Browser comparisons? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

On my N1, I've been happily using Miren browser for about a year now. So far, there is not a single browser that really is impressive on honeycomb - am I missing something?
Opera
pros - seems fastest so far (on most pages), quick scroll option, find on page works
cons - can't play flash?!, really struggles with blogspot in particular, but other random sites as well
Stock
pros - everything works
cons - it just works slowly
Firefox -
pros - the layout is wonderful, find on page works
cons - no quick scroll/bottom of page option, no flash?!, poor resolution(?)
Dolphin Browser
pros - nice layout, fast (close to opera), works on every site I use
cons - no fast scroll or find on page, gestures for side menus very sensitive, no navigation/tabs bar when you scroll down without pressing menu
Does this sum up everyone else's experience? Unfortunately, I have to use multiple browsers, depending on the websites I intend to go to. Dolphin is the closest to being the best for me, but I read blogs with extremely long comment pages making it absolutely non usable. For work, our website has a flash component taking Opera out as an every use player (and Firefox). Stock browser is significantly slower in my real world anecdotal evidence, so I really don't like it.
I've used Boat browser on my phone, but didn't really like it. Maybe I'll give that another go tonight.

I'm also looking for the best browser. Tried dolphin hd, Firefox, stock. My issue is that the flex t9 keyboard doesn't allow swype mode on nearly all browser url/ search bars. Don't know what the deal with that is. Firefox allows it, however.
Would like to see more feedback on this thread to help point me in the right direction.

Just tried opera mobile. This might be a keeper. Allows swype keyboard on url and search bar. Fast page loading. Good looking interface.

Wow i'm glad you started this thread.I'm going to pick up mine tomorrow & for me browser performance is crucial to me.Has anyone tried Dolphin for Pad yet?
Also i have this posted everywhere but what will ICS do for the browser?I've seen the Tegra 3 videos on youtube where page rendering on Tegra 3 vs Tegra 2 was no competition at all.The pages were loading lightning fast.Is this what ICS brings? Is this the reason ASUS wanted the tablet to ship with ICS?

Have you tried Miren? I use it on my phone and I like it a lot.

Just FYI, the "find on page" option is in the extended menu under MENU > MORE. I really think they should make it more accessible. As for "Dolphin for pad" its still in beta and doesn't have all the features of DolphinHD, so I don't find it as useful.

I haven't hear of that one. I'll have to try it out. I also tried Opera Mobile on my N1, but I didn't like the bar at the bottom always taking up so much real estate.

Anyone tried maxthon browser? Not sure if it works on HC, but its a nice browser.

I have used xscope in the past, but that was not on a tablet. I can't believe how nice the tablet is though. I also have not had any problems with wifi or anything else people had mentioned.

Someone should test xscope It's what I use on my revo and I'm curious how it runs on a tablet

opera browser is the best. who said it doesnt play flash? opera mini doesnt but opera mobile does. dolphinhd would be next in line. those the only two i need.

So far I like Opera best, but the flash issues are a real problem. Also wish it handled tabs like Dolphin.

It has issues with embedded YouTube videos on forum pages for one thing. Video is just black while sound plays.

i was hoping the stock was gonna be good enough since my acer a100 stock browser is pretty smooth. I feel like im using gtab with the browser. Even the Lenovo ideapad K1 was smoother than this. I'll have to try dolphin then.

I have heard that the stock one on ics will be much better, but isn't flash going to be unavailable in the ics browser?

Flash has already updated to support ICS.
In relation to Opera and Flash - it works perfectly on my Galaxy SII and Galaxy Note. Struggle to see why it wouldn't on the Prime. I presume you're on the latest version of the Flash Player? Perhaps try an older one if not, it may be that the ICS update broke some stuff elsewhere...

So far I have only used the stock browser and opera mobile. I like opera but I have yet to try it on Flash sites.
I am using the Google keyboard instead of the Asus keyboard and I can type a lot faster.
on edit: I just tested Flash on opera mobile and it worked like a charm.

