So I ran over my OG Evo this morning after it fell out of my jacket pocket while I was getting into my car.
Asurion is sending me a 3D as a replacement and while I'm jazzed about the better performance potential, I'm seeing all kinds of horror about rooting it with the 1.5 hboot.
I'm running Mik 2.61 and was heading to Mik 3 this weekend. So i'm hoping to find a ROM that's got similar performance and battery life. I'm also wondering the best way to not lose all my data (gaming, mms/sms, etc) since I've never had to swap phones like this. My last full backup with TBPro was yesterday afteroon so I'm guessing I'll lose anything after that.
So any help with the swap of data and recommendations on a killer ROM would be welcomed!

Hboot 1.5 isn't all that bad, you just have to read a little to get everything working. There are plenty of tutorials an recommendations that will help you be a flashaholic on 1.5.
In my personal opinion (which means absolutely nothing in the real world), stock on the 3D destroys MikG. In no way am I saying that Mik is bad. In fact, if Mik had a ROM for the 3D, I'd most likely be on it. It's what I was running on the OG as well.
With that said, there are a ton of wonderful ROMs here. Olympus is getting great reviews and it's fairly user friendly. I'm personally running a Nocturnal ROM (that gets no love cause it's basically stock with Zeus mod) that I think its amazing.
Your gonna love the 3D, just root that bad boy and do some testing, your bound to find something you like.
And yes, in terms of the data for your apps, the last backup will have to do. Just don't attempt to restore system backups. That might screw something up.
Thanks - so can I just copy the backup file from my old SD card to the new card, push installs of apps from web to phone including TBPro, then use TBPro to restore app data?
My whole reason for rooting my OG was to get rid of the bloat, then I n00bed and tried to download the GB OTA, bricked, lost root, waited fro Revolutionary to get root back, went from stock to CM7, to Synergy, to Mik...
I guess I'm not fully understanding the 3D still being S-ON and having root ... or am I still n00bing with that comment?? LOL.
They did the same to me mine came with hboot 1.4 and was brand new not refurb. this was about 2 weeks ago cross your fingers!
I lnow how good mik roms are I remeber when I had my incredible but for the evo 3d I would reccomend Olympos titan Hd it the vest on performance and battery life_!

Same thing happened to me man. My Evo fell out of my lap when I was getting out of my car, straight onto the driveway. I was also planning on moving from MikG 2.6 to 3.0, I had it on my sdcard lol. So I waited till Asurion said I was getting a 3D, and I finished the claim.
I was also pretty confused about the rooting with 1.5 hboot like I had but you just have to follow directions to the word.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1239821
That is the guide I used to root mine, but I failed the first time when it came to like step 12 when your Evo will ask you if you want to unlock it. My problem was I didn't have the HTC drivers installed, so make sure you do that. The only limitation with this method is that you can't flash kernels through recovery, because the boot partition is still locked. You have to download and app called flash image GUI (available in the market for 99 cents) and use that to either search a rom zip and extract the kernel info, or just pick a kernel zip by itself. This will apply the kernel, wipe dalvik and cache, and then reboot your device. Do this before you flash the rom you want to run. And make sure you do a nandroid of your stock rom first before anything.
As far as roms go, I recommend Myn's Warm 2.3. Very snappy, looks great, and very stable unlike some other roms I've tried. I used Myn's 2.2 on the OG Evo back before MikG came out. The dev community here isn't as big as the Evo's but there are some great devs here, I'm sure you'll warm up to it quick like I did.

Before I got my first Android I was a dedicated Iphone lover and I swore nothing would beat it until I got my hands on a Nexus 1 which was my first android and it just happened to be rooted and I had no clue what flashing was but when I figured it out ive been a crack flasher ever since.... So what's your story?
Upon a quick glance at the question and then the "high guy" avatar, I thought someone was asking for drugs.
I used to be until CM7 came out for the INC and then I stayed with that. With the TB I was switching between CM7 & BAMF, but i've stuck with BAMF for a couple weeks now.
I used to flash my old WinMo 6.5 Omnia, and when I came over to Droid, it made it that much easier to really go nuts, there was just SO much cool stuff to play with. I'm on a quest for the "perfect" rom. So far, plenty of close calls, but there's always that little something that I want, or that isn't quite right. I'd LOVE LOVE LOVE to teach myself to build ROMS so I don't have to hound these poor devs for mods all the time.
I guess I'm a flashing addict.
Lol, I flash a new ROM practically every day.

