Hi all, I just rooted my nook tablet and I have the marketplace installed. Now, I want to access all my 11 extra gigs of fun. But file expert won't mount anything r/w...which makes me think WTF... by the way I'm a noob and need to be treated like one
Here's what I've done
Rooted the nook...choose the honeycomb option
then I downloaded the file expert app
Then i went into the app's settings and enabled root explorer
Then I navigate to the Phone Internal Storage and try to mount things or copy and paste things and I get pwned...
Why is this not working, what did I do incorrectly?
File expert? use root explorer (paid) or super manager. Some say es file manager, but I can't get past sdcard folder.
are you trying to get the rest to show up on your pc when you connect it with usb? if so, this wont happen. if you just want to browse it and copy or paste stuff, use es explorer.

remove sd card and es explorer will show you your tablet. if this works, then the problem is you are just not browsing correctly in es explorer. at the top there is an option that lets you chose phone or sd card. Default is sd card, you have to switch to phone... (tablet)
With ES, I'm getting a similar problem. Maybe I'm navigating to the wrong place, but I navigated to the place where the welcome video is..then I just tried to create a new file and it tells me "Sorry, Operation Failed" What can I possibly be doing wrong?
IT does let me read and play the welcome video file, but it won't let me access files... Is there a setting that could be fing me in my anus? Thanks for the help guys.. (no, I'm not trying to access it via my computer)

In es file manager settings, enable root explorer and mount /system as writeable. Change home directory to /. You should then be able to see all folders.

No need to remove sd card. Just change home directory in es file manager settings to /. You will then see all folders. Enable root explorer and set /system as writeable also in root settings.

What's the best file manager with root enabled? (possibly free )
Sent from my MB525
for me is file expert
File Expert does the job for me
I like Astro. It has all the usual tools of any file manager, and it remembers the settings of each folder like windows explorer in PC.
No root mode for both of them or do I need glasses?
Sent from my MB525
Ooops sorry FE doesn't have root access as yet.
You can probably manually give Astro root permissions, but it does not ask for them by itself. Instead, it just states 'insufficient permissions'.
I myself prefer Root Explorer. It's basic, but because of that, not cluttered with features I do not need in a file manager.
I've been using Super Manager.
The free version gives you root explorer capabilities, including R/W.
Some features are locked down unless you pay, such as the ability to directly open/edit files in the root explorer function but a quick'n'dirty workaround is to copy the file in question to the SD card, edit it to your hearts content and paste it back over the original.
Same as above - super manager seems ok

I've just started using super manager as i needed to instal apps to the system/app file and couldn't do it with File Expert. Quite like SM now and it does what i need.
Root explorer is great! I use the paid version for all my tasks, but I will try super manager as it seems to have many followers!
i also use root explorer, try the free version, i went for the paid one. it's very easy too use
I have tried out a couple(ES, FE Astro) but I really like Super Manager after having used it.
The amount of options and tweaks and the free root access combined with a solid ui makes it an easy choice for me.
For those that dont know.
ES File Explorer (free) works just fine with root. Here is a trick. I just stumbled upon it while trying to mess with it.
Settings -> Home Directory
change home directory to be "\" instead of "\sdcard\"...
waaalaa, it's there....i was able to edit a file, didnt try saving it.
give it a shot and let us know..

If you tried saving it, you'd have seen ESFE pop up an error message. Its root capabilities only work on a couple of custom ROMs.
the best file manager is the ADB shell
but super manager is OK too.
Hey all, I borked my contacts app while deleting things with Root Explorer
Therefore I am hoping some kind soul will point me in the direction of where I can download these two files.
blur_yahoo.apk and blur_yahoo.odex
(p.s. I am running Sun-198_6)
Thanks!
Hi, here what you need:
View attachment blur_yahoo.tar
Lovely - I will now try to install them.
Thanks!
directions
Just in case anyone else needs install instructions:
(written by someone other than me)
Worked like a charm!
Use Root Explorer to copy the blur_yahoo.apk and blur_yahoo.odex files from your SD card's backup of the System/App folder that you just created, then paste those two files into the phone's root System/App folder. (You will need to click "mount r/w" to mount the folder as read/write before you can paste the app there...) Then, you will need to long-press the blur_yahoo.apk and blur_yahoo.odex (one at a time) and select "Permissions", then change the permissions for each file so that the only (four) blocks checked are Owner: Read & Write, Group: Read, and Others: Read. Remove checks from any of the other blocks. (Basically, you are setting the permissions to match all of the other apps in the System/App folder...) Select "Ok" and then reboot your phone; the Yahoo Email Authenticator 2.3.4 app should be reinstalled successfully and your Contacts app will function well once again!
Help with directions
Can someone give me help with these directions? Ok I've already downloaded the file above to my laptop. Now I am guessing I have to move it to my phone. I read where I have to move it to "System/App folder". I've looked in my SD card and the internal storage of my phone... I don't see a System App folder. I have also read that I have to create one?? Create one on my SD card? Thx in advance....

The /system/app is found on your internal memory not your actual SD cad. And you have to use root explorer(or another similar app) that allows you to access root folders to copy and paste the files into the folder then fix your permissions and reboot. Stupid question, but you DID unzip the file to end up with .apk files right..?
Will someone please help me get root access with ES File Explorer?
I was looking for a good file explorer utility with a root explorer feature. I already had ES File Explorer installed and saw that it supposedly has a root explorer feature. Well, I've searched all through it and I must be missing something because I can't find any way to explore anything on my NT except for the sd card.
I've went into the settings, down to the Root settings and checked Root Explorer and Mount File System but this hasn't seemed to help. I see no way to "get to" the root directory. If I try using the up arrow to move up a level in the directory tree, I can't get up any further than the sd card. It just say press again to close.
What am I missing?
Thanks to anyone that may be able to help get to where I want to be.

