Not satisfied with backlight (clouding)

Hi there,
I just got my touchpad 16gb and on boot (dark) my screen looks like this:
Is this normal on touchpad or should I send it back.
Thanks for your opinions!

It's an IPS display pannel screen, which are known for being super bright and having light bleed on blacks. However, they also have the best color gamut (range) and quality. Apple uses them for all of their displays (including the ipad). You could turn down the brightness a bit if it bothers you.

Thanks.

If I were you I'd definitely send it back while you still can and claim one of the 100,000 - 200,000 HP is going to produce next month. Mine has a slight cloudyness / gohsting effect like yours but is barely noticeable even on max brightness on a black screen. These Touchpads have been know to have screen defects due to improper installation or settling in during production. So if it were me I'd send it in for repair. Sorry you just got it and will end up missing it while its away I feel your pain. Hope I could help.
To fix the issue...
Go to setting and slide down the BRIGHTNESS...
Hope to solve your screen issue.
Mine looks identical to yours. Though I don't notice it very often in normal use.reminds me of my old g2x screen (also ips). I guess just live with it.

Mine looks similar. Luckily it's only really noticeable as the device boots.

backlight clouding
my touchpad got the same issue, seems to be normal, sadly
Add another one to the list.
All 3 touchpads I purchased exhibit similar backlight bleeding--all along the same left side, near the speakers.
1 was about as severe as the attached picture in the OP. The others minimal.
My guess is faulty design in tandem with the IPS technology resulting in what seems to be widespread--aka normal.
Yeah, i notice it on my normal desktop IPS monitors as well, but mostly if you have brightness way up and a full black screen. IPS has a drawback that it does not display true black very well. I keep my normal monitors at like 30-40% brightness (much higher and I would go blind from it) and I don't really notice it.
All are the same
Have seen 6 of them plus mine...same issues.
Deal with it at 99... whe ask perfection for a tablet at the price of the photo frame. HP should return your money and donate the tablet to a poor kid in the third world. They will save some money in that case...
If less means "more" than "all" will be nothing!
Yeah my Asus Transformer IPS panel also had light bleed. It the IPS panels are excellent screens, but this is one of the prices you pay. Besides during normal use you don't really notice it.
I advise not staring at your screen while it's booting up.
Got my TP back from the European Service Center (located in Hungary) today.
Well, the bleeding on the left edge of the screen got slightly better BUT the operation left visible marks on the housing.
It seems they pried the Touchpad open with some sort of tool around in the area of the rubber seal surrounding the display, thus leaving "screwdriver-marks".
I will contact HP Support again.
Should have listened to you IPS Panel guys

My Prime is creaking! WTF ?!

Well I hoped that Asus after TF101 realized that the have to improve the build quality of their tablets. Imagine my madness when I discovered my new Prime is creaking...!!!
A little below of Top left corner of prime. God.....
TF101 was creaking but I never would thought that TF201 will be creaking too!
I thought it will be as good made as Ipad....
Well Asus - this is the last tablet I have bought from you...
Also got a question about the screen. Some times I can sense and see that despite of auto brightness off that the screen adjusts its brightness by itself. It is a little change but my sharp eyes can see this...
Do you have a similar thing?
Contrast changes dynamically when set to power saving mode.
TF201 / XDA premium
Yes I know. But I use all modes and feel the same that sometimes the screen changes a little the brightnes.
my prime seems pretty solid. maybe the glue on your glass panel needs to still set more. Man, Asus has really came up with hit or misses on a tablet being flawed or not. this is a great device though. at the area where you said you hear creaking, does it look like the panel is not flush there? where did you buy it from? you can always exchange it. I know some don't like having to send it off n wait for another one. hearing some of these panel or touchscreen issues be making me check mines on the spot. luckily mines don't show those symptoms.
Yes the brightness changes based on the lighting of the area at the time; it's called auto-adjusting. That is normal and I like that.
Mine is loose and not flush with the device on the bottom right but it is not a huge deal to me

If you push in on the glass in this spot does your volume rocker move?
no it does not
That sucks man. I would be really annoyed if i had a creak in my prime. I have to wonder if they rushed through fixing the wifi issues and damaged some of the primes while in the process. I have seen all of the pics with the scratched bezels that look like the techs were using a flat-head screwdriver to pry these things apart. I'm not sure if mine never went for repair or if the tech that did mine just had the right tools and skills but it seems to be a perfect specimen physically at least. I would love to read an inside account of this product release.

The brightness changes when using this app huh? When u touch the screen to scroll it quickly brightens then goes to normal? It seems like the xda app not the prime
Modded by MBOK
I have an HTC G2, and whenever I touch the screen on a lighter background it changes the tone of the background to a pinkish color. It does it in XDA app as well as web browser, almost anything with a white-ish background. Sounds similar to what your experiencing, it only happens when you touch the screen, right?
the problem with the self adjusting brightness accurs while playing or watching youtube. It doesnt matter if am toutching screen or using dock keybord or just a mouse. I do not know if it is on purpose.
Did you notice the same issue?