Ditto. I actually stuck with a single rom for about 2 months with my Droid X on Liberty 1.5 with the EpicBlue theme. That was a major record for me! I trend to install, on average, probably 5 roms/themes a week on my tbolt.

i used to flash like twice a day on my OG till i discovered MIUI and then i started slowing down, now im much more moderate with flashing, back in the day though without nandroid, i wouldve been lost lol
The thunderbolt is my first android and I rooted and flashed it the day I got it. I flashed it with the perfect storm 1.4. I thought I was going to flash a bunch of other roms. But as it turns out, I haven't found anything in this rom that makes me want to figure out how to make a backup of my current setup. And if i don't have a way to get back to my current setup (all Apps and data), i dont really feel like flashing a different rom.
My gadget hacking days have an origin way before android phones. Started back when I was flashing custom firmwares on my PSP. The reason I got an android phone was for rooting and customization. None of my gadgets usually last more than a day or so before they're hacked some way or another
Definitely have enjoyed flashing on the Thunderbolt...although now pretty much the only time I flash is when Bamf gets updated...
I may or may not have a problem lol
First smartphone I ever had was an HTC Eris. I had never even heard of rooting till a few months after I had gotten it. I had just seen it mentioned somewhere on the internet, and I decided to research it (technology is a passion of mine). I was definitely a crack flasher with my Eris (mainly because tazz updated his ROM every day ) Then I had gotten a Droid 2. Not as bad of a crack flasher with that after liberty came out.
I just got my tbolt 2 weeks ago. I had it rooted within 4 hours of buying it. I am definitely not a crack flashed with it. I still can't decide if I want to keep it stock (or at least plain jane) or if I want a custom ROM. Right now, I'm using das BAMF 2.0 with adrynalynes 2.0 kernel, and it seems promising.

Im a noob to this, but I was having some trouble with Smokin1337's Sick Sense vX.1 rom on my EVO 3D. My trouble was the battery was draining 1% a minute (while using the device) and camera stopped working all of the sudden. I click into either camera or camcorder app or use the camera button shortcut and it just gives a blank (black) screen.
Unfortunately as a noob I cannot post in the Sick Sense thread so I have to refer to Q & A for help. Originally the superuser app I had installed, after installing Sick Sense, did not work properly. It kept force closing so I updated it via the market suggested by another user...forgot his name...too lazy to check...but it was my first post. Now my force closes of superuser have stopped but I still have some more problems.
For one, my phone reboots randomly while using this rom. As mentioned above, the camera does not function anymore. It used to work and now all of the sudden it stopped working and just gives me blank screen. Also, the battery drains quickly while in use literally 1% a minute and I'm not even using 4G. I just browse the web, I don't run any crazy programs that tax the battery or processor.
Originally I was just looking for a Sense Rom that is better than the Stock Sprint Rom. I just wanted a faster rom with no bloat and an excellent battery life seeing as on the commute to my university I take the subway and my phone switches between roaming and no signal. Also, the buildings at my university seem to be cell phone signal resistant. Sprint signal is scarce and data is slow and usually I'm roaming. The same happened with T-Mobile except there was no signal at all. Verizon and AT&T seem to be the kings of signal at my university because they work the best. Anyways, before I continue to ramble on is there any other ROM you guys at XDA would know that would best suit my needs. I've restored from my backup and phone is running good on Stock Sprint Rom for now.
Thanks For Your Time!
P.S. I've looked into some ROMS but seeing that I'm a noob I'm skeptical of nightly releases fearing that my phone would constantly restart or I would brick it. I'm somewhat interested in WTSB Hydro v2.4 but I'll take a Fast Sense ROM, but I don't really want to overclock because I'm not a power user. Currently, my Evo 3D has Hboot 1.5 because it was replacement unit from Asurion for a lost phone so its updated to the latest and greatest (lol we all know that sometimes isn't the best thing...)
Sounds like clean rom is for you.
I agree...clean rom is the absolute best sense rom out their. Sick bat life, and fast as heck. I would also say miui if you like aosp...it has better bat life and is faster without sense, unless you like sense lol...but scott is a wonderful coder.
Thanks for suggesting the clean ROMs. Anybody know if I can turn off camera sound in the rom??? Seeing as I'm a noob with less than 10 posts I can't post in the ROM forum so I have to seek out help in Q & A.
Go with one by virus fast and no problems then once you get hooked you can go to nightlys

