So, I've had a hell of a weekend with my Gtablet. I Decided to try out CM 7.0.3, but it got stuck on the word "Android" screen on first boot. I tried going back to Vegan 7 RC1 but it boot looped on first boot. I learned how to NVFlash back to stock, then installed 7.0.2 stable because from reading I thought maybe since I didn't have 7.0.2 installed the first time and upgrading to .0.3 was what caused my problem in the first place. It installed wonderfully, but when I tried to installed 7.0.3 it got stuck on the word "Android" screen again. I tried to NVFlash again, but it boot looped. I tried the NVFlash format open to erase everything, but it still boot looped on stock. Then I found that I needed to partition again, so I installed CW from sdcard2 and partitioned to 2gb/0. This time NVFlash worked great, but the OTA 3588 update wouldn't installed. I manually installed 3588 and that's where I'm at right now.
Also, before installing any new roms I always wipe data, cache, and dalvik through CW.
Sorry about all that, I just wanted to get it off my chest
Before I install a new rom, I'm curious about something. In this sticky http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=865245 it says to mount /system and /data in CW before installing the rom. None of the other write ups say to do this, and I was wondering if it's necessary?
Also, do you all wipe data, cache, and dalvik before AND after installing roms?
I'm just looking for some tips so I don't have to do all that NVFlash crap over and over again.
Thanks!!!
Having similar trouble
I have been trying to install Cyanogenmod 7.0.3 - I have been running VEGAn Tab 1.0b5.1.1 for some time.
I wiped every thing possible; cache, data, system, Dalvik...I formatted data and system...I tried repartitioning to 4096 and 256, then back to 2048 and 0....
All I get on install is the Viewsonic splash screen. It is a bit strange. I can wipe and reinstall VEGAnTab without issue. It seems that I can run Froyo based ROMs but not Gingerbread based ROMS...
Any thoughts?
I'm not pro, but think this might help:
I think Vegan 5.x is built off Android 2.2 while Vegan 7.x and Cyanogen 7.x are built off of Android 2.3. From everything I've read this weekend it seems that anything that was built off of 2.3 doesn't play well until you NVFlash back to stock and update to stock 3588. I think it has something to do with the way stock partitions stuff, but I can't remember for sure. So, if I were in your shoes, I'd do this:
1) repartition to 2048/0 in CW
2) follow this guide to NVFlash it back to stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=861950
2a) the guide is pretty easy to follow, just make sure your tablet is fully charged in case you have problems like I did. Also, make sure when you unzip the files into the NVFlash folder that they all end up in the same folder. When I did it one of the zips extracted a NVFlash folder inside the NVFlash folder, so when I double clicked on the .bat file to start everything it didn't work.
2b) Optional, in that guide there's a link to this post which wipes everything out on your tablet using NVFlash. If you decide to do this, do it before step 2.
3) sign into wifi and install the over the air 3588 update. Mine failed so I had to use this guide to install it manually.
4) install clockwork mod and roms the way you normally would. (this is the step I'm on, but I'm waiting for a reply just so I don't have to do all that crap again ) I think it'll work just fine though.
gl
It might be the bootloader
i remember having a hell of a time with this. i had a 2.3 rom on my gtab and decided to start clean and i used NVflash and suddenly no 2.3 rom would install. the thing i did different was use the Full wipe zip file that erased ALL partitions, because nvflash doesnt do that on its own. try flashing this (replace nvflash files with whats in the zip file. DO NOT INSTALL WITH RECOVERY), which should flash you to the 1.2 bootloader. i dont claim to be an expert but its worth a try and you can always NVflash back. also you might want to check out the NVflash post again they updated the files used.

jmeuphonium, did you find answers to your 2 original q's ?
1 - [Q] Should I mount /system /data?

i'm having a hard time myself...i nvflash and boot to stock Vegan RC1, or CM Harmony Stable 7.0.3, very well...but when i load pershoot's latest kernel, it falls apart, and i get wifi error!
here's what i do after initial ROM install (Vegan RC1 or CM7) -
-power down tablet
-boot into CWM
-install zip from sdcard - choose downloaded GB kernel (the zip file that is under this heading on pershoots blog - "ViewSonic Gtab/Malata Zpad (Gingerbread):" )
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache
-wipe Dalvik cache
-reboot system
don't know what i'm missing, but i'm indeed curious about your 2 questions, and i couldn't find a clear reference anywhere explaining this...any help from anyone will be greatly appreciated!! thanks!!
I just did the biggest F-Up of my flashing life. While following QBKing77's Rooting & CWM with unlocked, at approx 3:50, during the flashing of the root SYSTEM.img file, rather than that file, I used the wrong file to flash used an IMG file that was meant for cwm, which is a completely different task.
So now I am trying to get into fast boot and try to do it with correct SYSTEM.IMG, then to find out I never got it downloaded, the link was deadand now I can not find where to DL it from. I must've not been paying attention and got ahead of myself.
Anyone know where I can a mirror of the file found here. Its the first link in the root section labelled "moto-fastboot flashable /system image".
Am I screwed? Does anybody have a copy of that system.img file laying around. I can not find any mirrors. That is the only way I can see this getting fixed bc I can still go into fastboot mode.
ckeck this ????

