[Q] Moving files with Nook Tablet - Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

I'm on the fence about this thing.
I'm seeing that you can install 3rd party apps, so I'm wondering if I just install something like Root Explorer or Astro, if I can download my books from my Dropbox Cloud, and move then to the folder in which they would show up in the actual library and not in the "My Files" section.
Because it now supports CBZ files I don't have a need for the apps I currently use. All I need is to move my ePubs to the right folder and I'll be good to go and will buy one.

I am wondering something similar, but I want Market and sideloaded apps to show up under the "Library" so they can be accessed via the stock interface.

es file explorer is what most of us have been using to do exactly this. I demo it on my video, especially one about reverting back to 1.4.0

I'll check out your youtube channel.
If I can move files, then I'll be good to go and will grab this unit up once I sell my Nook Color.

What format are your books? How are you trying to move them? via usb? dropbox?
Do you have an SD card installed? Without one, only 1GB is seen on your internal memory if you connect your noob to your pc with the usb cord (but then you can move it to anywhere else).
Install a file explorer program (file expert is a good free one, root explorer is too but it has the possibility of having you misclick and mess up permissions on system folders).
Books/anything else moved to your NT's internal memory via usb -> shows up in /media. Books that you want your nook's native book applications to see -> move them to /data/books. Books that you have on your sdcard -> will not be seen by your nook's ebook reader program but you can make any folder anywhere and put books in it.
I recommend using an sdcard and downloading a program called Coolreader (android market); it's the best ebook reader I've found on this platform. It has a ton of settings and lets you configure it entirely (font, spacing, layout, behavior, etc etc). It reads from .zip archives and supports quite a few formats. It won't see anything with DRM protection on it that hasn't been removed, nor will it see .lit or amazon's proprietary formats. Anything with DRM on it that you bought from a certain market (Kindle, Adobe DRM ebook stores, etc) will only be read in associated programs (until you remove the drm) :/ Calibre is a great program (on the pc-side) to convert between book formats and manage your library, as a side note (not related to drm removal).
if I kept them on on my SD card how would I get them to show up using the stock ebook reader? Also....what format can I use? I have them in .mobi and .opf
Since I am rooted I can access the other 15GB ... I tried using es filer explorer (enabling root) and trying to move them to the books folder but I still cant get them to show up using the google books...kindle app and the stock app on the tablet

For books on your SD card go to your Library application -> my files -> press memory card, and your books should be there (at least the ones in a format it sees/reads).
Stuff in /data/books will show up automatically on your shelves, I think. Stuff in /media books will need to be imported the same way as above: library -> my files -> books (just not clicking on memory card button).
The Nook's eReader will see: EPUB, PDF, DOC, TXT, DOCM, DOCX. Epub is a great thing to convert all your books to as it's widely supported and is the public domain standard (by the way). Other reader apps will see more formats. I think .opf is epub though no? Or rather it's .epub with extra metadata, so that should be seen right off the bat. If not, do try Calibre out. One click conversions to any formats, and previews of how it looks on that format.
I am so sorry to keep asking about this...I have tried putting them in the data/books but nothing showed up in my library. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Sorry if I keep asking stupid questions...just really want this to show up on my "shelf"
Try this:
Open library -> my stuff (upper right) -> find book (sd card) -> select book/long press book -> select add to shelf from pop out menu. It will ask you to make a shelf; you can edit and add shelves via the menu that pops up (create new shelf/add to favorites).
Does that work?
Putting them in /data/books adds it to the reader+reader's directory. I could have sworn there was a way to mass-autoadd things to the shelves (checking now).
edit: Ok, I can't get it to work except through actually adding it with the Library app Rebooting the device puts the books from my files -> add to shelves in the "book" tab however, but they do not automatically appear there if you close/restart the library app without rebooting the nook. Odd behavior. If you have a lot of books the library seemed very finger intensive.
I can't figure out how to mass-move anything inside the Library app either, and I'm not sure whether it has this capability either. Yeah, I quickly moved away to using a file explorer app + another reader, as you can see
Hi ...
Nook is unable to see/read .mobi and .opf. You must convert them to epub, using a free program called Calibre.
Or they are locked by the use of a DRM... again Calibre can help you.
Try to find an ebook is an "epub," reread slowly, Zmobie's excellent posts, then try again...
ok....so I can get them to show in "my shelf" if and only if keep it on my SD card. My goal is to keep my books on my nt and music movies and pics on my SD card because it is only an 8GB.
I have a John Grisham collection that I have in a folder labled "john grisham" Should I not put it in a folder and just put it in the data/books folder
Ok, there are a bunch of book directories on the internal memory: media/My Files/Books seems to be the only one that automatically shows up in the Library books section but ONLY if you reboot. Copy/move the books you want on the internal memory there, to have them show up in Library.
If you (or when I did anyway) add a book through the Library application it will add it to the shelves, if you pull it from an sd card, or the 1gb media/My Files/Books storage folder. I went and pasted a bunch of books to test this and the Library app only sees things that is labeled as user storage (which I guess makes sense).
The way to mass-add books to the Library, without one by one dragging and adding through the Library app itself, is to move the files you want to automatically load up in Library (under the "books tab" - won't be added to a shelf automatically) is to copy all of them into media/My Files/Books, and restart the nook. The restart is needed as there doesn't seem to be a way to force it to scan for new books without a restart :/.
So:
It should *definitely* see all your books if you move them to media/my files/books, under the "books" tab, NOT under "my stuff" tab, if you copy and reboot the nook. You can then add them to shelves from the main "books" tab (which is what Library starts up in).
I don't know whether it scans inside folders - it *should* so you should try moving your John Grisham folder to media/My Files/books and see.
(I wonder what the three other /books locations are for :/. I don't seem to force Library to automatically recognize stuff in them. The reader does recognize anything in those directories, but then it's just a folder listing anyway).
edit: Ok it works inside folders for me. Have fun!
Thank you so much! Now if can figure out how to make folders on my desktop I will be good to go.....thank you so much
Calibre also works great for the Mac

