[Q] Unlock Bootloader already rooted?? - Motorola Photon 4G

Good evening all! Sorry if this has been covered... I have an already rooted locked Photon. What's the best method for taking it all the way to the unlocked zone? Thx in advance!

Follow the steps in THIS link, if thats a bit confusing you can use THIS youtube video by QBKing77, who is absolutely amazing with his videos and gives you a complete walkthrough. Good luck with unlocking! Seems a bit difficult if your new to the game, but with QBKing77's videos its really simple.
EDIT: Don't forget that you WILL lose 4g by unlocking bootloader

+ 1
I used the QBKing videos to do my unlock and re-root and it was extraordinarily easy.
The main thing is the loss of 4G - we don't have it locally so I wasn't all hat bothered.
There is a thread or 2 out there on how to restore 4G after the unlock as well.

[Q] Root?

Hello,
I'm coming from the Evo. Got my TB today after looking at this forum and seeing all the ROMs but I realize now that I should have paid more attention to the root part of the situation.
I used unrevoked to root the Evo. I have never used ADB or ABD whichever it is and have no clue how to. I have searched the pages of this forum and can not find an answer to is there a 1-click root for the thunderbolt?
MY TB INFO:
2.2.1
1.13.605.7
I read through the manual root but do not think I have the skills to pull that off. So is there a 1-click root and I'm just being a noob and missing it? And if not I know there is one for the droid x and do you think I should take back the TB and get a droid x instead.
All responses are appreciated! (even if they are smartass which I'm sure some will be lol)
it isn't that bad, honestly. I had no background with ADB (I think its ADB, and not ABD), and I went through the command prompts pretty effortlessly. I got scared when I accidently copied two lines and pasted them into the command prompt, but just re did each line separately and it was okay. Unsure if the root method has changed since I did it but my advice is to heavily research it, and not panic if you do start doing it. I was stressed out about it throughout the entire process, when in reality there wasn't much to be worried about. Good luck kind sir.
There are also YouTube videos of the rooting process for the TB that you can watch to get an idea of what you are in for which isn't that bad but so worth it!
I 2nd the youtube vids, worked flawless. Adb for dummies set up, vids, best walkthrough by far... Thanks Natemil

I used this one too.
I will give it a shot
The 3-click method is just the manual one with some batch files that do most of the work for you, basically. It's not like an app on your phone. I prefer to do it manually over the one-click apps. It's really not that hard and you can pretty much be guaranteed it's going to work right. Do a little reading and go do it. It's really simple.
Well the majority seems to lean towards the manual root. I guess I will study up on the youtube videos and attempt. I just don't want to brick my phone. The fear sets in....
Just get ready to pause. Youtube video is pretty damn easy!

i used the so called "3 click root method" they were talking about and it didn't work for me 2 times so i did it manually. there is also a youtube video that shows how to set up your computer with adb as well since you said you've never used it

haven't heard of one person actually bricking their phone yet (i'm coming from a droid x that i bricked twice so i was ultra cautious)
the root looks scary but all you got to do is follow instructions...i knew nothing about ADB going into this and now i don't hesitate to flash anything.
good luck man...plenty of people here to help
p.s. i used the "permaroot" method by jcase (check sticky's) and i would not recommend anything else...he is very well trusted around here and i have had zero issues with losing root or flashing rom's, ruu's and kernels...and i flash new ones daily! droid x was a nightmare!!!! you are in good hands lol
Thank you all for your replies! Funny how one community is nicer than another.
All very helpful! I guess I'm just used to the evo forums where it wasn't acceptable to be a noob lol.
I am going to get a good night sleep and attack the manual root tomorrow.
Thanks again!!!!
SUCCESS!! WE HAVE ROOT!!
Took about an hour but if you go through the instructions slowly everything works out just fine. The longest part was getting adb setup correctly for me.
Thanks again for all the help!
ive been rooting all my phones since the droid 1. i have a pretty good understanding of adb and ive still always used the easy root methods. i used the 3 step method and if you follow all the instructions it works perfectly. as long as you dont do exactly what it tells you not to theres no worry about bricking your phone which, with all the devs out there, theres really no need to worry about anymore. you can usually get it up and working again no matter how bad you screw it up.

can someone spare some time for a noob? (ELECTRIFY)