Re: Opera not playing flash. Try going to southpark and playing an episode. Or go to watchseries.eu and follow any of their links to videozer, videobb, etc. I can click on flash, but then its just a black screen. Sometimes sounds starts to work, but mostly not. Its the same with my work site. Its a known problem that a quick google will show you.
New browser trials:
Dolphin
I found I can do bottom of page, switch tabs, access the search bar, etc. through gestures. Definitely not ideal, but makes it at least a passable single solution browser.
Boat Browser
pros - really fast, everything works
cons - no bottom of page/fast scroll, not a huge personal fan of bottom of the screen tool bars
Maxthon Pad (not the tampon...)
pros - fast, everything works
cons - no bottom of page/fast scroll, not a huge personal fan of bottom of the screen tool bars
Sleipner Mobile
pros - gesture use without having to select something to do gestures
cons - gesture use without having to select something to do gestures. My experience, they need to have a specific screen area where gestures work, otherwise you accidentally go forward, backward, switch tabs, etc. way too often
Miren browser doesn't work on honeycomb I'm guessing, because it doesn't show up in search results for it.

[Q] GTab with Vegan best browser?

Is there a better browser for the Vegan 5.1 release? The Facebook website in particular has a problem with the bottom-docked chat bar scroll up the screen and getting in the way of games and posts.
Thanks!
Jim
I have seen the problem your talking about on Facebook. I haven't used any other browsers on it besides the default, an old version of fennec and the crashy veiwsonic one. When I get back home ill check out how fennec does on Facebook. I know dolphins a popular browser but I've never tried it. Does anyone know how it does on the gtab?
Decided to use my precious limited data on my Htc Aria, Xda app
I've been really happy with Dolphin HD on Vegan 5.1. The up and down gesture controls are pretty helpful.
There is also skyfire and xscope
Okay, I installed Dolphin on my Gtablet. It seems like a nice browser and a little more adapt for tablets than the regular android browser in froyo. It still dosnt seem to be better with the facebook chat bar. To tell you the truth I wasnt expecting the bar to work at all in any browser in android when i fist got my gtab. Im hoping for better browsers soon. If you take a look at the demo of the moto Xoom, It looks like they might have put chrome in honeycomb, if so it would be much better than any browser for android right now.
They are all sorta lacking
Skyfire has a nice feature in being able to easily switch between mobile and desktop rendering of a web page. I find their little toolbar at the bottom of the screen that lets you integrate with Facebook to be annoying and there's no way to turn it off. The tabbed browsing isn't very friendly. You have to access it from a button on the control bar which opens another screen to select the tab. I never did figure out how to close a tab. It is pretty speedy. It's the only one I tested that isn't compatible with my Netvibes homepage--I don't know why, so I don't know what other sites might trip it up.
For me, Xscope was noticeably slower than the others in rendering pages. It's tabbed browsing works well, more like a computer browser's would. This one seemed to be the best at keeping flash-based items framed where they are supposed to be in relation to the rest of the webpage. (The facebook chat bar still rides up on this one...it rides up on all of them.) I don't like the fact that you cannot save webpages/bookmarks as shortcuts on the device's desktop with this browser.
No reason to talk about Opera Mobile.
I am using Dolphin. The tabs are best of the bunch. Swipe right and the bookmarks show. You can save bookmarks as shortcuts on the desktop. It's not quite as fast as Skyfire, but faster than Xscope. It does get to acting flaky sometimes--like trying to enter a term into the search field on the XDA site here. I've had it shut down a few times. To me, this ones features and usability set it apart from the others.
I mainly use Dolphin HD but have also installed Dolphin Mini and I really like it on the Gtab.
There's also a newer browser named Miren Browser. Check the market for it. It supports full flash and has tab browsing. Pretty neat.
Scott
Miren and Dolphin HD are my "go to" browsers on this.
Miren just "looks" nicer for some reason then Dolphin HD. I tend to use Miren more for aesthetic purposes.
Either browser sometimes gives me download errors when I try to download. Once in a while (more often then not) I get the following error when trying to download: "Can't download as file size is unknown" and then it just quits.
Any one have any ideas how to fix that?
I'm also for Dolphin HD. Lately it's been FC-ing on me, but I'm not blaming Dolphin itself (I'll be repartitioning today).
Dolphin Mini, seems to be geared more towards the g-tab. I've tried several of the others and mini works best for me.
I just put vegan on my gtab but many of the applications wont show up on the market and when i find them via browser it says they are not compatable with my device ie launcher pro and any of the dolphin browsers. I love HD on my droidx and would love to have in on my gtab aswell