Important files
Thank shabbypenguin for those
If you can get into rsd mode and connected/recognized in rsd lite you should be able to flash one of those sbf files and return to stock.
I read the instructions carefully! It said to put the oven on 350 degrees for 10mins but for some out of this world reason I put it on broil and let it cook for 20mins :/

LOL no kidding Custodian. I did get a laugh out of that.
Thanks CubanLuke & ShabbyPenguin. I did use RSDLite to flash the current sbf you directed me to, I can boot into the phone again. Thanks again.
Now as to how to proceed, I will have to unlock the bootloader again, np, but when I run into that very step where I broiled it, the rooting via speedboot.... would it be okay to root using AIO instead because I can not find the SYSTEM.IMG needed to follow along w/ the video using this method.
Can I just root a different method, then proceed on with CWM recovery, then flash rom from the video?

Thanks KTT. Okay, I'm back on track now. I am unlocked again, rooted as well. but I am not sure about 2 things. This will be my very first android rom flash and just coming from a big whoopsies, I just want to be sure.....
1) Format system: in cwm recovery, which option is that? I don't see "format system" in the main or advanced menu. Maybe its worded differently?
2) Flash ROM: I can only assume its either "Apply Update from SD" or Update from SD". Not sure which one though.

1) Format system is in the "mount" options. Although it's unneeded to flash a ROM. Personally I just wipe data/factory reset and then wipe cache and have zero issues. Others may tell you different though.
2) "Install .zip from SD Card" then select whichever .zip you're looking to install.

Okay well I am in some trouble again. successfully flashed an alpha cm7.1, but it didn't have market and the one i installed did not work so decided to flash to cm7.2 via CWM. When it booted I didn't really see anything change, later realized that maybe I was suppose to wipe/format in cwm first(idk).
So I decided to flash 198_7, same one that I used to restore back to stock earlier. But I did not get back to stock. The process was 100%, it told me to manually turn on the device, which was in rsd mode. So I unplugged, pulled batt, reboot. The phone now starts up until the pulsing Moto logo then screen goes black, then it loops.
In the process I lost CWM & unlocked. So trying to flash a ROM via cwm is no longer an option. Any thoughts?

Flashing the 198_7 sbf unroots and relocks, so you're back to square one.

Reboot into stock recovery, when you get the recovery logo thing push both volume up and volume down at the same time to get the recovery options. Then do a factory reset and it should boot for you. After that, root and unlock again. And you didn't have the Market because you forgot to install Gapps...

The reason cm7 didn't have the market is that you needed to flash gapps. Try doing a hard reset. http://www.hard-reset.com/motorola-photon-4g-hard-reset.html That should do it.
try the 154 sbf

i had the same problem i think and was going thru boot loops but some one told me to start into recovery when you try you get that ? android screen from there hold down volume up and down at same time then wipe phone booted up fine after that.
It worked like a charm. Thanks. I'm still very new to android and hate to admit it but will be running into problems like these again. The best way to minimize it for me is, not only follow certain directions correctly to get out of these binds, but to understand them.
- So theres an image of the stock ROM stashed away on the phone regardless? And it can be accessed only via the stock recovery? Because after I succeeded in flashing cm7.1, I did a factory reset once from settings>privacy and that restored me to a fresh CM7.1. The factory reset from settings>privacy and in CWM is the same, but both different from the factory reset via STOCK RECOVERY?
- Also what would be the correct method to go from one custom ROM to another? Would it be this? :
(in CWM)
- Format system
- Wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache/dalvik
- Reboot recovery
- Flash ROM
Or can I just jump to install from zip ?
- Also regarding SD Storage (internal), only holds storage files? So on any fresh ROM there shouldn't be anything in that partition relating to that new ROM yet right? So I can delete things without worry?
You should not have to reboot into recovery, once your wipes are complete, normally you can just flash your ROM of choice in the same recovery session.
Before I flashed anything I would make a backup with CWM so you don't have to keep rooting and unlocking. You can just restore your backup.

