[Q] Wait for ICS or but and upgrade??? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

I have an Asus Transformer Primes on pre-order. My big question is whether I am better off waiting until it comes loaded with ICS or if buying now with honeycomb and upgrading when ICS is available. Will I lose anything by upgrading rather than starting off with ICS fully loaded?
Thanks very much for any thoughts you might be willing to share.

I'd say get it now while you can. This device selling like hot cakes and will be very hard to find in stores or even online for a while. There is no diff. Getting one now then upgrading to ICS vs. Getting one with ICS already preloaded. If you wait, expect to have a chance of getting one mid January to mid febuary. Not worth the wait, IMO, of you are able to get one or preorder one now.

Um why would you think you would lose something? No you will not lose anything. ICS is ICS, whether its an upgrade or pre-loaded.
The only thing you will lose by ordering now is your sanity as you try to track one down and then wait for it to come.

get it while you can! It may be several months before stock is steady.

[Q] Is Gingerbread going to be released on June 30th for the Thunderbolt?

Come ladies and gentlemen, place your bets!
i think so lots of websites have scans of an internal memo stating the update as the 30th. if not the 30th then the 7th since thats when free hotspot promo ends and they said a software update would disable this.
No

i agree verizon loves releaseing things on thursdays
Considering that there have been few rumblings (other than some well placed informants), I'd have to say probably not a full blown release, but maybe the start of soak testing.
I'm not holding my breath
Who really cares anyways?
If you are on this forum, chances are you are already running some type of GB on your phone and it is probably better than any "stock" release whether that is tomorrow or a month from now.
the GB roms run great (im on theory)....but come on man...its not going to be as stable as a final GB + Sense build...there are many proprietary files that are not complete with the test build...i cant see why the new official build wont increase are GB rom experience

Just wait for one of the devs to make a rooted version of the release and then flash the zip to your phone. Simple as pie.
you shouldnt update if you are rooted. wait for a rooted stock firmware.
I highly doubt it since there's been little or no talk at all about it. I was wondering since I just snatched one off of CL for super cheap. guess I'll go root instead.
I'd like to point out that it was all of 3 weeks ago they leaked something that looked like a reliable RUU called MR2 that was beyond question Froyo. Is it just me, or am I the ONLY one that took one look at that fake looking photo and said to myself "Dear God, the only thing that would look more fake would be a duck bill on a cactus." Can you imagine what the order for such a thing would sound like? "Hey, Johnny! We need and INTERNAL MEMO drawn up. Make sure to put our logo in the LEFT corner where NOBODY would ever put a logo on official stationary, be sure to add a picture of the device incase NOBODY has ever seen our first LTE phone, and definitely add specific OTA release numbers AND the radio version that will include so that our boys down in technical support will grow big rubbery ones as they dangle the information out there at hords of pimple-faced geeks calling with 'problems' but are really just hoping for the next big scoop for Androidforums.com" If Gingerbread come out in an official OTA today, I will eat my Thunderbolt and post the video on Youtube. I promise. In fact, if it comes out in the next 90 days, I'll eat the phone.

Had a thought on the next shipment of tablets - Shipping with ICS?

Just had a crazy thought.
An Amazon CSRep said that they would be receiving a shipment of Primes about mid-week next week. Ice Cream Sandwich launches on the 12th which is Thursday.
Is it possible that these new tablets will come pre-loaded with ICS?
its possible, but why would it matter? the ota is going to take you 10-15min max.
My first thought on that is doubt simply because I'm sure the manufacturing process from top to bottom plus packaging and shipping from the factory to the distribution centers in the US would require enough time that you're probably receiving a unit that was really manufactured at least a month prior. Tough to say though without knowing all the specifics for the units that are going out then.
highly doubt it but doesn't matter anyways. You can easily just apply the OTA to install ICS.
100% chance no, and who cares OTA will take you their. Why didn't you ask the CSRep? You really thought you would find someone here that had that answer?
Don't think so. It will first be put together, packed, shipped to the shop.. That isn't happening in 1 day.

Also, I was asking for opinions, not cold hard facts.

Could be right, although they won't ship with ics. Remember logitech sent out the revues with 3.0 stickers and didn't sell them until it could ota

My point Amazon would not know neither would any of us? and who cares really? the OTA will give you ICS what is the difference?
I would take the OTA over a prepacked ICS just for the fact the OTA would be the latest version.

