Rooted Phone = no video rentals - Motorola Photon 4G

I found that if the phone is rooted, the video app from the Android Market that allows you to watch the videos you rented from there won't allow you to watch movies with it if the phone is rooted. (It'll give you a message about that)
I'm not worried, I have Netflix.

there is a way to bypass it actually, just have to rename su.. coulda swore someone made an automated way of bypassing the video limits tho...

All phones that are rooted are axed from the rental program. Its a way of avoiding piracy.

You can still rent and watch on your computer using the same gmail account, just not from the phone unless you do the bypass mentioned above.

market version works great for me, but I have hulu plus
wish HDMI-out worked though
installed and went to watch from free gallery and just buffered forever and said network error.
more specific it said it appears u have network issues try again later.

you on wifi?
when I'm on 3G mine will sometimes get stuck like that, especially if I try to fiddle with the video quality. After I've touched that setting even if its set at low it gives me grief.
What does Hulu do? Thanks!

JS, I have to admit I made this post prematurely. I didn't realize this hulu.apk did NOT include the hex fix which allows full free viewing via the web browser.
For some reason, I was under the impression that this application provided that fix as well as providing the Hulu client.

Huli is an online TV show/movie streaming website. They have a lot of shows and movies. But they are going down hill. Too much stuff on their site is going to hulu plus. Regular Hulu is free but has ever growing commercials, hulu plus you pay for. Its basically YouTube for TV and movies but with more commercials and you pay for a lot of stuff :/
It was a great service in the beginning, but they were loosing money and needed some way to stay afloat

This was there plan all along. You build the fanbase then slowly make features a premium service. Some shows have only 3 free episodes. They may only post just that weeks show in the future.

I thought it was that they kept paying the companies to stream their shows. I used megavideo after they put 8 or 10 commercials in each show and started doing hulu plus. But now I can't use megavideo either :/

Xfinity Player for Comcast

Those that have Comcast might want to check out this app. Comcast actually released a decent app.

Lol I hope, with what my parents pay we could use some sweet stuff.
The app does not work on my phone. It gets stuck at "Verifying application integrity". I'm running RezRom S4.
I'm just wondering why the app requests root permissions. Good app though.

I suspect that asking for root is a security check. Content providers are very twitchy about this on demand from anywhere stuff. I denied it. No reason for it to have root except to see if it's there.
Do u know if this is supposed to replace the old xfinity app? Cuz that one was laggy as fux.. and it only changes my channels when it wants too

I denied it too. Hadn't thought they might just be checking to see who is rooted. Interesting...

Is there a way you can stop the app from checking what subscriptions you're paying for. I just have internet and directv streaming is a bit behind xfinity.

So you don't want to pay for cable but you want to get the content for free?
No.
The DirecTV app is still on beta mode and its who I have my "cable" subscriptions with. I was able to watch a show yesterday on xfinity and the hd quality is excellent compare to the DirecTV app at this time. Just wondering if it was possible

There's a reason why you have to sign up for satellite on contract, and it isn't because of how awesome it is. Comcast has contracts now, but they are optional and mainly a way to lock in rates and get something free.
everyone i've ever known who signed a contract with a sat company has regretted it. they make you pay for everything, too.
Missing the download link to xfinity player

When will the photon get a official hulu plus app?

Even the og evo has one
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
It's doubtful but you never know...
There is an app in the Play store called "flash video browser" by daniel lockard. It let's you watch regular hulu without a subscription. It's really pretty well designed. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...mNvbS5kYW5pZWxobG9ja2FyZC5mbGFzaGJyb3dzZXIiXQ..

Rooting question

Will rooting break my ability to rent or play movies from the Google Play store. Also, will it break Google Wallet?
Thanks for any info you can provide.

The reason I ask is that when I rooted my Epic 4g the Play store would not let me rent movies because it detected my phone was rooted.
If that is not the case anymore, awesome.
Actually if your rooted, you can't use HTC watch from the last time I tried, rooting will give you complete access to the system, but that doesn't mean that your HTC/google services can't tell without a modified version that doesn't look for root.
also you can't use google play videos, however I have found a missed google video app somewhere on this forum before that is hacked to work with rooted devices. But I'm pretty sure HTC watch is done with when your rooted. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I would like to know also
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Know HTC watch is done with since no one really cares to mod it. Use up your free rentals if u have em before u root. What I did anyways.
And y even bother paying google for their overpriced movies? Half the time it stops playing right in the middle or doesn't work at all. Then takes 3 months to get a refund after complaining everyday for that 3 month period.
Netflix or torrents are so much better, and cheaper.
Never used HTC watch so I don't care about that. What about Google wallet, will it still work?

Redbox instant is a joke.
I signed up for an account on 3/20 and went to rent a movie with one of my remaining 3 credits but it was declined. When I called they said it was because they tried billing me for the next month but I didn't have money in my account. They were billing me a week early and refused to let me use my credits I already paid for until they got their money for the next month.
I'll never use redbox again.
Eh it worked when I first signed up but I went to go try tonight and I got this so I cancelled....funny thing is it wouldn't let me cancel either haha so I cancelled via browser hahaha. And the whole time I've had it I've used maybe 5 credits was pissd when I couldn't use credits to rent blurays...as of tonight I'm back with Netflix

Also how does rooting cause a security issue to you or then? I have never heard of such a stupid thing. I guess I could see it causing security issues with yourself if your stupid and grant unknown apps permission but that's it, and most people are smart enough not to allow everything they see. But how would that cause a security issue with them?
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
Good for Enterprise app, which is supposed to offer a secure access to corporate email has the same policy--it doesn't work on rooted devices.
I also always wondered how being rooted affected security. If you are a well written app, should not you be secure in all circumstances and not rely on the standard system protection of your data? After all, secure apps work on Windows which is most of the time rooted by default.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using Tapatalk 2
With redbox instant its not about security of financial information its about being able to extract and save content in my opinion.
With corporate email its generally a security policy.
Adam Outler (I think may be someone else though) actually did a write up and gave some presentations on reasons why rooted phones such as those the official CM dev teams support are actually more secure than their non rooted counterpart, same device without root.
In a nutshell, a basic idea is that developers find an exploit, like say an open door. They then put a secure tunnel in its place and close the door behind them, so said exploit is always open on a non rooted phone but on a rooted phone, they not only closed the door after walking through but also replaced the standard door with a bank vault door. That analogy is mine, and I'm just giving a real basic dumbed down summary of the theory.
