Since the Photon has gorilla glass, I don't understand why I would put a piece of plastic on the screen to protect it from scratches. Why are people buying screen protectors? Screen protectors were invented when the glass was prone to scratching.

Because gorilla glass isn't scratch proof, its scratch resistant. I've already got a tiny chip on the face (barely noticeable) from accidentally dropping it flat on the face onto the floor at work (tile floor)
The phone feels better without one but the screen protector is a must. I just need to find the right one that doesn't interfere with the amazing feeling of my raw screen

Also depends on what you do for a living, your activities, how you carry your phone, etc. I use one because my job requires me to be in the office and the field. However, others never use screen protectors on any phone and never get a scratch. I love how the screen feels without it but until I'm close to my upgrade date the protector is staying on.
I haven't used a screen protector for years ....treat it like a laptop

1. What they said!
2. My last 4 phones as soon as I got them I walked immediately across the mall and got GhostArmour installed. Now I have OtterBox.
3. Although I treat Photon like 2-day old baby, I would not be caught dead without screen protector. I have sold all my phones for more than I paid from them and when I say "Not a scratch on it" I mean exactly that!

$300.00? LMAO!
I paid $600.00 to tell Sprint "Give me the box and kiss my black a**, I'm not signing anything!
$50.00 for 32Gb Class 10 MicroSDHC Card I got in mail the same day.
$45.00 to have GhostArmor Installed.
$34.00 drinking at Fridays while GhostArmor Installed.
$39.00 back to Sprint because I wanted new leather case.
Subtract drinks, $734.00! da** skippy I will kick out a few $$$ for some protection!!! (But, before anyone calls me a sucker, I got $300.00 for Evo with SanDisk Class 2 32Gb!) So, $434.00, again, without drinks at Fridays but the joy of dissing Sprint!
i have used screen protectors on every, from my evo, to my ds, to point and shoots, if its got glass and its mobile, it has a protetor however i broke that with my mopho. it hat 2 almost invisible nicks on it when i bought it [off contract unblemished aside from those two nicks] for 250, with box and everything.
ive since noticed what i can best describe as swirl marks. they look like a bad orbital polish on a cars paint job. that being said its only noticable under bright light with the screen brightness down. so i just let auto brightness do its thing and i dont really notice them.
I like the anti glare ones i can't stand the shinyness and all the finger prints off the regular screen, drives me crazy, also i like the matte feel of them too.

Always a screen protector for me. Probably not necessary for me - it's usually in a dress shirt pocket, sometimes a holster.
But, once in a while, in a jeans pocket -- and all it takes is a few pieces of sand in a jeans pocket.... (Some of the harder mineral particles in sand are about all that appear to scratch Gorilla Glass)
Seidio screen protector all of the way!
I never bought a screen protector for my photon, was broke after buying it, but I don't feel the need to get one.
I usually don't like the feel of screen protectors, a lot I've tried stick too much. If I were going to buy one I'd get a Steinheil, used one on my Evo and it felt like the protector wasn't even there.
First, use a screen protector, later retracted, now, after two months - not a scratch. The main thing - the careful use!

I ordered screen protectors, however I heard they're not necessary when one has gorilla glass.
It really depends how hard you are on things. Gorilla glass is not indestructable. But then screen protectors were born of a day and age where screens were plastic. Your BB or other candy bar phone had a clear plastic housing the covered the LCD - dropping your phone could ruin your view. And PDAs used styli on resistive touchscreens (plastic) one burr on your stylus and your screen was ruined.
I have never used a screen protector on any glass screen and never had a problem.
Gorilla glass is really tough and i don't believe in screen protectors - but i can't guarantee that you can't scratch it if you routinely keep your phone in a bag of nails while running in the Dakar Rally.