Trying to figure out how to install a certain ROM. Don't remember the devs name...something along the lines of theAndroidosX anyways its the Olympus Trinity XE ROM with beats for the EVO 3D.
Since I got HBOOT 1.5 it says follow a certain method to root your phone/flash kernel or ROM. I can't do that method seeing as I already have Revolutionary. Seeing as I have revolutionary do I just follow flashing instructions of the ROM or do I have to use an alternative method because of HBOOT 1.5?
Any help would be appreciated!!!
Steel rom is by far the best and most stable sense rom out there.

Hello All,
I'm home for the holidays, and my Dad asked me to mess with his Evo 3D. I myself have an Epic 4G & am comfortable messing with Android devices.
What I need is some advice on a ROM I can flash to his phone and leave town and not have to worry about. I see him a couple times a year, so I can always mess with it then, but I'd rather not rely on that to help him out.
If anyone could point me in the right direction, that would be swell. I noticed there isn't an official "stable" CM7 ROM released at this time. (http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version#HTC_Evo_3D)
Any advice would be great.
Up to this point, we've tried hard resetting the beast, but it's still acting very funny/buggy.
It's running GB 2.3.4, and I'm not sure if it's software or hardware, but it locks up, goes through fits of phantom clicks, and a few other oddities. Need to try loading a custom ROM to see if those issues disappear.
Thanks for your help!
I would personally go with the Miui ROM for the 3D, I used it on my NS4G and worked amazing. Currently on my 3D I'm running Warm TwoPointThree with no bugs but, I'm a flashaholic and am looking at Miui now or an ICS ROM. With Miui, the updates which come out every Sunday (I think) are easy to do and have complete on screen directions on how to complete
I actually wouldn't suggest MIUI in this case as it doesn't have 4g or any 3d capabilities. Not to mention it does get quirky.
If he doesn't mind a themed rom I would go with Myns warm 2.3 but be sure to grab the rc1 and not a nightly.
If he wants a more stock look I'd go with Fresh...that may be better long term.
I'm Batman..
Fresh rom! Stable and no issues. I have the same thing with my wife. I flash daily and she wants the thing to just work lol.

Yea considering the situation ...I'd go with Fresh as well. He doesn't dev much ..he just releases a solid bug free rom and disappears until it's time to clean up an official HTC update.
Prolly the best bet for your dads phone
I'm Batman..
So, I've been doing some reading. And it looks like this is a little bit more involved than the dev on the Epic. That is fine if it were for my personal phone, but perhaps not for my father's.
HBoot, SOff, Fastboot, etc.
It is my understanding that achieving S-Off will void warranty. I mean, sometimes "rooting" will void warranty, but I've heard mixed reports.
Anyways, is there a quick ROM I can load just to see if it's a software vs hardware issue. I'm beginning to think it may be a digitizer problem.
If your not looking to root load a new rom on it, your best bet would be to take it to Sprint and have them look at it.
Warm fan myself. Everything just plain works in it.

