ATTN AT&T Floridians - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hey guys, I just moved to south Florida (east coast) from NYC, and I seem to be getting HORRIBLE data speeds. I just wanted to know if anyone can suggest a good modem for me to use?? I cuurently have the UCKH7 I believe. Any help/guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Uckk6 works for me. I'm in Jacksonville.

have u guys ever tried any other modems in comparison to UCKK6? or was it good enough that you didnt have to?

I personally haven't felt the need to try another one but if i find some time i may experiment.

im in tampa and have had both UCKH7 and UCKK6 and haven't had any signal issues with both. I would ask other ppl in your immediate area how the att signal is. Also you could call up att to see if they are having issues with the towers in your area. Worst case scenario, I would just return it to stock and do a warranty exchange

Welcome to Florida...you poor bastard
I'm in Fort Lauderdale and the data speeds here are terrible. I rarely got more than 1.2mbps. Lately it's been getting worse, not better....around 800-1000mbps. I actually called AT&T to see if I was being throttled because I do download alot (at least 500mb/mo.) and listen to streaming music everyday. I was told that one of the towers in Hollywood was "degraded" and they were working on it...which was a lie because the speed is just as bad in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Fort Lauderdale uses different towers than Hollywood. I work in Hollywood and have always had slow data there. I can always tell when I'm switching towers because my streaming music cuts out when I enter Hollywood. AT&T truly sucks here. By the way...using UCKL2 modem.

I'm in hollywood as well and I work in/go to school in miami and data speeds here generally suck. It's when I'm at school or work that my phone really gets to shine so I feel your pain. I wish AT&T would get their act together.

Looks like there is a total of 5 modems that will work for our phone so far. Perhaps the other 3 could yield better results for you in Florida? Might be worth checking out, cant hurt anything.

I live in S Florida as well, reds idea prob best bet, however at work in Boca raton I use kh7 as its always gotten the best speeds and signal, at home I go back and forth between kk6 and kh7, interestingly enough I just got off the phone with att complaining to them of the data speeds and dropped calls all along the saw grass expy. What's even funnier is they directed me to that map of the ridiculous upgrades they supposedly completed all over sfla in 2011. Sure enough I was absolutely certain where I live they had not finished enhanced back haul for the hspa+ but they just told me I'm less than 1 mile from that and equal distance from a brand new tower as of last month. So I said that's interesting cause before work I was getting upwards of 40k/s dl which is basically dialup. So they are sending a tech out there this weekend to see what sup with the tower and fiber install by Monday. So ill report back and hopefully I can recommend a solid modem for the area as on my way home I was just downloading at 6 mbps using kh7 which is what we should be getting

Same here in Port St. Lucie. I can see the cell tower from my back window, though.

I haven't traveled much around the state since I switched from Sprint to AT&T in September, but my speeds in Tallahassee aren't that great. At least not as good as when I'm visiting family around the Atlanta area.
AT&T hasn't rolled out HSPA+ iin our area, so I'm getting around 2.5-3.5Mbps in good areas and around 1.2Mbps in poor areas. Just ran Speed Test and got 2.61Mbps here at the house, which is pretty decent. When in Georgia I can +4Mbps.
Even on the low end, it's much better than 0.3Mbps or lower with Sprint.
I should add I'm on UCKH7