That was hilarious, I'll try not to keep in a bag of nails hahahaha! thanks for your insight.
gorrila glass is made to be stronger than normal glass but is by no means scratch proof, you may not get deep gashes but you can still get hairline scratches which for me are just as annoying.
Yeah im going to have to disagree
Im a mechanic and I used to have a nexus one with a thick screen protector on it. During a one year period I have dropped it kept nuts and bolts in my pocket keys etc. When it came time to sell my phone all I did was peel off the protector and the screen was mint.
On a second note I now have a dell streak and when I dropped it from waist heightand the screen shattered. Not to say a screen protector would have saved it, But It does add some extra protection, especially the thicker protectors. So ... Why not put one on.
Just really depends on you honestly. I've been using an iPhone4 since it came out last year, and never had a screen protector on the front or back. The device is still flawless, I just don't put it with my keys and I try not to lay it on surfaces that are really abrasive. I'd just toss a case on the back and leave the screen naked, it tends to feel and look so much better, especially with high-res screens.

Yes. It does.
Yep... says it on Motorola's website for the Atrix that it uses gorilla glass. And as with the previous poster, i too have had an iPhone 4 since it was launched, and have never had a screen protector on the front. And like him, i don't put my phone in my pocket with anything else. I have my right pocket for money/change/keys/etc... and my left pocket for my phone.

+1 Same here, but with an aging Iphone 3gs, no protector, got no scratches. But it does suck having all that crap in the right pocket.
I have a nexus one. My job puts my phone through hell simply put. To the point where I have destroyed the cover and screen protector. Now I have chips out of my phone's shell but the screen remains in perfect condition(w/o a screen protector for 6 months of solid abuse.)
So, unless you plan on keeping sharp enough objects to damage this screen in you pocket, if you did those would be some holey pockets and legs, I would just keep the money.

I use them only because i get severely pissed off when my screen is smudged to hell from my fingers. The AT&T sold screen protectors, while generally being absolute crap that don't last more than 2 weeks, do an awesome job of hiding fingerprints. The ghost armor i had on my Aria was also good in this regard. I might go that route simply to alleviate fingerprints.
If you opt for the higher-end protectors (Zagg InvisibleShield, Skinomi Techskin, etc) and know how to properly apply them, it improves the look and feel. I use them primarily because they reduce glare and they're smudge resistant, but having the extra protection is a bonus, but I don't put my phone in the same pocket as my keys.

Naugh; I have had my captivate for about 6 months now and no screen protector, no case for that matter either.
The phone has scuffs and dents galore, but the screen is flawless and it goes everywhere with me.

I always put a screen protector on my phones because no matter how scratch resistant they say the glass is, it always scratches. You can always get the regular screen protector and not the anti-glare so that you can maintain the same feel similar to the natural screen.

its like using birth control pills and condoms. It cant hurt.
I mainly used screen protectors for the finger prints and grease on screen issue. Just as others mentioned earlier though, guerrilla glass is far from indestructible, dropped my nexus one on concrete (maybe a foot drop) and it put a really bad scratch in my screen.

Well to start with the Atrix uses a newer concoction of Gorilla Glass. Corning was saying they developed a new Gorilla Glass around December of last year, IIRC. I know the Atrix was one of the models it was being implemented in.
Aside from that...I've already put on a protector. I like to put anti-glare/anti-fingerprint protectors on all my touchscreen devices. It decreases the screen clarity slightly, but it helps to eliminate fingerprints and, more importantly, reduces drag from your finger. Especially if you have any sweat or moisture on your fingers it can really help to reduce the drag. Feels smoother.
The Following current phones and tablets below all have gorilla glass. I have already seen the Samsung Galaxy Tab glass screen with major scratches after a customer dropped it onto the pavement landing face down. Did not crack or break... but the scratches were bad. Same thing can happen to the Atrix so I would definitely consider getting a screen protector. Most of them cheap or not are usually effective.

