Discharge fully before charging for 8 hours again? - Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime

Should I let it turn off on me the most charge it charge at 15% ect?
Any suggestions?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk

I wouldn't let it turn off or go completely dead. just when really low. manual even states it takes a few charge cycles before battery reaches maximum/optimal capacity. I have the very detailed Prime manual on pdf. not that b.s. Few page booklet asus included in box. Theres a thread from early days of prime general section that a member linked it. The pdf manual is about 100 pages or so.

I also question the need to 1) charge for 8 hours the first time and 2) go through the full discharge cycles. I could be wrong, but I never can tell the difference even when I'm using two identical devices.

[Q] It's necesary that the first battery charge lasts 24 hs (Thats what they told me)

When I bought the P500, they tell me that I have to charge it for 24 hs... It's that true?
What!!! that's crazy, may be true, may be not. They didn't tell us, lets sue LG.
Just charge it until it reaches 100%, you don't want to overcharge.

The battery will not let you overcharge. And 24hrs is definitely crazy, it will be charged in 2-3 hours and will not charge any more after that.
wah charge 1day is too crazy
just charge it until full which around 2 to 3hourq
This is an old myth that had lived on from the days where cellphone batteries where made of Ni-Mh and not Li-Ion as today, unfortunately most cellphone stores employees have kept telling everyone from generation to generation to "charge the battery for 24 hours the first time".
What's actually true about Li-Ion batteries is that they will reach their full capacity only after the 3rd or 4th full cycle charge, so what's recommended is that for those first three charges the cellphone is charge up to full capacity and then let it drain completely and repeat the process (only for those first three charges).
Afterwards then it's not recommended to let the battery die completely, as it's better for the battery's health to keep it topped whenever you have a chance, and avoid as possible to let it go below 30%. But once a month a "full cycle" charge is recommended to keep the battery calibrated (that is doing a full charge and then let it die). In the case of Android phones we have the "Wipe Battery Stats" option on custom recoveries to better calibrate our battery during this process.
That's what experts advice for Li-Ion batteries, you can find reference about this on most laptop manufacturers website, on the battery care page for iPods/iPhones at the Apple.com site and at my favorite Battery University.

[Q] Battery Life

Hello, recently I read an article which explained on the topic "Battery Life"
http://sg.news.yahoo.com/blogs/upgr...s-laptop-batteries-last-longer-192456763.html
I was shocked when it said, "Every time you charge your battery, the total capacity of the battery is diminished. Originally it may have had a run time of 3.5 hours, but after a year it'll run out of juice at 3 hours, even on a full charge."
So here's the question, does leaving your phone charging throughout the night causes the battery to be diminished faster? Or will it have no effect and stays to 100% and take it as 1 full charge.

My friend have been doing overnight charging for a year and had no adverse effects.
Huge BS article. Not worth typing more via the phone.

My Prime's full charging on first use didn't take 8 hours it only took 3.

It was around 36% when I was able to access the battery meter following initial startup.
Only took 3 hours till full charge over USB to Wall outlet.
Is this because the USB to Wall outlet is faster charge, and that the 8 hours suggested in the manual is for USB to PC charge?
I don't have my prime yet however, you need to let it charge for 8 hours, even if its fully charged. This will condition your battery. Your manual also states to let it charge 8 hours.
Personally, I think the whole "charge for 8 hours" thing is bunk. No idea why ASUS recommends it, and I can't remember any other manufacturer ever recommending such a long initial charge. I think ASUS just does it to be sure people charge it completely before using.
I mean, seriously, if ASUS was that worried about it they wouldn't design the Prime to turn on when first plugged in. And, I imagine that once the battery hits 100% (signified by the green charging light), there should be a cutoff. So I'm not really sure what charging for 8 hours (or, yes, about 5 hours after it hits 100%) accomplishes.
another reason I love this tab so much. it can go from 0%-100% in 3 hrs. my Ipad takes more than double that time to get full charge. maybe not that long...lol but you know what I'm saying. this also may hold the title of fastest charging tablet.
thanks guys im going to finally go mobile then. Its even showing 100% too.

Every manufacturer recommends 8 hours AFAIK in their manual or support etc. This is to condition your battery and improve its lifespan. I've had a phone which I didn't charge for 8 hours on first charge, battery life completely screwed up within half a year.
Once it hits 100% you're good to go. After that it will stop charging for a bit then charge after a certain percentage drop. There will be no benefit to charging it after it hits 100%. With Li-Ion technology the whole battery conditioning thing is overblown anyways, these aren't old style NiCd or NiMH that need full draining and full charging everytime and storing with certain charge levels.

