Wifi Hotspot - HTC Amaze 4G

To any Amaze users; Are you able to to use the wifi hotspot without the $15/mo fee? The Sensation has it, and I can use it freely, but it is being exchanged for an Amaze due to dust accumulating under the screen.

Just like Teo said, yes you can.
Just a matter of changing the APN and deleting another one.
Let me find the thread on that for you.
*Here it is and I believe page 4 has the instructions.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301104&highlight=wifi+hotspot

Only for a short time it doesn't look for the apn, T-Mobile knows your using the hot spot and there is an amount that it lets you use before forcing the feature on you, although I've never found how much it is that it lets you use but I can tell you it indicates to us what percentage you have used of what it allows you to. Changing apns might work but only until they decomission some of the older apns and it doesn't work for everybody I seen people get mad because they can't access web because they are using an old apn or because they can't use hot spot for free anymore lol

Lol employees get it free, no they are aware I see it on accounts all day but just use it while you can, they will crack down on it harder soon i assume but u always got third party options anyway

ill say this man, store reps for the most part aren't very knowledgeable they are trained to sell to average joe, they know nothing about how it works on the back end. Most of them would try to sell you the galaxy S 2 and tell you its totally superior to the amaze. On the back end when you use hot spot it notes your account in 25% increments that you have used a certain allotment of tethering why T-Mobile allows free use of it who knows but its great for customers I just tell people it lets you try it pretty well but will eventually tell you that you have to pay to continue using it we never been told why it lets people use it free for a bit and I've tried looking into it. If at&t ever takes over it will probably change seeing how they are pretty strict about tethering for now enjoy

I think you've mistaken, we don't use a different apn, we just add a new apn with the same apn... the epc one.
we delete the two original apns so it doesn't switch back. There's something extra in the stock APNs that causes the tethering block (someone mentioned it somewhere but i find it easier to just delete and add a new one)
so unless they block the epc one, which is their main one at the moment, then we're free to use it. besides xboarder already has a workaround for it too.
But if you're not rooted and you're on a fresh factory restore, the adding apn method works. ONLY on fresh factory resets though, before you try toggling the wifi tether. this is what a few others and i discovered roughly a month ago

Epc is the current one that we use at T-Mobile so that would be wrong, they can track which ever one they like point being that it doesn't matter what you do anyone gets free use whether you change it or not, either way being rooted lets you use wireless tether so it doesn't matter. But I've personally seen people get blocked on different apns, I even went as far as having it researched for someone who claimed to not be using what they came back with was interesting.

good thing i still have my rooted nexus one.. probably use that for hotspot? just gonna share something.. when we moved to our new house i lost my internet.. connected my ps3 to my nexus via hotspot and played call of duty mw2, played it for a couple of hours then tmobile dropped me down to 2G.. talk about large mount of data.. hehe..

not exactly sure what you're pointing out is wrong. I'm actually confused about the whole run on sentence lol. Not sure if you realize that they originally block it straight out of the box. You can't use it at all. So no, it isn't free use whether you change it or not for the Amaze. You HAVE to add a new apn if you want to use it on stock.
we've been discussing for a while now so i don't know if you even tried using your wifi hotspot yet for your amaze because this device is not like other devices where you can use it straight out of the box. and yes if you don't add the new apn, it gets blocked after it reaches a certain point.
I understand what you're saying about ppl using all the other available tmobile apns, but we don't need to do that for the amaze. What you're saying relates to ALL devices, so you're making ppl skeptical about wifi hotspot on the amaze. Like the guy before me saying to use his nexus, it would relate to his nexus too.

