I obviously don't know what I'm doing but hopefully on of you can help. Below is my current SGH-1777 in the "about phone" stats after I tried to root my phone. I didn't understand the root instructions very well (Ya stupid me) and temporarily bricked my phone because after the reboot I got the evil yellow triangle. I could see the options to chose from but none of them would respond.
So I reconnected my bricked phone to my PC and put the phone in download mode and reinstalled the stock kernel which I had saved earlier and the phone works normal again, but it looks like I still have the installs from the root first root attempt:

I was rooting my phone because I'm pis... off at Samsung and AT&T because part of the reason I bought this phone was for the NFC feature and wanted to use Google Wallet. I also read where rooting the phone improves battery life and get rid of all the bloatware AT&T stuck me with. In my software list I see where I have Superuser and the ROM manager still installed.
Do I need to start all over and how do I do that, or am I just missing a piece of the puzzle? I think one mistake I accidentally made was using the ODIN 1.82 instead of the 1.85 but when I try to PDA the 1.85 now the PDA screen flashes for a second and disappears.

sounds like you rooted it correctly the first time. That yellow triangle doesnt mean you screwed it up. It just means you flashed a non-stock kernel and you tripped the counter. Thats all. Nothing to worry about there.
I dont think you can Google Wallet just yet from the i777. You can, however, remove bloat or better yet, just load a custom rom from one of the great devs.
If you see the superuser app, you're currently rooted. All this info is documented already in stickies.
The info in your About Phone screen is the same as stock out of the box. It would also look the same for stock rooted, and the same with custom roms based on stock. You can make these modifications without changing that info.
The I9100 boot screen with the yellow warning triangle is caused by flashing a non-stock kernel using Odin or Heimdall from a computer. That in itself does not mean the phone is soft bricked.
You can install a custom kernel with nfc support (Entropy512's latest daily driver), but it does not include support for Google Wallet. Support for Google Wallet is a fairly complex programming task that will be a long while appearing if ever.
Please read the guides linked in my signature. There is a lot of good information in there. If you still want to install custom software, a good way for a beginner is to follow the step by step guide.

NFC isn't the kernel - it's just a permissions XML and modified Settings.apk (on I777-based ROMs. Hellraised I9100 ROMs only need the permissions XML, which is included in Hellraiser)
I am pretty much with everyone else and think you are probably rooted. I would just download TB or Root Explorer from the market and see if Superuser allows you root to access either of these apps. Having Superuser on the phone would normally mean you are rooted but to make sure you can run one of the above programs to make sure you are allowed access.

There are many different stories to talk about.
As it is very difficult for me to identify your interests and knowledge, I reduce my answer to the IMO most important threads for SGS2:
1. Intratech's Official Firmware thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
Please read the first post. There is a detailed description of how to flash a new Firmware/ROM to your phone, and there is a Quick Root Guide too.
This rooting method is very elegant (as you do not get a yellow triangle and the binary counter will not be increased), but it is a little bit "manual".
For a little bit more "automated" rooting, look at the next thread.
Most important is, that you can find the latest, official and stable Firmware version most as non-wipe together with the corresponding stock kernel, which you might need for getting rid of the yellow triangle after flashing a rooted kernel (such as CF-Root or SpeedMod).
I always prefer flashing Frankenstein ROMs from third post, as you can combine them to any other Firmware parts, such as Modem/Phone/Baseband (for inter-connectivity) and CSC (for region and/or carrier dependent customizations) files.
2. Chainfire's CF-Root thread => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399&highlight=CF+Root
Everything you need to root your phone is to flash a rooted kernel to your phone (See description in first post).
And if you want to get rid of the yellow triangle, Chainfire has described it in his second post.
The only thing to do is to find the corresponding kernel for your ROM.
So, it is useful to flash a new ROM first, then flash the corresponding CF-Root kernel and you have root access on your phone.
There are many other goodies which come along with CF-Root kernel, such as ClockWorkMod (CWM) recovery mode (an extended recovery mode including features, such as backup&restore, clear Dalvik cache, flash other zip files from sd card, etc.) and CWM Manager app (to have a very user-friendly app to make use of most new CWM recovery features).
But you can use any other rooted kernel, which is compatible with your ROM, to root your phone.
3. Custom ROMs ... such as CyanogenMod ...
There are many, custom ROMs and kernels optimized for different things, such as better performance (higher scores in benchmarks) or longer battery life.
You have to take your time and search on yourself what you really want most and which custom ROM or kernel you want to try.
Stick to the SGS II Official Android Development forum => http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1058

Just to be on the "safe" side, do a backup before flashing.
If you have CWM recovery mode (or CWM Manager app), just do a complete system / nandroid backup.
So you will be able to restore this backup, if one of the tested custom ROMs or kernels messed up your phone.

