The built in video app works fine for me, but I prefer RockPlayer.
The built in player also works fine for me. But it really only supports MP4 video files, if I understand correctly. I use Handbrake and the iPod Touch preset to encode for my Nook.
That said, I actually use Act 1 Video Player because it has the nicest 'library' view that groups by folder.
I use yxplayer, no need to encode... plays avi files like a charm.
The built-in player outperforms RockPlayer, which has some audio sync issues.
I use the iPod Touch preset in Handbrake, but I bump the resolution up to 720 x ???, turn off Anamorphic, and set a constant video bitrate of 800kbps and an audio bitrate of 80kbps.
Works well for me. Speed Racer looks gorgeous on this screen.
from my very very few experiments, i concluded that once videos are converted to mp4 (h.264 / AAC) any player is the same (uses the hardware decoding).
with videos in different formats its likely that there will be problems
i agree with nooter on using handbrake's iphone preset modifying the bitrate setting it around 800kbps (for animated movies it can be lower 600kbps should be ok). About altering the size of the movie, only for reducing it (remember the max lines in landscape is 600)
rock player works if u have the latest universal player but you need to install add block because even if you pay for it you cannot activate it
I've found that all the players avail still play back xvid/divx avi's really choppy, going to have to give handbrake a try to take advantage of the hardware decoder...
I was just able to install vplayer from the market (a few days ago it wouldn't install)... some audio sync issues but there are some cache parameters to tweak... anybody had any luck?

Same experience with playing divx/xvid files, choppy sound and 21-24fps video playback. Take that same video and run it through handbrake to convert to .mp4 and it runs great.
Where is the built in video player located? I cannot seem to find it anywhere..
I agreed with vplayer beta from the market place. It's free. It'll play most video formats. I've tested 480p and 720p mkv and both play with high speed setting. 720p mkv video is slow but 480p play fine. It's great with cifsmanager and mounted shared videos.

So, what filetype does that create? What is the Extension? MP4 or M4V? Also, are there any other settings, other than the ones listed above that you use?
I am asking these questions because I am having issues with movies encoded this way playing in the default player. It doesn't recognize the video, so it will not play.
Also, VPlayer plays them, but there is a definite audio lag once you forward to about mid-movie.
Also, as an aside, I am converting ISO files (Direct DVD rips) using HandBrake. That is how I am generating these files. I do change the extension to mp4 from handbrakes default (m4v i think).

There is no shortcut in the App drawer (or Gallery) for the stock video player....I just click the video file (in whatever file manager you use or the Nook Library My Files tab).
Personally I use Act 1 Video player as it will present a list of videos on the SD card and Nook. Although for some reason it list videos on the Nook twice.

The Act 1 app seems to be the only one that can properly sort videos. I tried the trial version, and it seems to work great, but as intuitive as the in-video touch areas may seem, I just can't get my brain dialed in to use them in practice. I think the built-in NC player works just fine, it's the video file/folder sorting that's nearly impossible to navigate once you have 20 or 30 vids on there along with a few thousand photos.
The media sorting options on Android are surprising lacking, or I just can't seem to find methods to deal with 32 gigabytes of media on this device.
I just did a bunch of conversions from some 720p MKV's. I converted them using Xilisoft video converter.
The settings I used were:
720x420
800k bitrate
44.1khz 128kbps audio
H.264 codec MP4 extension
Plays flawlessly with Rockplayer. No desync on fastforward.
The Built in player IS the best
After many attempts and reboots, I have determined that the Built-in Media player is the best player for videos encoded as specified earlier in this thread...
I tried Rock, and VPlayer beta, but both had very bad audio sync issues.
The Built-in player played all my encoded videos flawlessly. The wife LOVED watching Salt on the Nook during our road-trip. The only downside is the audio on the nook--hardly any volume. Easily solved by a good set of earphones. We are very pleased with the nook.