On the Nook default launcher you can't, I think*? It's a reason I use another launcher (go/adw) and just create links to the Nook applications I use. You can make folders by default in either of the two above launchers.
*If anyone has managed this, do tell.
not to get off topic but when I try to add a folder...long press on the screen and select folder and nothing happens

In Go launcher? HMMM. *tries*
edit: Oh, that's funny. You're right! I never actually make folders that way, because I have a few folders I got from accidentally dragging an icon onto another icons. They get grouped into a folder automatically I assumed the normal way worked, but if not, try that.
It doesn't work in any of the launchers. It must be disabled on the nook entirely in that case. Weird!
I wasn't able to drop appear together with ads to make a folder so I switched to go launcher and I like it so much better. It it what I use on my roped droid x2. I don't know if it was my hacked downloaded version of adw that caused this but for some reason I could not put anything on the top 1 inch or so of the screen. But I have had no issues with GO.
Sorry to keep asking newborn queriins. This is my first tablet. I have noticed that even though it is rooted and has an android os on it, there are still a lot of things that canny be done. I have not been able to download a facebook apk I have also had issues with the xda app. When I log in the app force closes. Not a big deal...I have then been going to the website. With that in mind....is there a way to put web page short cuts on the droidtop......
Again...sorry for the newborn questions and thank you again for your help

Yep, there are a lot of things disabled on the NT and won't work until apps get updated or mods are released for the tablet. It's a new (and restricted) device, so this is normal really; various things won't work off the bat. I think there is a Facebook app thread in these forums (or the dev forum) that gets that app to work somehow. I don't use it so I don't know specifics.
I heard that ADW launchers recent update changed/broke some things, so that might be why it isn't working perfectly. I use go launcher myself and ADW only for emergencies currently, yeah. Anyway, no worries on asking newbie questions - means the device is getting more users and exposure! Have fun with it.

Any way to add ebooks to GoLauncher home screens?

Got my nootlet sideloading and rooted, rocking the GoLauncher, replaced b&n home screen, and i'm happy except for a couple things: google market only wants to crash, but more importantly I miss being able to drag books onto the home screen. I tried anycut but didn't see a way to add a shortcut to a file.
Am i not using it right or is this not (yet) doable?
via noot tablet &xda premium
Download ES File Explorer from the market.
Navigate to any folder or file with it, and long press. Choose Shortcut. It will create a file or folder shortcut on the homescreen.
Since you're using GoLauncher, you can also longpress the shortcut, choose 'replace' and select any icon you want from installed themes or icon packs, or select 'custom icon' and create one (say, of a book cover) from a .jpg file.
You are my hero! Thanks.

Also, google market crashing is a permissions issue - it should be in system/apps, with all other programs set as rw-r--r-- and Vending.apk specifically showing rw-rw-rw- (you can check this with root explorer) - at least it is for me, and rw-r--r-- promptly crashes it. data/app should also have a com.android.vending.apk with permissions rw-r--r--. If not, reinstall, or factory reset + reroot (don't need to do the drivers part again). You *will* miss a functional android market. It's more useful than you think.
I un-rooted then re-rooted the nook. That seems to have solved all the issues I was having. So zmobile, your advice made perfect sense, thanks.

Great! Glad it works
Hi there,

Go Launcher and ES Explorer on
tried to find my ebooks searching for .epub or .pdf but cannot find nothing.
i'm uploading my books from pc with calibre.
everytime i try to enter in a path (internal memory, sd card...) a message pop up similar to (sorry i do not have my nook here now) "no folders are found, do you want to create one?"
thanks
The books go in /media/my files/books
Path on sd card is /my files/books
They will all show up in the library then.

Why can't I see all my folders when I connect to my PC?

