when you rooted, which form of debloating did you choose? - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

When you are able to access the root, it asks you a bunch of questions. (someone please post the screenshot, I cant find it.) It asks to what extent of debloating do you want. Debloat a little, debloat everything but keep nook features, debloat all nook to make it 100% android tablet.
What did everyone pick? any problems with the 100% android tablet?

Since our Nook is technically my wife's and she likes the Nook stock setup, I would choose no debloating, then use Ti Backup to remove only what I don't want.
If it were mine, I would do a full debloat and have an Android tab...

I chose the debloat that took out the second most information. First root ever for me, went fairly well. In hindsight, I wish I chose the "debloat-to-the-max" option.
Also I need to do more research, but I don't want my NT to run a launcher...I want a true, complete Honeycomb (ICS when available) tablet.

Yes, I would like to see some comments on that too.
For example, the Nook comes with an installed app for Pandora. Works fine. Now I know that I can install an "ad free" version but the ads are tiny and since I'm only listening it doesn't matter.
Someone please correct me if I I am missing the point.
I am rooted and have installed a bbunch of apps including alternate readers but I have not uninstalled anything.

I chose the full debloat the first time, but decided that it was potentially too much, and chose to not debloat at all the second time.
After a few hours of bricking, bootlooping and rerooting, I've eventually settled on the "standard" debloat, a.k.a. option 1, where it takes out the trivial stuff. I think I would be happier with all the rest of the B&N apps gone (it's not like I have money to go and buy anything on them), but that's easy enough to fix with root.

I chose to not debloat as those BN apps not really bother me.

I chose the full debloating option. Everything works fine for me as I don't use any B&N content.

When you say Nook's stock setup do you mean the stock OS "launcher" Are you able to see the Android Market and android apps in the stock Nook Tablet OS app view?
I ask b/c my first go at I installed the honeycomb launcher and my girl didn't like this. She wanted the Nook to look the same but just have the android market app/icon alongside the nook app store icon. And any apps she downloads from the Android Market will show up in the stock nook app view. Is this how your setup works?

I don't debloat since I use mine as a book reader. For me it is too small for browsing and video, I use my transformer for those tasks.

I replied to your PM, but in short, no, side loaded Apps and Apps DLed from Android Market and Amazon App Market do not show up in the Nook "Library" so the can not be added the stock Nook home pages. I have some ideas to try, but it might be a few more days before my wife lets me experiment again!

I originally rooted about 3 weeks ago before debloating. Last night I re-rooted and choose the "standard" debloat, a.k.a. option 1, as that still gives me access to the B&N store as I do like to read and occasionally buy a book from there when I can't check it out from the library using Overdrive.

I rooted, minimal debloat (buhbye netflix / pandora, kept the reader stuff. I love this tablet more than any gadget I own.
CAPSLOCK IS HOW I FEEL INSIDE

I used Media de-bloat (Pandora, Netflix) but those apps are still installed on my NT

I tried all of the methods and ended up with max debloat.

I didn't debloat, but use Indirect's post on debloater, and manually uninstall each on titanium backup. You can probably uninstall a few more if you like, ie google talk, cartalk, and some various services that you don't think you need. I do notice that once you debloat, your owner/account name will show "Unavailable", fyi.

I chose option 2. Press enter to continue. Any other to abort. Gotta love the hackers.

No de-bloat. Just rooted and blocked with gapps and every app from my phone that made sense. Used the backup on phone and restore on nook with Titanium.

No de-bloat, as I want the standard Nook setup with the freedom to download what I want. I used the Nook Color App Manager and now have all my 3rd party apps on my Nook home screen. I'm thinking of scraping the Homecatcher program, since I can easily launch the Go Launcher EX from my homescreen.

