If I understand correctly, the Nook Color does not have a locked bootloader, hence custom rom capability. The Nook Tablet however does have a locked bootloader, and I have read that this is apparently due to Netflix capability.
Just read on Engadget that the Color is getting a multimedia update, bringing Netflix as a feature. What I am looking forward to finding out is if this update will lock the Color's bootloader because of Netflix. If not, this whole bootloaders-locked-due-to-Netflix myth is busted.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/12/nook-color-gets-multimedia-upgrade-further-blurs-the-tablet-bat/
Netflixs HD requires the locked not SD Netflix so if the colors new update can play netflix in standard def but not high def then there is something to this
Netflix HD is the theory as to why the bootloader is locked. The question is whether or not the update to the Nook Color is Netflix or Netflix HD.
NT's locked bootloader is hardware-based, which doesn't exist for the NC. Evidence points to that as requirement for Netflix HD certification. Nook Color won't get Netflix HD, since it can't play HD videos regardless.
The worst that can happen is that value-add services (Netflix, Hulu+, et al) are tied to some software-based encryption, which stops working when rooted. This is the case for Amazon VOD. That's unlikely for Netflix/Hulu+, since as paid services it's in the vendors' interest to make these as widely available as possible.
Anyway, it doesn't matter for the NC. Its main uses are as an e-reader, which will never be obsolete, and as a repurposed (CM7/9) device, for which the B&N updates are irrelevant. The NC is not fast enough to be a good multimedia device regardless, so a multimedia update means little.
Edit: From the NC forum, all the old tools still work, including the re-root.

I am happy with my Nook Tablet with HD Netflix HD Hulu Plus, BUT I got my eye on the Prime. Will the Prime be able to have these 2 apps working without jumping through hoops??
Sent from my Nook Tablet using Tapatalk
Netflix will run fine as it will support 3.2 and 4.0.1+ for sure. Hulu Plus? Most likely.
That's totally up to Netflix and Hulu. I think that with we might be able to use them out of hte box with HC, but the big question is if they would work on ICS. Given their track record of making slooow changes, I'd wager we might have to wait for ICS versions to work.
..hey from where did you got this application for the tablet ??
because i have installed this newer android ICS update and i am not able to install those applications however !
I came from the Kindle Fire to a rooted Nook Tablet for the better specs and greater capabilities. I use the Kindle app from the Play Store to show all my Amazon digital content. I am now noticing that a number of magazines (like Automobile and Motor Trend) are missing. It appears the issue is the publishers DRM controlling what devices can see their content. (MUST CONTROL DRM RANT... MUST FIGHT IT... HATE DRM... DRM IS EVIL...) Has anyone found a way around this? Is there an APK from a Kindle FIre that can be installed on my Nook to get all the content THAT I PAID FOR?

Not all magazines are viewable on Kindle app. I looked at Amazon, and Motor Trend is only available to Kindle devices. There's a drop down on the "buy" page that will tell you whether or not it's available for Kindle app.
Same goes for Nook. I get a couple of mags that are only viewable on Nook. I'm in CM9 most of the time, and have to boot back into Nook 1.4.3 to see them.

This is correct. My alternative has been to buy the magazines I want from Google, rather than Amazon. Turns out their selection is also pretty good. Amazon's loss due to DRM = a competitor's gain.

Hello, I hope this is the right place for these questions. I've been surprised when I first saw this tablet. The only thing that isn't convincing me is the Amazon OS. Today it looks like a root exploit has been found ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542456 ) Now my questions are:
Is it possible to install the Google play store?
With Silk can I normally download files from browser and read them? (like pdfs or winrar archives)
Can I transfer files from the computer with the usb cable and read them from the kindle, like films or apks? (maybe a stupid question because it is android based OS, but it's the first time I'm buying an amazon tablet so better ask before..) Thanks guys
I'm having the exact same thoughts as well. About to make a tablet buying decision between the Sony Z and this. The Amazon software is the only reason I would not go with it instead

Let's see what people, who already bought it, thinks about it
WIth root, installing the Play store is possible and will work fine if you have all the right framework files installed. This has been confirmed in the general and android development sections.
Silk will allow you to download files just fine.
You can access the Kindle just like any other Android device when plugged in via USB. That is to say, it's drag and drop file management. I have sideloaded MX Player for video playback. It's my favorite player and I've successfully watched MKV, avi, mpg, m4v files with audio encoded in DTS and Dolby 5.1. DTS decoding requires a custom codec that's available on XDA.
PDF's work just fine. I'm using EZPDF and Moon Reader+, but you can take your pick. I don't think they can be view from inside the browser if that's what you're asking. I have Chrome sideloaded and use it as my primary browser.
The Kindle has a setting to allow third party apps to be installed just like any other Android device so APK's can be installed easily.
All in all, the HDX is almost perfect. If root access will fix the customization issues (wallpapers and widgets) along with Play Store access this will be the best device on the market.
It has the best combination of screen size, screen resolution, thickness, weight, battery life, and power. Snapdragon 800 is as good as it gets for now and really make this device fly. The resolution and color production is as good as it gets confirmed by Displaymate testing and from personal experience.
If Amazon had allowed Play Store access out of the box, it would the unquestioned best tablet on the market. Thanks to XDA, we will have it shortly.
EDIT: I have the HDX 8.9

I will buy it tomorrow you convinced me I will keep you updated as soon as it arrives! You got the 16 gb version?
No. I got the 64gb version with no ads. I need all the memory I can get.

