[Q] Album Art/Artwork/Cover - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi there..
I embedded all album arts into the mp3s in my pc using mp3tag... all working in my pc...
so i copied all the mp3s into my sensation XE.. all the album art is not displaying in the stock music player like it shows in the pc..
i tried viewing all the mp3s in my phone using another pc, all the album art is there.. but the phone is not displaying.. any help?

I'm gonna bump this one.
I have the exact same problem. I've used hours upon hours on sorting my music through mp3tag, giving them new names, making new folders, finding and embedding artwork in tags, and so on. And when I decided to throw it all on my Desire S, it almost didn't show any artwork at all! I shows like 1 percent or so, the rest is just blank.
Now, I know the phone can show it, cause a lot of the music has been on the phone before and showed artwork. BUT.. the problem was it didn't show all artwork (only around 90 percent or so), so I decided to transfer all my music onto my 64gb mincro-sd card once again (have around 50gb of music), only this time having sorted it all through said mp3tag.
I've used both the stock HTC music player, Winamp, Doubletwist, PowerAmp and others, but noone seems to be able to load all of the artwork. It propably has something to do with the android media scanner, but I have no idea how or why, everything I've tried seems to fail: Clearing the media scanner cache, restarting the phone etc. Maybe it's due to some spacial limitation on 'new scannable media' in incoming media scans on startup, who knows.
All the artwork shows up beautifully in Winamp on my computer, but not on my Android. And it pisses me off, as I'm actually quite fond of the whole Android experience. But as a music lover it's just soooo annoying that it's so terrible at handling music and related artwork.
I could of course use e.g. PowerAmp to fill out missing artwork, but it'll propably only work for the app itself, and I have too many albums to be arsed to do it all over again. As said, I already did use so much time on embedding artwork to id3v2.3 tags, and I just don't understand why the phone can't load those tags and related artwork without problems.
Anyone tried the same? Something similar? Other thoughts?
I use Android 2.3.5 btw.

SAME HERE
BUMP! as well!!!
owning a droid razr here and i have the similar problem as well... BUT I CAN SEE MY ALBUM ART AT THE LOCK SCREEN
other apps such as doubletwist etc are able to show my album art but the STOCK music player doesnt even show a SINGLE album art...
i classify all my song in their albums like a;ways and tag them from mp3tag...
100% sure they are there but they cant seem to show up on the app
Hope ics update will come earlier and fix this???
BTW
my phone had successfully shown the album art the first time i uploaded them into my internal storage but now it cant seem to work as before any more
after syncing them to my 16gb sandisk microsdhc....
now syncing it to my interal storage doesnt work as well...

Bump. Even downloading using album art grabber, and setting it to overwrite the default artwork, it doesnt stick. Plus, everytime i restart, all my artwork needs reaaplying, everytime i copy/to from the card, the artwork messes up, and my playlists vanish. Album artwork has already been pre-embedded, but winamp wipes it on transfer, forcing me to use album artwork grabber app. Is there ANY way to make these changes stick?

Mediascape not showing/using Album Art

I was wondering if anyone else is having this problem and/or knows how to fix it.
I can see in Media Go that an album/song has album art attached to it (I can even see that there is album art in Windows explorer and iTunes). I've tried deleting/adding the art via 3rd party mp3 tagging software but that doesn't seam to make a difference.
I've tried copying the music using Media Go and dragging and dropping onto the memory card but the art still doesn't show on the phone. The funny thing is that it's not all albums, just a 'select' few.
I've also tried downloading the art via the phone itself however it either can't find the art or it's wrong.
Anyone know how to fix this?
I believe it has something to do with the aspect ratio of the album art. if it isn't a perfect square (500x500 or 450x450 for example) mediascape will not recognize the album art.
Thanks for the response, I've checked and that doesn't seam to be the case (some art which shows is not square and some art which doesn't show is square).
Also when Mediascape searches for album art it sometimes finds (wrong) old shaped album covers.
Any other ideas?
I had a problem like this before. Try this.
Go to your SD card and there's a folder called "albumthumbs" which stores a cached version of all the album covers. Delete all the files in this folder. Mediascape will then re-cache with all your updated album covers.
It fixed most of my albums but there are still a few that aren't right.
Hope that helps.
Nope, that didn't work either, in fact not the are more albums without art!
I had the same issue. I've not figured the reason, but I've worked around it removing the album art and adding it again with Mp3tag.
Did you try the "retrieve the album art" feature of mediascape ? (reading your post it's unclear whether or not you know about the feature)
It's really simple, just get a wi-fi connection, and it'll automatically read the album tags to get the proper album art.
I know it worked perfectly for me, also the phone didn't show any of the album art (even though some of my tracks had one) before doing that.
I tried re tagging my tracks with (Easy CD-DA Extractor) still no luck. Every single other player on my PC, stereo, Car etc. can read the the album art but not mediascape
This is my trick:
1. Clear all unnecessary tag from the file (eg: using eyeD3).
2. Inject album art to the file (eg: using albumart-qt).
3. Copy the file back to device.
4. Remove all Mediascape cache data (from Manage Apps menu).
5. Restart the device.
All the tools I use is running on Linux, but I'm sure there's counterpart tool on other platform.

