So I have been here and there, had this and that and enjoyed most phones I have owned, this however is not a "Razr vs Galaxy Nexus" thread. I just happen to be someone who switched from the Galaxy Nexus to the Razr and am having some issues and am looking for some help.
I picked the phone up before work and didn't have a chance to use it until I got to work and my experience at work was slightly disappointing to say the least, one of the biggest complaints I had with AT&T and my 4S was that I didn't have a data connection at work, so I switched over to Verizon for the Galaxy Nexus (more on this later).
Well the Razr seemed a bit strange today, it seemed as though I would go from three bars of 4G to full service of 3G, the issue being that this process took 20 minutes with the phone being unusable in the meantime. The other issue I faced was that my data connection was almost none existent. If I loaded up a website the front page would load but clicking a link woild either do nothing or would load a blank page. The most concerning part seemed to be that if I closed the browser or just switched to another task not only would I lose any background tabs but the phone would take the tab I was on back to the Google home page. Shouldn't the phone remember what website I was on instead of the browser resetting every time I go to another task?
My most concerning issue, which I'm not sure if it's specific to my device or is a Razr thing, is that upon looking at the screen head on the text entry field (white) has a yellow tinge and the grey buttons surrounding the keyboard are seriously yellowish. The strangest part is that if I tilt the phone either left to right or up and down all yellow tinge goes away and the display/picture looks incredible. What in the world?!?!?
I'm also now having issues remaining connected to my wifi network at home (works and then remains connected but no data transfer until its shut off and turned back on)
For the record I understand Verizon has had issues lately and am wondering if this is a lingering issue. My galaxy nexus averaged less bars but would switch between 3G and 4G almost instantly and was very speedy connection wise even with less bars (on 4G) .
Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Sorry you're having so much trouble. I haven't experienced any of the issues you are having.
Hand off from 4g to 3g and vice versa takes a few seconds for me. Verizon has had a few outages lately so data has been a bit spotty for many people.
Have you tried a 3rd party browser such as Dolphin Browser? Try duplicating the issue on another browser other than the one you're using.
The screen on the Razr does have a greenish/blueish tint when it is set at low brightness levels. This is a flaw of the AMOLED screen technology used. However, I have not noticed any yellowish tinge, and when looking at my phone dead on it looks much better than if I were to tilt it in any direction. Whites don't look absolutely white, but definitely not yellowish.

Absolutely not true. It is a software problem that will be solved with a custom kernel when Moto will unlock the bootloader.
Can you expand on this; the screen tint being an os problem and not related to the type of screen. Mostly just curious.

Please elaborate. I'm extremely curious to how a custom kernel can change how a screen technology produces colors. Awaiting your reply.

My phone clearly has a yellow tint of everything when looking directly at it, tilting it left or right, up or down and everything whitens out and gets more crisp. Are you saying this is normal and software related??
Anyone else notice this?

Mine does not appear to have the tint.
---------- Post added at 02:14 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:13 AM ----------
Mine does not appear to have the tint. It is easy to adapt and get used to color issues, so I compare to other devices like the Rezound and Gnex.
Only issue I have is green and red are GREEN and RED, but that is the issue with this current tech.
I believe that the slight tint is due to the AMOLED technology used and the one used in Razr does not use the traditional RGB color pattern i think it uses RGBG ... using a kernel with Voodoo driver could let one alter the colors to their liking ... just like in the Galaxy S and Nexus S =) hope i was of some help

Display cannot be corrected with software.
I haven't had any display problems at all. I believe the problem lies in a faulty build batch. I've heard it throughout the RAZR threads, and it may be necessary to contact your provider about the problem, and make them give you a razr that works properly. As far as browsers, I have all of the 3rd party browsers installed for just a case. I never use stock, and although it's a bit slower, XScope has always had the best results for me (on almost 10 different devices, and 3 providers).

I dont have much to say other than that I have the same problem. Head on the white is yellowish and just a bit tilted it's much better.

The white is a bit more white IRL but the photo is pretty much showing the truth.
Gonna see if I can get it replaced tomorrow.