Do you know if it supports OTG? I would enjoy connecting a flash drive with a microusb-usb adapter..
Well, I just took the plunge and bought a 32gb HDX 8.9
I have zero desire to use any of Amazon's services, but the hardware on this is so perfect for what I am looking for.
I do hope that the discovered root method will lead to recovery, and custom roms, but I am not expecting that to happen either.
After looking at what can be done with apps and everything, I can probably get by on stock. If not, there is always the 30 day return window!

Personally I don't have a desire for custom roms on this device. It is stable with great battery life. Root gets me enough of the features and customization I want. Plus I get to keep the Amazon services which would most likely break with custom roms. But I'll be excited to see if Cyanogen or Paranoid Android supports this device.

As far as I know, In Canada we are limited by what Amazon can offer to us. We certainly don't get the full experience.
What specific features does root allow?

Hi guys... I am new to this forum and therefore couldn't post to the developer forum, even though I am one.
There is this Kickstarter campaing "Superscreen" which promises to give you a low-cost, tablet-like device, which streams your phones display to the 10" "Superscreen". They make several interesting claims on their FAQ section:
- the devices uses no mirroring... they seem to use their own streamingprotocol from within an app, you have to install on your phone (no Chromecast or something like that involved).
- the stream displayed on the tablet part is not bound to the phones resolution! So they claim that a 4k video on a 1080p phone will be displayed as 2k on the tablet (which is 2k) (and I understand that they do not use upscaling)
- you can actually use your phone to do different things than the tablet is doing (so it isn't just streaming)... they call it "dual screen" or something like that
- less interesting, just FYI: The seem to establish a wifi-direct connection between phone and superscreen
Now I am wondering how is that possible and which APIs the Superscreen app is using (they claim it all works on Android 4)?
- I can't find anything in the Android API to grab the whole screen content and to stream it (except for chromecast maybe, which these guys don't use)
- How can the "Superscreen App" convince another video player app and the Android system to render at a different resolution then the phone's?
- How can they render apps offscreen to enable this dual screen thing?
I would love to hear your ideas, as I have no clue how they do it without any rooting and on Android 4...
EDIT: I watched some youtube videos about the product and (while it still may be a prototype) 1) regular apps definetely seem to be upscaled (opposed to what the Kickstarter claims specifically for videos) and 2) there is considerable lag it seems, not suprisingly...
Welcome to the whole forum, I'm new here and I hope to find a way to solve a problem I have with my android tv box MX9 pro. The first thing I did to whatch Prime Video was to install it from the play store. The application works, allows me to log in and gives me all the movies, tv series available. But when I want to watch a video content, whatever it is, the movie starts for about a second then closes (crashes) and returns to the home page of the chosen content.
Then i tried to install the version for Android TV, obviously not through the play store, and even in this case I log in regularly. When I want to see a video content, the video does not start but constantly remaining the buffering circle.
Finally I tried to see if I could bypass the application by going through KODI and I installed the Sandmann79 add-on for prime video and, although with a different procedure, I regularly access my Prime account. When I want to start watching a video content, after setting the standard kodi player, this seems to start regularly, the time bar advances but the screen remains blank and nothing is heard.
At this point I have exhausted all the options available to me and I am forced to ask for help in this forum.
Is it really impossible to play the videos of the first videos with this device?

I don't have this device but, I'm just wondering if the following will also be helpful for what you are looking for. Don't be afraid to ask for some member guidance within it too.

Good Luck!

UNLESS asked to do so, PLEASE don't PM me regarding support. Sent using The ClaRetoX Forum App on my SM-G900T device.
Thank you, i had already Read that post and i tried the last apk 4.10.3 of [email protected] but using that apk, i got an error of internet connection when i tried to watch a video. What i am trying now is to set VLC as external default player in kodi to make sure that all the videos launched by kodi are opened with vlc that always reads everything. There is an xml file to be integrated into a specific folder of kodi but then, when I want to open the video, it gives me a message that there is an external player but I do not open it then, yet, I can not say if this additional method it works or not.
Anyway the procedure suggested in the post you conseiled me doesn't work, at least for me.
Thanks Anyway.
Rockchip, the chipset company already fixed the problem of Amazon Prime Video not working over a year ago on similar devices.
The manufacturer of your tv box must have really outdated firmware and zero support since they didn't fix it.
But Amazon also blocks the tablet app from working on devices with traces of AndroidTV as in your case and the AndroidTV app only works on full AndroidTV devices having Playready 3 DRM, which your device doesn't have, thus the error with the AndroidTV app.
You can use the Kodi addon, it works correctly, check if your are using the latest version and login from the addon's settings and wait, also make sure the InputStream addon is enabled and changed to InputStream and not Kodi or something else.
Thank you. I don't think My Android Device is out dated because received Android 8. Anyway if the problem is with drm 3 no way. Not even with kodi works, i tried all i could try. I installed addon prime video of sandmann79 and enabled inputstream but i only get The movie starting with no image neither sound, only White screen and time bar going on. Therefore i wanted to try an external player as vlc.....
I think i can't go on anymore, the Device doesn't send anymore video Signal to my tv so i can't anymore display it on the tv..... Definitively broken.
At the end of all i got a conclusión that only a tv box is worthy of bringing this name, ie nvidia shield tv, albeit with all its flaws. I had one and despite very few apps were on the play store (Chrome on all), did not have an on / off button, did not display all the shortcuts in the app section, had absolutely no such problems. I gave it back because I did not like these things but I did not think that these Chinese boxes were such a crap. I tried h96 max +, mx9 pro and both of them stopped after two days of work. I think to back to buy a shield tv, the only box worked fine with prime video, Netflix, without lags thanks to his powerful hardware.