After flashing 198 7 sbf, all u need to do is flash derpunlock not go through oem unlocking, then reflash recovery.
Simple generic process for going between roms (assuming already unlocked + cwm recovery flashed; process may be different for some roms, always make sure to read directions, but this is the general concept)
1. Download rom (and gapps if necessary) and put on your sdcard
2. Boot into recovery and make a nandroid backup
3. You made a nandroid backup right?
4. Secure your nandroid backup (move it to your pc or something).
5. You know where your nandroid backup is right?
6. Wipe data/factory reset.
7. Install zip from sd (flash), choose the rom.
8. Reboot system.
At this point your rom should be all set. If for some reason you don't like it, simply boot into recovery and restore your nandroid backup. You can even make nandroid backups of various roms if you want to swap between them for whatever reason.
Want to make sure I've got the procedure down. I'm currently running the latest stock rooted (but not unlocked).
Let me know if this plan looks right or if you see problems or have recommendations...
Edit: Included two wipes as per Joker's instructions
1) Backup apps and data
2) Unlock
3) Install romracer's latest CWM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16654262&postcount=1)
4) Make backup (or two)
5) Boot into recovery
6) Go to Mounts + Storage -> Format system
7) After format, Wipe data / factory reset
8) Install CM9
9) Wipe data / factory reset again
10) Install CM9
11) Install gapps
12) reboot
Did I miss anything?
Should I then install the latest 1.40 OC kernel? Edit: Looks like no, custom kernel built in. Thanks roundeye
Last I knew, jokers cm9 had an oc kernal with it, but in either case don't install a blur/cm7 kernal on cm9.
As for your steps, double check the first post in jokers cm9 thread because I believe you have to flash twice or something along those lines to get cm9 set up properly with its installer/backup scripts. Otherwise looks good.

Awesome thanks... I did see something about flashing twice. On his post, he lists the steps as:
WIPE
then flash
wont boot
wipe and flash again.
also wipe between versions.
did i mention to wipe

So I guess I go all the way through step 8, then repeat steps 7 and 8 again? then do 9 and 10?
Here's Joker's explanation for needing two wipes:
there are scripts built into cm9 that copy certain gapps over to cache and then restores them to system. if you are coming from gingerbread this messes a few things up. so to fix we wipe system, data, and cache so the script cant work the first time around. then we wipe and flash again letting the script work.

I will be getting a Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 tomorrow and I am interested in installing the PACMAN ROM
However, the instructions are not clear for me since I am new to all this. I've downloaded the roms, gapps and kernal and now the instructions say to:
'Put the files on your device
Reboot into recovery
Wipe dalvik cache
Install the zips (or do adb sideload if you want)
Reboot'
Since I have no experience with android devices, I am not sure how to do these steps. I've tried searching on Youtube but there aren't any tutorials for SGP's. I am aware that I need to do a full wipe since I am going from GB to JB (so I need to delete data, dalvik, system and dbdata). It also says to do a backup if anything goes wrong, which I am not too sure how to do as well.
If someone could explain these instructions clearly to me, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

put your device in download mode (hold down power and volume down) and flash entropy's kernel with odin.
then you will have clockworkmod recovery, which you can boot into by holding power and volume up.
in clockworkmod, you can make a backup, wipe data, and install the rest of the stuff.
you could even do all of this without ever booting up the stock rom.
This is what I do/did...
I used this tutorial to flash CWM and root
http://m.androidauthority.com/galaxy-player-5-0-android-2-3-6-root-clockworkmod-recovery-116474/
Download SuperOneClick and
Download Odin. Follow tutorial.
Odin can be used to flash ROMs or kernels and to flash CWM.
Download the Pacman ROM and a kernel and put it on your External SD card.
Use ROM Manager from the play store to reboot into Recovery mode (easiest way) or volume up and power button at the same time as the Samsung flashes after you first boot your device.
From recovery mode you can wipe dalvik cache etc, but if this is a new device, you shouldn't have to factory reset or wipe cache (I think) If you're buying a used device, wipe and reset.
You're in recovery mode still, navigate to-
"Load zip from external SD card" and select it. Navigate to the Pacman zip and select it.
You navigate using the volume up and down buttons and select using the power button.
Navigate back to main screen in recovery mode and select Reboot System.
Do the same thing to flash a kernel. If the kernel has clockwork mod integrated, load the kernel first.
I use Xplore to move files around, it's quick and easy.
The reason ppl tell you to back up any data is, they have data they want to keep. If this is a new device, you don't have anything worth saving, such as contacts apps etc.

what exactly did you do in cwm?
did you install pac rom?
if not, try installing (using install zip from sdcard) it directly over gb, after doing a full wipe.
also install gapps the same way

I got up to step 7, but my device kept rebooting after that. So I went in CWM recovery by holding POWER and UP buttons and wiped my data and cache but it still kept rebooting.
And I can't flash any roms since I still haven't rooted the device. I couldn't use entropy's kernel because I have an INTL Galaxy Player.