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean coming in the Fall

Oh man,
It's coming in the fall while we don't even have 4.0 ICS available yet
http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9224652/Google_exec_hints_of_Android_5.0_release_this_fall_?taxonomyId=15
I'm "in love" with AT&T
You're probably right, but it seems Rezound users aren't anxious to get 4.0, if you read through this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1519312
I want ISC cause i've heard that optimizes to run faster on the devices (own a Xoom ISC). And my Note much slower and lagging than my ATT SG2.
The premise of the group was that phone manufacturers and wireless carriers would provide timely upgrades of devices during their first 18 months on the market.
That being said, following ATT upgrade timeline, we should see it by next Christmas if indeed it is released by fall.
I'm starting to think that if you want a specific flavor of Android, you better buy it with the flavor you want. Once they have you hooked they don't seem too interested in upgrading the OS. That goes for all devices, not just the Note. Just another reason to hate AT&T.

I heard ya. ICS is not really my flavor. I just hope the Note will be smoother with ICS. If the Note as fast as my Gingerbread ATT S2 then i have no complain at all. Seriously, I use ICS 4.03 in my Xoom and didn't really see any huge improvement that i need to die for.

Most people don't even have ICS yet (nor will probably get it by THIS fall). I'm sure this is going to come to devices further down the road than we expect.

Yep. It's odd to see people buy devices with some anticipation of an upgrade later rather than to use the device as is out of the box. True, manufacturers and carriers *should* provide updates, but as a consumer you should be sure that you're satisfied with what you're buying when you buy it.

Do you really believe they would have released an update while the Rezound has been on sale from last week through today. The release of ICS would not have been done until the sale is over. Otherwise you would have had units being sent out without ICS from the early part of the sale and then sent some out at the end of the sale with ICS. It would have complicated everything, now the sale is over they can address thier attention to releasing ICS. Well at least I hope.
I don't think that Verizon promised this update on 4/6/2012. Wasn't this a Best Buy bogus post for both the Razr getting ICS on 4/4 and the Rezpund 4/6, neither of whaich was true. I have not read anywhere that Verizon published this release date for ICS for the Rezound.
It wasn't confirmed by anybody but a BB poster which had no evidence behind it anyway.

all speculation and rumors at this point. im telling you guys, i don't expect it until at least summer.
I honestly don't care anymore. I have fully working ICS on my Rezound. If they never officially released it, I wouldn't care much since I already have it. What would be nice however, is if they dropped the source code on us for the leaks that are already floating around.
I still don't understand the outrage that some people have over it. I mean, the people that care about it are here or on other sites that have info about rooting and development - so if you want ICS - go get it. The rest of the people - they probably don't care because they just want their device to work, and it does out of the box untouched. It works pretty darn well too.

Shame it's a good phone... I was going to pick up a Nexus til I started seeing the issues they were having. Couldn't be happier with my choice to get a Rezound instead.
this is so far my fav phone period but i honestly doubt vzw will ever bother pushing ics onto this thing. if they do though, it'll be in the distant future when ics becomes standard on most devices.
Why care about a bloated up release from VZW that has an older version of Sense? When there are several awesome Sense 4.0 roms that run smooth as butter available for us to flash. Get with the times brotha.

1 Month since we've heard from Gary

Its hardly old ! Alot of primes are still under warranty...
I've now unlocked so my warranty is void (perhaps what asus want from everyone really) but i dont consider the prime to be an old device.
I agree that Gary was only here to calm the flames though, as you rightly say theres no point sending a marketing guy .. i honnestly think his purpose was to keep us quiet for a while. and it worked!