+1. Best bet to be bug free. HTC stock kernel is solid as a rock.
If the phone is not yet rooted the 2.3.4 version achieving S-off is not possible at this time.
Looks like just taking it in will be the best bet. He has Sprint's TEP, or whatever it's called (I use squaretrade myself).
If the phone is mucked up, shouldn't he be able to walk out with a new phone? He said he's gone in before and they made him send it back to the vendor with previous phones. It was my understanding that if you paid for insurance through Sprint, they ignored the vendor warranty b/c you are paying for a separate on through them...maybe he was just getting the runaround.
Thanks for your help thusfar. Who knows, maybe I'll end up with an Evo 3D sometime in the future. You guys have been great (and very prompt =] )
I would go with CleanRom. It's stock based and pretty much just the bloatware removed.
First, make sure u r not using cwm recovery. It gives me phantom touches on every rom. I always like older veraions of infected rom myself. All cm and aosp roms are buggy for someone who didnt install them.

Hehe, yes, I'm just going to have him go the repair root. Walking him through rooting & whatnot with his Evo 3D is not yet as easy as it is with a phone like the Epic.
Root it and put warm ROM on it. Most stable I've tried so far.

I would root it, flash cleanrom2.9.5, then flash a stock kernal, and he would be good to go, as stated above stock kernal is solid, and cleanrom has never givin me issues that I haven't caused myself from messing with stuff.
And as far as rooting goes the mixed review you hear come from the various ways you use to acheieve root based on which bootloader he currently has on the device. Some EVO 3d do have some random bugs, rather it be hardware or software, still a beast of a phone tho
Shot from my sharp shooter in 3d