You don't need a $20 screen protector. Even the very cheapest clear screen protectors will work just fine. But you should definitely buy one unless you enjoy risking the screen being scratched.
Never had one on my EVO and I will never have one on my E3D. My EVO screen is in perfect condition. It really depends on how well you take care of your stuff. For me its a no.
I already have the Zagg on my EVO 3D screen and platinum case on it since yesterday. I have a 4 year old who loves to play with my phone. It's a must for me and it has saved me a couple of times. I replaced mine 2x from him messing with it. When i sold it yesterday, the screen was flawless.. It's just like big Zone said, it's how well you take care of it.
I never had one on my Evo. By the end, I had dropped it a couple of times, carried it in my pocket, etc, and it came out with only minor surface scratches that could only be seen in direct sunlight. So I won't be putting on on my 3D.
ive never had a screen protector on any of my recent phones.evo 4g, arrive, nexus s and now not evo 3d. But an employee at my store somehow managed to get a decent scratch dead in the middle of his. not sure how he thinks he had it in his pocket with a lighter. and he takes care of his stuff. so it is possible
i build scaffolding in a paper mill so a screen protector is a must for me as well as a defender case. i cant tell you how many times a screen protector has saved me from scratches.
You can get great deals on ebay...like 2 dollars for 6 of them.
Of course you need them. It never hurts to have it on there, have had them on all my phones. The one i have now has a couple scratches on it....i know the protectors are weaker than the screen glass but for two dollars why not slap one on there?
I posted an email from HTC in another post about Gorilla Glass.
It's not listed on Corning's site, and HTC says that it doesn't have Gorilla Glass.
Some people say that the email is wrong, but without anyone actually saying there is GG in the phone, I'm assuming that it doesn't have it.
Dear [name],
I appreciate your interest in some of new Android devices like the HTC Sensation 4G and the HTC EVO 3D. You were wondering about the availability of Gorilla glass in either of these new Android devices. Some of our devices come with screens made out of a proprietary formula of glass and some have Gorilla glass. Unfortunately, these devices are not in the list for Gorilla glass.
If you need any further assistance, you are welcome to send another inquiry through the HTC website by going through the Support page (http://www.htc.com/us/support) then tapping ‘send us an email’. You should input all the necessary information requested on the page.

I know some people will argue it, but without anyone actually saying that it does (other than some review or another forum), I don't believe it.
So yes, a screen protector is a good idea. Even if you never need it, it's cheap and it's always nice to have just in-case something does happen.
Thunderbolt had gorilla glass and it scratched super easy. I would imagine just like anything, there are different qualities to gorilla glass. For instance HTC could have cut a deal for a lesser product for cheaper money.
I normally take care of my devices, never really had an issue, except 1 time I was careless and a tape gun thing went flying out of my hand(no idea how) and the blade smacked dead on the screen of my evo. It made a little bubble on my zagg shield, but I still think it would have put a nice big scratch on the screen itself. Just for the occasional f'up, i'm going to be getting a screen protector.
I have screen protectors. The first week I had my Evo 4G I was using the Sprint screen protector. The screen got several little scratches where the screen protector doesn't cover. I bought a full cover shortly after that.
I would carry my phone in my front pocket.
IMO, No 10char

You don't know that. Most anything strong enough to scratch a full glass screen can peel off a screen cover while doing so.
I rarely use Screen protectors - but.. since i'm always an earlier adopter for the latest and greatest phones (yes, i did own and iphone4 at one point) friends and family always take it away from me and mess around. I'll keep a cheap protector on it for a couple months then remove it - and go naked.

$20? I really must start selling screen protectors to you if you are willing to pay that! They only cost about 20 cents in bulk, so some of these sellers have quite a markup! That said, I do think some of the places like Steinheil have a premium product.
Let me ask you this, have you ever seen an iPhone with a scratched screen? Those have gorilla glass too. It does scratch.
I have a clarvue screen protector on right now. Even though I take good care of my phone, a screen protector is cheap insurance. You can't even tell it is on.

no screen protector needed. You can literally take a razor to the screen and it will be fine. It takes a ton of force and something very very tough to scratch the screen. I do run a protector but not to protect but to give a matte finish which works wonders in sunlight and also makes your finger just glide across the screen. The Otter Box Defender has the perfect material screen built in for this.
Does anyone know where I can buy a screen protector that will arrive in Michigan before my phone arrives this week? Skinomi is not what I'm looking for either. If it's not cheaper than the Verizon brand, don't bother please..
It seems like there aren't a whole lot of third party accessories available until this thing drops, huh? I don't remember buying a phone and seeing this small of an amount of stuff available right off the bat.
you wouldnt need a screen protector, its gorilla glass scratch-proof and splash-resistant..
Scratch resistant, not scratch proof. I work in construction where "proof" doesn't exist!

