[Q] Android 2.3.5 broke my GPS, help! - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I'm new here, but I've been leeching off the wealth and amalgam of smartphone "hacking" information here since I first got my HTC Incredible.
I've moved on to a Samsung Fascinate, and I've regretted it since. But because I cannot go back, I'm stuck with this heaping pile of techo-anxiety.
Anyway, my point is, the 2.3.5 Android update murdered my GPS.
Since no one actually calls me, my phone is my computer-away-from-my-computer. 80% of my phone's worth to me is google maps. Now, after the update, the google maps doesn't work!
I've scoured the internet for help, but all I can find is very outdated information on how to fix the GPS when on 2.1 or 2.2. I can't even get to the LBS testing mode because the dialer codes don't work.
GPS Aids doesn't work, either.
CAN ANYONE HELP ME, PLEASE?! D=
I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER! (Or, at least until I forget about you in about a day--hey, at least I'm honest, but I will be truly thankful--and so will everyone else who's been shafted up the butt by Verizon or Samsung.)
Tell you what, though, I will never buy another Samsung product again. EVERY Samsung product I've ever owned has failed on me--some even multiple times. Why can't my people make anything right? (yeah, I'm Korean)
Edit: Furthermore, I can't seem to root it since 2.3.5. Superoneclick just freezes.

Go to the general section find my guide that says how to flash a rom/cwm recovery/root/ or go back to stock and follow section 4. Basically you will be reflashing 2.3.5. The ota update has been causing folks alot of issues. My guide will get u back in business!
Then follow section 5 to root!

Thank you, sir... I love you...
Section 4 did the trick, and my GPS works beautifully well.
I will also give Section 5 a try soon to root my device!
Once more, thanks!

Same Problem
Hello! I am glad to see the problem is fixed. I am having the same issues but am a little less tech inclined, so is it possible to get a bit more detail, or step by step instruction on how to accomplish this? Thanks so much!!

My guide in the general section has everything you need as already posted lol...If the guide is not noob friendly enough for you then, A) you need to do alot of research, or B) you shouldnt even consider flashing a rom as a brick may be around the corner.

I must STRONGLY disagree with your assumption concerning the Fascinate. Now that you are on the well guided path to flashing roms and such, you will discover this device is an EXCELLENT one

Gps died
A few weeks ago my gps stopped getting a lock. I am stock 2.3.5 on a fascinate. I only understand some of the very basic lingo around here, like i get what OTA is, but have no idea what Odin is. I really need my gps to work. I didnt do anything new that could be linked to its recent failure. While I was driving over the weekend, a few times the navigation got a lock for a while after up to twenty minutes of searching, but mostly it gets no lock anymore. I have used gps status and the first time it worked after I downloaded assistance data and reset cached data, but since that first success it has stopped working and I have not been able to repeat any success with the gps status.
So, I am willing to try flashing various roms and such, but maybe I need even more basic info before I try to follow the aforementioned guides, since I don't know what any of that stuff is that is referred to in the guides. Where do I start, can it be fixed?
I have wanted to visit these forums forever, but with kids and life and such, have not had the opportunity to educate myself on these types of things. I think you guys are awesome.

[Q] Samsung Vibrant GPS Innacurate?