After a visit to two Verizon stores and looking at three Razrs (2 black, 1 white) I can assure everyone that this is simply a trait of the screen used on the Razr.
All four Razrs I have had in my hand have experienced the same thing, slighting yellow white and greys head on and a slightly blue/bright white when looked at from an angle. A great way to see the difference is in the XDA app when looking at the new post list, just look at the green bubble on the right side at am angle, it pops much much better than looking straight on.
On a good note though my screen was by far the least yellow of all four I looked at (all set to the same brightness and tested at different levels including auto brightness ) and was the only one that didn't have image retention.
I will live with it though because other than that I am working through most issues and love the phone.
On a side note has anyone noticed when unplugging the Razr that directly after you do the batter goes from 100% to 99& instantly? Just wondering if anyone else noticed this. Thanks!

Water-repellent nano-coated Smartphone
Just to participate in the brain storm, could it be due to the water repellent nano- coating that the screen appears to have a coloured tint of some kind. The colors are - after all lightwaves and of the nano-coating has an influence on that they might just bend the lightwaves a bit. Honestly I don't really see it unless I really want it to be there.
Just got my Razr yesterday, compared to my bionic the screen is yellow lol. Whites are not white like on my bionic, they have a slight yellowish tint, but your right when tilted to the side its fine. Go figure.

I'm in a similar situation as several other people around these forums are - I purchased a Razr from Costco and it had the splotches on black screens and developed a dead pixel. I then returned it and got another which doesn't have dead pixels but still has the splotches and also seems to have a very creaky case (feels like it's not together very solidly). Also, I do notice the colors aren't as accurate as I would have hoped with an extremely narrow viewing angle before color significant color distortion. Has there been any consensus made as to what "issues" are expected with these phones? Obviously Motorola doesn't think the splotches are a defect, but with Costco I can return as many times as I want I did notice that my current Razr had a late November build date, which was interesting in light of the other thread around here saying the October (pre-launch) devices were the ones most likely to give trouble.

I'm not sure how a sampling of 3 devices ensures that the trait is shared by the thousands created, though I too have seen three Razrs all sharing these problems. I was hoping the White one would have been improved in that regard.
I know the yellow tint he speaks of, so do others. It's there.
Takes a lower brightness to really see it.

Sadly the longer I use the phone the less I notice the issue because I'm getting use to it but then I see someone else's phone and instantly see the yellow again.

If you are viewing this thread, hopefully you haven't bought the Evo 3d just yet or are still within your 30 days. I just wanted to share my experiences with the Evo 3D to help others avoid the headaches I have had with a few visual defects on some Evo 3d's and also an operational defect. I would recommend inspecting the phone for these things before you leave or before you'll be outside your 30 days and offered a refurb. I made the mistake of not looking things over at the store, and it took me 2 replacements to finally get a phone that didn't have these defects.
Please Note: I'm a very picky person, so I always check my new phones for defects and eye sores before I get to the point where I am unable to resolve the issue within 30 days. Some of the things that I have an issue with may not be a big deal for others. Many people are happy with their phone even with a minor defect, but I feel if it's brand new it should be the same quality as a brand new phone.
If your opinion differs on what matters and what doesn't, don't bother trying to debate. The purpose for this post is to help others spot minor defects that may be an eye sore for them personally.
Pin Hole Size White Dot near Capacitive Buttons
-While this may not be a big deal to some, I found it a rather annoying eye sore while using your phone in a dark room or when your bottom buttons are lit up.
-This shouldn't be too hard to spot, just make sure that your buttons are lit up. Usually you will have to cover the sensor along the top of the phone if you are not in a dark room to get the buttons to light up. See picture below for example.