Check out mVideoPlayer. I haven't tried it on the Nook, but its perfect on my Galaxy S phone.
As for encoding, go with handbrake. Choose the Apple TV preset. Set resolution to custom and width to 800 (handbrake should automatically choose the correct height based on asperity ratio of source material). Set the video quality to constant at 60% (70% is the max you want for HDTV). Under audio, select the appropriate track and select aac with Prologic II or stereo as the encoding. Use the MP4 extension as to avoid issues with different t players.
You can get way more detailed on settings beyond that. It just depends on the material and the playback device. Those settings should get you outstanding video on the Nook. May have to scale back a little if the video is choppy.

After much trial and error, I have to agree with previous poster who said the best player is the built-in player with mp4 files created with the settings mentioned. The other players all had issues with controls and added nothing if the file was formatted as described.
I also had a lot of trouble getting any player to play any file at first. I think installing some of the other players added some necessary codecs. Then after a reboot, everything started to work. Hope that helps someone else avoid some frustration.
Despite a few trials like this, I love this tablet! Thank you xda devs!

I'm running the free version of Rock Player. It's not exactly the cheapest app out there on the Android market, but if it works well, not a big deal.
Whenever I choose an mp4 video that I've encoded at 848x360, for example, Rock Player seems to default the widescreen video to this resolution, assuming the Nook Color scaled resolution is 1024x600, which means that a high quality widescreen rip at the smaller resolution will default launch with black bars around all 4 edges.
I noticed that the video display resizing has 3 modes,
(1) the default mode as mentioned above
(2) zoomed mode which fills the whole screen, stretching as required
(3) scaled mode which allows the widescreen video to stretch to the left and right edges properly, while maintaining a proper aspect ratio.
So the simple question is, how do I configure Rock Player to default launch video files in the mode (3) mentioned above?
What resolution must i change 1080p video to to run it fullscreen HD on the Atrix, I tried 540x960 but that doesnt run full screen, and importing full 1080p, unsuprisingly, runs very slowly.

What app are you using to play the videos? Also, in order to play HD videos smoothly, Tegra 2 requires Baseline profile H.264 whereas most HD videos use High profile H.264. These videos have to be re-encoded as baseline in order for playback to be smooth.
EDIT: Do you mean you get black bars on the top and bottom? What about the left and right?
im using MoboPlayer, and am getting black lines all around, so i guess its not the wrong ratio. what would re-encoding videos require on windows? i use handbreak on my mac, but i dont currently have that on me. also what would the highest resolution be that the atrix could handle well, it seems a shame to watch films like Transformers with a low quality image

Handbrake is on Windows and Mac so you're good to go there.
Using moboplayer to play.. mkv's? If you re-encode the video like above, you can use the stock video player which I guess is just called "Gallery" or "Video Player"... Otherwise, MX Video Player is capable. Both of these are able to use Tegra's hardware acceleration. I still get some stuttering on MX Video Player though so I recommend just using Gallery.
i have the TF101, which unfortunately only plays 720p and 1080p files very choppy (someone told me you you re-encode them for the tf101 but meh).
do you guys think the prime will bw able t play such MKVs with no issue? im talking about normal 72ßp/108ßp mkvs which you can dl all ovwer the net, not specially encoded ones.

Plus in the what would you like to know about the prime thread a member already tested this as he has a prime already. It was mkv and 1080p. Played flawlessly. He made a video on it. He has at least 3 you tube vids reviewing the prime hands on.

tegra3 has the ability to play high profile 1080p videos, the prime should do just fine with pretty much anything you can throw at it...
Tegra 3 may support 1080p and all, but question is, if default video player, that uses HW decoding, supports MKV format. My iPad 2 supports all kinds of HD, as long as it's in proper format. MKVs play very choppy if I use a player for any format other than iPad supported.

Default player doesn't even matter. Even if a format not supported, there are always 3rd party players which will. The member here that has a prime used a 3rd. Party player to play that 1080P MKV file. Which it played perfectly. No default player in any tablet plays all formats. That's the great thing about getting a good 3rd. Prty player that will.

default player plays the video fine, but for some reason theres no sound.
bsplay, mxplayer and rock player are all HD accelerated players.
When someone goes to play with a demo at gamestop, they should take with them a micro sd that has a high profile 1080p mkv and see how that plays on the prime. They should add other video players on the card and install them and see which one plays better with the high profile mkv. Yes I know that reviews have said this or that, but having someone that is not part of any review circle would be grateful to many.
I would do this but I'm not popping my head in that gamestop store after getting that dump.