Okay, but in the CM9 thread the first thing it says for installation is 'Make sure your device is ROOTED' and mine is not - so are you sure it will work? I just don't want to brick my device or anything, just got it today xD
to install cm9, boot into recovery, and go to mounts and storage, then select the mount usb storage (connect your usb cable to your computer first)
then copy a cm9 rom zip over (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1679957)
you should be fine
if something fails for some reason, try installing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1465144 via odin (put your device in dl mode).

yup, dont forget to wipe data, cache, dalvik, (look under mounts and storage) system, and dbdata (or datadata)
All this INTL and US device stuff just throws wrenches into everything. The link I posted says it's for INTL and US devices. Apparently not the case.
I have intl kernel on my US device and it works fine, not sure why the reverse isn't true. Weird.
I use the INTL kernel because I like the governors choices.

Yeah it sucks that Samsung made different devices for different regions...Makes no sense..
But yeah, I installed CM9 and when I selected to reboot my phone from the actual ROM it said 'Rebooting...' and now its been like this for 30mins or so... :| I guess I'll have to wait for the battery to drain or something, but as soon as it does I'll wipe data, etc and install PACMAN with the new kernel and gapps. Sucks that you can't take the battery out the phone, I don't think the phone is actually gonna reboot.
EDIT: NEVERMIND, I JUST SAW ONLINE THAT YOU CAN SWITCH IT OFF BY HOLDING DOWN THE POWER BUTTON AND HOME BUTTON...Yeah I'm totally new to Android and Samsung xD
Or you could hold the power and volume up buttons to go into Recovery mode and reboot from there.

I finally got it working yesterday evening, and I'm loving the new ROM! Thanks a lot for your time and effort guys, I really appreciate it
I have a sch-i500 that is rooted with cwm working.
I am very interested in running liquid smooth v 2.9 found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2245120
so I did a format, wiped the cache and davlik. when I installed the zip from external sd card the phone immediately gave me a screen for CWM v 6.0.3.3.
I can still navigate and restore old back ups but the phone does not go past the Samsung logo on the boot screen. Any advice is appreciated.
I was previously running stock 2.3.5 E09 if that helps

seems to be the best way for me to recover from this (looks like I flashed a non voodoo rom without removing voodoo) but I am unable to get the phone into download mode with or without the battery in the phone.
please help......(update) Alright, I am a moron. needed to have a powered usb port. on my way to recovery. thanks for having all this great info in one place.

Oh so close.
When coming from 2.3.x ROM you will need to flash the rom (liquid: or other 4.2.x) you will need to flash 2 more times...
The 1st flash get you into the new recovery only,,, as you found out.
2nd flash will pop up with an error message about incompatible partition and telling you to re-flash again,,,
So 3rd flash actually installs your new ROM
Then install a current/compatible Google gapps
.
Enjoy
.
Thank you, I am getting closer.
still on the second and third flash of the rom I get a satus 7 error which I think is a bootloader issue.
I have flashed the GBbootloader.tar through odid to no avail and am following Section:4 How to flash any ICS 4.0.x & 4.x.x JellyBean based rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1238070
anythoughts?

what does the error say besides status 7?
did you odin the CWM4 fixed for cm7 then install the ROM 3 times?
can you get a pic up for us to see?
just to be sure......using odin, I repartitioned with the pit, and flashed a E03 rom. rebooted the phone fine.
flashed the CWM4 fix for 7 and redid the GB bootloaders as well.
went into recovery and factory reset, wiped cache, and dalvik.
installed liquid-JB-v2.7-Official-fascinatemtd.zip this time first time took me directly to clockwork where I flashed again. prompted with install from sdcard complete. repeated and got same message.
factory reset, wipe, wipe and flashed gapps. Everything seems to have worked this time with the v2.7Official instead of 2.9. I will play with this for just a bit and probably try it again tonight with a fresh downloaded copy of v2.9. I really do appreciate your assistance and help and I would not have gotten this far without the forum.
update:
flawless installation of v2.9 since 2.7 was already installed. (installed via cloclwork mod recovery)
It was most likely an operator error that prevented me from installing 2.9 after E03. But I don't see the benefit of going back to recreate why it didn't work. Thanks again all is good and right.