[Q] Can't access B&N shop since Root and OTA block

Ok, Thanks for everyone and their hard work on making this machine do more and be something worth buying.
Right after I rooted and blocked OTA- going 999, I lost the ability to reach B&N. I can see the books and apps I have on the B&N library etc, but cannot reach their server any longer- just getting error messages. I have looked at all the postings here and other websites. It appears my only hope is to wipe/deregister and start all over again. I have thought about how much I care to reach B&N again, and I guess I like having the option open. There are some ebooks they have that amazon etc does not. I could side load but the storage issue comes back into play with the inability to tap into B&N content storage (I am aware this is being worked on by others here).
So does anyone know of away to get this back without starting all over again.
Thanks
weird error on your part, i have a rooted, with a f rozen "version unavailable" ota and i can get my books fine. of course i buy ALL my books via my computer first and then just download them to the nook/tablet. i have both the nook and the nook tablet
Alright i had the same issue and i got it to work just fine on my Nook so just follow my instructions, though they may be time consuming.
First step, download Titanium Backup from the android market place, go to settings and batch. Then batch backup all apps and system data to SD Card.
Next save back up your launcher settings (i only use GO launcher so i only know how to do it that, which is by going menu button on go launcher screen, preferences backup and restore, then obviously backup) so you don't lose them.
Next step, download the unrooter onto you Nook from here (all credit goes to Indirect for that) then run it.
It will wipe all system data and unroot the Nook. However everything on the SD card will stay, and all purchase from B&N are backed up in the cloud on B&N servers.
Now re-root using the updated rooter by Indirect after you go through the basic setup and registration of your Nook Tab (by this i mean the first few screens where you agree to B&N terms of use and sign into your B&N account), now before you Root ensure you can access B&N servers via the shop menu(otherwise use built in factory erase under settings, device info, erase and repeat the registration though this shouldn't happen at all), then go ahead and use the root here to re-root everything.
Now a word of warning, for whatever reason when you use Indirects newest rooter and you select the launcher to install via the rooting script it will disable the use of the nook button on the home screen. So what i did was installed the honeycomb launcher, then finished rooting (also don't do any of the debloating, i did the first time and it wouldn't let me get the the store, but may of been a fluke, but to be safe don't debloat) then went to the market place to download go launcher ex, made it my default home screen, uninstalled honeycomb.
Now check the B&N shop menu, and it should be working with the root and OTA's blocked. Now to recover all your apps and data, download Titanium backup from market, go batch and restore apps and system data. Do the same for you launchers settings too.
I typed this quickly just to get the basis out to you fast so it may be confusing, if you got questions just ask and i will answer as soon as i see them. Hope this helps you.

Great suggestion! I downloaded a freebie BN book via the Nook app on my pc then transferred it onto the Nook through usb cable. Beautiful alternative.
I have tried the Nook for PC connection and the book cover did not transfer. I have tried the dropbox method another user suggested and it did not fix shop for me like it did for them. I am hesitant to unroot/erase blah blah reroot etc because everything went so smoothly the first time and with the OTA's running, I could get caught with 1.4.1 or have another problem that I did not have before. I was hoping for a solid solution. This issue appears to rear up for many people with no clear reason as to why (root or nonroot). I did not choose to debloat before so I am not thinking that is a link to my problem as well. I have noticed that under accounts and sync settings that "device" and "user" are off with no way to turn on. I am not sure if this is because of the OTA blocks.
Thanks for the responses. Hopefully, I can figure out something without the long process.
The way i described it is the exact way i did it on my Nook, it took me about a hour to do it, but that was due to me doing it for the first time. If you follow the instructions i told you, you should get done within 15 minutes and be in the exact shape you are in right now with no data loss. Though i can understand you apprehension to doing it, as i was too but i figured i might as well.
So this post is merely a vote of confidence saying you should try it if you find nothing else, worse case scenario your out 30 minutes and your exactly where you are now.
Thanks,
I will probably end up using your instructions. Just waiting for the odd chance of a miracle.
Pain in the ass but it does work. Took me half hour to do cause I had to reset widgets they didnt backup, but that was expected
If you froze the device manager that can keep the nook store from working. Unfreeze it to access the store the freeze it again once you are done.

[Q] Nook for Android app does nothing

I have a NT rooted and setup to disable automatic downloads from BN following directions on this forum. Everythings been working pretty good but I would still like to purchase things from BN occasionally.
I then went out to the Android marketplace and downloaded Nook for Android, installed it and I can see it in my list of apps.
When I click on the icon for it though, all it does it take me back to the main page of my launcher.
Has anyone else had these issues?
Sounds like a bad install to me. I am rooted with zergy and have minor debloat, opting to keep all of the B&N stuff as I still buy books often. Which root method did you use? I also have the nook app on my phone with a few books in my dropbox. It works fine on that as well. Perhaps try clearing cache and data from the app and try signing in again?
I know there have been other threads on this, and I don't recall anyone getting it to work. I believe B&N has done something either to the app or to Android to prevent it from running.