Dead Pixel's on Screen
-Once again just a minor defect that is common on LCD screens, but if you are watching a movie it can become rather noticeable.
-The easiest way I found to check for this is to install "Dead Pixel Test" from the market. This app will go through several solid color screens which will help you spot a dead pixel if there are any.
Power/Sleep Button Activates with a Minor Touch
-Could be a possible issue if the phone is in your pocked and button is activated, your phone may turn off and you wouldn't even know it.
-The button should have somewhat of a click to it when your press it. Try gently putting your finger on the button without much pressure, and see if the screen turns on/off.
Dust Particles Under Screen or Glass Covering Camera's
-May cause pictures to appear fuzzy if you have dust under the glass, and well the screen that's self explanatory.
-Could be difficult to spot, just look from multiple angles to spot any dust.
Red Trim That Surrounds Camera Glass is Lose [Reported by: mayfield103]
-Only have seen this mentioned a few times, but could be a big eyesore if it comes out. I would guess that this issue stems from the rear cover on the phone not being taken off carefully but check anyways.
3D/2D Toggle Button is Wobbly or Lose (Fairly Common Issue) [Reported by:dirkyd3rk and a few others]
-This is more so just annoying when the phone vibrates so does the button itself. Could be a problem in the future though if the button actually pops off from being slid back and forth a number of times.
-Easiest way to check for this would be to just slide the toggle, if it has give before fully locking into 3D or 2D then the button is probably faulty. You may get weird looks for this but if you shake the phone you can also hear it as well.
Screen is Slightly Tilted to Either Side [Reported by: DeMiNeO]
-"It's almost unnoticable if your not looking at it, but then drives you mad once you find it".
The Infamous "Light Bleed" Along Bottom and Slightly Up Sides of the Screen
-This has been reported and debated by quite a few people. Some say its light bleed, while others say the Capacitive buttons are just too bright. This just appears as a slight glow between the side of the screen and the frame of the phone along the bottom. Those who had the OG Evo know exactly what this looks like.
-If you have access to a decently dark room this shouldn't be hard to spot, wake the screen and look along the bottom edge of the screen.
Picture borrowed from: itsallsubliminal
-"You can see if it effects you easily by looking at the upper right corner of your phone. If it looks tilted, you have the issue".
These issues seem to be isolated, so don't let this sway you from buying the phone. I am very satisfied with my phone I just wanted to provide a thread for such issues.
Hopefully this will help some people out and prevent multiple trips to the Sprint store for a replacement. As I said before, some may not care about these issues but if you notice the little things I would recommend checking for these defects. If I missed something else just post the issue and I will edit the OP.

Only thing I noticed on mine is that dot u pointed out its a cosmetic thing not a defect more like a ant tit of a spot can't see it unless u rape your phone with your eyeball other that my phone zero issues no problem with pixles or leakinglight which people claim they have its not leaking just bright ass buttons .

Check to make sure your screen isn't tilted either.
I've seen where some people's screens (And the Sprint Demo evo3d) had the screen tilted to the right a TINY TINY bit. It's almost unnoticable if your not looking at it, but then drives you mad once you find it. You can see if it effects you easily by looking at the upper right corner of your phone. If it looks tilted, you have the issue.

I hear you there, My OG EVO had the white splotch of doom too. It appeared in the lower center of the screen. I didnt know it was a well known defect until 8 months later, or that you could switch it out under the mfg warranty. So this is a good thread to have.
The kind guys at my radioshack swapped my evo 3d that had dirt under the screen in a few places. they didnt even look at me weird. They seemed to understand that I didnt want to look at that for at least one (possibly 2 years).

Hokay, I added more pics to my album. Sorry about the terrible shakycam, I don't have a tripod or anything, and flash screws everything up.
Here's the two side-by-side. One thing I noticed: the Nexus is absolutely fantastic at preserving the blacks. I'm sure this is due to a difference in backlight/screen tech, but it's really impressive - black is just black on the Nexus. The Amaze is much lighter grey when it's supposed to be "black". Here's the two side-by-side with the backlights at their lowest and highest settings:
But even without any backlight or bottom lights, the Nexus' screen is still noticeably blacker than the Amaze. I also added another picture I found elsewhere on the web with two versions of the Nexus S - it is just a difference in the screen tech (SuperLCD vs AMOLED). That may be a factor here as well.
I'm not trying to discredit the Amaze at all - I own it, I love it, and I plan on keeping it. The screen bleed is probably made worse/more noticeable by the screen tech choice, which isn't as good at reproducing blacks. This isn't a huge issue for me, but I just wanted to document the differences here. I'm just taking the best pictures I can to represent it - it really is noticeable in person too, if you care about such things.
Can you take pictures in normal daylight on it's auto light settings to show how it looks in real life..

Wow, indeed. I didn't think the blacks would be so different on the two phones (which is why I thought it came from your pictures - evidently I was wrong).
Those pictures are awesome and clearly show how the bottom lights affect the screen, thanks!
Not enough to make me reconsider (though maybe I'll change my mind when I finally have it in hands).
My friend had a very similar light bleeding in his EVO...one day he broke the screen and when replaced with a new one, the problem was gone. so it was a manufacturing issue on the first screen.

