[Q] Help - installing UltraToxic 8.0.1 with Siyah 2.4.2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello experts
may current status are
Kernal - 2.6.35.7 JPKJ2
Baseband - XXKI4
Android - 2.3.5
I'm thinking of installing UltraToxic 8.0.1 with Siyah 2.4.2.
Here are my questions
1. Should I flash the rom first or the kernal?
2. I understand by installing a custom rom i won't be able to use Kies anymore. Any alternatives to backup my phonebook and sms to PC?
This is going to be my first time with a custom rom. Please help.

flash rom first, then kernal.
If you flash kernal first it will be overwritten by the kernal in the rom.
you still can use kies to beck up your phone and messages, kies not will find online updates for your phone with custom roms or stock roms that have been modified.

Thanks for the advice Cosmic. But I cant directly install version 8.0.1 can I? First I need to flash with 8.0 and then update using cwm right?

correct, always follow the developers instructions.

If you ask your question here you're more likely to get it solved.
And if you're just looking for changing your firmware to 2.3.x or CM7 or MIUI you can have a look here and flash one of the firmwares go give your device a boost in performance + durability.
Ill help you out.
Super one Click will root your device.
If you want to then flash custom ROMS then you need to "fix" 3e recovery.
And then use a clockworkmod update.zip (from Rom Manager)
However if you want to go strait to a custom rom, you don't even need to root.
Just flash an odin kernel that has clockworkmod recovery (Speedmod). Then go to recovery and flash your favorite ROM (already rooted, tweaks, features, etc).
Note: always make a backup of your stuff.
If anything goes wrong you can Odin/Heimdall back to stock
Then restore your stuff.

[Q] Need help with installing a custom rom

Hello
I want to install villainrom 3.0 but before I do that, I just have a couple of quick questions.
1. Does my current android version matter when i want to install a new rom. I am currently using the 2.3.3 version. Will it cause problems since it's relatively outdated?
2. Do i need a specific kernel? i.e. Will my baseband version, kernel version or build number cause problems?I am using CF-Root kernel with the following specifications:
my baseband version: XXKG2
my kernel version: XWKF3
my build number: GINGERBREAD.XWKF3
I know that these are probably noobish questions but i appreciate your help.
1. no, the rom will update your phone.
2. No, you do not need a specific kernal as the rom comes with its own kernel.
first! u need to flash have clockworkmod kernel
I've already rooted it with CF-root and i have the clockworkmod installed. I've read on the cwm-kernel post that he doesn't recomend flashing it if I already have CF-root. Is there any reason why villainrom wouldn't work with CF-kernel as the post above stated that villainrom comes with its own kernel?
Also, Do i need anything else before i flash villain rom?

[Q] Reflashing stock Kernel over Siyah 2.6.12

Hey there!
I have a bit of a strange situation on my S2 that I'm not really sure how to deal with. Here's the story:
A few weeks ago I rooted my phone by installing an insecure kernel and using One-Click Root. After that I flashed the secure kernel back to get rid of the yellow triangle.
2 weeks ago I though about trying an ICS custom ROM, so I bought ROM Manager. When I tried to install Clockwork Recovery it seemed to work fine until I rebooted into recovery via ROM Manager. All I saw was the standard "Android system recovery <3e>" with a signature verification error.
A friend than flashed another kernel (Siyah 2.6.12) on my phone. Now, when I reboot into recovery by holding the VOL+ button I come into the Siyah Recovery System while using ROM Manager still shows the signature error. How can there be 2 different recoveries on one device?
So the question is: how can I get rid of this mess, start over with Stock Kernel + Stock Recovery (ROM is still carrier stock) and get the phone to install a CM9 Nightly ROM?
Any help would be deeply appreciated.
Phone info:
Android Version: 2.3.5
Baseband: I9100NEKI2
Kernel: [email protected]#406
Buildnumber: GINGERBREAD.XWKI8

I'm now running the latest CM9 Nightly without problems

[Q] clear some things regarding kernels , roms on new ics 4.01

hi,
i have a new sg2 i9100 version witch came with 4.04 and no brick bug as reported the emmc.
i am searching for days and i am a bit confused .i am not familiar with that kind of softwares and i would like your help.
the goals: i want to root, and to be able to flash any rom i want.
1)if i understand so far i will need a kernel too?
2)i do not have the knowledge to understand what varius kernels offer and i simply choosed the siyah since it is the most popular(??) the s6 version states "This kernel is only for Samsung JB ROM (No ICS support anymore).
that means that my ics 4.04 will not be accesible and working anymore and i should flash a rom imidiately after the kernel flash?i do not mind to flash rom imediately after siyah kernel since i do not have anything instaled on the phone yet.
is it posible?with odin?1.86 , 3.04?
3)after the siyah kernel flash from the oficial siyah site , do i have root?
4)do i have cwm? if not what do i need to do?
5) is the siyah consider safe kernel?
thanks
i apreciate your help.

Frist root your phone, everything will be explained in the thread. Check FAQ
If you don't know what you are doing, don't flash siyah and stay with the kernel that gets installed when flashing the rom you want.
Flash a custom kernel with Odin. Another Siyah kernel than v6 will do, just check the changelog.
You will have root, CWM and you're able to flash custom roms. You can choose to try other kernels than the one that comes with a rom, but it's not a must.
And the person above is right: If you don't fully understand all this, try to learn a little bit more. It will prevent you from doing something wrong.
Good luck.

I can't upgrade w/ custom kernel.

Hi,
I have an i9300, stock ROM version 4.1.2 and baseband i9300xxema5 w/ custom kernal 3.0.31-Siyah-1.9.1+.
When I try to upgrade, it says my system has been modified.
What steps should I take in upgrading? Bear in mind that I want to keep all my files intact.
Should I begin by finding the stock kernal? Would that work? or should I find a stock 4.4 rom and flash it? But then, I'd lose my files. I don't want that. .-.
You have to install stock ROM via Odin.