What is the best way to save the battery life, and made a charge lasting longer?
How long should we wait before recharging the Prime? I always wait until it reaches 20-25% before recharging.
I do this about every 2 days, and when I do not use it it's standby if short pause or shut down at night.
I saw a thread somewhere in the forum but could not find it.
I do not use +IPS and brightness is about 20-25...
Not gaming, just surfing and testing Skype with WiFi (BT is not good with WiFi) so it's off
Any help we good suggestions?
Thanks
Bimbobo
My charging habits are:
To keep the battery healthy, keep it cool, I almost never use the tablet while charging off the wall and always turn it off. I've checked the charger brick temp with an IR temp gun and the brick stays 10 to 15 degrees cooler while charging when my Prime is off. This will save the charger.
I usually wait until I am almost drained, usually anywhere from 1 to 20%. With lithium ion batteries there is no "memory" that develops so no worries there. Temperature is the mail killer of Li batteries. You can charge it any discharge state, again Li batteries don't care. I did an experiment and when the Prime is over 95% Even if you put it n the wall charger it doesn't charge. Once it drops below 95% it starts charging. Remember, this s MY Prime, your and everyone will be slightly different depending on the battery and how the software and hardware interact to provide battery conditions (temperature and %).
The dock changes the equation since it probably charges the Prime and a lower current then the wall charger so you can use it while charging. I don't have the dock so I cannot confirm this though. The Prime will charge of the PC USB but ALOT slower and the Prime has to be turned off
This is the way I do it. Everyone is different though.
Thanks,
I always shut down before charging, but it turns on on its own.
Always use the charger, never USB/PC
Yes I wait until 20%.. Temperature, well I never noticed an issue
The house is warm about 21 C, and I never use it in cars or outside.
The dock is not used too much, only few time, and even full charged it seems to drain pretty fast not in use.
I just ask because I can see that WiFi, brightness and standby are main cause for draining.
I cannot measure how long it lasts, and it's not an issue.
The question was just becaus a charge every 2 day.. normally is not a good way to preserve the battery.. But I am ignorant about this matter.
Charging time does seem to vary a bit. I would just charge your prime based on your needs. Li batteries have no memory, so charge it when it needs it. If you do leave your prime in the car, let your prime either warm up or cool down (or in other words, reach room temperature) before connecting to your charger.

First time charging rule

Hi everyone!
I'm getting my prime and dock delivered today, and I can't wait!
(32gb gray, tiger direct, pre-ordered 11/25)
I have a question on the charging it 8 hours rule before using it for the first time.
I'm okay doing it, if that's what manufacturers say will prolong battery life.
(Anyone didnt do this?)
So I've read the only way to charge the dock is to attach the two together and charge it as one unit.
If that's the case, do I charge both for 8 hours, or does it have to be longer because its combined?
Thanks in advanced!

I think you should fully charge your battery.
When I got mine I didnt charge it fully and had terrible battery life, after maybe 10 charge-discharge cycles I'm having much better battery life.
Concerning the 8 hour initial charge: I didn't do it. I charged it until it was at 100%, applied the updates and after they were successful i unplugged my prime. If it says its full it is full. Thats how i see it. I'm not a battery tech or anything but to me it seems strange that it would make the battery way worse if i didn't charge it for 8 hours. As far as i can tell right now (had my third charge last night) the battery is fine and i get the expected runtime. Mine made it two days without recharging (with about 3-4 hours of hd video playback each day).
Btw: In my (german) manual it says that i should always charge the prime 8 hours or more but why should i if it is full after 3-4 hours? If this makes my battery die in 3 instead of 3.5 years screw it.
I always, always break in my batteries for any devices and I've always done it the same way. I have never ever had a single bad experience with shortened battery life span or the battery not being able to hold it's max capacity charge.
Here's what I do:
1) Upon unboxing, I completely drain the battery by using the tablet. This is the best time for you to set it up, re-download the apps (restore from Titanium Backup if you've got root), play with it a little bit, etc.
2) Charge it overnight or around 8-10 hours. Even if it says full, leave it plugged.
3) Completely drain the battery again just like in step 1.
4) Repeat steps 2 and 3 again (2nd cycle).
5) Repeat steps 2 and 3 once more (3rd cycle --the last one).
You're done! Now you can charge your Prime whether it's still 90% or 5%. At this point, try not to forget your Prime plugged in after it says full. Once it says full, unplug it. You can always clear battery stats using recovery (once/if you've rooted) or use those battery apps that can calibrate your battery. Also a note to those who will use custom roms and/or kernels, you might have to do 2 cycles of full charge-discharge, preferably after wiping battery stats, so that your battery can readjust to your new rom/kernel combination.

Your battery can only reach it's full capacity (read: x hours of use for y number of years) if you break it in properly and treat it right. It's not true for all types of batteries but I think it applies to Lithium Ions (Li-Ions), Lithium Polymers (Li-Po) as well as NiCads(?) and maybe other older batteries. You can read about it everywhere if you Google.

My English manual only says to do the 8 hour charge when new and any time after the battery has been fully discharged... which isn't the same as always.

That's interesting. Mine just says when the battery is "leer" (empty) it has to be recharged 8 hours. Looks like the true meaning has been lost in translation.

[Q][Battery] Charging

How long does it taken for a full charge. I'm thinking it could be pretty fast like maybe an hour or less.... Does anyone know?
I remember reading somewhere that its a couple of hours for a full charge. I can't remember where I read it tho so might be wrong.
Hard to say some mentioned it was at least a half charge in about 20 minutes. Guess it depends if the watch is set to always on with brightness at full.
I've read somewehere (sorry, don't recall where anymore) the official specs said it should fully charge in 2 hours.
Didn't test this though since I charge it at night and only charged it once (obviously, just received my new toy yesterday )
Full charge from 0% to 100% takes less 2 hours or less. I don't know the exact rate, never checked ^^ I am going to do a check right now though, I'll post it as soon as I have the results.
Edit:
I just let it charge 20% battery and calculated it. My watch would take exactly 120 minutes = 2 hours for a full charge as it takes 24 Minutes to charge 20%. That would mean it charges 0.83% per minute So it exactly matches the time LG said it would take for it to charge.