Hokay. I've added some outdoor pictures, and a set of indoor pictures in my dark apartment now that it's day. Updated link. It definitely is much less noticeable outside (although I spend a considerable amount of time inside that I count as "real life" as well ), and the Nexus screen is still blacker, although not as much. Yeah, the side-by-side Nexus pic I found really demonstrates that. It's not nearly as disparate outdoors, but indoors it's pretty noticeable. And it is just the screen tech - screen techs have their pros and cons, black reproduction is only one aspect of screen quality.

All the LEDs are capable of being dimmed, you just have to give them less power.

Not terribly on-topic, but LEDs are generally actually dimmed via pulse-width modulation - basically, if you want 50% brightness, you turn them on for 50% of the time, off 50% of the time, at >60Hz. Among other things, LED color depends on current - so supplying less current would not only make them dimmer, but change the color.
So being that im a tv whore (own a krp kuro) i was playing some pioneer demo material on my gs2. The demo has a ton of awesome dark scenes that really show off how black these amoled displays can get.
There was one part where there was just a black screen for about 10 seconds. Since i was in a dark room my eyes adjusted and noticed all these Blotches all over the black screen. Is this normal? I see it on a 100% black background that i created as well. Any one else have this issue? It kinda dumb i know since i only see this in a dark room with a black screen but its bugging me now. I would be devastated if my kuro looked like that in a dark scene so my phone isnt any different.
Im on a bravia engine Rom with screen mode on movie.

Normal, and might have come up in searches for "screen." People have complained here, asking people to go in closets and perform rituals to see if spots and lines appear. I will have your TV now. Thank you.
Righto. So I just took a picture of all black, then let my eyes adjust to the screen in the dar.... AND HOLY MOTHER OF MAY I? YES YOU CAN, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH MY SCREEN?!
Are all screens like this? Is there something that causes this? Because I honestly don't remember ever seeing these blotches on my screen, and i even looked once before.
Now it's so bad it looks like my phone has some venireal disease or skin-touchscreen cancer.

Seems like people are getting into a very humorous mood with the holidays, and it's spilling over to even serious threads.
What you describe is a defect of the screen. When the phone first came out, and for the first few weeks, there were a number of people who reported problems with the screen. The way to test the screen that was suggested at that time is exactly what you did with the black screen in a darkened room. I tried that test, and my phone has a completely black screen, with no light patches.
For some reason, there havn't been many reports at all since the first few weeks. You are only the second person I've seen to mention it, I think, since then.
The people that had the bad screens just exchanged their phones until they got a good one. Of course, at that time everyone was still within the 30 day period.
I was bein serious creep. I might have been comical in reply, but i genuinely want to know why my screen looks like crap now.

Actually, I'm quite certain this isn't a defect. In fact, it's just something that samsung says comes along with the Amoled technology, if you do a thorough search in google, you'll find multiple articles stating this. Do I think that since samsung screwed up on all these screens they are just saying that? Absolutely. But I also think that anyone who says they don't have it at all just maybe doesn't have it as bad. When I had the T989, it was so visible it annoyed the **** outta me, and it wasn't just splotches, but it was lines and stuff too. Now, I'm on my 2nd i777, and the first one had the splotches, not too bad though, and the current one I have is even less, but it is there, although you really have to stare and allow your eyes to adjust to see it. I think the next generation of amoled displays should have this little kink worked out, but if you look on the Razr forums, the t989 forum, and the skyrocket forum, they all have it as well. Its an all around AMOLED issue, and i dont think any displays with a Super AMOLED+ display are without it.
I'm the one who said my phone has a completely dark screen with no light patches. Well, that was a couple of months ago that I tested it, and I decided to do another test today. My house has a room with no window, so it is easy to get a completely darkened room.
When you put a black image on the screen in a dark room, the screen is not completely black. If you set the screen timeout to 30 minutes, and let your eyes completely adjust to the dark, the screen actually looks rather light, a sort of greyish. But the shade of grey and amount of light intensity theoretically should be uniform across the screen.
My screen is actually pretty uniform, but there is a slight gradation to darker arount the edges, a little more pronounced toward the top and bottom than on the sides. There is one very tiny area at the very top of the screen right on the edge directly below the AT&T logo, that is significantly darker than the rest of the screen. The difference in light intensity is not very much, but it is noticable.
The gradation of light intensity on this screen is so slight that it would be impossible to detect any difference in light intensity in normal screen use. People who have reported this problem are the ones whose screen is so variable, that they can see the difference during normal screen use. And if you would test one of those screens in a dark room, I'm told you would see a very marked difference in the light intensity.
So I say that if a screen is such that you can tell the difference when using the screen under normal conditions, then it is defective. But what Samsung or AT&T will say and do about it, I don't know. I havn't seen any reports from anyone that has tried to exchange their phone for that reason.
I tested screen out last night too and saw a few darker splotches around the bottom and side. Then my ocd kicked in. I was considering exchanging the phone today, but after reading this thread decided against it. Thank you all for the info