I sprung for the album art grabber app from the market. It allows you search the net or add art from the SD card.

Tried this and no luck, either it couldn't find the album art or it was totally wrong (it looks like it searches by artist rather than by album).

I will look into this, I'm running Win 7 but I'm sure I can try the same process.

I'll give this a go also.
I've email Sony Ericsson support, I doubt I'll get a usefull answer but if I do I'll share it with the forum.
Thanks all!
UPDATE: Baggyb your trick with album art grabber app worked a charm.
Many thanks!
Sorry for the bump, but I might have found something that could help aswell.
I had the same problem. Mediascape wasn't able to put the correct album art on the songs I had on my X10.
Every other mediaplayer showed the correct album art, except for Mediascape.
Apparently all I had to do was add the song name at the album name and all of a sudden the correct album art was shown.
With Media Go that's quite easy.
Just put your songs in the map "music" of your X10 and go to Media Go.
Select the tab "Music" (@Phone Card) and you'll see your music currently on your X10.
Select a song and go to properties.
Click on the tab "artwork".
Add the albumart of your choice.
Then go to the tab "music" of properties.
Copy the title of the song and paste it @ "Album"
And you're done.
Seems a hassle to do this at every song, but it works so for me it was worth it.
Sony really makes it a hassle to put album art into the songs, they should come up with a solution and tell us the consumer in their user manual. The user manual really sucks as there is not much detail info into the product itself...
Just toss the correct album art into the album folder and name it albumart.jpg . It's very simple and works 100% for me.

DO you have only new music btw?
I noticed that the Retrieve Album Art feature in Mediascape takes a few days to get the latest album covers... for example The Final Frontier album cover was only added a couple of days ago...
Ok. I also fond of tagging all my mp3 with album arts. Have wasted like all days long just to make it looks very nice in MediaScape And now currently, all my songs shows album arts in MediaScape.
Always use MediaGo for managing your mp3, also i don't even bother where they put the mp3 in sdcard. I already passed the "organize things in folder manually" life after i struggle to organize my 4TB stuff in separate hard drives
Second is to assign the album art to Album Properties instead of individual songs.
For songs that you already transfer to X10 without Album Art, by adding album art to Media Go and do the transfer again won't update the album art in timescape. You go and delete the content of albumthumbs in sdcard, then it will usually work.
No rules about dimension ratio and resolution for album arts.
Possible Solution
I have a SE Xperia Mini Pro.
I discovered the same problem. Album art would not display for Albums previously copied. (This was after spending 3 days sorting out Media Go with Art!!!)
I found a fix using an App called "Album Art Grabber".
Once I run it on the phone, it automatically finds the album art linked in the MP3 file. Once I run media scape the art has reappeared. Appears to work.

[Q] [Q-Flyer] Music cover art per song.