HI, I rooted my phone...or sort of....because mine had been upgraded to the 2.3.5 which I've been reading doesn't have something to unlock the bootloader.....sooooo anyway, at this point I don't know what to do next. I've been reading about clockworkmod....i downloaded it and it didn't have an option for electrify so I chose atrix (no option for photon either) bc i read somewhere that they were similar....anywho...I'd like to install cool roms that have capabilities for faster booting time, faster processor (maybe because mines not all that bad)..and just cool and nice...but being as that I don't have the FULL root (as I've read) I am worried about screwing it up....
not only that but there seem to be so many steps that I don't want to forget something.
I've also already backedup my apps with titanium as well as ultimate backup....just in case.
whatelse do I need to do and will I be able to get a ROM without having the full root?? (root checker says its rooted, but titanium gave me some kidn of message before backing up about not having entire priviledge or something like that.
I don't mean to repeat stuff but I've searched and searched for hours on end for electrify stuff and it seems like everyone just has the photon....please help and give me step by step "for-dummies" instuctions....
I am finishing my bachelors in IS so I do know some limited programming but no where near what y'all know....
thanks
(oh and please decypher any accronyms u might use because the only ones i am familiar with is ROM, and CWM)
THANKS
Someone gave this link to me, this guy made videos for EVERYTHING that even an idiot like me could follow!!! Just watch the entire video, then when done, replay but pause at each step. Easy!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1250697
i hope its for the electrify...thanks so much!!!
Everything I have seen thus far applies to both and is posted if for some reason it's not. But I have yet to see anything unless its Beta.
Wrong sir, if you are on 2.3.5 for the Electrify, you cannot unlock the bootloader at this time. There were some people working on it, but I haven't heard too much info as of lately.
Well now I have a separate question
is it possible to code your phone once it is on rooted to do what you wanted to do like speed up boottime or code junkies so you can take screenshots? But without having to download an application, just access the root of your phones and code it, is that possible?
Oh, do I only wish.... Maybe I should start a thread...
so..... screenshot app after rooting even with 2.3.5 locked bootloader works. after rooting, instalking busybox, superuser, all those goodies. just downloaded screenshotER and opened the app and set it all up.... takes screenshots now

[Q] Unrooting/S-ON an Evo 3D that was rooted with revolution tool?

I have an Evo 3D on Sprint with a **** touchscreen (won't accept half my inputs, or presses somewhere else on the screen, or just spazzes out and presses random stuff). I let it go for a long time because I didn't want to deal with the hassle of unrooting and getting some warranty action. Now, unfortunately, just using the thing makes me want to eat the phone. Seriously. Just chew up all its horrible little circuits and subject them to the terrors of my colon.
I found a youtube video that offers a method, but the link it provided for the pc86img downloaded at a max of 10k/s, which for a 400mg download pretty much guarantees that the download will be interrupted before completion. Plus, it didn't seem like the guy in the video had the competence/confidence I'm used to seeing here on XDA. Figured you all might know a better way. Searching only turned up a few threads for phones unlocked via HTC's method. Thoughts?
Welp, I never got a response on here, but in case anyone else has the same question, I found a guide that's much better than the crappy Youtube one I found before, and actually has a working download link for the RUU. Here it is:
http://www.goodandevo.net/2011/07/h...-evo-3d-back-to-an-unrooted-s-on-state-1.html
Look up qbking77's videos... His are spot on.... I had the exact same issues you're having and I unrooted with his method and got a refurbished 3d w 1.5 but honestly, its been NDB... Between flash GUI and how easily you can flash w fastboot to recovery, you will find that it is worth it if it means your screen will work properly...

Suggestions for a new owner

Hi I have been a samsung freak.
Been using Odin and tars and stuff since ages , so much so that I can flash root update my phone with ease 100 times a day.
My photon will be shipped tomorrow . It will be used for GSM purposes when I all be outta country or my dad will use it when he will be going to Asia
May be later it all be used on the cdma network
Are there any suggestions for me on how can I go about this new phone. ( rooting .. updating.. unlocking and all )
What should I know and what should I do upon receiving it .
Buttery Smooth THS15 Deviled
First read the important threads in dev section. Everything is written there.
Compendium, tegra flashing, unlocking, torpedo rooting and other. You must read it, if you want to use some custom things. Do not skip this step. You don't have to understand everything for the first time, but read it, you will understand it later.
Thanks mate.
The update says it all be at my doorstep in 3 more he's.
Ans then I will be heading to the section.