Let's clarify this.
With the release of the Amaze and GS2 they have changed the way tethering is recognized. On previous phones it SHOULD catch you at 200mb (think of it like a preview) and then throw an upsell message. Yes, employees were not caught as they have different permissions but they were supposed to get the upsell as well. With the new phones they WILL get the upsell (trust me, I talk to upset employees every week that got one of the above mentioned phones and now have to pay). Employees do NOT get to tether for free, we are supposed to pay for the $14.99 tether feature like everyone else. If you have an amaze that is not rooted and has not had the apns changed and you can tether, then it is a fluke.
The amaze seems to block this through the apn settings. NOT the apn itself. The original work around was to just delete the apn type field and it would work. Seems to work better if you create a new apn with JUST epc.tmobile.com and delete the old ones. Of course, if you're rooted, most roms have fixes implemented so you don't have to do anything.
With both devices, if left completely alone and without the tether feature, you will get the upsell message immediately. No 200mb "buffer."

^^ yes finally a support, end thread.

Is there a way to trick the Amazon appstore re:Wifi Only downloads?

So I'm using my TBolt as my primary internet right now, as my connection hasn't been hooked up yet at my new place, but I'd love to be able to download apps that Amazon thinks are wifi only, like today's game. Is there a way to make the Appstore think I'm on wifi? Probably a stretch, but curious.

Just go ahead and get the app. Even if you can't download it now, at least it will show you purchased it and you can then download it once you get a chance to hookup to wifi.
Yeah i dont understand this whole Wifi only thing they shouldn't be worried about my data charges 4G is here and I've downloaded way bigger files over 3G.

What is funny is that my 4g LTE is faster than any WiFi i have been on lately. The only reason I even have WiFi at home at this point is for my TIVO and VOIP Phone that is connected to my home alarm.
would downloading through a proxy help? are they checking ip or connection type?
yeah... they should really disable wifi only for phones with 4G.
3G i guess i can see the argument but LTE is faster than most home networks.

Amazon has some apps that are "wifi" only downloads. Those will fail to download if you are not on wifi.
in settings in the appstore app u can change it to allow apps as big as 20mb to dl over cellular data. larger than that and u still have to use wifi. Still the default is really low (like 1mb or 5mb).
Why not just visit your local McDonalds or Starbucks or whoever has free Wifi and download the app? Heck, go outside, I'm sure there are plenty of unsecured networks around you can use

That is true, however, at this point in time, LTE is a very small portion of network usage compared to 3G, so we have to remember that when Amazon limits large downloads to wifi only, they are probably looking at the user base as a whole. That will probably change soon as more LTE devices come out.

Again, this is probably because they have to "play nice" with all the carriers out there, so they don't want to be accused of causing too much traffic on any carriers wireless network.
The Amazon app store is becoming more and more popular, since they offer a free app a day and since it's not "Google", they are probably making sure they don't get anyone mad by driving up bandwidth usage.

Don't forget 4G for everyone else is around 1-2 Meg and Verizon has the fastest LTE available. You'd probably need a separate Amazon App for VZW customers, but your right it sucks! I've run into apps like Co-Pilot that refuse to download anything unless it's via Wifi.

Eh.. I know you pulled that 1-2 meg figure from your ass. Sprint has the lowest 4g at 10Mbps, TMobile and AT&T are at 42Mbps.
Anyhow, this is annoying of Amazon to do. There should be a way to change or disable just like most other apps offer.

Please don't believe the marketing department. Show me an AT&T or TMobile device that actually sees that speed. While the 1-2 stated by the previous poster is false, 42 is equally false and I can't speak for sprint. LTE is superior to HSPA+ and wimax or the other carriers wouldn't be planning LTE rollouts in the future.
Back on topic, Amazon is just perpetuating the nanny-statism that is ruining this country. We have to be protected from ourselves. We can no longer be trusted to read our contracts and understand what we have. This is also helped along by lawsuit stupidity. If Amazon didn't prevent people from blasting through their data packages, some idiot would sue them. Thus the rest of us who can actually read and understand a contract suffer.

? About roms

So I just got a call from sprint saying I've been roaming too much (because I don't have services where I live) but they said they have to follow the rules and then she said they'll let me out of my 2 years for free but the thing to if I flash my phone to cricket can I still use the roms or will have I have to change something in them?