I'm not really concerned if my screen suffers from this but I have a question:
If it matters, at what brightness is your screen set to when you do this?
Sent from my SGH-I777 using XDA App
I had mine set to maximum brightness.
My screen also has the blotchiness but honestly i cant think of one time where this was a problem. you just dont notice it ever in day to day use and if you have to get in a dark room with an all black screen to notice it then i dont care.
I didn't want to start a new thread so I'll bump this one...

So I've noticed lines and stuff when I go into the market/google play (the grey shows multiple verticle and horizontal lines, but I have to look a little hard. Not too big a deal.) However, I tried using auto brightness which defaults much lower than I had it set to manually and the screen shows tons of lines everywhere. For instance, I use ryude's unoriginal rom, and with the stock messenger (bright white) I get a ton of lines. I was wondering how many people use auto brightness and if anybody else has this issue. I'm out of the 30 day replacement warranty, but I have an upgrade coming up soon so I'm not super worried about it. But still...

My main complaint with the screen is that last 2 out of 4 TFP's I had had washed out colours. Yes, there is a thread in regards to colours, but I want to take slightly different approach.
On Sensation, if you run command "dmesg" without brackets it brought load of info, including PANEL_ID_PYD.... Which gave you type of the screen. Since I had 50/50 good/bad screens, I wonder if we have different screens being shipped with TFP. Unfortunately, that command doesn't bring up anything like that, so question is, how to check screen manufacturer.
Now, I bet 100% that some of you have it and don't even know about it. My family thinks I'm mad, but being an amateur photographer made me see colours a bit more than your average person. So, even if you don't think your colours washed out, please check it and let me know your findings.

from the reports on this forum there definitely seems to be a lot of variation in the calibration of the tf201 screens that have been shipping. people who care about color and have gone through multiple units have observed that one is warm, another cool, another washed out... putting color tests up side-by-side against my HP ZR30w (S-IPS) and samsung GSII (super AMOLED plus), my tf201 is definitely a bit too warm and it doesn't have the best gamut compared to high end displays. but that's not really fair because both of these screens are more expensive and higher quality than what the tf201 is spec'd out to be. imo the tf201 screen is still very nice compared to other tablets out there so i'm fine with it.
Thanks for the input. I don't mind it to be on a warm side, but I like my red to be RED, not pale red. Same goes for blue. These seem to be most affected colours.
Anyone else?

The colors on my screen aren't even consistent lol
If I manually set my brightness, sometimes I'll unlock the screen to find deep, vibrant colors, and other times I'll unlock it to greens that I can barely see and reds that are nearly a shade of dark pink...
I personally believe that aside from actual individual defects of these screens, that ICS is at least partially to blame.
Anyone still on Honeycomb who can check this out? I swear I can't find a pattern to what causes them to look good or washed out, but I never know which I'll get. Reboot generally comes up to good colors (haven't noticed otherwise anyway)
I can tell you. Watch MAPS icon carefully, switch to battery mode, then back to normal or performance and watch the magic happen. Then lock and unlock screen to find normal-ish colours again.

battery saver mode definitely degrades display quality, wouldn't be surprised to find that it induces color shifts as well. run balanced mode for a while and see if you still have the problem.

