Has anyone managed to turn on NFC? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

its kinda bugging me that ATT restricts it, anyone found a loophole?

Enabled in Entropy512's latest daily driver kernel, but not for Google wallet. Read up on it in his thread in development.

Yeah man, With an upgraded kernel it works... but I haven't found a single use for it yet

I guess having nfc is nice but when you can't have Google wallet what is it good for? Aside from android beam which we don't have yet

If you download the Google Wallet zip someone packaged on this forum (can't find link, wonder where it went) and manually install the files from that archive that aren't already on our device, you'll find that Google Tags works, at least it did when I installed it on UnNamed 1.31. Google Wallet itself gets stuck on "Activating device"

It's not the kernel - it's actually a permissions XML and smali hacks in Settings.apk (for I777 base ROMs - Hellraised I9100 ROMs don't need the smali hacks, Samsung put in **** that explicitly removes NFC from the Settings menu if an I777 is detected!)
Without GW, you can still read NFC tags - which are not very common so far. Chicken-and-egg problem. Few phones support it because there isn't much point with so few tags around - few tags exist because so few phones support it.

While most custom roms support NFC now; google wallet has yet to work on our phones.

No way, considering the I9100 (except for the I9100P) does not even have NFC hardware.
GWallet has been ported to the Nexus S (non-Sprint) and I think to the GNex.
I've gotten everything to not FC, but Google Wallet will not load past initializing. Not quite sure why at this point though.
this sux... i was just wondering the same thing since one of my buddies was just telling me about this.. but thanx alot guys
I can install the .apk but when I run it I get an error message
"Not Supported--Unfortunately, Google Wallet has not yet been certified in your country or on your device/carrier."

Actually there isn't an ICS version. It's telling him to be on 2.3.7, the first Android version to support Google Wallet.
I flashed a 4.0.3 rom and google wallet works perfectly. Only problem is that the rom is unstable and it's for i9100 so the capacitive buttons don't work correctly. On my current rom (ics'd out v9) it won't go past the "Initializing" screen.

I'm willing to bet not at first. I believe Verizon will keep it off so that it can substitute its own program that does the same thing. Then after a bit the devs will get it working for everyone to use.
I'm pretty bummed the device's for VZ are still shipping without Wallet...The previous "excuse" from VZ was that
...because Google Wallet did "not simply access the operating system and basic hardware of our phones like thousands of other applications," the service "needs to be integrated into a new, secure and proprietary hardware element in our phones"....

btw has anyone tried the method mentioned here to get it on their device? Have to use the default android browser to do it evidently, so no Dolphin, or Chrome even...
http://www.androidauthority.com/google-wallet-for-verizon-galaxy-nexus-50922/
...How to Install Google Wallet on Your Verizon Galaxy Nexus Manually:
1. Open browser on your phone and open http://market.android.com
2. Look for Google Wallet
3. If the browser prompts you to open the Market, don’t. You should stay in the browser.
4. Once results come back, tap on the icon for Google Wallet.
5. Tap the Install button before signing into your Google account.
Remember, you are doing this from the browser and not from the Market app.
6. When you have already signed in, you will be redirected to the Market page in the browser.
7. Don’t be surprised to discover that you don’t have an option to install the app since it doesn’t support Verizon.
8. Tap the back button so you are prompted for the Browser or Market again. This time, choose the Market.
This will let you open the Google Wallet page through the Android Market. You will get the option to install already.

The method doesn't work, but there appears to be an .apk somewhere that can be installed.
I installed it successfully on my DINC4GLTE. It just does not have the permissions to allow use yet.

I tried the Nexus method (or very similar) on the nexus I had for a week before the Inc4 was released and it worked. Haven't tried it on my Inc4 but it's on my list... I'm kind of waiting for JB ROM or CM10 before I start messing around too much. It was sure nice (JB) for the two days I ran it on the Nexus!

Thank the OP in the above link if it works for you!

I can see multiple similar threads on half-baked Google now from JB which is still quite buggy... atleast one in all smartphone's theme section ...
You should mention whats working and whats not before directing someone to this link ... is not very usable as of now.

Exactly, I've had this for a day or so, and voice search isn't working. But they're aware of that issue, and attempting to fix it. OP should mention that voice doesn't work.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app
Voice-to-text will not work without kernel support or a hack forcing the app to use the existing Google Speech-to-text implementation. Either direction will take an obscene amount of time, i'd imagine. Don't wait up...
Why is this sinking down the app list?! People need to see this!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
After using for several days, one issue I've noticed (besides voice search not working), is that the "cards" do not automagically "appear" on my phone. Rather, to view any card, I have to manually open the app. Once there I see a relevant card, such as the weather, or the length of my commute to work when the phone figures it's time for me to go to work. But my understanding is that Google Now, working properly, is supposed to make these cards "pop up" on your phone, rather than you having to manually open the app.