take a look at firefox. Was using Dolphin, but this is much faster.
I have been using dolphin browser hd. It has been working well on my g-tab
Swyped from my St0n3d VEGAn 1.0 Beta 5.1.1 G-Tab
On the G-Tab I have tried most of the browsers.
Dolphin HD is my favorite so far. I am really looking forward to their public beta of the tablet optimized version.
Skyfire is fast, but I HATE that bottom bar.
Firefox 4 is out for Android, but the website graphics are bad compared to others. Some type of optimizing I am guessing. Despite that it is still slow.
I need to try Miren. I have not had a chance yet.
Being a tablet as opposed to a phone I would love for them to just release full Chrome on it.
Dolphin HD has some nice features, but it seems to present a condensed version of my favorite daily newspapers. I've tried typing in the full url, but it changes it and won't seem to present the normal view, that the stock Vegan browser presents. (An example, AZcentral.com.) Anyone know of a fix. Meantime I will try Miren. Can't get firefox to download to my Viewsonic, as Google does not recognize it as a android device. (I heard that going back to stock rom will fix that??)

That's probably on the newspaper's web site, reacting to the fact that it is a mobile browser. Go in to the Dolphin settings and change the user agent to Desktop, and see if that helps.

Stock browser vs Maxthon

Hey,
So.. I just recently got my hands on the prime and was trying out different browsers.
I've just found out that Maxthon created a tablet version browser and was fairly impressed with it however, I'm experiencing issues with sites that plays videos, e.g. desktop youtube site, it causes issues when you try to fullscreen the video and the connection of the browser just completely cuts off.
Either than that, everything works great and beautifully to I must say. A definite much more attractive and in someways, faster UI and browser in my opinion.
What are your opinions? and if your experiencing the same issue as me, are there any fix available to get around this issue?
Cheers!

I used the maxthon and found it quite useful at first. Its smoother than the stock browser. I have not try the youtube on maxthon yet about the fullscreen but when i tried to select text on a web page it will force close itself. Other than that maxthon has been pretty good for me.
I've tried just about every browser Android has to offer to find the best and I'm just spoiled from using Firefox on Windows 7 everyday, nothing Android has can touch it.
After trying everything I think I'm going with Maxthon, just wish they had more add-ons. Really want something like Ad-block Plus.
my browser of choice is opera mobile. but I do have Maxon. also. I do have to admit its the best looking out of all the browsers. its hard to describe but everything is rendered so well on it. Damn, can't describe it in words but its a real beautiful looking browser. All sites look so good on it. its a good browser. it has alot of potential. Still not a true tablet version though because it still has resoulution capability checkbox on the bottom. its more of an in-between version. still looks great. makes me wanna switch to it now...Brb..lol
Thanks for the great feedback guys.
In my opinion, for general browsing, Maxthon is probably one of the best as one of you had say, it really is smooth and everything is just rendered so well!
However, due to the common sites that I browse.. e.g. facebook for instance, when on the desktop site with Maxthon, and you're trying to view pictures, when the photo pops up infront of the news feed, it cancels the capability to scroll up and down to view the comments, instead it scrolls up and down the background which is the news feed.
And another disappointment is still the full screen capability of videos.
But either than, really happy with it.
However, I tried doing a comparison with sites and loading time, and trying to quickly clicking from one link to another with the stock and maxthon, both seemed almost equally matched.
the stock browser on the ICS of the prime does work really great but... it may be the look of the Maxthon that has won me over. But I still switch from one browser to another depending on my purpose.
Personally I'm a huge fan of Dolphin Browser HD. I use it on my Skyrocket and downloaded it last night on my Prime. So far so good!