Try looking for scratched Gorilla Glass. It's all over the web. I had the Bionic for two weeks and scratched the corner. I was very careful with that phone because I knew there was a chance I was going to return it. I have no idea what caused it and don't want it on my new phone.
I have read about the special coating that might be on it to make it easier to clean, maybe that's what's scratched. Either way, it's a scratch.
Its sand or grit in your pocket that does for gorilla glass, not the coin and keys.
Why you don't like skinomi?
i found theìr screen protectors absolutely invisible and even fun to apply!
If you can't find any RAZR screen protector, buy one for iPad or for Galaxy Tab, or anyway something BIG, then cut it for your phone and apply
Anyway, it's true, I've scratched my SGS2's Gorilla Glass. It isn't scratch proof. I've scratched it without SAND or DIAMONDS, it has been scratched passing on my metal "buttons" of my jeans'pocket.
It's only marketing.

I ordered one from Skinomi on Nov 4, they gave me a tracking number on Nov 5, and the status has been "The U.S. Postal Service was electronically notified by the shipper on November 05, 2011 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by the USPS or the actual mailing date." ever since. I was kinda hoping I'd have it before I got the phone... bah.
So I'm just being super careful until I get the skin. I have a Skinomi on my iPod Touch and it is just great. ZAGG on my DInc, but I prefer the feel of the Skinomi.
Had a skinomi on my epic 4g touch but took it off. It just seems like it takes away from the brightness of the phones display. I agree though that its a better feel than the invisishield.

So I decided to got without a screen protector or a case for the first time on any smartphone I've owned. It's been over a month and my Razr is flawless. I get a lot of oohs and aahs over it also. It really is too slick looking to want to cover it up.
Can I go 19 more months? Don't know. I guess we'll see if someone unlocks this damn thing. Maybe I won't have to worry about scratching it. If I can't throw some ROMs at it, I'll probably have to get rid of it..

Personally, I think screen protectors are overrated and not needed......unless, however you are very prone to bumping, dropping, rubbing your phone up against surfaces.
They dull your screen and diminish the quality as well...it's a downgrade as far as I'm concerned.
Go without the screen protector as you'll be much happier.......unless you fall under my description. LOL
I've never used a screen protector and for the first time got a case...the Cimo S-Line soft case.
I think I'll go for ZAGG
I don't reckomend the ZAGG invisible shield, it is wothless.
The screenprotector is very badley cut so it is mor than 5mm to short in both directions! + it does look pretty ugly around the speaker. It truley suck.
Just curious as to how many people use a screen protector on their TF. If you don't, how's your screen holding up?
I've had my transformer since black Friday and the screen has not one scratch and I take it to class everyday. I have a case on it too.

I have dogs that like to jump on beds, so I use one just in case. Also I use one so I don't fret about my glass being dirty or when a girl with rings on is playing with it, I will always know I have a perfect glass behind the screen protector. Sadly my screen underneath has funky **** going on like light bleed and a discolored spot

I have a very tiny dot on the border of the glass which I don't like much, just in case.
But the problem is how to apply a screen protector!! on my HD2 with its 4.3" display I had too much difficulty to put a screen protector without leaving dust underneath it, on a 10" display it is impossible....

Biggest tip I can give is to apply the screen protector in the bathroom after running a hot shower to get the steam in the room to make the dust die down. Also, the bit of added moisture in the air helps to let you slide the screen protector around a bit before letting it become settled.

I use clear tape to get dirt out from underneath. But yes bathroom helps although I don't make it steamy. The biggest problem I ran into was aligning the whole thing. One corner would always be off just a tad. I ended up trimming it a bit and I can't even tell.

I use a screen protector on my TF101 mainly because it reduces glare and the fingerprints come off easier and it feels smoother that the regular gorilla glass
My tf101 was a best buy display model. It didn't have a screen protector then and it doesn't have one now. I sell saltwater livestock for a living and I'm a mechanic on the side, so it frequently comes in contact with dirt, grease, and saltwater. Not a scratch on the screen. I use a targus case to protect the screen when its not in use.
Regarding putting a screen protector on. Its just like window tint fellas. Clean screen as best you can. Mix some hand soap and tap water in a spray bottle. Spray screen protector and device and apply screen protector. Now spray front side of screen protector. Use a credit card or rubber squeegee to squeegee the water out from under the protector. As the water comes out it will drag the dust with it. Keep a towel on hand to dry the device as the water runs out. You might see a little water left under the protector after squeegeeing but it will dry completely over the next few days so don't worry about it.