Spot on mate, GARY is not ASUS, he just represents/works for them.
Abandon all hope!!
I have pmd and sent Gary emails recently also the other person he said to contact (asus_usa) with no response from either.
My prime has had the infamous wifi issue which actually got worse through updates---it is sitting in RMA AFTER a LEVEL3 TECH AT ASUS said they would treat it as warranty even though i had unlocked the bootloader
Its status is waiting o customer-out of warranty/customer induced damage----it has been there almost 1 month!!!
A person in rma said it is going to cost me 165 for motherboard and 40?? not sure the exact figure labor WTF. She also said after last email she would look into it and reply ASAP--that was last week Thursday
I feel I have been lied to, misled, and ripped off!!!
happened last month as well a month in between cryptic messages, honestly give up on Asus Already we have had these devices nearly a year now and support has been horrible how long since we got an update again?, if you want something less buggy grab CM10 or Hairybean and call it a day, ASUS will slap JB on the device and probably be done with it, whenever that happens
Since everyone's prime has a year warrenty then I'd say all Primes are still under warrenty. My Prime runs just fine. Not compalining it would be nice to get an update of some sort.
Here in Germany we have 2 years implied warranty. So there is over 1 year until the first warranty runs out.

Late in Prime's life?
It's a 9 Month old Tablet, with better specs than most things out there running JB already. Not to mention that the hardware it's pretty much the same as the other Transformers.
Honestly, how many updates have been promised/delivered to your phones in its first year. The transformer prime has already gotten more updates than any of the phones I've had. And JB was confirmed for us shortly after Google announced it. I have a flagship phone from last year and it only just got official ICS. Asus supports there hardware better than any company. God forbid they make JB as stable as possible.

It has been exactly 98 days. That is really not very long at all, particularly when you take into account that its a major release rather than just a minor update to the existing OS. Think of all the phones out there that were released after the TP that have not even seen ICS yes let alone JB. You folks are update addicts.

It is a long time if you consider that the Prime is suffering from several software related issues which should have been fixed several months ago. ASUS should be pushing out patches every few weeks until the tablet is working as advertised.
I don't recall seeing in the Ads for this tablet that "You can expect ANR messages constantly when browsing, or your tablet will be unusable when the Play Store is updating all your apps! Yes you to can enjoy these great features all for a low price of $500! But wait theres more... If you order now, you can enjoy completely random reboots at no extra charge!"
It has been almost a year since its release... the prime should be stable as hell right now, but that is not the reality. I am not usually one to complain about these types of things, but even I am getting frustrated with the lack of fixes. Really hoping that JB will solve all of these problems and make the tablet work as it should have from day one.

Yes, and how many of those phones have crazy QC & wide range of issues like Prime? Plus, you are forgetting that most are on Android 4.04 (final & most stable version of ICS....)
Also, lets stop this argument of "Asus updated often compared to all other device".
While it might be true, it also means PRIME had ton of issues/bugs to fix through updates..... however, the updates only added more issues instead of resolving them.
Plus, those looking for GARY to solve everything... he won't, and he can't. HE IS JUST MARKETING GUY. Nothing more, nothing less...
Those thinking JB will resolve all of your current issue... IT ALSO WON'T. S/W cannot fix H/W issue...... If you have crap WIFI.. blah blah blah... it'll be crap with JB as well.
And to those who keep saying.. "mine works fine, ppl are blowing things out of proportion". No, we are not. Glad you have a working product that suits your need.... but... DUE TO CRAZY QC issue, there are MANY.. I mean MANY who have absolute garbage device. Yes, we all tried calling customer support, contact gary/asus_tien, ***** at where we purchased our tablet, RMA... blah blah blah for refund or whatever.

I might suggest that "more updates than any other phone" is not a good thing.
All these updates are band-aids for the TF201 beta that should never have been released in the first place.
Poor decisions by an even poorer company.

How can constant sw updates to address issues be a bad thing? My epic touch has HORRIBLE battery life after the move from GB. You know what Samsung did? Called it quits on the s2. Asus is still pushing updates to the original transformer. Fixing issues with updates sounds like good practice to me.

You make that sound like a good thing. The reason the Prime received these updates is because the OS and possibly the hardware was horribly kludged. Every update was put out to address reboot, SoD, freezing issues, Wifi, GPS, Bluetooth, the list goes on. It had nothing to do with improving functionality as much as it did giving the expected functionality to the unit.

That's exactly what there trying to avoid this time around. 3 semi stable ICS updates that introduced new issues. Or 1 JB update that they test the crap out of. The reason its taking so long (which isn't really that long) is cuz prime owners have a tendency, rightfully so in SOME cases, to complain about everything. My point is there is no justified reason to complain about there software update practices.