I use to play with other browsers but since ICS came out it has been the smoothest browser of them all, uninstalled all the others.
After ICS I uninstalled all other browsers. Stock one is great.
I really like stock browser too, I just wish there was a way to keep it in desktop mode by default. That's the only thing that really bothers me about the stock browser.
That's the reason I'm using ICS Browser+. Its the same browser as the stock one but with the added bonus of selecting a user agent so it can remain in desktop mode along with some other goodies.
I really suggest it to anyone who likes the stock browser but wants a little more out of it. As a plus the developer is a part of this forum and is open to suggestions on new features.

Official Browser thread...

Can someone make this a sticky?
Since I've used my tablet, the one program/app I've kept switching and going back and forth has been the browser. Some do things well, while others do things just ok. I'd like to create this thread to list all browsers that work with the Transformer Prime tablet and list their strengths and weakness. This of course will be a "live" list and hopefully keep growing and be a good resource for lots of people. I just thought it would help. Since I'm no expert at all, I could at least start off with listing some of the browsers I use. Also, if this isn't even needed, let me know. No big deal.

I've been using Stock, Opera, and Dolphin HD, and so far I think I like Dolphin HD...
Dolphin HD just seems faster... could be mind tricks, but it does seem to load faster.
Opera, it's fast but I'm not used to the UI and don't really like it.
I love the stock "look" and the favorites button in the top right corner. If only I could combine Dolphin HD and the stock browser
*Edit*
Hmmm, guess it was false news? Can't seem to get it to work anymore atm... Crap.
Ive used Stock, Dolphin HD, Opera, and Boat Browser. I can say with full confidence that the Boat Browswer has been the best browsing experience. I've used this for 3 days now zero fc or locks and smoother/faster than any other ones ive tried and has full flash support.
Damn... I just updated opera and flash still isnt working for me. I'm using dolpin untill i can get flash to work with opera. Never tried boat. Might look into it.

Yeah it says in change log log of opera that flash has issues with ICS 4.0.3. This new update took a step backwards as flash is not even in settings anymore. Of you go to a site that has flash, it'll say you need to install flash n enable Java.

Yeah, noticed the lack of flash settings as well...
But I think that when I go to youtube.com, click a flash video it opens in the youtube app but when I press back it goes back to opera and does play the video in the browser... Must check if I can reproduce it.
Amazing though that the opera team still hasn't got this working yet, insane actually.
I've tried stock, xscope and after that I was worried that I wouldn't be able to do the type of browsing I do on my laptop (speed wise)
Then I tried dolphin HD. It has a 'desktop / tablet mode ' that optimizes it for tablet size and unlocks more functionality.
Overall it looks nice and has good features it, but I promise you the only reason I use it is because it simply loads all my pages faster -never cannot view a page (which I would get random pages show as unavailable with stock despite knowing for a fact they work on other browsers) . Also It does not lock up nearly as much as stock did with the old wait or force close window (which upon hitting wait lead to complete functionality again dope)
Finding it hard to figure out a way to update the original post. I would love others to be able to input their own information, which makes it a real "live" document. Like sharepoint folks.
That's why I chose to use Google Docs, lol