Lol, I ran that "test" just by looking at home screens, then inside the market the first day of owning. All you really need to look at is your market, then look at the green, orange, blue, and red rectangles for the different sections. My tablet is ICE compared to my HTC Vision. This is why I think it is an issue of software more than anything. I do know that screens by default will be cooler or warmer than another; my identical LG LED monitors are just the slightest bit different. But the issue with washing out is something I did not notice in the few hours I was able to use my Prime and root it before it updated.
Yes, some will be slightly "defective," but I'm waiting for this next update and some homebrew'in ROM love after the unlocker. Then we'll truly see what's going on.
It's not as noticeable as it really is, dig?
I think it's clearest on magenta there, this is on Performance and SuperIPS.
The reason I'm doing it that way is that the picture is aweful without the SuperIPS on, when side-by-side to my LED screens.
Power saving + SuperIPS. More noticeable, but still doesn't look as bad as it does on the naked eye

Your one is good, very good. I'll post mine in the evening.
Now to determine wherever it is sw problem, we need to see if all of primes are the same, and if they are not, do panels differ or not. If panels are different, then possibly it is software. If panels are identical, then we have same sw, same panel, different colours = bad screen.
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio using xda premium
You cant just compare the colors on two different devices and say its the primes screen. There isnt a single display/graphics card on the market that displays colors correctly uncalibrated, regardless of how much you paid for it. With most displays the colors will be affected by the luminance levels. Most people adjust their displays for higher contrast and more saturation than what is actually true which can make other devices look pale or washed out. Im a professional photographer and know all to well that you cant use and uncalibrated monitor/grahics card combination for color adjustment in the photos. Ive seen many people over the years blame their cameras or printers for bad colors in photos when in reality it was the fact that an uncalibrated monitor was used in post processing. I use Xrite colormunki calibration tools on my PC and printer to make sure that what you see is what you get and its all true colors. This solution uses an optical measuring device and sends color offest values to the grahics card and print drivers. Any color variations are defnitely a matter of drivers to the display and unfortunately there are no adjustments available on android tablets although Spyder did release an app for Ipads.
I understand where you are coming from. It's not realistic to expect everyone to have calibrated screen. And yes, colours will vary between computer screens.
I had 4 primes, so I do have something to compare it to. I didn't notice anything like that with the first two, but it was obvious with last two.
Also, I compared it to all devices I have, and every device outperformed prime in regards to colour reproduction, especially red and blue.
Could you check yours with colormunki or against your calibrated screen please?
I really hope it's down to software, but I can't afford to gamble £500 on it.
I had some prints done professionally and compared them to my screen, so my screen is fairly close to real colours.

I wanted to branch out from the other thread and actually do a poll to see how many people are experiencing this problem, and how severely. In the other thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1515299), several people claim that their copies are absolutely perfect and show no signs of black crush. If you indeed have a "good" screen, your feedback will be incredibly valuable. Please post pictures of your phone, if you do the test below and the blacks display correctly!
The reason that most of us are seeing "black crush" or ugly blockiness in dark areas in videos and photos is that these artifacts are present in the source material. Blocky patterns are a result of compression, and are most noticeable at the extreme ends of the dynamic range, where there is the least amount of detail. So if these compression artifacts are present in the source material, why do we not see it on other devices? It is because most other displays are properly calibrated to gradually gradate dark tones from dark gray to black. In other words, on a properly calibrated display, the color #000000 (black, or RGB 0,0,0) is virtually in distinguishable from #010101 (RGB 1,1,1). In fact, it is hard to tell a difference until #050505 (RGB 5,5,5). Therefore, most of the clipping that occurs as a result of compression artifacts is hidden. However, with the Note, #010101 is very much distinguishable from #000000. Dark tones are too bright, and we're able to see clearly until #010101. Instead of gradually moving to black, at #000000, it drops off a cliff. This is why we see such a dramatic different between the darkest grays and blacks, and why this black crush issue is so noticeable.
The side effect of having grays that are too bright is that when watching Blu-ray quality HD video, the dark areas look washed out, and the picture lacks "punch". High quality video that is properly encoded very rarely have pure blacks (to avoid clipping). As a result, dark scenes appear too bright on our phones.
The method to test is with a gamma test pattern, which I have attached. Download QuickPic from Market/Play (free). Go to Settings -> Viewer, and check the box for 32-bit render. Then, download the attached .png file, and view it in full screen in QuickPic. Make sure to do this in a DARK room!
Each box with a number has a corresponding RGB value. For example, the box with the number 1 is RGB 1,1,1, and so on. Load it on your Note and report back the smallest number that you are able to see. Also, does it gradually go to black, or does it just abruptly go to black without a smooth transition?
Last week, I went to two AT&T stores, and tested every display model with this method. Even with the bright store lights, it was possible to see box #1 on every phone. Repeated the test on an iPad 2, Galaxy Tab 10.1, and Skyrocket. The iPad was too dark, as the entire left side of the test picture is unreadable. On the Galaxy Tab, I could see box #7 or so. The Skyrocket showed a similar problem to the Note, as it seemed to abruptly transition to black. However, it was still a bit smoother than the Note, and box #4 was the smallest I could see.
Here's a picture of the test on my phone. The right side is the test image itself, so you can see how it is supposed to look like on your computer screen. Compare this with what you see on your phones.