Welcome to a superior phone and manufacturer. No, really, as far as build quality and radio, Sammy doesn't hold a candle to moto.
But yes, as Peetr said, read everything. Sammy users for some reason tend to have a hard time adjusting to our way of doing things. A couple things to watch out for...
1) there is a possibility that your phone will come with 2.3.5 installed. If this is the case, DO NOT try to unlock or install any custom anything. The only thing you can really do is root.
2) if you are on 2.3.4, DO NOT take the ota update when it prompts you. This will prevent you from installing ROMs and such.
3) open the door
4) get on the floor
5) everybody walk the dinosaur

Loving 3,4, & 5.
I just received a brand new one, shipped with 2.3.4 and I haven't been bothered about an update yet (4 days later) - still not guaranteeing his will be 2.3.4.... But according to sprint, that's what they ate currently shipping with.

mine is shipped
and its still on .4 , it came thru a third party and not sprint ,
already rooted , donno which method though ,
bootloader still locked.
trying to find how to unlock it , hope its not dependent upon the method of rooting .
Biggest disappointment, 8MP crappy camera , just didnt expect it to be so horrible in low light ,
just trying out mant camera apps which can brighten and make the low light snaps a bit sharper

Acvice : thanks for the help !!
but the bootloader unlocking pudding thread has been updated, the video shows older files and all.
still am confused coz with the looks of it , it all seemed as if the phone should be stock when unlocking bootloader with stock recovery and after the unlocking , rooting should be undertaken
I am 0 when adb comes , no knowledge whatsoever abount adb
any help would be highly appreciated,

Totally second the "read everything". I'm a Linux/CLI/ADB noob, but I read everything I can. It doesn't always make sense, but it's good to have it floating around up there.
Also, not sure if anyone told you, but if you can unlock the bootloader, you lose everything. As in, when you turn it back on, you will have to re-activate it, and all your apps and data will be gone. Activation was painless and automated with US Cellular (even the second time). Also, if you use Titanium Backup to backup Gingerbread stuff, do not restore it under CM9/ICS. You will boot loop. Download the apps from Google Play, and then use Ti to restore their data. And restore no system data. Hold onto your Gingerbread Ti backups, but stick 'em on a hard drive somewhere, but keep 'em off your SD card once you go ICS. They'll just get in the way.
You said you couldn't find the derpunlock.sbf? Derpunlock is included in the Electrify unlock file. An Electrify's just a 3G Photon, so don't take my word for it, but I bet the file's the same. You can find the Electrify.zip in the downloads section at Team US Cellular (another phone community/dev site). Not sure if you have to be a member to download. If so, PM me and I'll get you the file somehow.

Hi Mike, Welcome to the thread.
As a new rooter to the 3d and a long time rooter of the EVO (original) I have to say I'm finding that this is much more intimidating than it really is.
Check out this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1813818
It was a very well thought out thread and worked smoothly. The hardest part was the wire trick and I'll be honest the most intimidating. It took me 5x before I got the timing correct with how quickly I touched the ground. Outside of that it was simple.
It's true the EVO 3d is somewhat of a pickle when it comes to gaining s-off. Just a bunch of tedious steps. But its all worth it once you gain it. At least you won't have to deal with the headache of unlocked s-on.

I am unlocked S-on and use EXT4 Touch recovery with "smart flash" It seems to work just as if you are s-off...
I mainly deal with Samsung phones as I own an S2, I was looking into rooting my fiancee's Evo 3D to run an app to unlock contact photos for handcent, but it does seem pretty tedious to root them from the searching I've done here, unlike Odin in the Samsung world. Is there a particularly painless way to root the 3D but preserve data? Cause I doubt she'll want me to wipe it just for that, heh.

Unfortunately there isn't, since you have to either HTC unlock the bootloader, which resets the phone, or flash an RUU (stock ROM) to go straight to S-OFF. Since you are not starting with root, you might want to try MyBackup from the Play Store which doesn't require root for the basic backup to save as much as you can, then root (and optionally S-OFF) and restore from the backup on the SD card.
I've recently opened a thread in the General Forum to make it easier for Sprint users to get root, and optionally S-OFF, but there's no such thing as a one click root for the Evo 3D. I tried one that was posted in the General Forum a couple of weeks ago but it didn't work on our device.
