Good morning. I've been lurking here for sometime but never posted before, but I'm hoping someone can help me with what appears to be a bricked captivate.
This morning I woke up to an unpleasant surprise. When I picked up my Captivate, running CM7 stable, I got a flood of messages about apps that were hanging. I ended up force quitting several of them and then decided to reboot the device. After rebooting my phone was stuck on the CM7 splash screen. I ran some updates from the Market last night, but can't think of any changes that those updates or I would have made to cause the system to become unstable.
I managed to use the three button method to get into recovery and tried clearing the cache and data and fixing permissions, but still was unable to boot the device (remained stuck on the CM7 splash screen.)
I then tried to do a recovery to a previous ROM that I had backed up (Cognition 4.x - I don't remember the exact versions but it was one of the last releases in the 4 series.) During the recover process the phone threw an error while trying to write the boot instructions. CM7 is a gingerbread ROM and Cognition 4.x was eclair, so I'm wonder if this effort to restore could be the reason that things have gotten worse.
Now I'm stuck on the ATT splash screen and am no longer able to get into recover via the 3 button method.
Not being able to get into recovery makes me fear that the phone may be bricked, but I'm hoping that someone on this forum may have an idea.
I appreciate any help that anyone has to offer.
Correction
One quick correction. The Cognition ROM I mentioned above is based on Froyo, not Eclair.
Thanks again for any help.
me too.... please help

shows how to put it in download mode. with the big triangle.
take the battery out, unplug it, put the battery in, hold down vol - and put in the USB. it takes a few tries, but i got it.
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Sa...te_Guide#Installing_the_ClockworkMod_Recovery
will put clockworkmod back on your phone.
choose your rom.
i'm going to try the cyanogenmod nightly again, but at least you get recovery mode back, your phone isn't bricked yet.
i finally managed to get into download mode last night. even though i wasn't able to use the three button method to get into recover, i was able to hold the volume button, plug in the usb and get the phone into download mode. then i used odin3 to go back to stock. from there i rooted, re-flashed cm7 and then gone from there.
hope that helps.

i've read almost every single post related on this subject, tried almost everything but no go.
recently, i installed SS-6 to my girlfriend's Vibrant but she didn't like it, so i attempted to revert to my nandroid from the original stock rom.. nandroid gave an MD5 error and did not installed.
at that point, i had already wiped data/cache, prior to nandroid.
i rebooted the phone, and now im stuck on the Vibrant splash.
i have tried to go to recovery mode via hard buttons but no go. i actually tested with another Vibrant and on that one, im able to get into recovery so it is not that i'm missing pressing a button or what not. been trying anxiously to see if im able to go either to download mode or get into cwm and flash cyanogenmod!
tried to use ODIN/ADB in order to boot into cwm to flash another rom, but it doesn't see the phone. ive already installed samsung drivers.
if i connect the charger, the battery indicator doesnt come up. it stays on that lined-circle screen forever, even after taking the USB cable out.
please help!
EDIT: added [Q] and added some more grammar errors.
any help is highly appreciated.
I had this same problem... The only thing that would fix it was this thing I had to buy called a Jig. It was less than $8 (with free shipping) on eBay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fix-Download-Mode-USB-Jig-Samsung-Captivate-Galaxy-S-/140520601309
It delivered in 2 days and my phone is working perfectly now
just ordered one!
thanks!
one more thing, are you able to just install a different ROM through ODIN or ADB without having to do the full wipe? im wanting to save the contents of the internal SD.
thanks again
I received a G Tablet which had been used for development work for a few months. The person giving it to me (not the dev who has left) said the tablet was working fine, but had just become frozen at a reboot after he had tried to erase personal data from the tablet. I asked him if he had erased the sd card and he said "maybe" but that he couldn't remember. I powered the tablet on and sure enough it displayed two lines on a black background, one of which said something like loading kernel.
Now, these tablets were all rooted, and had Android 2.3 on them, via one of the ROMs discussed here. I don't know which one however.
So, I tried using NVflash to flash the tablet back to a stock ROM. Tablet then got stuck in a boot loop; I would see the Viewsonic logo, then the G Tablet logo, and then this would go on forever.
So I shut it down and tried again. This time Nvflash failed almost at the last step after having written most of the image.
And so here I am now, with a totally dead tablet. I cannot power it on. No combination of power or volume up/down buttons work. The only sign of life is when I plug it into its charger, and see the charging light come on.
I confirmed again with the person who gave me the tablet that the device was working just fine before it froze at a reboot after his erasing attempts.
Is there a way out of this? I hope so. Please help!
Thanks very much