I know there are threads around this forum regarding how to flash to other carriers. Perhaps it would be worth your time to read through those.
I know from what I've seen, some settings need to be tweaked in the ROMs.
Definitely for MMS and sometimes for internet data (proxy settings). Perhaps also for voice mail, especially if there is a visual voicemail service. Also, sometimes other carriers have special software for their Android devices they might be able to provide you.
As a slight side note, I have noticed the EVO 3D roams quite a bit more than any of my previous Sprint Android devices (Moment, EVO, and NS4G). Even with an Airave, my EVO 3D will sometimes prefer to roam .. kind of odd.
Good luck!

question about data plan on Amaze.

So, after much thought I decided to keep the phone and give it a second go and might sell my 9700 to make some cash. However, as I am not sure 100% of this, I thought that maybe I could keep both. Questions is, when I had an iPhone, I also had a my 9700 and had of course a BB plan. Even if the phone was running on EDGE only, I still could pop my SIM and check the web, even if sloooooooow. How come I can't web brows or anything on the Amaze? Is it because of the 4G?
Thanks, I am basically trying to figure out if I can have one data plan where I can use both phones, possibly.

The carrier may have made changes on the network to prevent you from using a non-Blackberry device on a BES or BIS data plan.
I had an issue in the past using a SIM from a BlackBerry (broken) while waiting on a replacement in a Sony Ericsson, within two days I built up $140 worth of data charges due to an "unauthorized" device accessing data through a BlackBerry plan...weird but it was a learning experience to say the least.

If using a BB plan or grandfathered plan, 4g phones does not work. I use to have one of those 5.99 plans. didn't work with any 4g phones. They are able to detect what phone you're using and block it or something.
I noticed the very first time i used it, the phone's data worked, but then about an hour or 2 in, it stopped working.
I am on a Value Plan, and I could switch between BB and iPhone without issues. I think it might be the new SIM I got when I got the Amaze. Possible?

no it's not the sim, I'm on the old sim and it works fine. You need to be on a 4g plan to get 4g with 4g devices. The old plans and bb plans do not work. They block it somehow.

its because blackberry uses real basic apns that you can program into the iPhone and the amaze does not use those the combination of the bis blackberry server apns will prevent it unlocked phones can be made to function on almost any apn but locked devices cannot unless you try manually changing the apns. I'd just stick with one phone so your mms and internet work right without having to change them all the time

Something interesting I found out about T-mobile Wifi Hotspot Block

Ok so when I use my hotspot, I get the T-mobile page that comes up and says "T-Mobile Smartphone Hotspot yada, yada" unless I change the UserAgent. However, I was rooting a person's phone (also on T-Mobile), and once I rooted it and installed tethering, his worked flawlessly without any even having to change the UA. So I said "just for the heck of it, let's change SIMs", so we swap SIMs. So I put his SIM in my phone, and guess what, it worked flawlessly with no blocks. I found out he was on the $50 Pre-Paid 4G plan, and I'm a shared unlimited 4G data contract plan with my Girlfriend. So I guessing maybe they are blocking Hotspot on Contract plans, but not Pre-Paid Plans. I don't know if this was discussed before, but I thought it was interesting. What you guys think.

The $50 Monthly 4G plan throttles your data to EDGE speeds after 100mb.
The $60 Monthly 4G plan does the same at 2.5GB.
So if you 'use alot of data' you just get choked to dialup speed automatically - weather it's with your phone or with tethering...
If they are doing an HTTP-proxy-based tether-block now (eg, if it looks for user-agent strings), just use TOR or CoDEEN to get around that.

Anyway to stay 4G in a 4G LTE area?... Let me explain why...