Signal strength, returned phones and the new Massachusetts phone tax law

I'm risking starting up another signal strength thread, but I figured this info was useful for anyone looking to return their Evo 3D or any other phone in Massachusetts.
I finally decided I had better try swapping out my Evo 3D at Best Buy in case there was something wrong with the radio. Reception in Eastern Massachusetts has been horrible with it. Far worse than my Moment or my wife's Epic.
When I tried to swap the phone out, they told me I owed $22 in taxes. Turns out that July 1st, Massachusetts taxes you on the full $699 and not the price you pay. So if you bought on the 24th and replace in store after July 1st, there is nothing Best Buy can do to avoid the tax.
I decided to switch back to the original phone because after loading a signal dbm widget onto both phones and the reps' personal evo 3d, they all had similarly crappy signals.
A few questions though:
1) It doesn't seem like signal is always bad. Just much more prone to dropping out. Anyone else experienced this?
2) Is it possible that the case is killing the signal? I have the platinum series case from best buy which looks slick but if it's killing the signal I'll get rid of it.
3) I noticed that bluetooth seems to have a significant negative effect on the dbm of the phone signal. Is this normal for a phone, bad design, bad luck or chance?
4) I struggle to get 4G to stay connected in Boston. It loses the connection then goes into 4G! mode and refuses to connect for more than a few seconds. Is this normal?
5) To what extent can HTC improve signal performance by software updates? Samsung was able to do this for the Moment, but they were starting with a lemon of a phone to begin with...
Anyway, bad signal or not, if you are messing around with phones in Massachusetts, be sure to sneak over the border to New Hampshire before returning it or you'll piss away $20+.
I'm having signal issues too gets really annoying esp with 4g hope its just a bug that can be fixed
I am in the worcester area and my signal is terrible everywhere I go. With my 4g it was fine, 3d absolutely sucks. I am on my second phone now and both have been horrible. I have been in the city where I used to have great signal but get nothing now. I also had no signal on the mass pike in auburn and was roaming.

I noticed today, after changing the roaming mode from automatic to sprint only, that I was dropping in and out of service every few minutes. This had never happened previously as I always have a consistent signal in this area both with the Evo3D as well as the Evo4G. I am hoping a radio update will fix this...
I'll try it this week when I am in New York City and see if it improves. Maybe it just isn't using all the towers in this area or something.
I had the same exact problem with mine but then i loaded a custom prl (00001) and now it's rock solid signal and i haven't roamed yet. Highly recommend by me.

Of course MA lawmakers passed the revised taxes bill. They had to find a way to hike their pay and they figured some weird tax would fill the void.

My ''xDU4L C0R3 SH00T3Rx'' shot you down in 3D!
I live Cape Cod, and drive all over MA and RI, and my signal and 3G is horrible. I exchanged mine for a new one and no change in service. My old Evo 4G got 120 to 140 kbs and this one gets 22 to 70, occasionally 94... Something is wrong with the phone, not the service... I may just buy another Evo 4G from eBay since I gave mine to my nephew, and keep this phone until they find a fix...

Framingham
I'm in Framingham right now, getting 2 bars on the 4g meter. Speedtest shows 7617 down and 1435 up.
3G sucks for me too. It's not quite 'deal breaker' material, but combined with some other pet peeves of mine I'm leaning towards bringing it back and waiting for the SGS2....cuz if I'm going to have a **** radio I might as well have an unlocked bootloader and CM8 guaranteed.
Well here in Wisconsin I've been getting pretty consistent signals and 3g. But about 2 hours ago everything failed. Haven't had 3g since and I either have 0 bars or I'm roaming, usually with still only a bar or two. Can somebody think of a cause for this because I'm out of ideas.

This is why i hate Sprint..

38kb a sec data.. i've seen it as low as 2kb/s
Service was full bars. One dropped as i was taking the screenshot..
Should have just kept T-MO. But the allure of 3D got me..
My parents use sprint, i use Verizon..
and Ive also noticed their speeds to be pathetically slow.
nice job sprint! lol
Funny thing is, the only time I EVER have issues with my 3G speeds are
1) At home when I can always use Wi-Fi
2) At school when I don't need 3G for much anyway
If the service in your area isn't enough for you, then you should switch to another carrier. I wish I could switch to Verizon, but they're more expensive and don't have unlimited data.
Here are my speeds, testing around in various places (school, my house, my girlfriend's house, etc.)

So the RTSP and HTTP changing them to 0 and 0.0.0.0 gave you worse speeds?
Sprint blows, i have the same issues in michigan with full bars. They are over congested in my area and don't seem to be in any rush to expand thier 3g network(or introduce 4g). At my other house i get low to average speeds though, also with full bars. IMO, you should never see speeds lower than 800 kbps with 3g coverage. Unfortunately, at my house on the east side of Michigan, the data is frequently between 400-800 kbps, though that is still much higher than the speeds i get when im at my apartment on the west side of Michigan.
keep in mind that the competition is almost always pulling 1500-2500 kbps in areas like mine.

sprint is the only company where I can get the best service at my place. It all depends on locations you can have them but like a router for 4g 3g service in your house.
LOL at least you get "decent" speeds. On my old TP2 I was getting 600 kb now with the 3D I can't get past 32 kb on 3g. If it wasn't for Wimax near me I would be with big red.....sero plan helps. Seems like I got a fancy paper weight when I'm not in a WiMAX area...... Unlimited data so slow you can't use it.