Seasoned Samsung Vibrant users,
I just got today Sept 30th my Samsung Vibrant, I hope that this GPS problem that I have it's just SOFTWARE and not HARDWARE problem and you may tell me with your experience / suggestions what this is about.
Before the Samsung Vibrant, I was using a HTC Mytouch 3g slide, the GPS on my slide has been very accurate, what I can tell you is that from my bedroom My slide detects properly my home address using Google maps, with Samsung Vibrant usually gives me an innacurate location using Google Maps as well.
I have turned ON the wireless and the GPS on Samsung Vibrant as I did the same with my htc slide and on Samsung Vibrant gives me around 40 to 50 meters difference with a wrong location,
I don't want to use WIFI because it’s not the case, why on my HTC Mytouch 3g slide I don't need WIFI also I won’t have WIFI everywhere where I go, so I want that the Samsung vibrant works at least the same or better than a HTC phone GPS hardware.
so my question Is that a hardware problem or software issue?
My HTC Mytouch 3g slide never fails where I'm in my bedroom or other place where I go and test it and this Samsung is getting me out of my nerves that isn't accurate at all.
HARDWARE or SOFTWARE problem?
If it is software I will wait, but if it is hardware, I’ll be very disappointed.
Thanks I really appreciate your answer about this issue,
I have 14 days to test it and if I'm not happy with it I can return it depending what this problem is.
OMG please use the search function.
It IS a software issue... vibrant is well knows for its gps to be messed up.. the new 2.2 is coming out in approx a month and it will have a gps fix and also make ur phone faster plus alot of other things

I have been trying to refrain from jumping on people for stupid posts, BUT ...
The gps issue has been an issue with the Vibrant since day one, and there are most likely hundreds of threads on it already ....
I know it is a little scary but that search box does not bite ...
Hell a google search of "Samsung Vibrant GPS" should tell you all you need to know ..
Come on people use some common sense and search first, at least pretend to search for the sanity of the rest of us ...

ROTFLMAO! Too True!
Oh no, my Vibrant might be messed up????
Really??
Welcome to the real world!
Been bad since day one.
Wow, everyone is being kinda douchy here. All you have to do is root your phone with one of the many methods, install clockwork recovery and flash either the JI2 GPS fix or this one which is the same thing but uses the JI5 files instead http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=796654 Good luck.

Douchy? Douchy , not sure what that means but I am sure it applies to ones who do not search or, fail to see that this question/answer is in about 100 other threads.

No i agree with you. I dont think I ever post questions here. I usually use my friend google and figure it out myself HOWEVER I also remember when i first got my very first android phone "G1" and was soooo lost at where to even begin. To the OP... they are right, you can find most anything by searching. I guess I only said that because some people just get plain rude. Not necessarily talking about you watcher64. Your post wasnt bad, just didn't really give any answer.

No offense taken , I just remember the old days of the forum, where this was a place to come learn, not to have the answers handed to you.
Seems everyone is looking for the quick fix these days, and really do not want to learn what they are doing or HOW it is actually done, then yell and scream at the people who help them that they broke their phone ...
EDIT:
Just to clarify I was on here almost 2 years before I asked more than a handful of questions, because 99% of the answers could be found by reading and searching, so it does get annoying that so many people want spoon fed these days.
It took you longer to write about your problems than it takes to search .

I would agree with you some fixes seem to work for some people , other for others, but they do work, it is just a matter of finding the one that works for you ...
If none work, then may be time to exchange the phone for a new one ...

There is a big difference between not knowing, and "NOT EVEN TRYING", that is the biggest complaint ...
How do you think most of us here got the knowledge we do have, we looked it up, if you work a little for something, you will tend to remember it in the future...
This is a place for Development, and Education , not hand outs, never has been, and should never be taken as so ....
But I digress, you are right why should anybody here give a damn ....
OH because if nobody gave a damn, the people that get ask the questions would not know the answer either ....
No you speak the truth ppl should research, I had an off day when I posted sry if I sounded like a jerk. I do plenty of research on my own b4 doing anything to my phone, and if I brick it I have no one else to blame but myself. For example I have been researching the whole flashing with odin on my spare time, which isn't much still haven't got comfortable enough to try though. I just felt like the guy was getting slapped around a bit too much that's all.

[Q] DUMMIEs for Android!