I would try popping it open and unplugging the internal battery then plugging it back in. Also hit the internal reset button while you're in there. It's pretty hard to actually kill one of these tablets. PM me if you need any other help.
help
Started my own thread, didnt mean to hijack. =)
Thanks, I will try removing the battery and let you know.
As for NVflash, I believe the latest version is here:
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/171...-using-either-11-or-12-based-images-g-tablet/
However in my case I have no idea whether I have 1.1 or 1.2 and there is no way to determine this. Which one should I choose?
Paul
Doesn't matter for NVFlash, just download all of the flash files again because it might be that you have a bad download. Also make sure you have the right drivers installed since the drivers that automatically install when you plug it in sometimes don't work.
I'm pretty sure that if it boots past the birds, the hardware is working okay, so you should run the FORMAT version for NVFlash and then I'd run just a CWM flash setup and see if you can get into CWM and delete the partitions from within that.
The best thing to flash as far as ROMs would be Bekit's 1105 which is stock OTB with a few key changes. If you can't get the 1105 to play nice, you might really have some hardware problems.
I would go with the 1.2 BL, it will give you access to the newer roms as it appears that dev for the 1.1 BL seems to be dwindeling. I upgraded mine to 1.2 the other day and it worked great.
I have a Samsung Fascinate and had Cyanogenmod 7.1.0 installed just fine. Last night I tried to install Cyanogenmod 7.2.0 and now my phone is stuck in a boot loop. The splash screens for Samsung and Cyanogenmod show up, then it goes to a CWM screen that prints a bunch of stuff but it disappears before I have a second to read it and it continually goes through this.
What I have tried:
Holding the different physical buttons. Most of these did nothing, however with the volume down button by itself a screen comes up saying downloading do not shut off target.... It does nothing and I have to remove the battery to get out of that.
Fix through Odin. This doesn't work because my phone just constantly tries to boot. I cannot get it to register on a PC because of this... I do however have a card reader if that helps; however this doesn't work with Odin.
Delete the original Cyanogenmod zip file for 7.2.0 and download a new copy, then transfer to my SD card. I though maybe if the original download was corrupt it would help to install a new copy, but this didn't help at all.
After searching the internet for hours now and trying everything I have seen I have decided to post this and see if anyone can help. I just need to get out of the bootloop I seem to be in :/
Well, your phone can't bootloop with the battery out, so I suggest you Odin back to stock using the instructions in Droidstyle's guide. From there, you can do any number of things.
Good luck.
I recently tried to install a new ROM on my phone.
I installed it using ROM Manager, which I realize now is probably what caused it mess up. I hadn't checked these forums in a while and didn't realize it was causing issues, so that was my stupidity but what's done is done.
Anyways, after installing the ROM, it just sat on the boot animation endlessly.
I attempted to get into Recovery mode, but when I tried using Volume Up+Down+Power, it always went to download mode, whether it was plugged in or not.
I tried flashing it back to stock image and kernel using this guide but even after that, it still got stuck on the boot animation.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
In desperate cases I found myself in, I have had great success with the the jig method without the jig (for lack of a better term). Look around on the Captivate forum there is a description there. It works like the normal procedure for getting the phone in download mode but then you also (at the same time) insert the battery. I think that simulates what the jig does.
It is awkward to coordinate all the different movements but it works on the Captivate, and I believe I have been successful on the I-777 as well with the same method.

