Android ROM/firmware/modem/kernel terms? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Sorry if its a rather simple question but can someone please either explain or point me in the right direction on the different terms used on Android phones especially when it comes to custom roms, kernels, firmware etc
What do these terms mean, what do they do and what can be updated individually or what comes part of other software/firmware/ROM etc..
Also which terms are used interchangeably but mean the same...
Apologies for asking this simple question and thanks in advance as I'm confused to what exactly i can update, in what order etc! BTW I'm using an old miui build and i thought i was running an old siya kernel? I still want to stick with miui ROM....

basical the following is:
baseband = modem is the radio that allows you to make calls.
kernal = firmware which contains the apps and other controls.
build = Rom is firmware, modem, bootloader all under one file.

Kernel the very base of the OS communicates between cpu etc and OS .Same as Linux or Windows kernel
Firmware usually a full package includes apps kernel modem OS and csc .
Modems are interchangeable for most country's
Kernels are interchangeable .

As we all know that the ICS update on the 10th of March, will I be able to update OTA update with this current baseband? It bcame LPH after flashing litening rom then reverted back to previous rom using rom manager however the baseband remained LPH. For OTA/KIES update to work, do i need to flash stock rom first?

Can anyone help me ?
Bit of patience might help. Bumping your thread an hour after you asked your initial question isn't likely to endear you to anyone here
Yes. If you want to get ICS via Kies, you'll need to go back to stock.
Updating through KIES if you are a power user isn't so good to be honest. For example, KIES force you to use the original ROMs baseband version if you want to receive firmware updates (also correct CSC and so on). Newest baseband doesn't always means the best one. I have compared XXKI4 to XXLPH and surely I've got better battery life-performance balance in KI4 So i can recommend you using Mobile Odin/Odin for flashing .. more flexibility to be honest
Baseband is not relevant .
Custom kernel is .
Kies updates those phones that have original firmware codes anything else and its a maybe.
OTA no rollout on that so far but supposed to be working for ICS .

I had this problem before. Updating to the latest modem (XXELLA) may help, but you may need to wipe data/cache and reflash your ROM as well. Reflashing is what worked for me.
XELLA is not the latest

This thread is 18mths old, fyi.
You don't have to replace that chip, you can either "reflow" it (if you know what you're doing), or put a small piece of credit card or something to put pressure on it.

Thanks for your suggestion...however I knew that windows 8 will make some nuissance...so rooted my phone using windows 7 on a virtual pc...however I have a entire different question for you where you can definitely help me understand the method of choosing a custom ROM, Kernel and Bootloader...could you please tell me how the cocktail for this different hardware/software works...I have read the entire description on different threads of what their job is and how they work...however I am still confused with how to mix a ROM, Kernel and a Bootloader..??
I have succesfully rooted my phone right now and would like to know about the next step!!
cyanogen mod roms and the roms based on cm requires unlocked bootloader ; unlocking bootloader will void ur warranty and u will loose drm keys forever

Thanks in advance for the help !!
If it is an I9300 then download one for your location / network.
Higher version yes read the forum 4,3 posts .
But be 100% sure you have I9300 model not a US version .

Hey JJEgan,
Thanks a lot for the reply. I am 100 % sure I have the I9300 version as whenever I boot that is the model number that pops up. Plus does not have any of the US carrier logos which normally are present on the back of the US versions. So could you provide me with any links on how to upgrade to a higher version ?

U have to search tat for urself. Google search "Leaked 4.3 rom for gs3 international" BACK UP ur efs FIRST BEFORE FLASHING. IMPORTANT.

Give a thank if i helped you.
Go to settings, about device, and look under model number. If it doesn't say i9300, then search for the forum that is for that model.
