[Q] Security settings not working - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, new member here but have been cruising xda website for awhile now since rooting/modding my Atrix. Nothing too serious.....root.....few minor mods......faux 1.3 OC kernel......original GB rom.
I tried using the new 1.45 OC kernel and it soft bricked my phone. I used ROM Manager to recover ROM. I also used Titanium Backup 'free version' to reinstall apps etc.
Problem is I wiped app/system data in Titanium Backup and now 'NO' security settings work at all......neither screen lock, PIN, pattern, password. Worse part of this is losing my finger print security....loved it! I tried everything.....deleting finger print profile......pull battery.....wipe Dalvik Cache........etc.
Anyone know how to restore security options on my phone? Maybe I should just tkae the plunge and load The Dark Side ROM.......

Try flashing another ROM (i.e. Dark Side as you suggested) and see what happens. Can't hurt.

upgrading to latest build

Pretty simple question, i want to upgrade to the latest build by mik. Will this basically wipe everything that isnt on my SD card ? i.e. everything on my desktop, all my settings, all my apps etc.
thanks.
Yes, you will have to wipe everything...
If you want, you can backup your data with apps like "Titanium Backup" or something like those...
U will lost all ur settings,sms,contacts,apps..nd u will lost ur data in sd bcoz u hv to do partition for aps2sd..Its recommrnded to do backup of all ur apps, contacts, sms, nandroid before flashing
oh ok. so ill install apps2sd, move all my apps across, backup contacts and what i can with titanium , flash.
what is this google sync business with contacts ??
so i just flashed to the latest, and its booted back in, and everything is still on my desktop ? like nothing got erased.
i did a full batch titanium backup. did it automatically restore everthing ? even my desktop settings ?? im lost

Haha so luckily you got me and my patience on your thread lol and you questions are simple yeah but not short to answer!
For your question, yes! flashing any rom will exactly wipe EVERYTHING on your phone.
BUT IF YOU ARE UPGRADING FROM OLDER VERSIONS OF MIK'S 2.3 ROM, it will NOT wipe anything except your google/facebook accounts information.
By the way, for the manual action of "wiping", it depends what android version you are at.
If you are using Froyo 2.2 NOW, yes wipe everything on the list of your custom recovery.
If you are using Gingerbread 2.3 NOW, then you dont have to wipe anything except [cache] and [dalvik cache]. <- You must wipe these two!

I dont get what you mean by "install apps2sd". But whatever you shouldn't do that before flashing a rom. If you mean the Non-froyo App2SD+ (What the hell is non-froyo a2sd?), you should flash it AFTER you have flashed the rom in order to let it activate in the new rom.
Yes. backup all the things with titanium is necessary.
For the google contacts syncing. It is a service provided by Google and it is for you to sync the contacts between your Gmail and your phone. So you can view all your contacts anywhere. You can sync your contacts to gmail and then after rom flashing, the contacts are gone. Simply login back to gmail with the newly flashed rom and then click auto-sync. All of your contacts will be back after a couple of minutes.
But remember one extra point, its sort of a new feature in gingerbread but BE SURE TO UNTICK THE OPTION OF "BACKUP MY DATA ETC TO MY GOOGLE ACCOUNT" after you login your gmail with android 2.3. Why? It actually doesn't backup your data (well for me, i couldnt see it anywhere) but DUPLICATES YOUR MESSAGES WITH NO REASON!

IF YOU ARE UPGRADING FROM ANDROID 2.2 FROYO
NO. After you flash, every single thing will be GONE COMPLETELY. You will have to perform a titanium batch restore to get everything back in order.
IF YOU ARE UPGRADING FROM ANDROID 2.3 GINGERBREAD (older versions of mik's rom)
Then Yes everything is still on your "desktop" (I think you meant launcher) and ALL SETTINGS WILL REMAIN. However in some cases, home screen widgets will have problems and you will have to place them again. Information in widgets (such as your city for weather widgets, your to-do-list widgets) are NOT BE ABLE TO BACK UP USING TITANIUM OR ANY OTHER METHODS. So make sure you have written down what you have wrote in your widgets!
And finally if you have missed or made mistakes in any step, dont panic! You can always restore your phone back with KDZ UPDATER (Picture guide in this link)!
And when you are using mik's rom, and you would like to have a try on franco.Kernel which provides excellent performance, dont forget to discuss them in the thread The fantastic combination of mik_os' CM7 and franco.Kernel!!
Hope I was clear enough and if any parts of my post have helped you, dont forget to hit the thanks button at the bottom of my post
Good luck! Happy playing with mik's roms!
Thanks alot, makes it clearer.
I will definitely put francos kernel on, the phone still could do with some imporvement in performance.
next thing i need to learn about is the launcher. is it essentially just the UI ?