I had the same outcome after rooting. I suspect and accepted that it was most likely due to opting for a full B&N debloat.
Right, I did do a full debloat also.
If BN would let me just get the ebook, even to my computer, I suppose maybe I could transfer it over to the nook that way but I haven't tried it.
Thanks!

Calibre is a resource to assist in that. I find it a great library manager and it will act as a WiFi server to your Nook through the Calibre Library app
I'm unclear whether this post is about the nook software already baked into the device, or the "Nook for Android by B&N" available to download on the Market.
When you say "Nook for Android" I assume you mean the latter.
It's strange that the app will not even launch. I'm not sure how it differs from any other android app. The app works fine on my Droid and Droid charge, but won't download certain magazines saying they're unavailable on the app, when they clearly work just fine on the software baked into the Nook Tablet.
Perhaps after someone gets Cyanogenmod stable on the device we will see whether or not there was something baked in that specifically blocked the "Nook for Android" app in the Market.
I was referring to the B&N Nook app from Android market. MOst of the other B&N preloaded apps also stopped working after debloat too
As ckevinwelch mentioned there have been numerous posts about this - including one by me. What I did instead was find the reader.apk, shop.apk and library.apk apps in an old back-up of Ti-Backup I had and installed those after doing a full debloat using indirect's root. Have had no problems since then.... (I've re-rooted a couple of times to take advantage of updates, etc).
edit... I mispoke, it appears that after I did the freeze OTA block (9.9.9) recently, it now shows as unavailable under owner/account in settings, I don't have access to the B&N shop, but my old books are still on my NT and I can read them. It did work when I was listed under owner/account.
Sorry to get your hopes up.

If you did the debloat PRIOR to installing and backing up using TI-backup, is there some other place to find and reinstall these apps?
You can get them from the acclaim update zip file (for the magic restore card).
So did you decide not to sell yours?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
TX Kevin, and no, didn't change my mind but the buyer flaked on me. So, still trying to make it worthwhile keeping if it ends up that way.
Does acclaim file require me to reroot? hate the idea of that...
Don't restore from the zip, just pull them out, move them to system/app and install.

of course none of these will actually do much until I reregister the device under my B&N account, correct? Presently, they run but don't access anything.
Speaking of...is there a way to reregister without rerooting?

I did not do a full debloat and only removed games but I have the same problem and cannot use some of the originally installed B&N apps. I think it is something I have to accept since I rooted the device. I did not install the Nook for Android app.
OK - Did a test last night w/ the following results:
After backing up all my apps and go launcher settings, and using Indirect's unroot app and Indirect's root method I rooted once each using option 5 debloat and option 1 debloat. Both times I registered my NT when the initial welcome screens started.
- With option 5 debloat and OTA block I did not have access to the B&N Shop/Library and couldn't purchase new books. I could re-install the library & reader apps from my back-up and my old stuff was there but no access to buy/download new stuff. Device Info/About Your Nook showed Unavailable for Owner/Account.
- With option 1 debloat and OTA block I do have access to the B&N Shop/Library and was able to purchase and download a new book. Device Info/About Your Nook showed my name and e-mail for Owner/Account.
I find it takes about 45 - 60 min. to completely unroot, reroot and reinstall my apps from back-up (after installing Ti-Backup from the market). Since your computer has already been set-up w/ the drivers to root when you did your intitial root - just start the reroot process w/ the NookandZergy.bat that you have in your c:\ntroot folder.

[Q] What path should I take if I only want Kindle and Comixology functionality?

I just purchased a Nook Tablet. Moved over from the Kindle Fire because I didn't like how thick the screen was and thus how glossy / reflective it is. I actually don't mind the Nook interface. Literally all I want to do is run the Kindle App for Android along with Comixology. I have purchased significant content on both and I don't want to lose access to it. Otherwise I like the Nook and would be content to just use the stock OS. Is this possible? Or do I have to dual boot?
It appears that I can simply prevent OTA updates and stay on 1.4.0. Is this still true?