its just too bad that SGP has no longevity... and by that I mean I can still get a martian fields and skinomi products for my old Touch Pro 2 but cant get a screen protector for either OR my TF101 through SGP/Steinheil...
When it comes to screen protectors for me its SGP/Steinheil then Martian Fields (then pretty much anyone else), but like I said, 8-12 Months later they drop it completely... so unless you stock up on them, be prepared to be screwed to find a different brand if you have an issue (I had my nephew destroy one of mine... I couldnt get my finger under the side but 2min with him and me not looking and it was off and bent in half )

My .02 anyway..

I upgrade every year, so that doesn't concern me too much, but that's a good point. I also usually do buy an extra pack

And...you'd be wrong. All those things he did most likely wouldn't scratch regular glass. For the most part keys and coins aren't hard enough. What will scratch glass, gorilla or not, is sand. Sand and grit is everythere. If your hands are dirty its there. It there's lint in your pockets its there. That's the enemy of screens.

I still had some fun when he sliced an Apple on it
Anyway, mine lives with the dock, so my screen isn't in contact with random dirty stuff.

Had the transformer since it was first released. After a few months of ownership i tried the SGP ultra fine matte protector as the insane glare was starting to bother me. Had that on for a few months during which the screen nor the protector took any damage as i keep it docked when its not in use. Took it off 3 months ago and since then i've gotten one hairline scratch thats about a cm long, not noticeable unless you knew where it was.
I would say if you keep the thing docked and take care when cleaning the screen its not necessary to have a screen protector. However if you don't use a dock and the tablet is constantly exposed to any number of things that can scratch it, or you're not in the habit of taking good care of your gadgets then a screen protector might not be a bad idea.
Every time i see one of those glass scratch demos i facepalm as i've had quite a few devices that were supposed to be "scratch proof" get scratched by the most mundane things. Its all about angle, material, and force. I can slice a screen and not get a scratch but angle it a bit and give it more pressure and I bet i can get these screens to scratch pretty easily.
Scratch resistance is awesome in the lab, but in the real world there are just too many variables to be absolutely sure.

Says my Galaxy note.
Got some ugly scratches when I decided to use the flip cover case. Some sand or dirt got in between the glass and the leather cover. My heart is still broken because of it.

So how do we feel about ZAGG screen protectors? I'm looking to put one on my Slider. In the past, I have been pleased with Caseen and their glareshatter screen protectors. Just wondering if there's any really recommended brands?

I've used ZAGG a few times, once on my zune, once on my evo and again on my evo LTE. The original ZAGG product is one of those soft wet apply films that are a bit grippy compared to a hard plastic film protector. I hated it for my zune and i hated it for my evo because of the grippiness as well as the slight orange peel effect. Over time the zune's wore down enough so that it was smooth and had no orange peel, but that took about a year and only in the spots you swipe around to change tracks and volume. Same thing happened with my evo.
On the Evo LTE I was tempted to try zagg HD, which actually was much better than the original film in that it was a lot more clear and had less grip, but alas it was still a soft wet apply film and i just couldn't get used to it.
If you like the grippy texture then the zagg and similiar soft films last longer than the hard plastics. It seems like a love it or hate it situation for a lot of people, myself included.
I will always go with the hard plastic dry install as those are in my opinion easier to apply because you can hover over the screen and slowly lower it as opposed to sliding it around on liquid and then have to squeegee it all out later. Even if i have to replace it once every few months as opposed to once a year for the zagg, i will still stick with the hard plastics.
i know i am in the minority being a fan of zagg, but it looks like they are gonna be making a screen protector

Cheap screen Protector in ebay
To day I found 5x screen protector in ebay just under 10 bucks.
I think it will be good and it is anti glare as well.