So I have a motorola photon and when I connect to my PC the full internals are viewable for me.
With my new prime all I see are transfer folders and limited number of internal folders. I cannot see the storage partition of the prime like I can on my Photon. Is there something wrong with my tablet? Do I need a special app? What am I missing here?
The Prime does not mount the SD card as a drive the way you are used to on your Photon. The Prime uses MTP, same as the new digital cameras. This allows you access to your media folders, but not system folders. A quick work-around is to copy the files you want to one of the media folders, then use a file browsing app like Root Explorer to move it from the media folder to your desired location on the internal memory.

Yea I found the thread on ES File Explorer once I figured out the proper terms to narrow down my search to my problem and used that to transfer over my kindle books and the like.
Why can't I hold all these folders?
Sent from my tablet thing with XDA Premium.
I've resorted to using FTP (DroidFTP Pro) in order to get the files where I want them.. MTP is so annoying.

Rqst reader and foxxit

I just download cypher rom, but I really miss reader and pdf apps can someone compile an apk, thanks...
Load up whatever ROM had those items on it, download and install Astro file viewer (free app).
Create a backup (application backup)of the apps you want to keep, and then transfer them to your SD card.
Install on Cypher rom.
I just got reader working on my cypher rom flashed evo view.
I've attached the reader apk that I took from A Clever Name's ROM.
Simply add this to your system/app folder and restart the tablet, the reader should pop up in your applications tab.
I tried to look for the apk for the pdf reader, but since I primarily use ezpdf I couldn't find it and wasn't too worried about it.
If you can get me the name of the apk for the pdf reader I can see if it was in his ROM (or you can do that yourself)
Can I add my own books to that Reader and if so in what format. I have a couple of books here in two different formats.
This is the default reader app that comes from the stock HTC. So you use it exactly like that one and it supports the scribe fuctions and so forth.
Thank you for your prompt response

I have some epubs in a folder in my sd card, reader search and add all the compatible files. You can convert books to epub using a free app calibre
Hey guys thanks for the solution for recap, the only missing step was how to access system/app folder, just download root explorer from market (maybe anyone can suggest a free app) and paste the apk in system/app folder restart the device and you are ready to go.
Installing it was perfect. As long as your rooted, lol. To get the books to show up on your phone. A restart is required. I placed the books on my SD Card and left it there the whole day and the Reader did not pick up on them. But when I did a restart a few minutes ago an alert popped up telling me that it's importing my books and there they were on the Reader. Thanks again for the app; now to sit back with a cup of tea and enjoy reading =D

[Q] How to hide images from gallery

Hello
I currently have a HTC EVO 3D, and on that phone I am able to create a folder named ".story" in my file manager app, and all the pictures i put in there will not be shown in the gallery app. Works very nicely and exactly how i want it to.
Now onto my issue.
I tried to do the same on my Prime, creating the folder, putting the exact same images in that folder (all from dropbox, syncing it to my comp, phone and tablet).
But the images still show up in the gallery app.
I also tried to put a file named ".nomedia" in the folder where i keep all my pictures, still didn't work.
I tried rebooting several times to see if i had to force a media rescan, but it seems like it didn't work.
I'm running .21 update, stock, with root.
Am i missing something, or doesn't this work on the prime? If so, any other way to do so? (I don't want to use a "vault" app to hide pictures and such)
- Moon
I had the same problem a few weeks ago. Try the app Hide it Pro. It's free on the Play Store and does pretty much what your asking for. It also works with videos, Docs and apps.
Sorry can't post links yet!
Edit: oops sorry, I didn't read the full post
it is annoying
You are not alone, naming the folder with a initial . and creating a .nomedia file does not work for me either, and I find it annoying. Clearing Gallery cache did not help either.
Works just fine, ".foldername" with a .nomedia file in it. Does for me at least, hides it from gallery and from the built in file manager. ES file explorer picks it up but it's at that point you're not hiding anything
EDIT: Try making a file on your computer, right click and New>File, name it .nomedia, then DropBox (that's a sign up link, you'd help me out as well as yourself by using it) it. Download it and copy/pasta to the folder. That's how I did it, because a guide I read said it worked better if from the PC instead of through Android.
If you're trying to hide a whole trove of things, make a folder and name it ".foldername" and then put your hidden folder in there and name it ".foldername2", then drop a .nomedia into .foldername and .foldername2 as well, doubling up on that.
I wouldn't recommend that with app picture caches though
If you are up for using a different Gallery app, you can whitelist and blacklist folders to be displayed in QuickPic

I did as you suggested, and it friggin worked! AWESOME!, mucho love to you
Now my files on my tablet is in a folder named ".story", inside that is a folder named "story" with a ".nomedia" file in it, and inside the "story" folder are all my pictures. (I made the ".nomedia" file on Windows, dropboxed it over to my Android Tablet (I made a new .txt document, removed the .txt and just named it ".nomedia" if anyone is wondering)).
After you try it, be sure to reboot your tablet, as that forces a media rescan