Thanks, I actually did get it to go into recovery this morning. I let the battery drain over night and afterwards, it got into recovery. I'm still having some problems with a few other things but I think all the problems I have now are solvable, although if I get back into the same situation again, I'll be sure to take a look at that method.
try flashing stock pda with odin.
problem solved
Hi,
BeforeI begin I would like to state the I have searched the forum for solutions but the ones i findthe person can get into DL mode the only one that is just like my issue doesnt show how ODIN worked for him. but anywho...
I have a Glaxy SGH-I717 and it is stuck at the "FIRMWARE UPGRADE ENCOUNTERED AN ISSUE. PLEASE SELECT RECOVERY MODE IN KIES & TRY AGAIN."
How this started was I newly installed Kies and tried to back it up, but by mistake started to upgrade it. not wanting to mess up the phone I let it run without the phone being in download mode. after a bit the upgrade failed and my phone was stuck at the error message screen above. to reboot the phone i have to remove the battery. pressing the button on turns it off but back on at the error screen. my computer makes the sound like it recognizes the phone but doenst show it in my computer. Kies just says connecting for awhile then stops.
Things I cant do with the phone
- get into download mode - when trying it goes the the press up or down button (ethier one goes to error screen)
- get into recovery mode - the samsung logo flashes for a second then goes to the error screen
things i have tried
- Using oding to flash ROM(tried two different files both from da_g for flashes)
each time odin states it failes at the write stage
- Kies emergency recovery (it freezes at 0% somtimes it says the phone is disconnected)
- Used one click fix program (made me click more then once)
I'am curently looking into trying the adb solution usind android sdk. just making the post here to see if anyone knew a easier solution to this.
Fixed
Problem is fixed, switched USB ports and found a different ROM to flash in ODIN. I now see why people love ODIN better then Kies

what ROM did you use? where can I find it? I have the same problem you had, except I was only trying to hard reset the sgh-i717 but the only option I could seem to get to was "A custom OS can cause critical problems in phone and installed applications. If you want to download a custom OS, press the volume up key......" etc This is my friends phone I was just trying to hard reset it because she forgot her pattern lock, so I downloaded a ROM and odin and when I attempted to flash it, it got to that error screen you had. It lets me get back to the previous screen but always goes back to firmware upgrade issue screen no matter if i choose up or down. :crying: I have flashed a couple phones before by following tutorials on the web. I though it was only giving me that option because the phone might have already been rooted, it never let me go to the wipe data menu. The instructions all said to hold volume up + home + power, it never did anything for me. I was only able to get to the custom OS screen by holding volume down and power button. you were able to get back to the ready to flash screen? Tried taking out the battery and turning off with power button always goes back to Firmware upgrade encountered. Please help if you can, if I am breaking some forum rules sorry! just need help! Am running windows xp, since the phone was loccked have no idea what it was running, just that its an att samsung galaxy note sgh-i717. it saysin odin mode, custom binary download: no, current binary : samsung official.
thank you!

I have read several forums searching for answers, no one ever stated that odin will still work while on the screen that said "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue..." pretty positive it flashed the lock screen background and the user settings that were on the lock screen are no longer there it had said something to the effect of " ____ password protected!" ill leave the blank up to your imagination. The user settings are gone but not the pattern lock! all I want to do is hard reset to eliminate the lock pattern lock???
Thanks

Sorry to rez such an old post but i broke screen on my current phone and needing another phone asap I ventured into the big bin labeled Misc Phone Parts and all i could find (screen came on)was my old Note. Popped in in Sim using an adapter.
And thought i was good until I saw Phone icon dots Yellow triangle dots PC monitor. Firmware Upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again.
After about 6 hours I do not have it working. I am not new to samsung flashing having flashed my first phone 4 years ago and since then installed 30 plus custom ROMS on all my Galaxy phones through out the years. Sure I can just find used much better phone but then this will not be resolved and will keep me up at night. (if your like this you know what I am talking about).
