dunno about screen adjuster but in my settings there is: Settings>Display>Screen Mode: Movie, Standard or Dynamic (My TV does this too, but more modes on TV)
Dynamic has awesome clarity and color compared to the other 2.

There must be a way to adjust the system r g b levels. There ARE parameters somewhere in a file that determing the rgb gains at a hardware level. Someone just needs to figure it out. Samsung displays (amoled) seem to turn greenish blue over time (and most lack red out of the box) because samdung factory calibrations are in favor of planned obsolescence and prophet from repairs. Customer satisfaction is second here.
Screen adjuster just creates an overlay and only seems to change the color of greys and not whites thus creating a color correction at the cost of a non linear greyscale. The correct way to do this is to adjust the system rgb levels that are buired in the kernel and amoled controller ic registers. This is what faux display does but finding a kernel that support faux display is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
perhaps someone can explain how to or create an app to adjust the white point and not just the greys because this is the problem...

Hey,
I'm running on CM7. Can the brightness on the phone be set lower than the slider-bar allows? I'm often inside dark rooms and would prefer the brightness to be at a lower level. I know the phone can be less bright, because when you turn Desk Clock mode on (from within the Clock App) it set the screen to a super-low brightness. I was wondering if I can have that brightness for normal use.

settings > cm settings > display > automatic backlight > use custom / edit other levels
not sure what settings would accomplish this, or if it is even possible - but those are the settings you are looking for.
I have -no- idea what the settings do, or how to enable it at all. I tried setting everything to the lowest it goes to (2) but it did nothing... Hmm.

Won't this just set a "filter" on top of the screen, making it darker? It won't really affect the actual backlight, will it? I was hoping to both make the screen darker, and save a bit of battery. Don't know how screen work, just what I think is happening.
According to the description and some users it saves battery on amoled screens...but I haven't tested it...you could be right.

I believe the effect in the desk clock is essentially the same as Screen Filter. It just darkens it. Just like Desk Clock on the Captivate, evident because the status bar stays the same brightness but the clock lowers. That's why the CM7 app makes the status bar disappear, so the app can darken itself and you won't notice it's darker because it doesn't affect the system and the status bar would have stayed the same brightness. Screen filter is a wonderful option. I had it to "hold menu button" in CM7 settings.

I don't think AMOLED screens have a backlight, that's why they're LED and not LCD.
I have the same problem: at night, the screen is too bright. Cyanogen has an option to only display one of the 3 primary colors, so you can turn on only the red subpixels. Sure, you are left with a monochrome screen, but it is dim and uses less power.
I know this is a power saving feature but disabling it does it improve any image quality or no?

Yes, what that feature does is that it adjust the brightness depending on the color currently displayed on the screen. With that feature on everything looks dark, and dim. Turn the feature off and watch everything look bright and vibrant, and for more "oomph" change the screen mode to "dynamic". Gorgeous colors.

I wonder how much effect it has on the battery I get more than enough battery out of 1 day of use so I figure why not enhance the phone

I'm sure many of you have noticed the green tint, especially at lower brightness levels. I've been using this free app to change the tint. It's working great, just remember to disable it if you need to install .apks not from the market.

Try to buy some glasses...
But without custom rom or app you cannot control it.
Cyanogen mod or app ( widgetsoid) can control it very easy.

It has auto brightness. You can go to the Service menu, Sensors section and there you will find Light sensor, there you will see its current values, as far as I remember they are 0..12 or so, but that doesn't really matter, I want to find where the dependency between Light sensor value and brightness is coded.
You should ask some rom dveloper for some info :-/

In ICS we have it in /system/etc/als_curve and there we have 4 folders: 0, 1, 2 and 3 with limits and parameters. I assume these are 4 zones of brightness (0-25% on folder 3, 25-50% in 2, 50-75% in 1 and 75-100% in 0).
We have to change the parameters, as in the post I referred, but personally I didnt understand almost anything, so we need to try... If someone will be trying too, let me know your results!
I have found an easy way to set auto brightness and it works beautifully:
Download and install quick settings.
When you are in quick settings, tap "customize", tap the small tool icon next to brightness, and you will be asked whether to enable light sensor.
Once enabled, you will be able to use auto brightness through quick settings app.

It is enabled by default even without 3rd-party apps. The reason of all this is to make its range bigger, more noticeable.

I also really don't understand why Sony cannot put this option just in the brightness settings.... I have had a long time thought that the SXS doesn't have auto brightness at all but dunno that its in fact hidden somewhere which can be called out easily by a 3rd party app !

It does have auto brightness, it just works a little different from what we're used to so far. You can find the brightness control in Settings->Display->Brightness (at least that's where you find it in Gingerbread). Now, the thing that creates so much confusion, is that this control shouldn't be called Brightness, but Visibility. What the phone does (and imo this is really clever), is that you move the slider to adjust the visibility of the screen best suited for your eyes and then the phone will automatically adjust the amount of light the LEDs glow using an intrinsic curve so that the same visibility is provided outdoors and indoors. You can test this. Set the slider halfway and then go outside, in the sun, and cover and uncover the light sensor a few times. You will see that the screen is dimmed and brightened up while you do that as the phone tries to maintain it's visibility to the setpoint you chose by moving the slider. Simple and clever, huh? What some may argue, is that the brightness variation is not aggressive enough, and they may have a point. Personally, I don't need to move the slider more than 20%, as the screen is perfectly visible even on a sunny day (of course, that is unless the sun directly reflects in the screen, but I found this happens only if you hold your phone on purpose and it is not a comfortable position).

I remember it getting quite dim but you should search for a mod or script.

get yourself an app like notification toggle or do it manually in brightness settings. automatic brightness isn't great cause it's always checking light levels every to confirm if brightness needs to be increased or decreased. notification toggle will allow any percentage and as many levels as you want. I use 10,15,20,25,40,50 and 100

I use screen filter too, but keep in mind that it only draws a dark overlay on your screen to let out less light. The LED back light is still at the same level, but less light escapes. So, it really doesn't help your battery since we don't have AMOLED screens.

The free version currently has a red-, green-, or blue-only RGB channel filter, as well as Amber and Salmon colored filters. You can fully adjust the RGB values of the filter in the Pro version.
Oddly, there is no "balanced coloring" grayscale filter. Would need to use the previously mentioned app or buy the Pro version and adjust the RGB values equally.
Fun to try out at any rate.
I use Lux. It allows you to reduce screen brightness to completely black and unreadable. I don't know but I don't think it justs adds a transparent black overlay to make it look darker.