By reading the threads stated above, multiple times, very carefully.
I can jailbreak a phone in my sleep, but this stuff kinda went over my head too. I got the GS2 (my first android also) a couple of months ago and have been reading up on stuff periodically but still don't understand a lot of it.
It's why I'm glad there are so many helpful people who write clear guides on how to do stuff.
I'm sure by the time the GS3 comes out I'll have a bit of a grasp on things!!

Yea I was scared too. All I can say is, READ THE STEPS ONCE, TWICE, AND AGAIN BEFORE YOU TOUCH YOUR PHONE.
First off. It's not possible to brick it when flashing a kernel(to root). The only way to brick is replacing the boot loader, only official Samsung ROM's do that and it takes less than a second so the chances are slim. I say you start by downloading CF-ROOT for your current firmware. Just be careful and read the instructions. I also recommend to only flash roms from XDA. Also, never use PIT file in ODIN. Welcome to Android, I was new as well 3 months ago and I've been changing kernels and roms like crazy since then
Your current firmware is KF3. I HIGHLY recommend downloading and installing KJ3 from Intratech's thread. It is very fast. Download the one from Frankenstein firmwares. That will not root, you need to flash cf-root or other rooted kernels to do that.

dont worry mate i felt the same as well..but as stated above by the rest of the posts read carefully the steps and you should be fine honestly
People talk about jailbreaking iPhones being easy, i could say the same about rooting and flashing ROM's, simple to do once you get the hang of it (and read up)
Just take it slow, pour a coffee and read. I can't stress it enough. It'll make you more comfortable when you actually do it.
Search for the "litening ROM" has great step by step including links to Odin and all that good stuff.

So Guys I rooted My SGS 2 using the following method..
First of all, make sure you’re having all these tools mentioned below at the time rooting.
Odin Downloader
XWKDD tar file [don’t extract, leave as it is]
SuperOneClick
USB Data Cable
Samsung’s KIES 2.0 or get it from download page
Install Samsung Kies 2.0,if not installed, as you will need the correct USB driver for software’s to communicate. Turn on USB debugging mode in galaxy s2 from Setting>Applications>Development>USB Debugging
1. Boot device into download mode. For getting into download mode on galaxy s2, first turn off the phone and power it on again by pressing Volumedown button, Home button and Power simultaneously. You’ll see a downloading icon once you go into this mode.
2. Start Odin downloader
3. Connect phone to computer via USB.
4. Odin software will notify you when it detects phone and gets connected.
5. In the software, just select “Auto Reboot” and “Reset Time” checkboxes and leave every other options as default.
6. Press PDA icon and select the XWDD tar file you just downloaded [XWKDD_insecure.tar]
7. Press Start and ODIN will flash the kernel and after that, Galaxy S2 will reboot.
8. Don’t remove the phone from USB and let it reboot.
9. After rebooting, start SuperOneClick and press ROOT.
9. Once again reboot the device.
That’s it, Your Samsung Galaxy S2 is now Rooted!!
Now enjoy all the custom roms and overclocking apps for galaxy without any restrictions.
And I used CWM manager to remove the yellow triangle....

For now just enjoy your phone as is probably. Over time you will find out what you really needed root for. For me titanium backup is number 1.
Unlike an iPhone, even without rooting you can do most things you need but yeah some need root.
Personally I would have rooted using cf root/speedmod etc to have cwm recovery for backups.