I'm not sure exchanging it will do anything. Like I said, I have tried 5 different display models. I have also had 2 Notes myself, so that's 7 copies total and they all exhibit this issue. When people watch a video, like starfield 720p and claim that it's "perfect", that can be subjective. But if you're able to clearly see the box with the number 1, and is dramatically different from the black box above it, then you can objectively conclude that the device has a problem. If you go exchange it, and get lucky, report back. One of the things I want to find out is what percentage of Notes (if any) display dark tones correctly.

I have no idea if it is hardware or not. It could be something as simple as an incorrect gamma curve, or it could be caused by a hardware limitation. If you want to get more into the technical stuff, you can refer to Supercurio's thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1430847

Thanks for your input. I am going to show this to ATT and see if they can let me test the note's and hope to find one that is better. There has been some luck with others in the other threads posted. Test does look quite different depending on how much you turn up the brightness, but either way I can see all the numbers.

Yeah, I was in the living room and looked and thought there was no problem, until I went into the bathroom with all the lights off...then it was clear as day.
So what can we do to fix this?
The Pic on my phone looks exactly like the one you show in the 1st post on the left I can clearly see all the way to #1.
So what can we do to fix this if there is anything that can be done or should we send our Notes back to Samsung?
I can see all the way down to 1 and this is my 4 phone. The black clipping issue is almost non existent on my phone. Don't know if this test is accurate.

Unfortunately I can see all the numbers, I have another Note which needs fixing, once its fixed I'll post again.

As of now, there is no known fix. Supercurio has been working on a fix for this since January. I have linked his thread below. The purpose of this thread, like I said, is to create an objective method of checking if black clipping exists on your device. This is a reliable and easy way of reproducing the issue, with the hope that you can easily demonstrate this to an AT&T or Samsung rep.

If you can see all the way down to 1, then your phone definitely has the black clipping issue. As I said before, watching a video is subjective. I can download the starfield 720p video with tubemate, and it will look great - but that's because the blacks in the video are pure black. With a real world video, this will not be the case.
When you see the box with RGB values of 1,1,1 and it is dramatically different than the top left box with RGB values of 0,0,0, then your phone exhibits the problem. If you still have doubts, go create your own image, and fill in half with RGB 1,1,1 and the other half with RGB 0,0,0. Put it on your phone and you will see a huge difference. On a properly calibrated display, the difference should not be discernible. Try it on other devices (TV, laptop, monitor, other phones, whatever), and you will see what I mean.
Read Supercurio's description of the problem in his thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1430847
He says, "Worst offender being shadows rendering: my diagnostic: what's supposed to be dark is not so dark.. and then boom its black (ie black clipping)
As a result color look dull, some UI elements show not quite as they're supposed to, and videos exhibit awful banding, blocking and ringing artifacts."
This is an accurate description of what we are all experiencing, and this test simply proves his hypothesis. I don't see how such a simple and objective test can be disputed as inaccurate.
The phone I have shows minimal black crush compared to the others three notes I had. But I just tried this test on my monitor and it barely shows 21 and 22. On my phone it shows to 1 and I thought my phone was almost perfect. Its ok I am very happy with the one I got until if any fix comes.
Mad as Pete
What does Samsung have to say about this? Are they aware of the issue? Are they working on a fix? Will it be fixed on the new ICS Galaxy suite update? Do we have to wait for AT&T to get fix from samsung and then wait another 4 months for AT&T to send it out us? Is AT&T aware of the issue? Has anyone told PhoneArena, Android Police, or contacted the Press and Media? Should I justt return my Note and never buy Samsung again? This makes me really mad the N7000 was released back in Oct and has this issue and it still has not been addressed? We spend $650 for a phone because of the big display and it has black clipping?
When I open up the test screen using the browser, the resulting image looks pretty good with the gradual black fade to nothing. but using quickpic and gallery, it shows the clipping. What's the difference?