Ok. So I have always just had 4G in my area until recently. I have the APN info to run unthrottled. I have an unlimited data plan and I use my phone for tethering my computer and my xboxs at home. Since it is now LTE now my UNTHROTTLED, APN switches on and off randomly and eventually knocks me back to the regular ATT PTA APN. I want to find a way to lock my phone to 4G only so I can stay on the unthrottled APN so I can at least have 2mbps instead of being throttled down to 500kbps a quarter of the way through the month. Which makes it practically impossible to play xbox games online or stream a movie, Download anything is a headache now. The worst part about it is even the LTE maxes out at 5mbps where I live anyways so it's not like I'm getting 21+ like I do in other LTE areas. Is there anyway around this or should I invest in an Android 4G only phone and just use it while at home? Thanks for any help that someone could give me.
Excessive data use always gets throttled. No way around it. I'm not saying "excessive use", at&t is.
They easily track usage by your sim card and IEMI, so APN settings don't matter.
Actually.....
Actually. With the APN I had it never got throttled. I was doing 46gigs+ a month. Never ever got throttled until it knocked me up to LTE and made my phone skip the un throttled APN.

46GBs? It's about time you did get throttled. 4G and LTE APN's should both be throttled APNs. Try the 3G APN.
I agree, save some bandwidth for the rest of us. I don't know how you haven't had your account closed down yet, or why you weren't throttled using a particular APN for so long. Must have just been network goofiness, because like rangercaptain said, that's not how AT&T tracks you for throttling anyway.
Edit: Moving to a 3G APN shouldn't matter either. Nor would being on a 2G or 3G-only tower. No matter what I'm connected to, I'm still limited to 5GB/month before getting throttled, because that's where grandfathered LTE plans are set. Doesn't matter if I'm actually using LTE or not, it's per-plan.
46+ Gb? Really???? Unbelievable! No, really. Unbelievable. You must mean 4.6 Gb because you'd be turned off, or at least you'd be getting communications from your carrier. I think either you are telling stories or you don't really know what you are talking about.
Johnus is 100% correct for AT&T. You get 5 Gb unthrottled per unlimited plan. Doesn't matter if you consume that 5 Gb using LTE, 4G, 3G, or string and soup cans.
I'm serious. I was getting months of 46 and more gigs without being throttled using one specific APN. The weird thing is now that yesterday I cut my phone on and all my APNs were gone except the default. They don't mess with me because the last time they tried to take me off unlimited for tethering I caused a big scene and kept on getting my call transfered up to a higher and higher management denying the fact that I did it and threatened them with a lawsuit. I already have a FCC complaint set up against them for throttling since it was never notified of agreed to a change in my plan. I was using a 4G APN that had what looked like corporate **** on it because I to this day can't find the info I had that I put in to get away with it. Now that it's LTE now it cuts 4G to completely off to 4G not allowing me to stay online longer than 15mins before it shuts down. That's all erased somehow now. My tethering file is deleted and I use wifitether app to do my tethering and have not been caught while tethering since I did that over 6months ago and for 6months I have been using about 50g a month

I guess they won.
It's far from over. I'm over 6gigs now and not throttled. Since using the tweakker APN. And I have been told if you file an FCC complaint they will let you run wide open once it gets filed with them. Usually take a month or two. They have so many lawsuits pending right now they can not deal with another.

..... And in my area, I assure you that my data usage is not effecting any of you. I live 30miles outside of Memphis TN. In the middle of nowhere. Really not sure I can take anything you say as serious. That said, if you get anywhere with you supposed FCC filing, you'd be the first. The issue has already been tested and AT&T is on firm ground.

They really don't care what you use the data for. Normally, all they care about is how much data you've used in a month. You are getting away with murder, my man. Good for you!
It's because they have threatened me in the past. I threatened back and they backed off. But it was before I deleted the tether file and used wifi tether app. They busted me for tethering now they can't. Can't tell what I'm using it for. It's like they try to throttle me at certain times. Randomly now that I have LTE coming thru at my home. I was wondering how many others have figured this out. I guess it is just that I threatened to put a lawsuit on them.

Can you give some more info on what you did? I'll give it a go and see if i can pull the wool over their eyes, too.