Yes. Search for mikeyxda07. I believe that's the file. One of the xda devs (mike) has one up and running. Also, I think Shostock has it in his ROM. Why not just switch to JB and install it with one of the various Aroma gapps installers? Works well.

[Q] Android master key vulnerability patch

Anybody try this on the Rezound yet?
http://www.rekey.io/#intro
Link to app in Play Store --> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.rekey.rekey
Some of the reviews talk about boot loops, but there aren't any reviews from Rezounds.
Update: I ran a backup and then installed it. Seems to have worked fine, but the Bluebox Security Scanner still says my phone is unpatched. Hmmm.
I wouldn't use it. I think 4.3 will have the patch and CyanogenMod has already patched it and put it in there rom

google has patched this on their server side and has sent a patch out manufactures, who should be pushing it out to carriers.
AFAIK the patch alone on google servers were more than enough needed to stop this from ever coming to light.
but as a caution, when installing an app outside the market (ie play, amazon) make sure it's a trusted source. If you're still at ease just dont sideload apps. apps coming from the market will be scanned and made sure they dont exploit this.
hope this helps put your mind at ease a little.

this is the most secure way to patch it on the phone side.
if you are running cm10.1 it has already been patched
if you are running AOKP or PAC that was built after 7/8 (i think) it has already been patched.

the only way to delete it is uninstalling the app. turning off any connection to the internet works too i think.
can I delete it via file manager?? ...
I've taken the battery out several times and can see where that's not going to work much. So I'll turn off my internet right after I post this.
FYI: the ad seems like it's on a timer. Plus it keeps telling me different things such as "your phone is at risk", "free app of the day", "Samsung galaxy phone", and the URL is usually for candy crush saga, which not only doesn't work on this phone, the URL redirects me to Google Play Store.
Thank you for helping me out!!

new kernel means fewer problems likely ...
I'm not getting anything more than the network notice.
Airpush doesn't mention an app or anything else so I'm really not sure what to try next. On most Linux systems, when you disable or worse, delete the network manager - your out of business. The thing stops working. I'm 200 miles from the nearest metropcs store, so that's why I asked.
The bulk of Linux distributions don't have issues such as this, so that's why I'd rather put the new Linux kernel in. Plus, I'm very familiar with synaptic and a host of things that android simply doesn't have.
I've actually found a premium Linux installer which installs Debian and Ubuntu on your cell phone right from sourceforge.net.
Also, I did some research and metropcs offers phones up to android 4.0. No word if they're still going to run in 2015 when metropcs switches over from cdma to T-Mobile's gma network.
I'm sorry for the late reply. I was nearly killed in a motorcycle wreck in January (6 months ago) and I've been sick in bed for a while. I was in a coma for 4 1/2 months. My new bike was destroyed. Several broken bones. - So I apologize.
The URL showing up in the address bar is http://adtracking.king.com/modules/ad tracking /?com.=candy.crush.saga. Is there a way to hunt this /modules directory down in Root Explorer???
You could try adding the address to the hosts file in /etc/hosts

The problem sounds oh so much like a malicious app, did you install something just prior to this starting? Maybe pull a logcat and try to see if you can't track down what's doing this.

Shannon -2,
I looked up, and found tytung's posts regarding the ROM's and even found the posts for the new 4.2 ROM's then bookmarked the posts too.
Since a few mods got mad and deleted the download links, is therê a place that will allow users to download the ROM's we need?
Also, will these ROM's work on non -HTC cellphones?? (Such as my huawei M835).
I honestly don't know how to determine if my phones have the type of / version of software listed to run the ROM's tytung's listed in his posts. - I read most of his posts in on huge thread, including the new screen he created with other Developers. I just don't have the knowledge yet to decipher if this is appropriate for my two phones or not.
Since your an experienced developer, will the XDA premium app run on android 4.0 or higher and let us post??
Lastly, is there a Developer that I can Pay to updated my ROM?
Thank you Shannon!!
AFAIK all versions are supported by xda app.
If you search on google you will find links to tytungs roms, the mods don't want links posted here!!
Search for 'NexusHD2 Android forum' and you will find guides for installation on all of these roms.
No, these roms are specific to the HD2 hardware so won't work on your huawei M835.
If you want a fluid rom go for the gingerbread version, the 4.x roms have some lag!
If you have any problems post back here.
Good luck with it.