Is there anything i need to know to minimize the shock of the adjustment? I'm just curious because the TB was epically developed for, rezound seems to be at a much younger place in the regard. Are there any other things i need to keep in mind?
you wont have much of a problem at all i feel... i had a Dinc and once u understand that u need to use amon ra recovery and the difference of using hboot to flash kernels i think u will be fine
So, if I am understanding the situation correctly, The three main things are:
Amon Ra is our recovery,
htc DEV to unlock is necessary (ie, your warranty is void)
Kernel through hboot (for now).
Just came over from a galaxy nexus myself but everything yojoe mentioned covered my initial confusion. The kernel through hboot really threw me off at first as in the past I had only ever used it for radio updates. As for dev scene, I came from an official google phone so I expected less development but as you stated it's really early for this phone anyways. Already though I'm loving the Sense based ICS roms (running cleanrom pro, personally) and Cyanogenmod 9 has made much progress if you are a fan (though no working ril yet).
Well i think everything will pick up for the rezound once the official ICS drops (devs can take it apart to learn how stuff works) and once S-Off is released.
I just left the tbolt for the rezound. The hardest thing to get used to (and its not that hard to get used to) is flashing the kernels. Other than that, this phone slaughters the tbolt.
I started with the evo 4g, which is a great phone. (Has the biggest dev following out of all of the phones i've had, thats the biggest thing I miss about the 4g)..then to the evo 3d, very nice phone, just not as many devs.
Then to the tbolt, very nice phone...but a major step back after having the 3d for awhile.
Now I have the rezound...hands down best phone I've ever had.
1 thing to remember though, from what I have seen you don't want to upgrade to the ICS ruu....I almost did this to run some of the newer roms (the ones without the patch for gb) But I have someone strongly advise me against this due to people having issues with the ruu, then wanting to downgrade back to gb. But you can't downgrade back to gb after upgrading to the ICS leak.
Just do some research and you'll figure it out.
I always wait a week or so after getting a new phone and let it run stock so I can see what it is like before I root it. But thats just me.
I'm actually glad I read this, as I was thinking about flashing the leak, and I hadn't seen that yet. I just flashed nils with the patch, so I don't want to be stuck on the leak if there isn't a way to downgrade yet.
OP, I went from the Tbolt to the bionic and now the rezound. So far I really like the rezound. Although I have only been using it for 2 days now, I do really like it. It seems like the main thing that is a "shock" to learn, so to speak, is the flashing for kernals compared to the Tbolt. But the trade off it ICS, which you couldn't daily on the Tbolt, or the Bionic. The bionic had a working RIL, but since you can't flash kernals there was no hardware acceleration or anything.
The locks on motorola devices is why i chose to stay with HTC. the TB was my first phone, but i think it was an awesome phone, just poorly supported by Verizon. My usb port is coming undone so i got a unused, new in box ReZound on ebay for 200 bucks (lucky auction). Lets just hope it doesn't have any issues hardware wise. Really cant wait to get the chance to run AOKP on this bad boy.
The previous posts sum up the differences well. The hardware on the Rezound is a huge improvement. I flashed the leaked ruu and have had not problems, but most of the ICS roms now have patches so you don't have to.
I'm on the fence here guys and need some either reassurance or confirmation of my fears/concerns.
Let me start by saying i'm borderline pissed off that I pay for a Sprint contract and yet VM is getting ICS possibly far before Sprints EVO 3d...This is a large driving force behind wanting to root.
So anyways here are my concerns..
-It's a VM build...does this cause adverse affects?? Lower priority?? ETC??
-I Roam most of the time and use a custom PRL. Is this possible with the ICS ROMS??
-I want EVERYTHING to work still...I do not want to comprimise things not working for ICS. I'm not including app incompatibility here...more or less saying everything working that would work if we had an official ICS release.
Additional questions..not really concerns..
-Is there any roms currently with Sense 4.0 that are fully functional as This would be nice considering we'll never see it officially.
-Can I get better performance??
Lastly, If I do decide to root where do I start...I see tutorials but they say from hboot such and such etc..however I have no idea what I have on my phone to know what tutorial to use...I just got it 2 months ago, and i've fully OTA updated it. I came from an optimus v to sprint evo 3d...I had my optimus rooted and had custom roms on it.
I say Root, but I always root my phones.
You need to find out what hboot you are on, take back cover off, remove battery, put battery back in, cover back on, then hold power and down volume rocker. You will get to a white screen and it will tell you which hboot you have. Since you say you have OTA updated, you are likely on 1.5.
You should go through the downgrade process to get you on 1.4 which will allow full s-off and be the simplest route for flashing firmware/ROM's.
I have been using the VM ICS leaks since they came out and the Dev's did their
thing on them and I haven't had anything not work. I am using MeanROM ICS and Mike keeps it updated pretty regularly.
Whatever you do, do not install the VM firmware file you may see posted. It is unnecessary and will likely cause issues.
There are no ROM's that have fully working Sense 4.0 + ICS + all other items(3D Wimax).

If you want EVERYTHING to work, do NOT go with an ICS rom at this time.
They are still working on all the bugs. Camera issues. 3D issues.
3D is important to me. That's why I bought this phone. Some videos won't play in 3D, some 3D games won't work in ICS and 3D you tube videos will not work in ICS. (at least that is the last I read).
I'm staying with GB for now until I'm sure all the bugs are worked out and everything works. It may never happen.
I feel the same way. I don't want to compromise anything for ICS.

I do recommend you root. The custom roms beat the snot out of the stock.
As long as you use a Sense based ics Rom, everything works. I take 3d pics and video and just watched a 3d YouTube video just to check.
While they are not yet as refined as the Gb roms, everything works.

Two biggest benefits of rooting regardless of the phone:
1) Full system backups in recovery.
2) The ability to remove all carrier crapware.
Now, there are several other benefits, such as upgrading to more updated ROMs that will eventually not be available for this phone (it will never officially receive Android 5.0 or Sense 4.0).
As for fully functional, I'm running the Booster Shot port with Sense 3.6. Silky smooth and fully functional, including 3D.
If you choose to root, fully read and understand the process so you don't brick your phone. Get your HBOOT versions (mentioned in a previous post in this thread) and root accordingly.
Definitely boost in performance even if you don't go with ICS. I compared my rooted 3d with my roomates 3d and my 3d runs so much faster it seems like it isn't even the same phone.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA
I would recommend root, since you have a lot of options to choose different ROMs.
No Sense 4.0 ROM is working correctly. There are issues with 3d and with call drops, what is more important I think Anyway, most ROMs using Sense 3.6 run ok.
I also have the benefit of having daily contact with my rooted evo vs my girlfriends not rooted evo... Mine phone is way faster at everything.... Even before I went to meanrom ics....
The difference is night vs day...
If you really want to see the performance of your phone, the way it should be most definetly Root it.
I haven't done it myself but I'm 100% positive google will find you a list of benefits from obtaining root...
And btw even tho its a little weird and in beta my favorite thing about ics is google chrome... It's just an awesome phone browser, just what stands out in my mind atm.. ask me tomorrow and ill prolly say something different.