I let the Verizon salesman get me to buy their overpriced protectors (3 for $15...) I really don't like it. It's as wide as the screen, but long enough to cover the Verizon logo on top, and the softkeys on the bottom. It has cut outs for the camera and the light sensor.
What I don't like, is that despite the best efforts of the Verizon salesman (and he did try his hardest, there isn't a spec of dust under the cover) the edges don't stick. This is because the phone's glass curves to the edge. This leaves a tiny bit of the protector that isn't stuck down. Not only does this look bad, but it's also going to attract dust and pocket lint to get in there.
Furthermore, the screen protector also detracts from the aesthetics of the phone, it shows finger prints much more than the gorilla glass 2 does, and it adds a very slight color tint.
I think I'm going to remove it and just go without.
If you like Zagg then xtremeguard already has the DNA protectors available. Current sale means they are only 5 bucks a pop. I have used them before and was very pleased.
That is strange I got the Verizon screen protectors and don't have the issue ..however mine isn't edge to edge .. did he give you some type of aftermarket or does it have the droid stamp on it ..?

The Verizon protectors not covering the entire screen (not edge to edge, only the part that's illuminated) is a deal breaker for me. I'll just keep shopping around.
Also, I have nothing against Zagg. I've used Zagg on two devices and they held up great without any of the (noticeable) orange-peeling effect I've read about. My only big complaint with them is the outrageous price.

I am patiently waiting for sgp steinheil, and a decent sleeve.
screen protector
The ArmorSuit MilitaryShield Screen Protector is the best!
Are screen protectors even necessary? I owned my DROID X for 2 yrs without a screen protector and it looked as good as the day I bought it. That only had Gorilla Glass 1, it looks like Gorilla Glass 2 is supposed to be thinner is all, and I assume the same strength.
I am not for one going to put one on. Besides I love how silky smooth the screen is, and despise others with their sticky rough screen protectors.

Because of the curved edges the display has, I doubt there will be ones that will cover the whole thing, unless they come curved... I don't use screen protectors, but for those that do, that's most likely all you will get.
The more I use the phone, the more I'm thinking about just skipping the screen protector this time around. It seems pretty substantial on its own and the great, smooth feel is something I wouldn't want to lose (along with the clarity of the awesome screen, too).

Do any of you guys that don't have screen protectors on have any scratches yet? I know it is not supposed to scratch but that's not always the case. I currently have the Verizon one on mine.

Like I said above, I'm currently not using a protector and I have been shoving it in/pulling it out of my pockets and even dropped it on a wood floor (screen down) and no nicks or scratches...so far.

I just can't use screen protectors no matter what. Some of them have a haze foggy look to them, others feel a tad sticky, and sometimes I'll have the tiniest dust particle under the glass or just a small bubble around one of the edges. <<<---- Each, and everyone of these drive me nuts! Also the touch never feels the same, or as smooth. I don't know about most of you, but I'm very anal about my phones, and never had any glass damage, or scratches for that matter.
My final word.... GO NAKED!!!!!!

I work in construction sites a lot. And I use my flash light app a lot. I will sometimes lay my phone screen down above the ceiling. There is always metal shavings and chunks of cement up there and I do not have the smallest hint of a scratch on my screen. I have also dropped it on concrete and asphalt, still nothing.
I honestly think it is a sales gimmick.

I have a Gnex right now... went naked with that and it was a mistake. I have 2 or 3 small hairline scratches and I take pretty decent care of my phone. I dislike screen protectors but I dislike scratches even more.
i've had an old LG Xenon (text phone) i had a cheap case on it which i ended up destroying after repeated drops on concrete, I've even cracked the screen a little on the side with the case and screen protector on, but after all of that i went naked anticipating an upgrade, but i've dropped it off a 2nd story porch straight down onto concrete with screen face down and not even a scratch. I think that the screen itself will survive alot of impacts, it's the rest of the body (as well as the corner of the screen) that can't take the damage.
I'm going no screen protector, but will put a case on it once the one i want comes out. I dont believe it makes enough of a difference to counter the cons of it.
Hey people, just wanted to do my part and contribute.
Xtremeguards https://www.xtremeguard.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=droid+dna has the Droid DNA wet apply screen protector on sale for $1.50 (originally $15) with free shipping. Just enter in code "70OFF1" at checkout. I bought 3 of them. Hope this helps someone. I haven't personally had experience with xtremeguards but I've used xoskins, another wet apply option and it worked pretty well.
