranty only the dealer is supposed to put on OEM upgrade equipment otherwise it is voided, which is part of the reason you carry insurance. And we BUY our phones, not rent/lease them.
About that su command push. I can't for the life of me think of what it is called, but I am pretty sure that is against the law. Not for your work when you join it's network since I assume they are verifying your identity, or the PC, but for them to randomly check if you are rooted.

About that su command push. I can't for the life of me think of what it is called, but I am pretty sure that is against the law. Not for your work when you join it's network since I assume they are verifying your identity, or the PC, but for them to randomly check if you are rooted.

I doubt its random, its probably more like if they try to push an update or soak test they check for root first, I've never got an update pushed to me. If you're rooted I would be shocked if they didn't just put a * next to your account.

I work for a bank. With the right knowledge, and root, you can get some sensitive information. My phone was banned.

But what would the point be to put that *? They have warrantied my device, and I haven't heard of anyone not being warrantied, as well as insurance from Assurion.
And could it be because you SBF to leaked versions? lol

If they also ban customers phones, that sounds like a huge PR problem. Why bother? Why not just do whatever it takes to fix their security issue?

I work in an office away from the banks providing banker support. I have access to servers for JP Morgan nation wide. Not sure if they block cust phones at the sites. I think blocking our phones is more of a security stance chase takes on our end.

Well if it's just in-house, then that's understandable. As an aside, I like Chase. Currently use three chase credit cards. Tried several others over the years and keep coming back. Great cust svc.

Htc rezound flash to PP question.

There is absolutely no support in the main thread so I decide to create my own thread. CDMA workshop is what's needed to get talk and text working, and QSPT gets data working, correct? If so, can I pay to have the phone flashed with just talk and text, and then get the data working my self or is there a certain process that's need to be done with CDMA workshop in order for QSPT to get the data working? Can anyone Enders this please?
Flashed to what? PagePlus?

I know, but no one seems to give any help in that thread. Usually a thread like this makes me people go on endless rants, making someone want to step in and answer the question. I just need to know if I can have voice and text flashed at a store and then be able to get data working with QPST (or QSPT)

Have you tried to manually program with CDMA WS?
The first time I tried it didn't work, and I listed my rez on Craigslist, but then, for some reason, I tried again and that time it worked. Just call up a P+ rep, and tell them you need the values for manually programming the phone.
I didn't program the data because I'm not on the monthly plans.

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe as soon as you pop in a verizon SIM card it will program back to verizon. but I would verify that by someone else first, probably IamTheOneTheyCallNeo or any of the rom devs would know.

That doesn't work. Tried it. Calls won't work but data does for internet. The phone will still show up with the page plus number under settings.

Run a stock RUU and that will restore all VZW settings.
Didnt work!
Hey guys i tried following the link showing hwo to flash. It all seemed to work. i tried making an outbound call and i just get the verizon auto system saying its not active. I thought maybe its because of the sim card. Without sim card it doesnt even try to call and says needs a sim card. Can Anyone help me out on what i might have done wrong? Text doesnt work either! I dont really care about 3g i just want to have my TandT.
