Hey so I just bought a used Verizon Galaxy 10.1 and noticed things got pretty slow after a day of use (not rooted) so I went looking into what might be going on. I assumed it was a memory thing and when I did a "cat /proc/meminfo" I was surprised to see only 740912 kb reported for MemTotal. Aren't these devices supposed to have 1GB not 741mb?
Does anyone else see the same number?
think it might not even report the ammount of ram that android itself takes up, but dunno.
In taskmanager there is 723 MB of RAM.
My task manager reports 724M RAM.
Maybe the rest is reserved ?
The rest of the RAM is dedicated to the GPU.

Perfect, thanks for answering. I had a feeling something like that might be going on but wanted to verify.
I think I need to ditch my verizon version and get a wifi only. I want to root this but there's way more development going on for wifi only version.
Yeah the Wi-Fi model is miles ahead in xda support. Roms themes etc.

This script was not written for high end devices such as this one... Or anything with a dual core CPU... You might see a difference using a single core but this script was written for Ram management on lower end devices and devices with little ram... Using on a 1.5Ghz dualcore phone with 1GB of ram might imo be a waste of time...

I used to use this on my G2x, my quadrants and all benchmarks JUMPED with it, and worked REALLY well for it. But with the Amaze (I've already used it etc etc) I don't see any difference, the amaze's amount of ram is probably a big contributor to that fact but also probably the version of Android also, as my G2x was running 2.3.3....

Doesn't matter.
"Gurus" always say the same thing... last time it was that it won't do anything on a device with 512MB of ram...
How much ram does a SGS II have, smart guy?
Actually, seems the specs are close to this device... so here you go...

It's nice to see that people still don't get the concept of "work smarter, not harder" because it makes it easier for those that do work smarter to get ahead.

Yikes! Just got my brand New Galaxy Tab last Tuesday and now I've been informed that there is a Note 10.1 around the corner.
The "only" difference I've seen so far is that it will pack a 1.4 processor, stock ICS, and external sd card slot.
Since I got this one in Costco is returnable. However, I think the Note will start @ $500 (maybe more...)
I dunno... You guys think is worth the wait?
It's just that I have a SGS2 and is sooo much faster than this Tab. Will flashing a custom ROM to this tab make a difference in speed?
Thank you for taking my question.

You missed the whole point huh, the pressure sensitive stylus?
Value is a subjective thing though, only you know what you need out of the device. Going with the note will surely mean a longer wait for development of custom ROMs. If the added features make up for that as well as the delay between launch and shipment then go for it.
Me personally i find the idea of the stylus intriguing but then the ram limitation (the 1gb of ram, not sure if this is an Android system restriction at this time but I'm guessing so) is cause for pause for me. We all look at lag critically and i always wonder how additional system ram would improve that. If increasing it on a standard PC improves performance to a degree then surely on a tablet it would as well. Of course that would add additional cost but I'm sure many would spring for premium models with more memory. I bring up this issue because of Samsung partnering with adobe on the inclusion of Photoshop touch with the note. Moving towards marketing tablets for graphic production using the stylus needs to come along with the ability to do it well without the lag and unresponsiveness shown in the demos. Surely there are driver optimizations that can help yes but anyone who uses Photoshop regularly to do production knows that ram is hugely important.
Baby steps though, the note is certainly a welcome addition to the tablet arena. If an LTE one comes out in the next year is certainly consider it.

Return it and keep saving to get the galaxy note 10.1. I read a couple weeks back they were holding of release til june to switch out the dual core processor for a quad core processor. I think it would be worth returning any tablet to get the galaxy note 10.1 if this rumor is true.

I think I remember the EVO 3d with more ram. Like 720 something.
Well, there are plenty of hidden system settings. The number that you see in Task Manager or Settings is how much RAM that can be used for anything. The ram you do not see available is being used by things that are UNABLE to be removed from RAM because they are essential to the system running. That is the reason why we see nothing close to 1GB.same thing goes for computers, you can either see Installed Memory or you can see Usable Memory. Installed Memory on LTevo would be 1GB and Usable Memory on Stock would be around 670MB(IIRC) for me.

I see now it makes more sense now

I noticed this also, coming from the EVO 3d (also with 1gb of ram) vs the 4gLTE. IIRC the 3d shows 804mb total vs 680mb. I figured it had to do with the 3d running gingerbread/sense 3.5 vs the 4gLTE running ICS/sense 4.0. My friend who has a galaxy nexus also with 1gb of ram, shows around the same amount of ram in the task manager.. either way I am absolutely amazed with this phone, not one issue or hiccup so far..
Which one is better?
I think quad-core is a waste if there are no games or app optimized for it. I'd rather have 2gb ram so I can have more ram hogging app open and less automatic app closing.

I'm a little iffy about upgrading .. now on G2, 1.2 with 1Gb ram. Is it worth spending the money for only .3 and 1 extra gig of ram?

If you asked the guy with the exploding quad core I bet he says the dual core with 2gb lol......... But seriously, I'd say you get more use from more ram, for at least the next 6 months anyways, till all the devs start updating their apps to optimize the 4 cores. But I'd still rather have more ram really.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I was asking myself the same question. Im going to go with the us variant, since there arent many apps (if any) optimized for 4 cores yet. I prefer the extra gig though because i run widgets like there no tomarrow
rather have the 2gb of ram...
ram is usually the bottleneck in computers
I like having a suped up dual core with TWO gigs of ram. And LTE , when it's available of course.

So I'm coming from a Samsung Infuse, and honestly, this phone cannot piss me off even more than I already am. I'm talking about constant resets (stuck power button), terrible GPS reception, UNBEARABLE LAG even with the latest paranoid android, and finally, messed up APN settings which bares the phone useless since I can't have any service on it! So now you understand of my struggles with my current phone. I'm in search for something that I can rely on and won't have even the slightest bit of lag after 2+ years of owning it.
Now, I've been doing some research on some phones (gs3, htc one x, htc one, gs4) And I come here to find out your honest opinion on the GS3 since the time you've owned it. Should I save some cash buying a GS3 or a One X, or are there some sort of problems with these phones that have ticked you off that I should consider paying the extra buck and looking at the 2013 flagships instead?

S3 have bad multitasking management, huge delay when you open dialer, mms and galery app.

All i'm saying is to get a phone with 2Gb of ram. S4 or even the S3 with 4G is fine. The N4 is subject to different considerations (do you want an sdcard, etc) but it's a powerhouse too.
While the S3 nearly doesn't lag at all, not having multitask isn't fun and you'll definitly have a better experience if your apps aren't closing all the time due to lack of memory. This annoys me to no end and i'm replacing it whenever an oportunity arrises.