I wonder how Prime will play avi files. I find that playing avi on TF101 is fine but the quality is very bad - I get a lot of artifacts - like it had a grid of dots over it. Probably because players use simplified decoding algoritms? Or maybe it's because Tegra2 lacks NEON? I also think it should be able to send 1080p signal to the screen even if the video is below 1080p (and different than 720p) - otherwise it will be scaled twice - once to 720p by the Prime and second time by the monitor itself - it will probably degrade quality. (well, but on the other hand I can just stick to 720p and 1080p videos which should be great)
Tegra3 does have NEON so no worries.

I had this same problem with a 1080p .MOV file off of my DSLR as well as a MKV file. I haven't tried mxplayer, but I will when I get home. I've been looking forward to being able to play MKV files without having to convert or manage with iTunes. Like Sinatra sang, "I'll do it my way!"
somehow I can't copy mkv to my asus prime... it keeps saying explorer error and it restarts the explorer
I have been playing around with my Prime for the last 5 days, especially in regards with video. Here are my findings:
- Not all files can be played back with HW decoding.
- mkv containers does not seem to be playable in the default player, only 3rd part, like mx video player.
- 720p mkv plays back almost flawlessly with some initial stutter in SW, 1080p does not.
- mp4 and avi seem to be HW accelerated by mx video player.
I am not entirely sure on what seem to be the problem. My initial reaction is that it is a problem with the container formats. However, I have not checked whether the videos, that I have tried to play, have some exotic encoding settings, which the software controling the HW decoder, does not recognize.
Perhaps mkw HW acceleration support broke in one of the updates I received, when I booted my prime for first time monday.
What are your experiences, especially with 1080p?

The first three high profile 720p MKV files I tried with BSPlayer worked flawlessly. Same videos will not play at all on my Xoom.

Will do when I get home. I will also try the same videos on my SGSII for comparison.
My hunch is that the hw decoder refuses to decode the video stream. Perhaps this is controlled entirely by the android system and not the video player app.
Hey guys, just got a few 720p high profile mkv files which reviews claimed could be played with the stock video player. All 3 files currently do not. Dice player works in trial but when i try to buy it gives me not found in the market. I'd rather usethe built in player personally but has anyone else had any luck either way?

Or one of the reviews did a blu ray rip and it played great so I'm guessing I'm missing something, an update broke it or if will be fixed in ics. Is also possible they just need hardware drivers for tegra3. I'm optimistic, is launch week, well have awesome devs, it'll get sorted eventually. Even software decode stutters just a bit ( I'm a video perfectionist). Also peeved at xda app FCs but again, brand new device. Just let me know if anyone (particularly those who didn't update) has any better luck.
Unbelievable , this still not resolved after the Tegra 2 debacle.
i've played a couple mkv's just fine with the stock player and mx player. the only issue i've had with them is if i skip around, the video never picks back up, works fine in software though.
but if i just watch the movie through without skipping around, it plays perfectly.
as you can see here ICS has added support to the Matroska format, so hopefully the default player will be handling it smoothly in ICS.

How were these files encoded? Because in order to take advantage of hardware decoding a file has to meet a certain standard. If it deviates even a tiny bit, it will not work.
Go and Download BSPlayer lite from the market. It has the same funtionality like Diceplayer. Tegra 3 can nearly play all 1080p vids.

Well its h264 high profile, which tegra 3 plays. Tegra 3 isn't picky, as long as its less than a 42mbps bitrate the hardware will handle it. The only standard it must meet is 1080p and less and 42mbps or less in h264 anyways. For tegra 3, i'm sure software is the issue.
Files came from my media server which are also hw accelerated with an nvidia graphics card via vdpau. never even have to check, just always plays (h264 anyways)
Again, i'm sure they'll fix it eventually,I know the chip does it, still annoying., its why I never bought tegra 2. And for those suggesting software decode, battery life PLUMMETS and the performance we would have with hw decode would be as good or better than blu ray with no stutter.