Guys, I have a problem. I've been messing around in Titanium Backup deleting bloat and I accidentally uninstalled the stock browser. I made backup, of course, but when I tried restoring it, it just went on working forever.
I've tried restarting the tablet, I've even done a factory reset but it didn't help. The browser is missing from my app drawer and the bookmarks widgets are not working.
I've checked the system/app folder with Root Explorer. The file named com.android.browser.apk is still there but there is no .odex file. Should there be one? I tried reinstalling the app from this apk but it doesn't work.
Any ideas what else I can try? Also, I'll be extremely grateful if someone can provide any browser related apk and odex files.
EDIT: I've solved it. I've got the deodexed Browser.apk from this thread, placed it in the system/app folder and restarted. It works now.
BTW, the ICS Browser+ does not work without the stock browser.
That belongs in it's own thread or broadcast in an IRC channel, you could also just use ICS Browser+.

Can't go wrong with boat IMO. Have been an opera user on my phones for a long time. Having never heard of boat browser I gave it a go on my prime and found it blows every other android browser out of the water. I enabled the desktop user agent and since have not even felt the need to try any other browser. In fact, boat is now on my phone also, its that good. Also looks much better than opera which I always thought was ugly but couldn't give it up due to its superior smoothness.
Anyways, until a real chrome browser is available for android (still dumbfounded it isn't, ffs Google!) I don't see myself replacing boat.

[Q] browser recommendations

What browsers are you all using? Why do you like it. I was using stock for a while, and recently switched to opera, but i am finding it quirky and a little flaky.
Depends on what your needs are. If you want a quick, touch based interface, stick with Opera. The UI just got updated and it's a lot easier. It can also download through filehosts. Otherwise, if you're using an external mouse, try chrome beta or maxthon. They have small, hard to touch buttons, but the mouse makes it feel more natural. Chrome is still in beta though and it crashes rarely.
I don't like, on opera, how often when I click on the page, it zooms. I also had several posts that I did on facebook that showed up there, but when I used another browser they were not there. There are some other issues that don't come to mind now.

What UI elements did they change in Opera? I keep wanting to switch, but I utterly can't stand not having visible tabs on top.
Additionally, the stock browser and ICS+ have spoiled me beyond return with site specific desktop agent mode. I think that is my most critical feature at this point.
I really like Boat Browser. Very fast, simple but very configurable interface and options, stable, and supports Flash.

Extremely minor, if you click on an X, it will close instead of having to click it twice.
Try Chrome beta!

I like chrome but no flash support. Granted I don't need flash all that much so it it generally fine to use even with fingers. I don't know why someone said it has small buttons. If I need flash I just use the stock browser. I don't know why everyone insists on NOT using it. I like chrome because I can access my desktop bookmarks and that pretty much the only reason.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I've been using Boat browser, since it didn't crash that much, but have been lately switching back to ICS+ since I like the quick controls.
I've been using Boat Browser most of the time since it supports Flash, desktop mode works for most sites and I can easily adjust the fonts for my dang old eyes.
ICS Browser +
Only browser not to force close on me yet. Absolutely love it. Shame i cant use it on my phone which has gingerbread.
Maxthon Browser
I've been happy with Maxthon. Never heard of it until I ran across it in the app store. Redraws are very fast, autosizes to wide pages, has gestures, etc. Very few add-ons, but seems to do the job. I have version 1.5
Another vote for Boat, and I think I've tried all of them.
But the best is doing a remote desktop and using Firefox on Windows.
Since .13 update i am using stock browser. It is far more stable and pretty fine. I have chrome, Firefox, opera and dolphin inhaled. The second preferred is dolphin.
Had some keyboard issues with Chrome Beta, so sticking with the stock browser: seems stable.
Prefer the Chrome bookmarking though.
FG
Opera mobile used to be good but now it crashes all the time.I suggest Boat browser & Dolphin HD.
I kinda swap between Opera and Chrome although i will probably go straight to Chrome as soon as it's out of beta cause it's hella fast at the moment and will probably just get faster. The only thing I don't get is why they didn't release it earlier.
I use Opera if I want to 'chrome-to-phone' and download something, otherwise I use Chrome for everything else.