Hi, Everyone. i am BRAND new to android OS. i've been using IOS until recently i got Samsung Galaxy S2 i777 ATT--running android 2.3.6 gingerbread, for $9.99 (gre8t deal huh)
1) can someone PLEASE give me Step-By-Step guide on rooting/unlocking my device?
2) what is the VERY 1st thing i should do with my phone before rooting?
--also i dont have any MicroSD--i dont use tons of App or anything so is there a problem me not having MicroSD?
--also i am Wi-Fi cover 100%, 99.99% of the times and NOT wanting to use ATT Data
once rooted--will my Internet work (must hav for myself).
3)what are ROMs (i kno little abut them) but, which one are best & how should i keep up-to-date with it?
4)once unlocked my phone, can i continue using WITHOUT paying for DATA?---like i do with my Iphone (turning 3g & cell data OFF)

I get the feeling that some (myself included) will question this part. There are guides in this forum for nearly everything you asked. Search and I'm sure you'll find them.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1511999
Read, Read, Read is my first tip.
Start here, you will find everything for rooting.
Just a heads up as well, the search button and google should become your best friend. This forum is a self service forum, people don't take to kindly to those that don't do their research before posting.
SORRY!!! like i said i am DUMMMY to this android and really Fresh outta boat here. ive read alll the posts but, get very confused --sum say internet dont work after rooting....
If you are still confused after reading the link yoderk posted, then maybe you should not mess with your phone.
Just spend some time reading. Read more and rarely make new threads. This phone has been out for a while now so if you have a question, it probably has been asked before and answered.
1. It's in the link posted.
2. Turn it on
-no
-yes (unless you fuxxor it up)
3.a Did you google it?
3.b no such thing as "best" or else there would just be 1 ROM and everyone would be using the same one.
4. wifi? sure

Internet will work fine after rooting.
If you just got the phone, I would seriously recommend taking about 2 weeks to read up and figure out what you are doing. Everything is fairly simple once you know the terms and common lingo. Don't jump in and come out with a nice paper weight.

I suppose my previous post was less than helpful. 'pologies.
1) There is a thread that will give you step by step instructions for rooting your phone. "Zedomax" has videos available as well. Check out galaxys2root.com under the AT&T section. Yoderk's post will prove helpful, should you read it.
2) The first thing you should do is turn the phone on Kidding. Backup your apps and data, just in case. Backing things up is usually a good first option no matter what you're doing with your phone.
-- No MicroSD card, no problem. Your phone has a few gigs of memory built into it. Just buy one if you need more storage space on your phone.
-- Internet will work just fine if you root successfully. Same goes for Wifi.
3) The best ROM is the one you like the most. Try them out and see for yourself.
4) I'm not sure what you're asking with this one.
THANKS everyone, & once again SORRY---lately thats what i been doing READIN everything i can about Android
but one thing thats keep bothering me is, i saw zedomax's video and they have OLD 2.3.4 gingerbread & i have 2.3.6 gingerbread....
can i still proceed with old files? or there are upgrades that i keep missing?

I wouldn't recommend using that method, I would flash entropy's stock package that includes root and cwm via odin.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1286432
you can find it in the op of that thread.
Ok, thanks
i am sinking all the info now, gettting hang of it
one more quest. is Titanium backup free? and wht is most imp things to back up besides Apps?
I would suggest using it stock for a week, see if it does everything you need it to.
If it does, then just run stock.
That way there's no risk.
If you do decide to flash then like everyone else is saying, read and reread. Spend some time, several days just reading because there might be some little bit of information that you might miss, but is critical to a successful flash.
Good luck and welcome to freedom.

Well you can get the free version but I highly recommend getting the pay version as it saves time hand over foot as it will bulk install all of your apps. As far as apps, maybe sms if you need them that's all I do. Just a word of advise with TB never restore system apps to a different rom, it'll give you a headache.