erm for the launcher its totally simple - ur phone can have multiple launchers, but you usually only use one. and they gives you the app drawer and some screens for you to place your shortcuts and widgets. how are they? what are their performances? differ on different launchers. they all can simple be found on the market, and after installation you will be able to choose the one you want to use, by clicking the home button.
ADW launcher and Launcher Pro being the most famous ones and you may try GO Launcher as some people are using and appreciating it too.
new users if i have given some help you know what to do and happy androiding.

[Q] Titanium Backups Batch function not working

I have always used ROM Manager to do everything, but seeing that might not be the best way to do things..I have been having some other problems with restoring, and talked about it on another forum, but can't post the link here yet.
So, my nightlys said it is time to upgrade, so I am going to completely back everything up with TB, and fire it all up to dropbox. All of my system settings are 100% the way I want them... I also clicked the beta migration option in the preferences, hoping that would help me.
Step 1 - Backup all user apps + system Data
Step 2 - Sync to Dropbox
Step 3 - Boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery, and do everything manually, not through ROM Manager
Step 4 - Clear cache and Dalvik
Step 5 - Run zip from SD Card
This time, it seemed like everything went as planned. When I started the phone back up, all the apps were in the same spot, and wallpaper was the same. Although, the first time, when the screen timed out, I couldn't turn it back on. Pulled the battery, and all is working fine now.
Step 6- went into TB and did a batch restore of all apps and data, but only clicked the green items. From reading somewhere else, it is only wise to do the green items, not the red, so that is what I did. Then reboot for all to take effect.
This is where I am confused. None of my data is restored. For example, I use K-9 Mail, and the settings aren't restored by the batch. But, if I go to that app, and hit the restore data, then it restores it fine. So, for me to do all my apps, the batch function isn't working, I have to go through and do 15-20 apps manually.
So, what am I doing wrong here? Why isn't the batch operation working properly for me?
Edit - Something else I noticed that didn't restore properly was any of my ring tones. Not a huge deal, but I thought might be worth mentioning in this dilemma.
So I assume you are on CM7 as you refer to nightlies.
You say that you wipe cache/dalvick cache and install. Then when you reboot all your apps are in the right place?
Then why on earth would you want restore your apps on top of the existing apps with TB? Maybe that is causing the problem. AFAIK upgrading with a nightly shouldn't touch your installed apps.
Did you check the app settings before restoring with TB?
As for the ringtones, I always had that problem when using CM7, just got used to fixing them after installing each nightly.
Hope this helps.
What version of TB are you using? I was having a similar problem doing restores on v3.9.0.1 and was having problems doing batch recovery with my SGS2. The status bar would come up but wouldn't successfully finish. I then upgraded to 4.0.0.0 and everything seems to work.. might give that a try if you're using an older version.

Yes, sorry, I am running CM7, but using the nighties.
As far as the apps, that's why I think I am doing something wrong. Last time was the first time everything was there, every other update, it was like I was starting off with a new phone. No app, no data, nothing. A brand new fresh start.
I will try it again in a few minutes and hope for the best..
Thanks for helping out with this one..

I am currently using the Pro, 4.0.2. It just seems that I have to refresh all the data for each app by themselves, but all at once won't work.
Upgrading my nightly now, so keeping my fingers crossed that it will work.

[Q] Weird touch issue.

Hello all,
For some apps and menus I cannot access the bottom of the screen. Just a small enough part that makes it impossible to select any options or buttons. Accept or decline for example or Settings when hitting the menu button on the launcher screen.
As I mentioned it doesn't always happen.. When on the launcher screen I CAN access the quick bar at the bottom of the screen. It also doesn't happen while I am in the settings menu as I can also access About Phone.
When I first started to notice it happening I was using ROMeOS3D v134 So I tried flashing Mwakious3D 3.0. Before Flashing I factory reset and formatted everything but SD Card in ext4 recover.
It seems odd that it only occurs for some apps and menus which makes me want to rule out Hardware, however reflashing a new FW with a full wipe didn't fix the issue either.. When Flashing, I did no backup/restore except google's own account app backup/reinstall.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

hmm.. no one has any ideas? i was searching the web a bit and saw some people with the attrix had a similar problem due to problems with their pds partition.. is it possible one of my partitions is messed and needs fixing?
Perhaps make a NANDROID backup and run the Superwipe utility and flash a super stable ROM? One based on a official non-leaked RUU (Which would mean Gingerbread) and see if the problem persists? (Perhaps just flash a complete stock rooted ROM?)
And don't begin restoring any apps or old data or flash stuff on the "stock" rom, just take it as it is and test out the errors you were having in your "normal" rom.
I'd like to put extra emphasis on "Superwipe" instead of normal wipe in recovery, as Superwipe also wipes certain partitions that a normal wipe doesn't cover I believe.
If the problem persists, then I can only be led to believe it's a HW issue..