Which browser do you use?

Just curious to see what browsers people are using on their Manta. Do you go for fast and stable browsers or ones that are feature rich?
I use UC Browser for Tablets myself I feel it has a good balance of speed and features.
I used chrome for a while but then I stitched to aosp browser and its a lot better. Faster smoother and it shows downloads whole chrome sometimes didn't.

Delete the file mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser_preferences.xml
You won't lose any features, and you also won't be able to turn off flash... You could just rename the file to .xml1 or something so it can't read it

I use Firefox beta. Fast, reliable, synced with my desktop and my nexus 4 and, of course, with flash support
Boat Browser (paid version). I'm using it for ages on my Galaxy Note and now I'm using it on the Nexus 10 as well.
I'd like to switch to Firefox, but it is heavily lagging when scrolling slightly complex webpages (e. g. www.spiegel.de). So I'll wait for this to be fixed.

Xscope. But the only good thing about it is that I can swipe to go back and forth. It can do flash as well and rendering is not bad
i use aosp browser but i think and i use to lightning browser is faster
I am still not decided which browser to use on N10. I like bookmarks sync of Chrome but I do not like that it is not hiding tabs and address bar so it has not so much space to show web page contents. I like the way of automatic hiding of address bar of Boat browser but it does not work in full screen mode for some reason. On top of that there is no sync with Chrome bookmars. And last that I was trying is Dolphin with Jetpack. It can hide notification bar on top, it can somehow show and hide tab and address bar infull screen mode but it it not as userfriendly as Boat. It can also somehow sync with Chrome bookmarks. At the moment I tend to use Dolphin but still not fully satisfied with interface in fullscreen.
These are features that good browser should have in my opinion:
* two-way sync with chrome bookmarks
* possibility to hide top notification bar to optimize screen usage (fullscreen) - ideally also bottom bar
* easy usage of tab and address bar in full screen - some automatic showing/hiding as Boat can do in normal mode
* reasonable speed
I am affraid there is no browser with all those features
Oh, also Boat has Google Cloud Print add on FTW

Use Chrome Beta. It has a very smooth implementation of this feature as of about a week ago - you can't actually find it on the Play Store search, though. You have to use a link; there's one here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chrome.beta&hl=en
Also, I find Dolphin is the smoothest scrolling and panning of them all - also one of the fastest to load. But does anyone else find it inconsistent? I was using it on my Galaxy Nexus today, and the auto-fullscreen was glitching out when I panned horizontally. The page caching seems a bit odd, SOMETIMES clearing all my tabs and sometimes not (not like Chrome closes almost all of them - sometimes they save for a while sometimes not). Its a solid performer when it DOES perform, the best. But Chrome Beta, even though its a bit slower and doesn't scroll or pan NEARLY as fast, is quite consistent overall.
You just nailed it on why I finally stopped using Dolphin. That, and... Chrome BOokmark sync. My phone, laptop, desktop, tablet, work laptop, and work desktop (yes, I utilize all of the above :S) all have Chrome with my bookmarks on them. I use Chrome on all my devices now.
Also, Dolphin does weird things with Lotus Notes at work and I can't access it, even in Dolphin Mini
I use Chrome simply because being able to sync across many devices is awesome that alone is worth dealing with the crashing and other problems.
My biggest pet peeve.... despite so many people requesting it Google continues to remain thick headed about allowing us to enable Desktop Website by DEFAULT.
I hate having to check that box every time I open a new tab or click a link on one page that opens another window with the mobile version.

Thanks for your information. I have installed it but I haven't found any way to enable fullscreen. I was googling it and I have only found that this feature is for phones only. How did you activate it for tablet?
Dolphin is great but I since Swype doesn't want to auto space in URLs I had to switch away from it. Haven't really tried boat yet.
+1 for Dolphin. Love swiping the left to get bookmarks and right to get full screen. Great browser!