[Q] I think I can stump xda forums... seriously messed up 16gb

It's been a while since I've worked on this, and I still can't find anyone with a similar problem on xda. Does anyone have a clue what's going on with this thing?
First, I got it working just fine with CM7 installed to the nook itself, not running from an sd card. That worked for a bit, then it started just shutting off with no obvious reason.
Also, if I make any changes, like uninstalling apps, it goes right back after a reboot - which happens whether I want it to or not. This applies to changes done with CWM as well, even installing a new rom.
On top of that, it won't boot from an sd card, so that sucks too.
Lastly (I think, it's tough to keep track of all these problems) abd doesn't recognize the device, and for that matter the operating system doesn't either. I've been using Ubuntu Lucid if that matters, but it didn't have issues detecting the device before.
I'm pretty novice, but I think this is a very complicated problem in need of expert advice. Any answers, tips, advice, or pointing in the right direction for any of my problems here would be awesome. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.
Dude you say your a novice thats one... Two you are being critical of people who volunteer on this stuff. You can't be serious. You obviously have not read the support threads because you are not the only one with these problems and those that have them also did not read enough initially and failed to follow some step. Moreover, even if your problem were unique who do you think you are getting upset at anyone but yourself for taking the risk. Read the support thread for cm7 Mr. Ungrateful... flash back to stock and leave this forum alone until you 1. Learn what it means to be grateful. 2. Learn to follow instructions. The end

Thanks, that reminds me, I did follow all steps to the letter without a hitch to get CM7 going. It wasn't until after it was running for a few days that this happened. Also, in the aftermath while trying to solve the problem, I did everything I can think of to completely brick the nook so that I might be able to use some of the methods here to unbrick.
And just to defend my good name, I think it's a stretch to imagine I've been critical of anyone. To reference your other post on these forums, perhaps you might reconsider how to be helpful. Let me help you out with that.

One: This was a completely pointless flaming. Two: For being a novice he seems to be a bit more informed than you are. This is an issue, however not a common one. And from what I have read in these forums there is not as yet a fix. Three: I didn't read any ungratefulness, criticism, nor any hint of being upset. And Four: If you can't help out or give any useful advice then maybe you should "leave this forum alone" until you learn to be more civil.

Alright, so thanks to old_fart and DavDoc I've determined two of my problems, and I think there are four.
First, DavDoc's linked thread describes perfectly what's happening with problem one, what I'm calling the Groundhog Day Syndrome for no particular reason. Any changes to my nook go right back after it's powered off.
Second, I checked out old_fart's linked thread and I'm pretty sure even though I have a blank screen it's still on in one mode or another. The program doesn't work though because of problem #3 (to be explained) but it seems sensible because to power it back on I must first hold the power button for an extended period of time and release, then hold it again for the normal power-up.
Problem number three is that the nook is not recognized by either Ubuntu or Windows when plugged in anymore. Thus that program not working, and also adb. I may be able to determine that one from error logs as soon as I figure out what in the world the error logs are saying.
Fourth and hopefully final, it won't boot from sd. I'll figure that out too.
Thanks for the advice so far, this forum is definitely indispensable for people who like to learn from playing with technology.

Completely new to rooting.

Hi all,
I am very fresh to this forum. Even though I got my account created in 2006 on this website I never used it.
All over the internet and the forums people mention about rooting the phones. I never really cared about rooting my phone out of the fear of bricking it. So I always put that option away. Now its serious time to learn it, as I am understanding the real benefits of it.
I own a Samsung Galaxy Note LTE SGH -i717D which is from the carrier Telus in Canada. How do I start of with rooting on this device? What is the latest version of Android available for this device for rooting? Are the custom ROMS really flawless?
Somebody please kindly help me get rid of the starting trouble I have.
Thanks all.

This has got to be the easiest method of rooting. It's what I've used on a few different phones and has never failed me!
Custom roms vary in stability. If they are based on source code they are going to be more stable than others. They will say "built from official source". Other roms can be just as stable depending on the developer and how much effort was put into the rom. You have to read the threads on the roms to compare issues if any, then pick the one you want to try.
The best advice I can give you is before you install or flash anything you verify it's for your device, and read the instructions at LEAST twice!
Welcome to xda ... I suggest you first read the xda rules. This is the general forum. Not for questions. There is a Q &A forum to ask questions in ... After searching.

That link works basically for all i717's but the OP has a Canadian Note and it requires another step.

Whoa, that's freakin bizarre that it does an auto reinstall of the stock recovery. very creative.
Wow, Thanks to everybody who got involved. I didn't know that I had this many replies, I just got a notification for the first reply. Thanks a lot.