[Q] Factory reset question

I am rooted on stock touchwiz rom. I have done a few tweaks such as the swapping of internal memory for external, editing some CSC feature files to enable the sound on/off menu in camera. I've enabled the multi-view for all my apps and have added the wifi toggle my notification dropdown.
After not having an issue prior, I noticed the other day Instagram force closes every time I try to open it and does so immediately. I have deleted and re installed many times and several different ways, i.e with Titanium Backup. I haven't been able to find any real suggestions on how to fix it, so was thinking of doing a factory reset. I have backed up everything using Titatanium and plan on using that to restore my phone back to how it was.
I know I wont lose root after the factory reset, but will I lose all those other tweaks that I mentioned in the beginning? And will restoring from a Titanium backup just re-apply the problem that caused Instagram to force close thus putting me back to square one? Has anyone else had any trouble with Instagram crashing?
Thanks in advance guys!

I don't use Instagram so I can't comment on experiencing crashing from it. I can say that I've had some issues restoring apps with Titanium Backup. More often than not though, when I re-installed, the problem was solved. If you do a factory reset, you'll lose any adjustments you've made, except for adjustments that are included in the rom firmware itself.
Based off of the tweaks you listed, you may just want to check out Bean's Revision 4 (flashable using TWRP). Just make sure you've unlocked your bootloader. Bean's REV 4 has the option to automatically run all of the tweaks you added manually. It's actually a really nice, clean rom.

Hey thanks for the insight. I know I should probably unlock my bootloader. After coming from a Nexus, I got burned out from flashing ROMs and keeping up with the latest builds so with this phone I told myself I'm gonna try and keep it stock, which progressed to just rooting, then doing more and more tweaks. I'm a sucker for tinkering.

[Q] Forgot lock pattern. Looking for a way to backup messages before factory reset.

Hi there,
I've got a tiny problem with my One Max. It's updated to latest OTA and not rooted/unlocked.
I usually use my fingerprint to unlock it and I forgot the pattern to unlock it manually. As you can imagine, I wrongly tried to unlock it with my fingerprint 4 times, so it's asking for pattern unlock. I've tried two patterns I usually use and it didn't work, now I'm panicking and have tried countless other combinations I might've used.
What can I do, other than trying to find a right pattern?
I have no way to access my SMS storage and no backup to speak of, so formatting the phone is not an option.
EDIT:
I have seen this topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-max/help/help-please-t2879590
And it does not include any viable options. What I need is _at least_ to install some kind of app from google play that will backup all my data to google drive so I can safely factory reset the phone.
I have active data connection, sync and wifi, so now I'm struggling to find an option to import/export SMS in pushbullet.
EDIT:
I seen this article:
http://trendblog.net/how-to-bypass-android-phone-lock-screen-pattern-pin-password/
most of the options are not available in lollipop, but there was one that mentioned flashing custom zip (and had direct link to file from XDA forums atachment) - so two more questions: one - can I root the phone without unlocking it and two - can such zip be applied to lollipop one max?
EDIT:
After careful investigation in the net I came to conclusion that I will have to factory reset the phone. The only thing stopping me is my sms archive and whatsapp history.
Can anybody tell me what does HTC Backup actualy backup and if there's any application I can push from the market that will allow me to backup (and possibly restore later) that data without touching the phone?
@skybleu
If you were rooted you could always try deleting the HTCLockScreen.apk or renaming it to .apk.bak
But in this case seems like you will have to factory reset.. HTC Backup will backup your messages and keeps a list of apps installed on your phone so if you were to restore it would download the list of apps that it had installed at the time of the backup.

It's not that bad, I have access to internal storage via airdroid, so at least whatsapp archive and my photos will survive.
I'm worried about SMS though.
Say, about the idea - one, should it be possible even? I'd assume this would lead to crash, instead of unlocking.
Also, is there any option to root the phone without unlocking it? gold sd card, push exploit, sth?