In settings, and you need to set home directory as "/". Then you'll have access to the entire file system.
What tgraves said as I have complete access to my nook with Es File explorer.
duh! That was so easy. Now I really feel like an idiot.
I think my wife is right. Sometimes I can make even the simplest things seem soooo hard...
Thanks for your help guys.

ES File Explorer Root
Good tip.
Thanks
don't worry... this was a great thread to start because i just found it with google and was looking for this answer also!
whoot!
Tell your wife she's always right
Trust me...
If you don't want to change your home directory to '/', you hit favorites and hit the icon that looks like a phone. That should take you to '/'. I think that's what the icon looked like. Anyways it's in the favorites menu.

I had been looking for the exact same thing. Thanks for your help.
I have the little phone icon so I assume I'm in the root directory. Next question - since this is where the additional 12 GB of space is, is there a "best place" to put my files that I don't want to tote around on my sd card? We're talking music, docs, etc.
Also - Is there a method so I can see "/" when connected to my laptop? Would rather move files directly to the root directory than have to copy to sd card then copy/paste to "/"
I find root explorer to be better.
Sent from my BNTV250 using xda premium
in the setting, tick all the boxes for "root settings" then from the "/" directory, you will be able to access the internal storage and others ( sd, 1gb space allowance)
What I meant was, is there any specific folder under "/" that I should put my own stuff in, or maybe create a new one?
B&N put all the reserved free space in '/data'. See this thread for workarounds. Accessing it via USB is another story, so you'll probably need to copy files to the 1gb partition then move it. Another option would be to use Wifi File Manager. Depending on the speeds you get via USB it may not be a bad alternative.
When using ES File Explorer to move music files from /data to /data/media it says "invalid path." When I tried moving it to a new folder I created under /data, it also failed.
Questions:
1. Is every folder under /data locked away from access thru ES File Explorer?
2. Is my only option to store content directly under /data?
Root the Access.
hi..
I have ES File Explorer installed and i want to install other font(.ttf). but when try to copy from sdcard and paste in '/system/font' folder, it shows an error : copy failed.
In Setting --> Root Setting, only first two options are enabled 1) Root Explorer and 2) Up to Root. other two 3) Mount File System and 4) Backup System Apps are disabled.
Also, when I try to check 1st one Root Explorer, it shows an error:
When 'SU Request' dialog popup, please select 'always allow'
can any one help me to install font in my android device?

Have you enabled Root Explorer's "Mount R/W"?
Greetings...I decided to create this thread to ask this question since the original thread was related to a different question...
A previous thread suggested to select mount r/w to enable read/write using Root Explorer...
I have ES File Explorer installed...Is that the same as Root Explorer?...
I select ES File Explorer and I can position myself on either /, /root, /system
directories but I don't see where I can select mount r/w to enable read write....
Sorry for the confusion, but I'd really like to get this resolved...
Thank you...
In ES file explorer go to settings scroll down, at the end you will see Root Settings with 2 options Root explorer and Mount File System check both.

Veronica(lavero.burgos) thank you very, very much!...Much appreciated...
I'm almost done...I've completed steps 1 - 3 below and saved it...
How do I complete step #4?...
(Again, THANK YOU very much!)...
___________________________________________________________
Method 1: Using Root Explorer
1. Set /system to read-write
2. open the file /system/bin/clrbootcount.sh in text editor
3. Add the following line at the bottom:
Code:
setprop persist.service.mount.umsauto 0
4. Save and set permissions to 755 (All Read, Top Write, All Execute)
In ES file explorer long press the file you want to change permissions, scroll down and select properties from the list. A window will pop up then change it like this:
User: check read, write and execute
Group: check read and execute
Other: check read and execute
~ Veronica
Sent from XDA premium using my Nook Tablet
That did it!...Many thanks again lavero.burgos...
Just one thing I want to point out - I did not see "OWNER" in the list, but "Other" instead...Does that sound right?...
So, this is how I updated the file:
User: Read, Execute
Group: Read, Execute
Other: Read, Write, Execute
Thank you...
Yeah that's fine sorry got confused with RT lol, just one thing User should be write permission and not "Other"

My omission: it's "Settings->Tools->Root Explorer->Mount R/W"
Depending on your ROM build version, if you don't see "Settings" menu button for ES File Manager, you'd need to add it (the "three vertical dots" button) to the homescreen navigation bar via the tablet's main "Settings->System->Buttons and Layout".

You should post your question in forums dedicated to your particular phone. The quoted instructions in this thread & forum were validated for the Nook Tablet and might not work the same way on other devices.
I just installed an app "WIFI key recovery" from the play store.
I have an old backup from my stored connections and now I want to put that file back in the application folder.
But where is it?
That app doesn't seem to use standard folders. I tried to search with the ES file explorer but no result.
My folder /data/ is totally empty.
In /system/app/ I also can't find that app.
Are there any other places I can try to look for it?
Check for Android/data or Android/obb in sdcard.
---------- Post added at 04:16 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:13 PM ----------
Or, if you have root, try /data/data in phone mem.
Checked!
Nothing found.
I have root but as I said that folder is empty. No subfolder and no files in there. I also checked all folders if there were hidden files.
Is there an app that can find out on which path apps are installed?
When create a link to the home screen there must be a reference to that app anywhere.
All apps are installed in /data/app or
Where those apps then put their data can either be /data/data or /sdcard/Android/data or /sdcard/data or any other folder on /sdcard
But all apks are /data/app
If /data is blank, maybe you're looking at the wrong /data folder (should be one at root not on sdcard) or using a file manager that isn't very good of hasn't got root access because /data being empty is impossible. Literally impossible