Using iPhone 4s Micro sim with adapter?

I had the Galaxy S II a few months ago but was thinking of picking one up again, as I personally believe its the best Android on AT&T at the moment. Anyway, I'd like to swap between my iPhone 4s and Galaxy S II. I did this last time and didn't have any real problems except data seemed significantly slower on the S II? If I could pull 4-5 Mbps on the iPhone 4s I'd get 1-2 on my Galaxy S II. Of course this was with speedtest.net.
I was wondering if one is going to be using a "Data Unlimited for iPHone 4s" data plan if they'll have issues like this? I was told I would not since both phones are HSPA+ and the data plans are the same. Thanks
Try this.
If that doesn't work, chalk it up to the crappy radios Sammy decided to put in the Galaxy S2s.
I swap back n forth without issue. Like he said, crappy Sammy radio :/
Since this phone has a 21mbps radio what are some average speeds? I can get 9Mbps down on the iPhone 4s.
21mbps my ass. I once got an 8.89mbps, in Oklahoma of all places. But everywhere else I've tried(several cities in Texas, several cities in southern California, and a few places in the states in between), I've never gotten above 6mbps in a high signal area. Most of the time I get about 2mbps.

I get 10-12 mbit if i'm within line of sight of an AT&T tower. Even in areas of so-so reception I tend to get between 3-5 mbit. Upload is more variable, topping off at around 3 mbit, and usually within 1-2 mbit.
That's my AT&T experience in the Boston area. It's worth mentioning Boston is an AT&T test city, and our network up here tends to be kept in pretty good shape. Also, honestly, when do you need more than 5-10 mbit in a mobile setting? I guess it can help with tethering... But seriously. Anything over a megabit to a phone is already pretty sufficient for 90% of today's tasks.
I also have an iPhone 4s in my house as well, and usually it tends to get slightly higher reported speeds, but I've noticed the upload on the iPhone also tends to be more erratic than my GS2. In actual usage it's nearly impossible to tell the two apart. Except of course for that 4.3" SuperAMOLED+ screen...
YMMV.

21MBPS HA! I live right beside a AT&T tower and I only get between 7mbps~9mbps. It is seriously 20 feet from my property.
The speed has nothing to do with signal strength. It has a lot to do with where you live. The higher population density, the slower the speed. You will get great speed if you live in the middle of nowhere (and still have 4G signal).
I did qualify it with still have 4G signals
I live in nation's captial and major hub for internet. And yet my '4G' speed is around 100kbps to less than 1mbps.

Did the same when I briefly loaned my GS2 to someone who's iPhone had taken a dive into a toilet. If you just line it up carefully, it stays pretty well put and worked flawlessly for me.
Due note that since the IMEI associated with the SIM's ICCID will have changed, AT&T might contact you regarding changing your data plan or whatnot.

I can attest to that.. When I was hunting last November out in rural Pennsylvania Mountains, I was pulling 10-12mbps (H+), but when I am in town at work, I barely get edge network speeds...
What modem do you have flashed? Go to Settings > About Phone > and look at the baseband version. That plays a part too... UCPLC5 seems to be the best so far..

Weird place for super fast 3g...

Just felt like sharing this because I find this very odd. Where I live I get about 1.3mbps which I thought was pretty damn fast for sprints 3g but right now I'm on a road trip with some friends and we stopped in Walcott Iowa and while still connected to the Chicago server in the speedtest app (closest server to my house) I just pulled 2+ mbps multiple times in literally the middle of nowhere haha fastest 3g I've had on sprint
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
That's because 10,000 other phones weren't using speedtest at the same time. You were in the middle of nowhere!
Rural towers where probably no one has sprint always work good. Or in many places Sprints edge of their coverage ends but on the past 8 years the city has moved outwards. And sprints network has not expanded like the other carriers. So the citizens don't use sprint in that area.