You shouldnt worry just a new platform. Depending on how patient you have been after updating the new firmware on your iOS toys jailbreaking can be much worse than this. Apple developer fanboys have a tendency to wrap it up with a pretty little gui and a sexy dress but it is really just as many steps. We just like it au naturel over here

Ok so i have installed Cyanogem Mod 7.1.0 ...
But now i want to get back to my stock firmware because i want to use tv out function which is missing from Cyanogen mod 7.1.0 so can u please help me out in getting back to my stock firmware...
Just go to intratech thread that was linked on first page. Then i would recommend to chose the frankenstein version to be able to reset your counter if needed.
Chose the firmware you want (kk5 is pretty good) and flash it with odin.
You can also flash a custom rom that is based on sammy like checkrom. You can do this trough cwm recovery and don't need to use odin for flashing.
If you don't have cwm yet you can install siyah kernel to get it.

There are a lot of ROMs based on the original Galaxy S software, so if you want the added customization, there are many options.
But what you want to do now to return to the original ROM, is to go in this thread:

Simply download and flash it as a PDA file using Odin.
so i have the i777 and i rooted using a guide on the android central forum
basically i downloaded kies, odin, cwm, and superoneclick
i put the cwm.tar file through odin, and than ran superoneclick, and i was rooted pretty easily
i than downloaded rom manager and through there i flashed CWM. I tried to make a back up using rom manager but that failed, no biggie i hear other people have the same problem. I boot up into CWM using rom manager and it says stuff like "failed to verify whole file signature"
im not sure if this means i rooted incorrectly?
i made a back up just fine using CWM. However i found out this stuff about flash increments and how i flashed a custom CWM kernal or something (sorry my definitions in this subject are still noob)
i decided i want to get rid of the yellow triangle + i9100 message every boot, no biggie but i am here to learn and i figure might as well if i can. I read a couple threads here and im not sure if this is my answer but i think it is please advise
my plan is to go back completely as if i never rooted and than root by using a stock rom/kernal so i dont get the error triangle message as well as the incorrect international i9100 display

i am under the impression that if i flash the .tar file that is 200+mb (why so big) that i will be RE ROOTED and COMPLETELY stock, therefore no error message and no international thing popping up
also, no more flash counter increments ? << this one is also important as this is one major reason i want to re root
im not really sure but i think that by flashing this new .tar it will over ride my custom.tar file that i do not want any more, i dont know how to get rid of it so this is the only thing i can think of
im worried because i dont know if i have to UNROOT before i install entropys thing or if it will just over ride

The write ups he does are top notch and should be mandatory reading for first time visitors.
The file is so big because it contains the entire android os.
The issues you're having in cwm sound like clockworkmod needs to be reflashed.
The triangle will be removed simply by the stock kernel being replaced. The flash counter as of now can only be reset by a usb jig ~ less than $10.
Though a few have reported returning the phone for warranty issues and they did not check the flash counter.
The only way the flash counter is tripped is by using pc Odin to flash a non stock kernel.

There's a stock plus root package. One of the best ways to root in my opinion.
Root means installing SuperUser.apk, su, and busybox. That's it. The stock + root package has those already included, but also gives you the bone stock kernel.
You install a custom kernel to, among other things, get ClockworkMod Recovery.

in reality, 'rooting' your phone is nothing more than placing 2 files on the /system (only one is really needed, since you can download Superuser from the market)
what happens is this:
android version release (say 2.3.5)
extremely smart people find way to exploit a memory hole in the OS, and create a 'rooting' method. what this method does is exploit that hole, which allows for a 'temp root' while it injects the needed files for root
needed files for root:
/system/bin/su <- this is the binary that allows you to retain root access
/system/app/Superuser.apk
without root access, /system is a read-only partition. utilizing the exploit, it will create temp root, then remount the /system partition as read/write, allowing your rooting tool to inject the required files into /system
rooting actually has nothing to do with the device at a true hardware level. it is all within the OS itself. anything outside the OS (recovery, boot, bootloaders, etc) dont get 'rooted' because root is only access to the /system within the OS
samsungs have this awesome ability to be easily rooted via CWM. its extremely easy with ODIN or heimdall to flash recovery/new kernel with recovery built in, and use a cwm zip file to inject the needed files into /system rather than relying on an exploit to do it for you.
its a common misconception that i hate to see when people associate rooting with access to anything outside the OS itself.