If your on the fence, don't do it. If your going to commit to modding your phone, you have to know 100% what you're up against. For most, that's bricking your phone in a certain way so you can downgrade it. Than getting the hboot down through a tool in a LINUX distro. Than going through ruu than using revolutionary. And lastly flashing a recovery. It's not difficult
As long as you know what you are up against.

My two cents:
Root it.
Backup your stock system, flash an ICS rom. If you don't like it, simply restore back to the original setting. You can still add tweaks and goodies not available to the non-rooted.
The beauty of being rooted is it's yours, totally yours, too make how you want it.
Root, root, root!

exactly...every sense based rom is fully functional with 3d also...this is a one way street to root....root...backup your rom...flash...any chance you don't like you can always return to your previous state...unrooted...since there are no drawbacks except the fact that you have to setup all over again at a new rom, can't see a reason not to....with these guys here after all it's child play to root and to reverse it so no worries...

I think you are correct on Sprint roms, however that's not what I'm reading on GSM roms. I'm constantly reading and paying attention to the bugs people complain about.
When I'm confident that everything works, I will definitely flash a ICS rom.
to add:
OP's original question to root or not to root. That is the question.
I say YES! Root by all means. Because he is on Sprint CDMA network. Lots of good roms there. By all means root and enjoy the phone.
Absolutely!

OP's original question to root or not to root. That is the question.
I say YES! Root by all means. Because he is on Sprint CDMA network. Lots of good roms there. By all means root and enjoy the phone.
Absolutely!

Yeah, I guess you're right. I'm only on sprint roms.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm still debating this though mainly because i'm wondering if there would be benifit to waiting till the official spring ics comes and then letting devs release some roms based on that one instead of the virgin mobile one.
I'm thinking then we could flash the sprint firmware and possibly that updated firmware would be a plus, to performance.
Also...I see that I would likely have to downgrade to Hboot 1.4. Is there a performance/feature hit in doing so?
I guess its not really a question of if I do it anymore but when...before or after official sprint ics OTA.

No performance hit as far as I can tell. With the custom roms, my performance has vastly improved.

Ok, so I just checked and I'm on hboot 1.5. Fully stock, fully updated as stated. Can someone point me to the threads and steps I need to take to do this?
Edit: I'm only asking for verification on steps/threads to use as I do not want to mess up and use an outdated tutorial or something and f up my phone. I just want to take every precaution to ensure I do not end up with a brick, and I follow the exact steps Needed for my situation. Not trying to make anyone angry that I'm asking for something I could search for...I just trust you guys to point me to where i need to be more than i do myself searching the correct tutorial for my situation.
Also when on the optimus v i used clockwork mod recovery...I'm assuming this isn't the recovery to use for this phone? And also this five minute wait to edit my post is frustrationg >< lol.
All you need to do is go into the development threads and read. I'm 59 years old for Christ sake, and figured out how to root my phone by reading the first few "stickied" posts. Took all of 15 minutes to get hboot 1.5 removed and hboot 1.4 with s-off installed.

Well yeah, Not to flame you but the amount of time you've been thinking about doing it and getting advise if you should or not, I would think you'd be doing some reading on how to do it.
If you get stuck, there's plenty of people to help you out.
Just make sure you know enough first so you are confident in doing it.