Prime will handle highprofile mkv just fine if you use a other media player like mxplayer, diceplayer The problem when you can't play with the stock player is that it for the most times can't handle the audio.
Just give them some time to update there players to full Tegra3 support. The device have only been out some days and I think the developers also would like to have a device to test on.

Have you tried a straight MP4 (H264/AAC) with standard Android player? You do realize that it's not just the video track that kicks the (3rd-party) player into HW or SW mode, right? Subtitles, for instance, will invoke SW mode. Chapter tracks will also probably cause SW.
As much as you sound you know, then you should also know that not every downloaded video is the same. If you have problems, SOP is first to provide specs (MediaInfo works), second is to provide a sample, third is to specify environment (which player you've tried, and their respective performance). Only noobs go "my vids don't work, now what?"
With the non-info you've provided, all you get is guesswork.
What do you mean by " files came from a media server"? If you are streaming to the device, expect skipping playback because WiFi can't handle hi-bitrate 1080p.
I have no issues running 720p or 1080p hi profile (locally) on my Transformer Prime in Dice player, even with DTS and multiple audio tracks.
people need to realise 3rd party players need to be optimised for tegra 3 for hardware acceleration. its not to do with type of file, as long as it does not have very high bitrate.
Everyone has to understand, that MKV is just a container. You can put almost anything into this container so therefore it is unlikely that the hardware can decode everything that can go into a MKV container.
The main thing about the Kal-El SoC, it is the first chip that can decode h.264 High Profile video. To see the supported codecs that Tegra 3 can decode in hardware see: http://www.nvidia.com/object/tegra-superchip.html
I've ripped hundreds of blu-rays. I've ended up using two sets of files.

Subtitles: Converted from the MKV

I spend most of the time make the archive format looking as good as possible for it's size. Most files come out to 4-7GB per movie. There are exceptions depending on the quality of the movie. Movies with lots of noise in them come out to be much larger then one that is very clean. Computer Generated movies will come out to 3-4GB using CQ 18. The Prime should decode these just fine.
The mobile size I use for under powered devices and also to have as many movies as possible for it's size. qHD actually ends up looking very nice for it's size when down converted from blu-ray. A two hour movie comes out to be about 1GB. This way I can have on average 60-70 movies on 64B microsdxc card and about the same on the 64GB prime itself.

I know there seems to be some sort of issue with Tegra 2 chipsets not decoding video properly but I read that with the right codec and video players you can play 720p high profile MKVs/MP4s, how can I do that?
Also, does it matter what ROM I'm on? Like CM7 vs Stock MotoBlur? I'm on CM7 and I tried a few video apps and most face some sort of problem with 720p videos stuttering and whatnot.

That's one of the most important issue of the Atrix.
I can't play most of my HD anime videos fluently on my Atrix because the hardware doesn't support high quality HD mkv videos.
But I've heard the Samsung S2 does.... -.-
And that makes me angry!
Anyway if you not afraid of trying HD videos on your Atrix, you should try 'MX video player' and 'V player' (both need separate codecs).
Both are great but 'V player' is the only player which can show subtitles from mkv videos which I stream with my w-lan router from my external hard drive.

If you haven't yet, try MX Video player. It uses some software trickery and plays most if not all of my hd videos beside being the best video player in many aspects. I tested on the phone only so don't know what the output to an external monitor would be.
Don't forget to install the right codec and always toggle 'software fast mode' on the screen if videos get stuck. It also gives you the ability to zoom into the picture.

Not sure if it has problems with subtitles in certain containers... until now subtitles worked for me and their rendering is very pleasing.

I have both player and I personally prefer MX video player but the subtitles are missing if you stream your videos with mx.
V player can show the subtitles and that's why I prefer V player.
But for normal use I definitely prefer mx before visiting player.

I think this is a problem of the Tegra, High Profile videos not work with HW decoding, I have tryed MX player, but, all the times it loses sync or drop frames.
the temp solution for me is recode videos to Baseline profile in 720p

if they use HW decoding, but will be stuck on Baseline Profile again
The two players I have the most luck with are Dice and Mobo. Try them out.