ok im back, i read a lot of the guides n a lot of pages and i successfully rooted using entropys 2a method return to stock + root
now i have a 2-3 second delay in my home button, and an additional 1 second delay when i turn my phone ion with the power button to show my display
i also added CWM by using the android terminal and that worked
but im regretting all this because of the delay, my error message is gone so thats good but now i have a delay
what could be the problem? i dont remember any one mentioning this issue and if im the only one than i dont know what to do, also i noticed the flash counter is still at 1 so i know i did everything right

Sounds like you still have reading to do. And kudos to you for taking what they said as constructive criticism.
The flash counter can only be reset by a usb jig. Mobile Tech videos make some very good quality ones.
The delay from the home button is due to the vlingo app shortcut being tied to the home button (double tap home button) so it's waiting to see if you hit it twice before it takes you to the home screen. Cusom roms remove the vlingo app from being there which helps cut down on the delay.
But you may notice it more since what you did. And you should. By adding cwm you likely flashed Entropy512's kernel. Which is an awesome kernel. One of the ways that kernel helps battery life is by setting the cpu govener to conservative. It slows the cpu from jumping too high too quick. That explains why you may have not noticed the delay before you did anything. As well as the delay from unlocking the phone.
For me the extra battery life is worth it. If you don't like the delay one of the easier ways to set it back to ondemand (stock) is to use the app SetCpu:

Hey all, been a member for a while, but lost my account... have a quick question regarding my new Galaxy SII.
I bought the phone pre-owned, and am now considering rooting it. I have read about having to flash an insecure kernel, and that it adds a yellow triangle at the bottom of the boot screen. I already have this yellow triangle, but I know for a fact that my phone isn't rooted.
Is it possible that the previous owner had it rooted, but removed the root in order to sell it, without also reverting the insecure kernel?
Also, is there a way for me to tell if the yellow triangle is because of an insecure kernel, or perhaps something else?

Seems you're running a stock kernel now. Perhaps the previous owner did root the phone as you suggested, but didn't use a jig to reset the flash counter/reset Custom Binary in download mode to "Samsung Official".
what is your plan...
you want to make just stock look again unrooted?

Yep. Go for it Use whatever root method you like.
CFRoot is pretty easy, but it it's up to you. Just make sure you read the whole first page of the thread thoroughly & make sure you understand the 10 or so steps fully. When reading the thread, pay particular attention to the bit "Help ! Which file do I use ?" & you should be fine.

I was asked to root a Samsung Galaxy S II i9100 the other day...
I got the person to back up all of their stuff through Kies and then they bought the phone back to me to try and root.
(Why do they want to root it? To remove the noise on the camera when capturing video - I believe this will help narrow down which version it is..)
I managed to download and install a Siyah version, through Odin, and i have the CWM recovery mode, and also the Download mode available.
When i boot up the phone, it comes up to the Yellow triangle image, and no further...
I thought it was a pretty simple task, clearly i have messed up and not realised the extent of the process - i am clearly missing something out - or downloading the wrong things... Should i be downloading a different version - i can't find what files i should have already - and i don't know how i would be able to download apps to the phone now it's only on recovery mode...
I understand everyone asks these and you direct them to other previous threads, but i've doubted myself on everything i've done up to now, so could anyone clarify the correct steps i should be taking?
I believe the phone was on 2.3.3 before my attempted root, but i don't personally have any other details of the phone....
I don't even mind if i can't root it, but if i could possibly revert it back to stock i would be equally happy as we currently have an unusable phone.. (I don't think it's bricked is it?)

If you are still able to access cwm and download mode I am pretty sure that you are not bricked(but still there is always a small probability) so I recommend you flash a stock rom via Odin, read lots because I have read of an old siyah kernel which has the brick bug, be careful with ics stock as well.
For all the above recommended matters there are hundreds of threads with extensive details.
For Rooting read several threads and choose the easiest method.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, the kernel you flashed ( siyah ) is not compatible with gingerbread....
So as another poster commented, flashing a firmware in Odin will be the easiest way to recover. Then you can try rooting again....
But do your research first....
Afaik. ...rooting methods for gingerbread are "not prolific". It might be advisable to flash 4.0.3 ics or 4.1.2 jellybean and then root that........