Hello there my fellow XDA-ers,
So I bought a Flyer not too long ago, mainly for notes/browsing/video/music.
And all is working well, with the normal browser, opera browser and BSPlayer.
For music I use both the standard HTC Music Player (I'm on stock Gingerbread btw, but it's S-Off and rooted) and Spotify. Spotify is working well, but for local music I prefer to use the HTC Music Player, since I really like the look and layout in landscape. Spotify is just an oversized phone version (and only portrait, but I've heard of a fix for this) =\
But in the HTC Music Player, if I have... say.. compilation albums, it just shows 1 random album cover for every song in the compilation, even though all the songs (in the album/compilation) have a different album cover. I know that each song has a different cover art, since each song has its own correct art in iTunes, Spotify PC, Spotify Mobile and on my iPod Touch.
This is more of a general question about Android I think, since I have this problem on both my Sensation and Flyer.
I don't know much about how all this works, but all my files are 320kbps MP3's and have album art.
I google'd around a bit, but couldn't find anything that worked. So what could I do to make every song have its own cover art?
Also, YAY ICS is coming to the Flyer
If you have folder structure for your music and all songs from a compilation are in one folder and you have an album art file in that folder, then that's probably what player will show. I haven't used HTC's music player, but I know that this is what some players do.
Also you need to check info tags of the songs in compilation. If Album tag shows something like "Top Hits #1", then that's the album art that you're going to get. If tags are good and have correct Artist, Song, Album info, then album art is an easy fix. If tags are messed up, then you might have a problem.
I used to have a big collection of songs and many were made a decade ago, some from compilation CDs. Most of those files had tags messed in one way or another. When I decided to organize my music library I remember I used a tagging program first (maybe it was "tag&rename). In some files I had to fill in Artist and Song info from the filename. Files copied from iPods I had to rename, using Artist and Song info from the tag. I also erased "album" tags from messed up files (compilations), year and some other stuff. I replaced "album artist" field with "artist", so it doesn't show there something like "various artists". Then I used Winamp to pull up the tags automatically from the internet. It did pretty good job and fixed more than 90% of files. All above is done automatically and you don't have to do much there, other than telling program what to do next. After tagging is done, the best thing to do next(but not necessary) is to use another program (don't remember what I used) to pull the album art from the internet and store it in the music file itself. Last step is recommended, but not necessary, because most better android players (Like Player PRO) can get the art from the internet themselves.
Nowadays, music files usually tagged properly and if you ripped files from CD, many programs will tag songs properly when creating a file. You still might have messed up tags if it was a compilation CD.
You said that all your files have proper art (I assume in iTunes), so I assume that they are tagged properly and the only issue is the location of the song and art files.
I don't remember how iTunes organizes files. But I think it puts song files into album folder (which is in Artist folder) and puts album art file into album folder. When you copy songs into another compilation folder you loose the art. If files are tagged properly, then you can delete the album art file in the compilation folder and let good player (I recommend Player PRO) get all the art from the internet. HTC's Music player probably is not that smart. If you don't have art embedded into the file, then you need to make sure that folder structure is preserved. Songs and album art file from different albums need to be in different folders.
If you're on Linux, use "easytag". As previous post said, embedd the tags (even album art picture) inside the files, then it will use the album art from the file (not from the folder where the file is in). This way you can just copy files across platforms and not loose the album art.
Thanks for the responses guys, but concerning the tags and embedded art, everything is correct I think. I made the folders myself (artist > album > music files) and in the MP3 tags, the artist and album (compilation) are the same, so they appear to be from the same 'artist' and compilation/album. The album/cover art is also included/embedded in the MP3's themselves. Because I made the folders myself, there are no other .jpgs to overwrite the art from the MP3.
Sorry that I forgot to mention that.
But as far as I know, everything is clean and organized. It really seems like the music player is just randomly selecting one of the artworks, since if I remove the entire folder from my Flyer, then re-add the exact same folder from my PC, it will have another randomly selected artwork for every file.
One of the possible solutions I read about was to put every file in a separate folder inside the album folder. So it would be Artist>Album>SongFolder>Song. The files all still had the same artist and album in their tags, so in the player they were still organized in the same artist and album. But still it would select a random artwork embedded in one of the songs and use it for every song.
Sure it's not really that big of a deal for most people, but I do find it very annoying, since I really like all the different artworks (and the HTC Music Player) =\
If anyone knows a tablet optimized (or Flyer optimized, since well.. mine isn't Honeycomb xd) Music Player that doesn't have this problem, suggestions would be appreciated as well.

I know this is from January, but the album art is rlly bothering me so...
I just got my HTC phone and I have the same problem, every album without cover art has the same random one. I'm kinda a noob when it comes to phones so I'm not sure how to fix the issue but will downloading a different music player fix the problem? Or did you end up finding a way to fix it?