I'm gonna ask my dad to do a side by side with his note 2, if his is significantly faster, which I have a feeling it will be, I'm gonna have a bone to pick with T-mobile.. I won't accept this phone

I got some good speeds here in honolulu.
Here in the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area of North Carolina, T-Mobile's LTE download speeds are great (anywhere between 15 and 30 mbps), but no matter what, upload speeds will NOT top 10 mbps. Normally it'll jump above 10 then immediately go back down to somewhere around 9.5 mbps and stay steady there. No idea why, and it doesn't appear to be device-specific. It did the same thing when I had a GS4 GPE, and it does the same thing on my Z Ultra GPE. Makes no sense.
The same thing happened to me when I went from the S3 to the S4, it dropped about 10mb for a few weeks and then was right back up in the 40's and 50's. Now, coming from the S4 and now using the S5 I'm in the same boat, getting 28mb down and about 6mb up. I'm not really mad at all considering I just downloaded Wolf of Wall Street in 20 mins. Are we as consumers getting that impatient? I remember how stoked I was to see 3g when I had the original Mytouch.

Holy crap. Where are you located? haha
Lol Mckinney tx. I switched from AT&T to t-mobile and it was quite a surprise. I can only get those speeds around my neighborhood anywhere else just typical lte speeds.

Just moved to Tmobile from sprint. Have literal perfect signal in my house. With sprint I had no signal. 4G seems good to me. Most I got with sprint was 18Mbps. I'll take the perfect signal and 40+ Mbps any day

I usually get 20-40 down here in Portland OR and at least 10-15up anywhere I go.
I really really sad though because my office literally just moved a mile and since I have been here the fastest I've gotten down is about 20 and up at most like 7. Its really sad too because I am near the Portland airport and its a dense area that should have fast coverage
I live by the Portland airport also and only get about 10-15 download. Ill have to check the coverage map.

35 - 40 here in Seattle.
I have been an ATT user for years - when the S5 came out, on a friends advice I moved to TMOBILE - when I got my S5 and started checking speeds in my house and near work - I was disturbed to see speeds less than 1/2 what i used to get on ATT - at first I thought it was my S5 but when I put the Sim Card in my NOTE 3 -I got the same slow speeds.
I canclled tMOBILE and went back to ATT and was pleasantly surprised to find that ATT Speeds were even faster than they had been before.
Last year, my average speed from inside my houuse was around 6-10mbps -not bad - closer to work I got awesome speeds - almost 30mbps at times - usually 22-25 - very respectible.
BUT, now I am getting 12 to 18mbps in my house - and even faster speeds near work, often clocking in at 35 to 50mbps - ATT seems to have kicked into overdrive here - (Milwaukee) - this is not a commercial for ATT - many of my friends swear by TMOBILE - but I guess they just didn't have the towers close enough to me to give me any real speed - while ATT has become a rocket ship for me - and my S5 is faster than any other phone I have had before -

No one in my office has an ATT LTE phone but we have many times done a speed test with all our of phones out at the same time and the Verizon users get 20-40mbps down and I would always get 20-40 down as well, the sprint person would get like 5 down lol (on LTE too). VZ upload speeds are usually faster that TMO but that really is not a big deal.
There is a difference in the network coverage but I'm not willing to get rapped by Verizons prices for a little better coverage, that is what wifi calling is for. And in an emergency now you can jump on most any network with these phones so that doesn't matter either.
Where i live I do have very good TMO coverage, I completely understand switching because you don't have good coverage at home, that is a big deal.

Something is wrong.. When I was in brooklyn, I was getting 25 down average, in the city I was getting 40-50, was insane.. I'm the OP for this thread and I was worried because I kept doing a speed test and wasn't normal. I just moved into a new place and it just seems to be where I'm at. I see almost 10 or more wherever I go.. the truth is , anything over 4 down and it doesn't matter anymore. besides downloading, videos and all other data required things are just as good if I was getting 4 down or 400 down,