Why did you not advice him to update his phone????? You went through all that trouble of using KIES to backup and you didn't update the phone?
A firmeware update might have already solved his problems.
And how could you not read that the flashed Kernel does not support such an old Android version. Rooting has a possibility to cause your phone harm, so it should come naturally that you inform yourself on the topic and double check everything in order to minimze the risks.
I am really sorry for what I wrote, but I just can't understand such a mentality!
First of all, I apologise if I have posted this in the wrong section. Secondly, please be aware right now that the device in question is the S3 4G VERSION. Very different to the vanilla S3. I have dabled in rooting/flashing and general messing around with android firmwares before so I have a mild understanding but please be patient
Now the problem: Rooting. It shouldn't be hard. Should it? Not with tools like chainfires auto rooting kit these days... Alas, CF's auto root isn't doing it for me. At first I was having dramas with KNOX (congrats on loosing a long time customer there samsung). After i got rid of that with the de-samsungizer kit flashed through CWM it stopped showing the stupid "an application has attempted to gain root access and was blocked" crap. However SuperSu continued to crash, I'm assuming because the root was not properly completed. NO error codes or anything are ever returned from Odin, or CWM, everything looks like its happy but just not rooting. Confirmed with rootchecker.
Now a couple of other things I should mention: CWM keeps getting erased or something aswell? Like I'll turn the phone off to go into recovery mode, and im sitting at the bone stock one again, with the little red exclamation mark over my poor android corpse D:
I even tried disabling auto-reboot in ODIN when flashing CF's auto root, droppping the battery and manually starting recovery mode. I get excited when I see the red pirate-droid executing instructions, all goes well, everything is happy, still no root -_-
EDIT: In download mode, knox still exists and has logged EVERY attempt i've made. so everything is definitely executing just fine...
This is also my first time rooting in the presence of KNOX
I don't know what else to do... Am I missing something? is there a glaringly obvious thread or bit of information I've missed?

Ok so I took a break from this for a while cos i got really busy and didn't fancy doing MORE work on my phone when i finally got a spare tic. However, I came back to it today and managed to find a magic combination.

The following is a guide for anyone having issues making the root stick on their GT-i9305 samsung galaxy s3 4G/LTE on android 4.3. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS ON ANY OTHER OS VERSION, VARIANT OR DEVICE.

A superSu update. So i went there grabbed that package ( SuperSU Download for update package ) and started my grand master plan. If you would like to actually read what hte user said yourself, its in a quote bubble naer the bottom, just before the comments.
now. Using an important piece of information in a thread I cannot, for the life of me, find through my browser history (apologies) I grabbed a copy of pihlz touch which you can find in the following thread: [CWM][PhilZ Touch][GT-I9305] 4.00-b21 Touch … | Samsung Galaxy S III I9300, I9305 | XDA Forums
Now. grab yo-self a copy of busybox's supersu root How to root Galaxy S3 I9305 with SuperSU 1.02 - Samsung Update located on that page. Make a folder on both your phone's internal storage and external, name them both the same thing and something you will remember. For instanceI called mine Root stuff. I only do folders on each of them in case I can't extract from external for whatever reason, its not necessary. Put both the supersu update you downloaded earlier and the one you just downloaded from above, busyboxes root, into both of these folders if you did it my way.
To avoid having to reboot your phone an extra time, make sure you did the above step BEFORE moving on
First up, I flashed philz touch with Odin (ensure you have the latest version, use your PDA checkbox and be sure that auto reboot and F. reset time are checked). Next up, turn your phone off and boot into your magnificent (no seriously, this is amazing. Its like a GUI in todays BIOS's...) new CWM recovery mode. Go into advanced and hit reset permissions or something like that... My phone is downstairs atm and I CBF in going and getting it and rebooting. Note that I am unsure if this is actually an essential part of the process, this is something I did because I worried about the permissions on the phone after my, by KNOX's count, 15 attempted flash operations -_- More like freaking 20 thousand....
Now once you have done that, go back to the main menu and tap install zips. FIRST you select the actual root, supersu1.02 busybox. Next, select the extra zip file option and que the UPDATE supersu-v2.02 after the actual root package. Once you have done this, swipe to install. THESE TWO PACKAGES MUST BE IN ORDER!!!!
Thats all I did. My phone rebooted and I was able to use Root checker to conform the root, allowed access to supersu and no crashing. Finally. THat was way too hard.