Probably not. Its sounds like the ID tags on your music files are screwed up. How do you organize and play music on your computer?
You might try one of these apps to fix the tags: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=fix+mp3+tag&c=apps

[Q] albumthumbs and missing album artwork

As I have found out by now, the folder that stores album artwork thumbs (Andoid/data/com.android.providers.media/albumthumbs) should be the one responsible for keeping album artwork used by the various music players. However, I seem to have problems with the folder storing all my thumbs. For some reason it only stores 25 thumbs, resulting in a very low amount on viewable album artworks in these music players.
I have tried retransfering my music to my SD-card, deleting the stored media and run the media scanner, I have even tried deleting the albumthumbs folder, but nothing seems to help. I might have to try to make a clean installation of android, but I really, really hope I don't have to go this far.
Now, I did make a weird discovery: After having deleted the folder and emptied the media storage, I opened the stock Android Music Player which immediately started searching for albums and artists, and in the early phase of this scanning it actually showed if not all, then at least almost all the artwork. Of course there wasn't that many albums to show since it had only began sweeping the media storage for thumbs. But as it progressed, almost all artwork went blank again, leaving only a narrow selection of viewable album art. Nevertheless I now know that it should be possible to show all the album artwork thumbs, but something blocks it, resulting in a limited number of viewable artwork.
I really don't know what the issue relies on, might be the media scanner or whatever.
Have anyone got any idea what this might be due to? I'm pretty sure that a lot of people who have artwork problems have issues with this folder as well, just not knowing it.

Album art not showing up

Wondering of anyone has any insight for resolving issue of album art not showing up (music plays fine) any music player (Google, Power Amp, etc) with the Samsung 10.1. Scanned some other posts but none were for the tab, were also from last year or longer and were of no help. Files are MP3 and transfering from PC with Windows Media player or from Amazon cloud. Seems to be random. Is there a way to update? Can't seem to figure it out. There seperate files under and Album folder but still some album art shows ou and sometimes not.
Thanks to anyone who might be able to shed some light.
I had the same problem and spent hours trying to figure it out! My problem was actually on the HTC One X but I suspect it's the same issue.
At first I thought it was probably an issue with some files cached somewhere because I'd moved a few things around and deleted and renamed some files, but after noticing I had the same problem with players other than the stock player, that pretty much ruled that out, but I still just couldn't figure out why no matter what I did, two of my 300ish albums were showing without artwork.
Eventually I figured out it was because Android didn't like something in my ID3v2 tags. Because most of my music is in OGG format this generally isn't a problem, but I've still got a handful of MP3 albums, two of which had this problem. The tracks in one of these albums had 'Encoded by iTunes' in the 'Encoded' field of the ID3v2 tag; removing this from the fields resolved the issue and brought back my artwork. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with the tags in the tracks in the other album, but removing the ID3v2 tags then adding them back in fixed the issue for that album too!
So I've still not got a clue why this causes a problem, because the ID3v2 tags weren't incorrect, but Android wasn't happy with them for some reason, even though the tracks still played fine.
I hope this helps someone else anyway - I'd be interested to know if it fixes the problem for others too
same problem
I have the same problem after installing walkman by thilinac
Any clue?

[Q] Google Play Music using a random picture from my phone

I like using Google play music but the application has been changing my album art around and i cant figure out how to change it back.
I saved a picture to my external SD card and Google music decided to tag all the Unknown Artists with the picture, but it only seems to show up in Google Music.
I have multiple media players installed and only some of them recognize the art and display it.
I have tried editing the tags but its like the images are not there like since the image was in the forlder it pretty much overwrote things.
I have cleared the cache and data for google music rebooted my device with no luck.
What are my options at this point to get this picture out the tags and off my phone.

Hi
I too have a very similar problem. Have transferred 250+ songs (no albums, just individual songs) from my 'puter to the external SD card of my phone (Galaxy S3). Each cover for each song is embedded (correctly!) in the ID3 tag of each mp3. The songs play and covers display corrrectly when using a PC-based music player eg. Windows Media Player.
However, Google Play Music tags each song with the same cover tag (seemingly a random one from the 250+ songs). So...I deleted them all and started again. This time, I transferred a single mp3 and this displayed correctly (ie. with the ID3 embedded cover art). However, as soon as I transferred other songs, they too displayed with the cover art of the first transferred mp3. I too tried clearing the chace and data of the app but to no avail. I'm stumped..
Does anyone have any ideas to solve this? It's incredibly frustrating!
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help..:good:
