[Q] Loss of 3G becoming more frequent - Motorola Photon 4G

About once a week I lose my 3G data connection, but it's starting to happen more frequently; twice today. Sometimes toggling airplane mode will "wake up" the 3G and sometimes not. Usually, I just reboot the phone. Any idea why this might be happening and how to stop it? Thanks!

Are you running juice defender? Did you adjust any settings under "battery and data". The photon has a feature that will kill 3G when the phone is sleeping it really helps with battery life. To keep 3G at all times make sure your device is set to "performance mode". (This is only if you've messed with it. Last suggestion, go to "wireless & networks" then mobile networks, and network mode set to AUTOMATIC.

you get the unable to register mobile ip error? as ive been getting that for a good bit thee past few weeks

I've gotten that when the stupid towers go down in my area a few times but I'm able to call/text.

Nope, don't have Juice Defender installed, and mobile networks is set to Automatic. I'll try the performance mode and see if that fixes the issue.
Thanks for your help!

Give it some coffee to keep it awake And shabby, my friend was getting the "unable to register mobile IP" error right out of the box when he got his photon... he ended up returning it. He got another photon and it did the same thing, so he got an iPhone 4S and it apparently doesn't happen anymore. Idk what the issue could be.

Sprint told me it had something to do with how the last phone we owned was programmed or something stupid like that. My photon did that out the box so we had to manually program my sprint pcs username, password, and a few other numbers inside another phone then jump back to the mopho.

WiFi Problem?

So I just picked up a Thunderbolt from a local Verizon corporate store. The sales rep told me NOT to use WiFi on my phone because of an issue all Thunderbolts are having. She said once connected to WiFi, it won't be able to switch back to 3G unless you perform a factory reset. It sounds like a load of crappy to me, but I'd rather play it safe. Can anyone confirm or deny this out there? Thanks in advance!

I think I've read about a few people having that issue, but simply switching airplane mode on and off fixes it, I believe.
Pretty sure that rep didn't know what the hell she was talking about. I think it's a safe bet these and other boards would be blowing up if there was a problem as massive as that affecting ALL Thunderbolts.
And my wifi is fine!
yea mine doesnt want to switch back to 3g but a simple restart does the trick, and some vzw reps are idiots deff no factory reset
I use wifi all the time, no problems here.
I use WiFi at home and 3G when i'm at work, i have no problem switching between the two, the sales rep that you were talking to doesn't know what he was talking about

Same here no problems switching from wifi to 3G or to 4G
I've heard people complain about this, but the solution for now seems to be turning airplane mode on and back off. From what I've seen it's not a super common problem, I've never had an issue.
Yup, no problems here.

Sometimes my wifi stops working even when its been on all day. It shows its connected and I have a strong signal, but when I try to use an app that needs a connection the app wont connect. The only thing that fixes it is turning wifi off and back on again. On top of that I noticed huge drains on my battery when this happens.

same thing happens to me. then if I turn off my Wi-Fi sometimes to try and get a 3g connection it takes like 10-15 tries to get a data connection. And even sometimes when that happens I'll turn my Wi-Fi back on and my Wi-Fi acts buggy, doesn't connect... I'll have to try the airplane mode trick
I have the same problem. Changing the EPST setting as found from an Engadget Post:

Sort of fixed the problem. However, I rooted to Tesla Coil and now cannot use the "##778#" easter egg dialer anymore.
Just tried the Airplane mode and phone rebooted, doh. Again, after starting up WiFi, no 3G coverage.

No problems here. I use wifi 90% of the day. Although, strangly my router now shuts off its wifi signal ever since I bought this phone. I have to go into my router and setup the network again.

Evo 3D just stopped connecting to "Mobile Network."

Just sitting here at work, and I noticed my battery was unusually low for my usage today... when I noticed that my 3G icon was missing. I thought that was weird, because less than an hour ago, I had it for sure. I was getting email updates for work on a regular basis.
When I checked my quick settings, my mobile network just kept saying "Turning On," and would sometimes flash between that and 'ON' but never actually brought up a 3G, (or any data icon for that matter.) Texts are still getting through, but are about 2-3 minutes behind Google Voice popups on my laptop.
Has anyone else seen this before? I have rebooted, and tried Airplane mode, and disabling/renabling all the radios individually, and nothing has worked... Guess I should yank the battery now. Really bizarre. I usually get pretty good 3G service over here.
If it continues, exchange it.

Mine did the exact same thing this afternoon in Lubbock Tx. I rebooted, turned off and on and data always showed turning on but never connected. For some reason I ended up in the Sprint Zone and it then connected. It went into spring zone as I tried to connect to *2.
Don't have a good explanation of why it started working but try going to the spring zone and check data on.
The same exact thing happened to me too on my 3d today.

Did you do the "speedup 3D" trick that was posted where you removed the proxies after typing in your MSL password? If so, undo it, because that's your problem.
I haven't messed with any settings. I pondered it, but I haven't received my MSL code yet.
I did just find out that my coworker lost his 3G on his Epic. I think this is a Sprint issue, and not any of the devices... Scary though.
Austin, TX here.
im experiencing the same issue right now here in north austin, tx. im getting basic phone services but no network (market/FB/web/etc.)
and no I did not use the speed up internet fix.

well seeing how there are 3 texas people here experiencing this issue it might just be issue with sprint
Maybe they are upgrading the equipment of the "node".
I will be calling sprint on break in 10 minutes to find out
Well I just came back from BestBuy and picked up the 3D here in Michigan. Everyone in mobile just about had Sprint and no one could connect to 3g. My Evo 4g had a very limited connection. As soon as I got the 3D, it couldn't update the weather. So it is definitely something going on with Sprint right now and not your phone.
Just came back for me... Ben White / I-35 area. That was weird.
Are you sure your power saver settings aren't disabling your data connection due to your phone being below the % you set it at?
I don't think it's a 3d problem. I've had trouble connecting to 3g here and there with my og evo about 2 weeks before the 3d came out. I seriously think sprint has some serious network problems.
Man what is going on with Sprint? It's been happening a bit today as well.
I installed golflogix and it gave me an error message and forced closed the program and also put the 3d into airport mode.
However, golflogix will work on 4g.
There seems to be some problems with the sprint network or the 3d.
I had this same issue over the weekend. Rebooting the phone never worked so I did a factory reset and havent had the problem since. but it does make me a little apprehensive.
Perhaps the network is experiencing outages as they roll out an upgrade to their data network to proactively detect unauthorized tethering activity so that when HTC imminently unlocks the Evo 3D, they can charge backdoor tetherers appropriately.

[Q] Mobile Data Drop - Not Suspect To Outage

In the past two weeks, my mobile data has been down. I don't believe it to be an outage in my area due to the duration of the problem, and the inconsistency with other Verizon Wireless phones. I was running Juice Defender for a while, and every now and then I would notice that the Mobile Network would drop. Toggling the Mobile Network would not fix the problem, either. I usually cleaned out my cached data for the Juice Defender app, turned the app off, then toggled airplane mode once. (Sometimes just toggling Airplane Mode wouldn't fix it, therefore I had to clear the cache for the app.) Now this fails to work. I cannot get my mobile network to connect by any conventional means. When I receive MMS messages, my network will connect long enough to download the attachment. Also when I do a search for a Software Update, it connects just long enough to tell me there aren't any updates for my phone. I've tried updating my PRL with *228 and I've even tried *18 from a post over at Droid Forums. Neither work. I've removed the battery and SIM Card as suggested in some other threads here at XDA. I've also removed the Juice Defender app.
The phone is not rooted and has never been rooted with the Temp Root methods. I'm not opposed to rooting, but if I root, I'm gonna perm root and I would rather not have to factory reset my phone if I don't have to right now. I'm mainly posting this because I cannot find anyone online with the same issue that I am having. Any help would be appreciated. Personally, I think its an issue with Dalvik-VM. I can attach a copy of my LogCat if needed. Any ideas on my issue? Thanks in advance!
Check your power settings, if you are in economy mode it will mess with your data connection.
I have a paid version of JuiceDefender, it has caused me so many problems I don't even bother to install it anymore.
~John
I also have the same issue, tried a couple basebands and could not fix it. I ended up not using it...
Every once in a while my mobile network or just lte somehow gets turned off and I have to turn it back on, but that's rare.
I tried juIce Defender and also had problems losing my connection so I uninstalled it. Plus the settings were so confusing to me. I'm using Green Power now and that seems fine.
You didn't mention mhs so I assume you're not using it but that has known connection issues.

Juice Defender gave me fits, too. I'm not using my phone as a Mobile Hotspot, either.
I kinda think its my ROM. I'll play around with some stuff, or I'll just get around to doing a factory reset and see if that fixes the problem. I'll post any solutions here for others.
Are you in a good 4g area? If you scroll down the general section here, you will find my topic. If you use 3g more than 4g, there is a post in that thread about##778#. It helped me. Sorry if it doesn't help you, Cheers.

I just wanted to let you know that I'm having this problem as well. I AM rooted and running CleanRom, but my daughter has a non rooted Bionic, and both of us suffered a complete loss of data today. My husband's rooted Rezound is fine.
I took my phone into Verizon today, and after initially just trying to swap out the phone (which I wouldn't allow them to do, it took me too long to get my phone the way I want it), they finally switched out the 4G sim card, and the data came back instantly.
When my daughter leaves school today, she will get her 4G card swapped out as well, and we'll see if it is in fact a network connectivity problem.
It seems to me that our 4G phones has a lot of trouble switching from wifi to 3G/4G service.

I will +1 this. My work WiFi is spotty, and so the phone falls in and out of WiFi. The Rezound HATES that and usually leaves me with no connectivity. There is definitely a WiFi->Mobile Network issue.
Try doing a factory reset. Could be a bad device... Im getting amazing reception on mine. I havent even seen my 3G or 1x icons yet. Constant 4G lock.
Forget what I said, my data connection has been dropped again for the past thirty minutes and there's no way for me to get it back.
I'm going to try a factory reset. I *really* don't want to have to send my phone back because my husband is getting amazing coverage on his Rezound. However, we're still in the first week of our Verizon contract, and if this looks like it will be a standing issue, then we'll have to cancel and go crawling back to horrible Sprint.

I think I'm going to try doing this. How painful was it for you to convince them to give you another SIM Card?
Edit: Just read your last post. Please let me know what a factory reset does for you.
They had no issues at all swapping out my 4G card, they certainly couldn't let me walk out of the store with no signal. They knew they had to try something.
The factory reset on the phone appeared to work. I've been steadily switching it from wifi to data, and the data signal picks up, albeit a tad bit slow. Only thing is, I still don't really get 4g, while my husband's Rezound has a great signal.
I got insurance on the phone, so I'll put up with it as long as I can before I start screaming at Verizon.
Good to hear. I'm going to try to switch out my SIM card today and see if that fixes it. I thought maybe it was something with the ROM, seeing as how my 3G will turn on whenever I need to send an MMS message, so a factory reset made sense to me. I just don't want to do it. Lol. Thanks for the info!
I've experienced it twice in the last 24hrs and it just happened to be right after I installed and used LTE OnOff. Don't know if there might be a connection there. I keep forgetting this phone has the ability to switch 4g/3G unlike the TBolt. Needless to say, that app is no longer on the phone.
KORM via the beast known as the Rezound.
I had an issue with the mobile network just dropping in and out (other people in the room did not lose signal). We currently don't have 4G and it is 3G only. I did a factory reset of the phone, but it continued to occur. Took the phone back to Verizon store to exchange it (it was 1 week old). At first they weren't going to and gave me a run around but in the end exchanged it. Have had no problems with new phone.
My girlfriend's Bionic keeps dropping 4G more frequently than my Rezound. I get this problem too though. Usually a toggle of Airplane Mode fixes it...but it's pretty damn annoying. Happens once or twice a day!
A Factory Reset fixed it. Everything went smoothly, too. I backed up all my SMS Messages with HTC's Messaging app, and got my network back as soon as I restored it and set everything back up. Hopefully this will help anyone else who might have had the same problem.
I've been side by side with a fresh Rezound and watched both of them jump from 4g to 1x to 3g and sometimes never 3g. The problems were a million times worse with my droid charge as it's a combination of the handsets and the towers.

Hmmm
I have this happen if I am in an area with NO signal (such as the basement level of my office building) for long time. Only a reboot will bring back data. Does not happen often (maybe 2ce in a month and a half).
I am intrigued by the person who blames the install of LTEOnOff. I have it installed but do not use it. Maybe if I ever have to hard reset (such as if ever run the unlock), I will not reinstall that program.

'3G Only' option immediately zeros the network.

New day, new issue.
I just activated 3G on my phone. I go to Wireless & Network> Mobile Network>Select Network.
Now, here is the catch.
WHen I click '3G Only', the network goes zero with a little Plus sign. Like the medical shops have.
But when I click 'Automatic' the network returns. BUT I still have a 'E' on top with arrows in both directions blinking.
Now, my question, how do I know if I am on 3G or not. The Speedtest app shows speeds as much as 2G still...
Any ideas??
It does the same for me, but get a 3G signal after 10 seconds or so.
It's probably just trying to search for a decent 3G network, but it shouldn't take too long since you live in Bombay and its a major city.

[Q] Problem with LTE/EHRPD

Hi folks,
I have a weird situation with my phone.
Under stock, the only way I could get a data connection is if I ran it in CDMA mode. If I turned on LTE/CDMA mode it would automatically show as "disconnected."
If I used signal check pro, it would say I am receiving eHRPD signal, but unregistered.
I can connect fine via EV-DO. Have a stable connection.
Under Cyanogemod, LTE is turned on, but automatically falls back to EV-DO.
I did talk with Ting and everything seems to be normal.
Any ideas?
Im curious about this too
I'm curious about this too, because I have the opposite problem where I only connect over CDMA/LTE
(stock 4.3 rooted, S-off)

Same here. Can't use CDMA only mode as it immediately disconnects. Also having issues with LTE dropping out constantly and I can only get it back with airplane toggle. Weird thing is that it never drops if the phone is plugged in. I've tested this extensively too.

That's really odd...
My wife has the same phone and everything appears to be working fine for her.
Well, I tried going to LTE/CDMA mode last night and it looks like everything works as expected now...
Really weird.
I know Sprint has been aggressively upgrading towers in the area.
Maybe just a glitch in the matrix?
I am running stock and have been having this problem for awhile now. Phone works fine in CDMA only mode (EV-DO) or if LTE connects. But the phone absolutely will not function over eHRPD, giving the error "Unable to establish a wireless data connection. LTE:ESM-65535". I had this problem three months ago for about a week, then it went away. Came back two weeks ago for about a week. And now it just started happening again. I always contacted the various support channels, although I never really heard back from anyone, so I don't know if someone got my message and fixed it or if it just went away on its own.
When it is fixed, my phone doesn't attempt to connect to eHRPD, so that when LTE drops out or is unavailable, my One Max drops to EV-DO and works great. But, after the over-the-air update from HTC two days ago and a forced profile update, my phone once again tries to connect via eHRPD, which clearly does not function.
Okay, I have finally fixed it myself. I used SignalCheck Pro to enter the Data/EPST menu in edit mode, typed in my MSL, went to Advanced, selected eHRPD and set it to Disabled. Now the phone seems to work just fine again. Still no idea what is going on here, or why I didn't think to fix it this way before, but here we are.