Yes, after you root your device then apply the OTA prevention to keep B&N from updating.
pretty much follow the rooting method, block ota updates and you should be set

Sweet. I was prepared to have to run CM9, etc., but hoping to stick with the main OS for now.
So I got this working for the most part. Is there any way to get these apps to appear under the Nook UI? Right now I'm booting into the AWS Home and that's where Kindle is located, etc.
Look for an application named "App Manager". It will make shortcuts for whatever app you like on the Nook home screen. It should be easy enough to track down in the Nook Tablet and/or the Nook Color forums.
EDIT: There's a link to the APK for App Manager in post number 5: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1353040
I use homecatcher & go launcher my my homepage, i NEVER use the nook default launcher, i just add shortcuts to the nook apps on my main page, and i one "page" devoted to games...
btw rooted, also install the amazon app store,
better selection AND better prices than the stock b&n store plus they give a paid app away for free a day-i have installed atleast 50 apps this way.
and if you are a prime member, install the amazon video player, though you have to temporarily unroot the tablet (voodoo rootkeeper) to use.
Just bought an 8gb NT with 1.42 preloaded and I just want to add the kindle app to it. Do I do everything you do for a 16gb NT?

Uninstall TF201 ASUS bloat ware?

Just rooted my device.
Was wondering how safe is it to delete apps that I do not use, bloatware from ASUS.
Can I (uninstall) delete these safely (using Titanium backup):
1. Amazon Kindle
2. App Backup
3. App Locker
4. File Manager
5. Glowball
6. My Cloud
7. My Library
8. My Net
9. Polaris Office
10. Net Reader
11. SuperNote
12. Webstorage
Thanks for reading
Yes its safe to delete those apps but I would make sure you have recovery and back up your full stock rom first in fact most of the custom roms have all those apps removed.

I would strongly consider keeping some of those apps.
For instance Polaris Office is a really good office suite for Android. My Cloud gives you a full copy of Splashtop Remote Desktop which is one of the easiest remote desktop apps currently available on Android. Both of these are very useful apps which might come in handy someday. Unless you are running out of space on your Prime I would leave them alone.
What is your point ?
Those apps are not 'system' apps in the real sense (they are system only because they are part of the ROM and installed in /system/app) you can remove them like you would remove any user app.
Keep the backup files in Titanium, as some of those apps can't be found easily elsewhere.
Many android users would like to have Polaris I agree. Same for My Cloud.
I do have Office Suit Pro already.... that's why I am thinking off getting rid of Polaris..

When you decide to unlock and install a custom Rom, you're really going to like wookies rom with aroma installer which let's you install without these apps.

Or if you are rooted (which I assume he is since we are having this conversation) just get titanium backup and freeze the apps you don't want. No that does not save space on the device, but deleting them to save space is a waste of time. With all of the "bloat ware" in place, my 32GB prime still has over 25 GB free even after installing all the other apps I use including Chrome and it's cache. So space is not really an issue. Freezing them will keep them from actually running which is my real goal.
Also, if you do start tinkering with system apps, the ability to freeze rather than delete is critical. I found this out while playing around with my droid 3. I figured since i was using google voice for my voice mail, I did not need the built in voicemail - only to discover that freezing it killed the dialer too. Likewise when I froze the built in music player, it caused the third party music player app I use to quit working - I have no clue why, but is sure was nice to be able to go back in and just unfreeze as needed.
You h:e a point about freezing. I noticed if you got rid of built in Gallery app... ie delete it... I am unable to apply any images as wallpapers...

Hi,
You might consider using ROM CLEANER
A great program that will clear all the [email protected] off your system in one go.
i wrote an article about how to get your TF201 as clost to pure as possible
Sorry if this is considered self promotion but it should be helpful heres the link http://www.mikeyb2001.com/2013/07/how-to-get-near-perfect-nexus.html

[Q] Nook Tablet 8GB kid friendly options

I am shortly going to have a spare nook 8gb tablet lying around. It is already rooted and has cryogen 11 currently installed on it. I would like to re-purpose it for my son who is almost 6 into a learning tablet like a Nabi. Is there a ROM that I could flash to make it like I want or an app that i can install to severely lock down the device except for pre-approved apps. Thanks in advance.
With CM11 you should be able to setup a different user profile/login for your son and select which app is accessible to the secondary profile.
I used titanium backup and froze/deleted all the apps that I didn't my kids to use. Then, I use apex launcher and hid titanium/playstore. Whenever I need any of those hidden apps, I just have to reset defualt launcher and everything (not frozen) reappers.