Hi all,
I am very fresh to this forum.
Thanks all.

Admin, my intention isn't to hijack this thread. But I thought I'd ask prior to starting a new thread since I having the same concern, and before I get flamed. Please let me know which approach would be suitable to ask more questions while staying on topic.
I've been researching and reading tons of information everywhere. However I reached the conclusion that the more I read the more confusing it became. Whenever I thought I was ready to take the plunge, It's so overwhelming even figuring out what's current or what's outdated methods and files needed - I simply can't catch up without direct assistance.
OP: Thanks so much for starting this thread. For me, being a long time Android OS lover, yet entirely newbie when it comes to rooting jargons - I couldn't have said it any better - you took the words right out of my mouth!!!... The only tiny difference is that I have the SGH -i717R (Rogers).

Hi Lousk,
I know its really hard for a newbie to even think of where to start when it comes to rooting, because there are tons of information on rooting all over the internet and moreover confusion too. I learned it the hard way and I am glad to say now that I came out with flying colors. As with each official update, my device was getting totally sluggish, non responsive and out of all very little battery life. I couldn't stand this at all, one evening I sat on the internet, took the whole night before starting to do on anything with my device.
I didn't install any custom roms, but I rooted it which in turn helped me turn off a lot of services running in the background and also uninstall all the Samsung bloats, mainly the touchwiz. That thing is really resource hungry. Now my device is working at lightning speed and I have a feeling that it wont be obsolete in another 10 years.
I have all the files and also the instructions on rooting on my drive, unfortunately XDA is not allowing me to paste the link over here unless I have made 10 posts. They say it is just to prevent spams. If you are willing to give me your email id I can sent the link to you.
Go ahead and root your device to get the full potential of your unit.
Good luck,
Sumesh

[Q]What is the Best Way to Root Note SGH-i717??

Hello, I was just wondering the best way to root the AT&T Samsung Note SGH-I717. I have looked up many ways but every time I scroll down to the comments I read everyone is having problems. I would just like the best and most proven way to root the phone. I use the phone with straight talk, it is an unlocked att phone, will rooting the phone affect anything with Straight Talk? I am new to rooting so please be detailed and give me links to get everything I need. Thank You so much.

so here is the deal, here are 2 methods with very subtle differences. you didn't say what your phone was running now, so here are my suggestions.......
READ, READ, READ
I know you are new here, and I was once too. I went through all of this and was very nervous about the process. (no real reason to be)
I spent a good 2 weeks reading so I would feel confident about what I was doing. I would read through these and figure which is better for you or which you feel more confident in using. they would both work fine depending on your situation or what you phone is running. because these threads are older, you may run into an issue as to where the download files are not active anymore. that is where a recent Google search could come into play. you say you have read the comments for different methods have had negative results. problem is you don't know whether that person followed the directions correctly or whether they were just in a hurry and missed something.
that's why I posted both these threads. compare to what you have read. I have a habit of going to the back of the threads and read forward. this tells me what the most recent problems may have been and if there is a solution. though the files may or may not be active, you can always get the file. its the PROCESS which is correct. compare them.
as I said........... READ, READ, READ
it puts you in the situation to help yourself first
take your time, do as the process suggests. I even rehearsed it several times. due to my lack of experience, I wanted to be as prepared as possible in case something went wrong.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1518962
both of these threads are from very reputable members of the community. as all threads will suggest......they are NOT responsible for what you do. make sure you are ready. watch Youtube tutorals, compare processes, have your files loaded and where you have easy access, read and rehearse.
take your time
whatever you need to do to feel confident. if something goes wrong....KNOW what you are going to do next. if you don't know where you went wrong in process or deviated from it, then others cant help.
good luck and I hope I have helped
edit.......
just saw this...this is at the back of Da G 's thread. suggested by AGOATTAMER. he is the man when it comes to having old links to process. this IS the one I used, that I couldn't find.