I do. None of the other issues but noticed this brightness geekin out with the xda app
Ugh. Mine starting creaking today. It is like the left hand side of the screen has separated something. The right side feels solid. The left has flex to it - like the glass gives ever so slightly, resulting in a very annoying 'click'.
This really sucks, because otherwise the device is fine (no stuck pixels, wifi and GPS works). Guess I'll wait a week or so for Best Buy to get some local stock before taking it in for exchange.

I noticed that my xda app and all Tapatalk apps change brightness for some reason when pressing things I went into the settings on the app and changed the theme to dark works great now. I I also get a creak where my volume rocker is which is cool with me I figure its just because the gap where the rocker is I just don't press it

My TF101 had this and my TF201 does wiggle a bit in the top left. It makes sense with the volume controls there.

Found three bright lights on screen today!

I haven't realized this before until I bring up a new document from polaris app. I then noticed three bright pixels on my screen far brighter than rest of the screen.
I called Asus and they said if they can't fix the issue then I can choose to receive a refurbish or new prime.
Guys check your screen.

Are you telling me to check something that I have to look at every time I use it? Really?
I had this on my second one. But mine was more of a bright spot rather than a pixel. It varied in intensity whether my prime was plugged in or not. If it was plugged in it was way brighter.

Sh*t happens. RMA it. Least they are offering you a new prime! Thats good.
I'm pretty sure what your seeing are dead pixels. I have 2 currently on mine. For me it doesn't reveal itself under dark colors. But light colors seems to bring it out. When I rebooted and when the ASUS screen popped up I examined the screen real hard and noticed that those same pixels were actually dead. Which explains why I couldn't see it under black background. The Asus loading screen is black but it has backlight lit up to were I can see those dead spots. I don't know just my own findings. Could be completely different.
Edit: Mine was also a bright spot. Made more defined when under lighter backgrounds. Like I said. When under the boot screen look at it again maybe have to adjust it in an angle and you will see that it appears to be a dead pixel where that same bright light is.

I have one of these also. It's only visible on white backgrounds and even then it's not a big deal. It's bottom left when my Prime is in the correct landscape orientation.

Prime low refresh rate screen

When I got my Prime I was like F yeah but after a few days, I've noticed that the screen seems to be sort of flickery. Not in the sense that it is actually changing colors but its like the effect on old crt tv's where when you wave your hand in front of it, your hand seems to have an afterimage. I am on ICS and have also noticed that the screen stops having this effect when on full brightness in super ips mode. I find this to be strange because I have a janky old ipad and it doesn't have this effect. SO, my question is this. Is asus using bad screens or old tech or is it a software bug? I believe it has something to do with the refresh rate of the screen.
Sent from my quadcore slab of cheese using xda premium.
Probably a SW issue. I don't have that on my prime n I'm on ICS also.
When on cyanogen, I saw an option to "decrease hysteresis". My evo 3d never had this problem so I never used it. I wonder if that could help.

Yep, I see it too. I can also see it when scrolling text on a webpage. My wife, however, cannot. So I think maybe some people are just more sensitive to this kind of thing.
I read somewhere while researching the prime that when in powersaver mode the screen refresh rate is dropped to 35Hz. This makes sense, I guess. But I couldn't really see any difference between powersaver mode and performance mode, so I don't know if this is a reliable report.
The refresh rate thing is slightly annoying to me but I can live with it, I guess.

Screen tint fluctuation issues?

I got my GS3 A few days ago and i noticed the screen look awfully warm, so i thought it was just samsung color calibration. But when i tilt the phone in any angle from a normal viewing angle the screen temperature goes warm to cold. Has anyone had a similar experience?
Same exact problem here man. I've posted a few threads about it but I figured I was alone since no one replied. My room step s3 is yellow as well. I'm on my 3rd and they have all been the same.
I'm just going to assume it's calibrated this way. Sure does look nice from an angle though lol
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
upgrading from the gs II, I picked up my gsIII last week and noticed the warmer color...especially on a white background. The warm white reminds me of LCD instead of OLED... i was thinking Samsung duped us and swapped LCD for OLED.
Since the color becomes cooler when you change the viewing angle, i'm thinking it might be a tint in the screen glass or digitizer to give that warmer color when viewing straight on. Personally, I prefer whiter whites but it seems most smart phone users, especially iphone users, are used to/prefer a warmer white screen so maybe Sammy is trying to appeal to the masses used to a LCD look
I hate it, especially coming from the GS2. Looking at it from an angle the screen looks perfect, WHY SAMSUNG WHYYYYYYYYYY:crying:

Well...coming from a Galaxy Note - which was WAY too 'cool' of a tint (to where it was almost green) - I am thrilled to have a warmer white with the S3!
But I have also spent the last many years as a video/TV "purest" and have my home theater stuff professionally calibrated. Warm (reddish) whites are much more accurate and are actually the NTSC standard (6500k).
I too noticed and hence this thread

Comparing with vibrant i even thought i had a defective screen. But when i put GS3 next to my laptop and desktop lcd screen, the whites look much better and thus i console my self

I just did the same thing and the whites definitely look better than my laptop screen. I guess I can live with that.
Coming from an OG Epic with voodoo sound and color will just be an adjustment I guess.
Has anyone returned their phone because of this issue? If so how did you go about returning it?
